While 2022 turned out to be a nervous year, 2023 will be troubling for investors. Since many companies the high yield universe are privately held, there is not always a  strong incentive for extensive ESG reporting. ESG investing in high yield bonds still requires something extra from an investor, such as engagement and thorough due diligence. Now that high yield can rightfully be called high yield again and volatility is high, the opportunities for investors are increasing in this part of the fixed income market. This is what Marije Groen talks about with portfolio specialist Loïc Depierreux of PGIM Fixed Income.

Climate change is causing unprecedented damage if we fail to achieve a net-zero economy by 2050. Because of their size, bond markets have enormous potential to contribute to that goal.  'It's still a sleeping giant. Zubairi has surprised some by bringing a sceptical eye to claims made for the latest and greatest technology. Speaking at a recent financial technology conference – the Finverse Forum that focussed on cutting edge issues such as Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) and the multiverse – he allowed as to how “we’re being sold on innovation by a bunch of firms that have a lot of money to spend on marketing.”

Luxembourg’s financial centre has shown itself willing to try anything to maintain its market leading position. One of the key ways it does this is by taking advantage of any new technology that might make a difference to the bottom line – cutting costs, expanding the client base, meeting client needs or developing new products and being open to further innovation. 

One of the key levers to advance this cause is the organisation Zubairi represents, best known as the LHoFT, which was set up in 2016 as a public-private sector initiative to help financial firms adopt and push further with digitalisation.

As a Princeton University psychologist, Daniel Kahneman won the 2002 Nobel Prize for Economic Sciences for his groundbreaking work that applied psychological insights to economic theory. He taught the world that human judgement and decision-making under uncertainty are prone to inaccuracies. His theory holds valuable lessons also for investors.

De bekende 60/40 portefeuilles zijn een belangrijk thema in asset allocatie. Chief Strategy Officer van BNP Paribas Fortis Philippe Gijsels stelt dat we in een andere wereld terecht zijn gekomen. ‘Het hart van onze strategie blijft dat je in reële activa moet blijven zitten. Je kan ook alternatieve activaklassen opnemen. Denk aan wijnen en whisky, die rendementen zoals 10 tot 20 procent geven. De voorziening van grondstoffen wordt steeds belangrijker.'
