| Do We Need New Laws of Physics to Explain the Origins of Life? Brian Keating & Lee Cronin | 30 Aug 2024 | 02:39:48 | |
Do we need new laws of physics to explain the origins of life?
I had an amazing discussion about this with the one and only Lee Cronin on Theories of Everything with Curt Jaimungal. We talked about life, consciousness, physics, chemistry, assembly theory, the Drake equation, and more!
Lee Cronin is a chemist and the Regius Chair of Chemistry in the School of Chemistry at the University of Glasgow. His research focuses on synthetic life forms, the self-assembly of molecules, and the origin of life. He’s also a leading expert in the field of digital chemistry, pushing the boundaries of chemistry using advanced robotics and AI.
Curt Jaimungal is the host of the popular podcast and YouTube channel "Theories of Everything," known for exploring theoretical physics, consciousness, Ai, and God in a technically rigorous manner.

| Confessions of an Alien Hunter with Seth Shostak (2021) | 27 Aug 2024 | 00:47:28 | |
What is the current state of the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI)? Why do scientists often raise their eyebrows at UFO sightings? And what might the future of SETI look like with ongoing technological advancements?
I had the privilege of diving into these fascinating topics with the professional alien hunter Seth Shostak!
Seth Shostak is an astronomer and author who directs the search for extraterrestrials at the SETI Institute in California—trying to find evidence of intelligent life in space. He is also committed to getting the public, especially young people, excited about astrobiology and science in general.
Seth hosts “Big Picture Science,” the SETI Institute’s weekly radio show. The one-hour program uses interviews with leading researchers and lively and intelligent storytelling to tackle big questions like: What came before the Big Bang? How does memory work? Will our descendants be human or machine? What’s the origin of humor? Big Picture Science can be found on iTunes and other podcast sites.

| Perspectives on the Theory of Everything with Eric Weinstein, Sabine Hossenfelder, & Lee Smolin | 08 Aug 2024 | 01:26:03 | |
Are we any closer to understanding the fundamental nature of reality?
Experimental evidence for any current Theory of Everything is, at best, inconclusive. This is perhaps the greatest fundamental challenge facing physics.
That lack of progress has opened up a sea of controversy.
In this thought-provoking episode, I joined forces with Matt O’Dowd to debate some of the brightest minds in theoretical physics on the complexities surrounding the quest for a Theory of Everything. We were joined by Eric Weinstein, Sabine Hossenfelder, and Lee Smolin,
We discussed the historical context and current challenges of unifying quantum mechanics with gravity, and the need for fresh perspectives and a broader range of approaches.

| Is Science in a Legitimacy Crisis? | Peter Boghossian (#346) | 13 Sep 2023 | 01:22:44 | |
Today, I sat down with someone who I respect greatly – Peter Boghossian. Peter is a former Portland State University professor, renowned philosopher, and best-selling author. His primary research areas are critical thinking and moral reasoning.
He actually resigned from his position at Portland State University because he felt that ideology had taken over the institution and that he did not have enough freedom as a scholar to continue his work.
So, there’s no one better to talk to about the current legitimacy crisis in science and the moral obligations of scientists when it comes to communicating science to the public. We also dive deep into religion, the origin of the universe, and quantum computing.
Tune in!
Key Takeaways:
Do we have to agree on everything? (00:00)
Can there be an infinite regress? (03:20)
Why do we need a unified field theory? (13:12)
On Eric Weinstein’s theory (23:43)
Joe Rogan vs. Peter Hotez: Should scientists debate publicly? (37:53)
Legitimacy crisis and death of expertise (56:38)

