322 Nettie Wiebe - We have become monocultural in our fields and minds06 Sep 202400:52:23

A conversation with Nettie Wiebe, organic farmer and long-time small farm activist in Canada and globally, one of the founders of La Via Campesina, part of the IPES food panel, and coauthor of the recent Land Squeeze report. We talk about land purchases and prices. In many places, over 70% of the farmland is controlled by 1% of the farms. This is just one of the many challenges the latest Land Squeeze report of the IPES food panel addresses. We talk about the results of the report and what to do about it, how go get speculative money out of farming and why green grabbing needs to stop.

Land squeeze: one of the biggest issues in regenerative farming is access to land. Why is that? Farmers in the global industrialised north are ageing, and many of them don’t have a next generation taking over the farm; many other people would love to farm and are, in many cases, able, but can never finance the land purchase because land prices and value are completely disconnected. They face competition from ever larger industrial extractive, well financed farms.

321 Eduard Müller - Regenerative education is the answer, whatever the question was03 Sep 202401:28:39

A conversation with Eduard Müller, founder of University for International Cooperation (UCI) and leading Costa Rica Regenerativa, about regenerative education: what does it mean, and why is it so powerful to focus on educating people who want to learn more about regeneration? Eduard makes a very strong case against trying to convince the people in power, in industry, in chemical companies, in fertile companies, in large ultra-processed food companies, at the UN, etc. He has tried and failed, and he truly believes in on education and unlearning. That is why he started his own university 15 years ago. He started with online education in 1998, focusing on scaling regeneration in Costa Rica and showing the numbers and data behind it to reach the tipping point.

312 Maarten van Dam – How to fund the transition of the first pioneers in regenerative agriculture16 Jul 202401:09:16

A conversation with Maarten van Dam, founder of Schevichoven Regenerative farm, about numbers when transitioning from conventional to regenerative agriculture and keeping records on inputs, prices, and machinery. Maarten is keeping a lot of records of their pioneering farm transitioning from a mono dairy farm to a diverse agroforestry system.

Remember the Dutch farming protests? What do we miss when we talk about the transition from conventional to regenerative? We miss numbers numbers numbers. Many of the pioneers- rightfully so- didn’t keep good records, on inputs, prices, machinery and, of course, hours. Nobody tracks hours in agriculture. What does it cost per hectare, and what off-take do you need? With a minimum of 50K euro per hectare in the Netherlands, you can transition in about 7 years to a diverse perennial agroforestry system, only counting wholesale prices, counting all your hours, and paying a fair wage. Of course, at Schevichoven they are only in year 4, so all of that has to be proven. But what does it mean for the rest of the 50.000 farmers in the Netherlands? What are the types of regen systems they can apply? We need about 150 billion to transition them. It sounds like a lot, but is doable.

Fireside Chat with John Kempf & Koen van Seijen @ Groundswell '2409 Jul 202400:59:12

Ever wondered how podcasting can transform the field of regenerative agriculture? This fire side chat with John Kempf and Koen van Seijen, hosts of the most followed and longest existing podcasts in the regenerative agriculture and food space, was recorded live at Groundswell 2024.

This is an intimate conversation where we dive deep in the the long-term dedication needed to engage an audience genuinely, the nerve-wracking journey of publishing the initial episodes and the relentless effort required to build a loyal listener base. We highlight the importance of mentors, the art of storytelling and how digital platforms can amplify critical ideas and drive change.

We uncover how the overuse of nutrients like nitrogen and potassium can actually harm crops, making them more susceptible to diseases and pests, and ultimately reducing yields. We explore the research on plant nutrition, plant health and fertilizer use and questions traditional agronomy practices. John shares about Advancing Eco Agriculture's fundraising experience within the farming community and the strategies for reaching wider audiences, including turning our podcast episodes into books. Plus, a sneak peek into the shared upcoming projects focusing inputs from innovative companies.

