On November 18th, 2012, 13-year-old Dylan Redwine traveled to Durango, Colorado for a court ordered visit with his father. After getting off of the plane, Dylan’s father Mark told the young teenager he had to run errands early the next morning. This prompted Dylan to make plans to meet with a friend early in the morning before his dad left the house. When Mark awoke the next morning, Dylan was still asleep on the couch, but when he returned home, his son was nowhere to be found. All calls and texts to his son went unanswered, and his friends stated they hadn’t seen or heard from Dylan. As the hours passed, Mark became increasingly concerned as he lived in a rugged, mountainous area. The days quickly turned into weeks and eventually months, until Dylan’s remains were recovered on a rural mountain road just 8 miles from his father’s home. After his death was ruled a homicide, investigators were made aware that the young teenager had discovered and confronted his father about some compromising information his brother had found on the computer the year prior. On October 20, 2007, just outside of Toronto’s city limits, 26 year old Brett Ryan would rob his first bank. Disguised in hospital bandages, he handed the teller a note that read “Stay calm. I have a gun in the sling,” referencing the fake arm cast he wore, fastened from a strap around his neck. This is the story of a seemingly average college student that had every opportunity to reach true success in life, but was only interested in taking shortcuts in order to get there. Brett Ryan was unwilling to accept a life of mediocrity and was willing to do anything it took to portray a lap of luxury that he never truly earned... but how long can one person keep up with living a lie? Most of us trust that our legal system will deliver the right judgments and hold those who commit heinous crimes accountable. That trust extends to the support we expect to follow — the assumption that resources will be available after an unexpected tragedy. But the unfortunate truth is that not everyone is afforded these privileges, making the path to recovery and closure all the more complicated for survivors of violent crime who are left to pick up the pieces on their own. For the family of 70-year-old David Flaget, that journey was filled with obstacles. On Saturday, February 23rd - 2019, Jassy Correia was out celebrating her upcoming birthday at the popular Venu nightclub in Boston, MA. The following Wednesday, an alert went out that she was now officially considered a “missing person.” Family and friends hadn’t heard from her in days, and whilst Boston Police promptly posted the club’s surveillance video the night Jassy disappeared, they noticed that she was not alone. A suicide is frantically called into 911 from a rural trailer in Flintstone, Georgia in October of 2016. 27-year old Donald “DJ” Fickey, Jr. is dead, the result of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. But as DJ’s immediate family begins piecing together the last moments of his life - they quickly realize his death was no suicide. A Dallas Police Officer shoots and kills an intruder in her apartment after returning home from a 14-hour shift. The nearly unidentifiable remains of an 18-year old woman are found burning behind a middle school in Mayfield, KY in 2000. The lead investigator fumbles the crime scene, ignoring vital clues and eventually focusing exclusively on one primary suspect.