| The MASSIVE STEM Graduate Exodus - What’s Going Wrong? | John Skrentny | 04 Aug 2024 | 01:04:11 | |
Did you know that most STEM graduates don't end up working in STEM fields?
This surprising fact isn’t due to a lack of demand—tech companies dominate our landscape, from AI to smartphones, yet up to 70% of STEM graduates choose different paths.
Why is that? Are we failing our STEM graduates?
I sat down with John Skrentny, a renowned sociologist and professor at UCSD. John recently explored this issue in his thought-provoking book Wasted Education. We unpack why many STEM graduates feel undervalued and unfulfilled in their jobs, leading them to leave the field entirely.
John shares his thoughts on the cultural and systemic problems within the tech industry that contribute to this attrition.
From poor employer treatment to the toxic work culture, we discuss what needs to change to retain our brightest minds in STEM.
How can we better support them? Tune in to this thought-provoking episode to find out.

| Does Dr. Stephen C. Meyer Have Evidence for Intelligent Design? (#345) | 12 Sep 2023 | 01:27:00 | |
Is intelligent design a scientific possibility worth exploring? According to today’s guest, Dr. Stephen C. Meyer, it is, and he claims he has scientific evidence to prove it!
Dr. Stephen C. Meyer is a former geophysicist and college professor who received his Ph.D. in the philosophy of science from the University of Cambridge. He directs the Center for Science and Culture at the Discovery Institute in Seattle. He authored the bestselling books Darwin’s Doubt, Signature in the Cell, and most recently, Return of the God Hypothesis, a book we discuss in depth in our interview.
You may be wondering what an advocate of intelligent design is doing on a show with a practicing cosmologist who frequently declares himself to be a devout agnostic and if I, a respected cosmologist, am getting into intelligent design. Well, tune in, and you’ll find out!
Let’s get into it!
Key Takeaways:
Intro (00:00)
Why Stephen’s work is so controversial (03:21)
The level of epistemic support in his evidence (16:03)

| Steven Koonin: Stop POLITICIZING Climate Science! (#344) | 06 Sep 2023 | 01:09:10 | |
Is climate science being politicized? Are facts being misrepresented and distorted to fit a certain narrative? Are climate scientists trying to dictate policy instead of investigating the actual truth? And what does it mean to be accused of being a global warming denier?
Here today to discuss this controversial topic with me is no other than Steven Koonin! Steven is a renowned theoretical physicist and has recently been working on urban studies and government policies.
He has also published a very provocative book, Unsettled: What Climate Science Tells Us, What It Doesn't, and Why It Matters. The book caused a lot of controversy as it challenged the dominant narrative on global warming, and today, he is here to state his case!

Watch the video of our conversation https://youtu.be/nlrDky-fCtc?sub_confirmation=1
Once again, I had the pleasure of speaking to one of the world's most famous and perhaps most controversial astrophysicists – Avi Loeb! For those of you who don’t know him, Avi is a professor of science at Harvard University, theoretical physicist, astrophysicist, and cosmologist. He is also a bestselling author and a dear friend of mine.
Avi just published Interstellar: The Search for Extraterrestrial Life and Our Future in the Stars. In it, he explains why we need to become an interstellar species to ensure our survival and lays out a plan for how we can settle among the stars. As usual, we take some time to judge a book by its cover and discuss what went into the making of this book. We also dig into the recent Galileo Project expedition to the Pacific Ocean to retrieve spherules of the first recognized interstellar meteor, IM1, led by Avi, and discuss whether they found evidence of alien technology!