We don’t talk about policy a lot on the podcast because it doesn’t seem to be so investable, but it does seem absolutely fundamental because if a subsidy scheme like the Farm Bill or the Common Agriculture Policy in Europe (CAP) or chemical fossil fuel fertiliser subsidies in many places makes the life of regenerative farmers more difficult, it means it is much more difficult to invest in the space and move it forward.

What we learned in 2022 about nutrient density in food, farmers’ philosophy, enabling technologies and satellites and redesigning products 27 Dec 202200:09:14

Wow! What a year it has been. Just when you thought things couldn’t get any crazier we find ourselves in a war in Europe, crazy energy and food prices and extreme high inflation rates in general.

In an ideal world farms applying regenerative practises are more resilient, but as we saw with the story of Josh Heyneke, founder of Parc Carreg, farms can get into trouble very quickly when input prices spike (in this case organic grain from Ukraine to feed the ducks). It seems like Josh and his partner Abigail will make it through the winter and are building hard on their more resilient future, which will include climate neutral eggs!

The most important story

Healthy soil equals healthy food equals healthy people is arguably the most important story we shared in 2022. We kicked off this new Nutrient Density in Food series unpacking this crucial piece of the puzzle (supported by the A Team Foundation who is looking to make investments and donations in the space).

We interviewed Anne Biklé and David R Montgomery who not only co authored the study “Soil health and nutrient density: preliminary comparison of regenerative and conventional farming”, but also wrote the book What your food ate. if you haven’t read it please do it asap and give it to anyone interested in health!

Interviews with Fred Provenza and Zuzanna Zielińska really showed how strong this connection is. We look forward to continue this series in 2023.
REQUEST: If you have people we should interview that are building companies in the food- from healthy soils- as medicine space, please let us know!

Farmers’ Philosophy Series and Video!

There is so much more we can learn from the key decision makers of our time, farmers than soil health and this deserves time and space. Following the legends in the podcasting world, we couldn’t stay behind :) and in November we recorded our first video interview.

Together with regenerative farmer and pioneer Jeroen Klompe we sat down and took time to go deep. We covered a lot of ground while really enjoying the process. Let us know in the comments what you think!

Going deeper

The video episode wasn’t the only place where we went deeper. Non other than Charles Eisenstein joined us for a deep conversation! With

199 Eric Archambeau - Drawing from his Silicon Valley experience and after having put €300M to work in food and ag tech, now is the moment to raise VC funds writing €100M checks20 Dec 202200:56:39

We talk about it at conferences and discuss it over coffee: we should get institutional investors (the pension funds, insurance companies, and very large asset managers) investing in the space. But very few people have actually raised from these players and thought about their role.

Who can write $100M checks to give the scale-ups in the regenerative agriculture and food tech space the time to grow? Why now is the moment for regenerative food and agriculture (as health care costs are getting out of control, institutional players are forced to invest in impact, technology and raw computational power make almost magic possible)?

197 Farmers’ Philosophy - Jeroen Klompe, pioneer of regenerative agriculture09 Dec 202201:13:21

A conversation between Koen van Seijen, host of the Investing in Regenerative Agriculture and Food podcast, and Jeroen Klompe, farmer and owner of Klompe Landbouw.

We can learn so much more from farmers than how to restore soil. Regeneration goes much further and deeper. That’s why this is the first episode of the Farmers’ Philosophy series, where we make time with farmers who are pushing the boundaries of regenerative agriculture, we sit down with them and take time to to explore more than soil health.

The video version of the conversation is on YouTube. Film and edit by Caspar Daniël Diederik of Storytravelers.

What is needed to change one of the largest farming subsidy schemes in the world? What pathways and successful examples do we have of European policy change? This is a much more optimistic and practical interview than you might imagine. It is about how to gather the pioneers of the regenerative and agroecology movement who against all odds and subsidies build very successful food and agriculture companies. How do we empower them to replicate their success and how do we create a strong enough voice in Brussels to change the rules of the game?