| Juan Maldacena: What Is A Wormhole? (#338) | 15 Aug 2023 | 01:20:25 | |
Juan Maldacena joined Professor Brian Keating for his first-ever podcast to discuss his fascinating work on black holes, AdS CFT, and 'human traversable wormholes and fundamental physics. We discussed the Multiverse, Black Holes, Wormholes, SETI, Life on Einstein Lane at the Institute for Advanced Study, wormholes in movies like Interstellar, and more.
Brian and Juan start by chatting about his recent paper "HUMANLY TRAVERSABLE WORMHOLES" https://arxiv.org/abs/2008.06618 which is based, in part, on this earlier paper: "Traversable wormholes in four dimensions" https://arxiv.org/abs/1807.04726
Sign up for Professor Keating's newsletter, we'll send you links to download two explanatory talks on these papers. Please join my mailing list; just click here 👉 http://briankeating.com/mailing_list.php
We also discussed an interesting economic analog to the Higgs Mechanism first elaborated by Dr. Pia Malaney and Dr. Eric Weinstein, explaining gauge theory and electromagnetism. See Juan's paper "The symmetry and simplicity of the laws of physics and the Higgs boson" here: https://arxiv.org/pdf/1410.6753.pdf . You will also enjoy his video lecture based on that paper here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQF7kkWjVWM
Juan Martín Maldacena (September 10, 1968 in Buenos Aires, Argentina) is a theoretical physicist and the Carl P. Feinberg Professor in the School of Natural Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Study. He has made significant contributions to the foundations of string theory and quantum gravity. His most famous discovery is the AdS/CFT correspondence, a realization of the holographic principle in string theory.

| String Gas Cosmology: Challenging Inflation | Robert Brandenberger (#336) | 09 Aug 2023 | 01:55:51 | |
Watch this episode on YouTube to see the slides: https://youtu.be/G3xy-bEDJCY
"I view string theory as the most promising way to quantize matter and gravity in a unified way. We need both quantum gravity and we need unification and a quantization of gravity. One of the reasons why string theory is promising is that there are no singularities associated with those singularities are the same type that they offer point particles." — Robert Brandenberger
In this thought-provoking conversation, my grad school mentor, Robert Brandenberger shares his unique perspective on various cosmological concepts. He challenges the notion of the fundamental nature of the Planck length, questioning its significance and delving into intriguing debates surrounding its importance in our understanding of the universe. He also addresses some eyebrow-raising claims made by Elon Musk about the limitations imposed by the Planck scale on the number of digits of pi.
Moving on to the topic of inflation and its potential detectability, Robert sheds light on the elusive B mode fluctuations and the role they play in understanding the flaws of general relativity. He explains why detecting these perturbations at the required scale may be beyond our current technological capabilities. The discussion further explores the motivations behind the search for cosmic strings in the microwave sky and the implications they hold for particle physics models beyond the standard model.
With his expertise in gravity and the quantization of mass, Robert Brandenberger emphasizes the need for a quantum mechanical approach to gravity. He discusses the emergence of time, space, and a metric from matrix models, offering new insights into the foundations of our understanding of the universe. The speaker's work challenges conventional notions of inflation and proposes alternative models, such as string gas cosmology, as potential solutions.
Beyond the scientific aspects, Robert Brandenberger reflects on his role as a scientist and educator. He expresses his gratitude to a mentor and shares advice he received about navigating the academic world. Additionally, he discusses the evolution of being a professor over the past three decades and shares his thoughts on the profession as a whole.

| The Discovery of The Century or BUST? High Temperature Superconductor | Inna Vishik and Jorge Hirsch (#335) | 06 Aug 2023 | 01:06:29 | |
See the video of this episode here: https://www.youtube.com/live/qQnDatnAWP4?feature=share
Breaking news! A team of scientists in South Korea has made an extraordinary claim: they have discovered a room-temperature ambient-pressure superconductor. This means that they have found a material that can conduct electricity perfectly under everyday conditions.
This is a huge deal. If it's true, it could revolutionize many technologies. We could have perfectly efficient power grids, levitating trains, and commercially viable fusion reactors. The possibilities are endless.
But the scientific community is taking this with a grain of salt. There have been many claims of room-temperature superconductors in the past, and they've all turned out to be false. So we need to be careful before we get too excited.
The researchers behind this latest claim say that they've done their due diligence. They've repeated their experiments multiple times, and they've had their results peer-reviewed. But until their work is published in a peer-reviewed journal, we won't know for sure if they're right.
So tune in to this thrilling chat between experimentalist Professor Inna Vishik of UC Davis and my colleague Professor Jorge Hirsch, a theorist and past guest here at UCSD. This is one is a must-watch.

| UAP Disclosure: Eyewitness encounters with Ryan Graves (#334) | 31 Jul 2023 | 01:21:54 | |
See the Video of this episode here! https://youtu.be/tnQtfv93agA
"The gimbal object...we had never seen anything like that before!"
In today's episode, we have a fascinating conversation with Ryan Graves, who shares his encounters with multiple unidentified objects that flew past Navy F-18 aircraft over extended periods.
As we delve into this extraordinary event, we explore the complexities surrounding unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs) and the challenges of reporting them. From the stigma surrounding UAP sightings to the need for standardized reporting procedures, we uncover the implications for aviation safety and discuss the importance of gathering data to ensure the security of our airspace. Join us as we navigate the mysterious realm of UAPs and contemplate their significance in our modern world. Get ready to explore the unknown on The INTO THE IMPOSSIBLE Podcast.
Ryan's fresh off his congressional testimony: Wednesday's hearing included testimony from two former U.S. Navy aviators, Ryan, and David Fravor, both witnesses to separate highly publicized encounters with what appeared to be unconventional aircraft operating in U.S. military airspace.
Today's hearing included testimony from a whistleblower who has alleged the Pentagon is hiding evidence of "non-human intelligence." David Grusch, a decorated former combat officer and veteran of the Pentagon's intelligence community testified, and we discussed his claims. In a report published last month, Grusch alleged that he had received "extensive classified information about deeply covert programs that he says possess retrieved intact and partially intact craft of non-human origin." Grusch's statements have received attention from major news outlets and U.S. politicians.

| Avi Loeb: “This object came from another solar system!” (#331) | 18 Jul 2023 | 01:13:57 | |
See the Video! https://youtube.com/live/BFuW-zfH5RU
Avi Loeb joined Brian Keating after he led a Galileo Project expedition to the Pacific Ocean to retrieve spherules of the first recognized interstellar meteor, IM1. These samples were brought back to Harvard College Observatory over 50 spherules in total, which lay on the deep ocean floor for nearly a decade. These sub-millimeter-sized spheres, which appear under a microscope as beautiful metallic marbles, were concentrated along the expected path of IM1 — about 85 kilometers off the coast of Manus Island in Papua New Guinea. Their discovery opens a new frontier in astronomy, where what lay outside the solar system is studied through a microscope rather than a telescope. That 83% of the matter in the universe is apparently composed of dark matter which was not found yet in the solar system should teach us modesty in forecasting the nature of interstellar objects.

| Nobel Laureate Adam Riess: Tension In The Cosmos! (#329) | 09 Jul 2023 | 01:01:54 | |
Watch the full video on youtube here: https://youtu.be/b3Tx1g8gKmY
Other Episode with Adam Riess: https://youtu.be/WZUqzHRuzhA
Adam Riess is a renowned astrophysicist recognized for his groundbreaking research on the expansion of the universe with the 2011 Nobel Prize in physics Through extensive measurements and collaborations with other scientists, Riess discovered an intriguing tension in the size of the universe's expansion, which has steadily grown over the past decade. These results, reaching a significant level of more than 5 sigma, revealed an unexpected phenomenon: the rate of the universe's expansion seems to differ based on whether one starts from the beginning shortly after the big bang or from the present. This unexpected autonomy in the expansion challenged the traditional cosmological model, which tells the story of the universe's evolution from its inception to its current state. Riess's research has generated suspicion among many scientists, leading them to question whether the cosmological model itself needs revision. In his pursuit of unraveling the mysteries of the universe, Riess reminds us that advanced technology may often be mistaken for something magical.
On this episode of INTO THE IMPOSSIBLE Riess explores the challenges of measuring distances in the universe and the discrepancies between measurements of the expansion rate of the universe first observed by Edwin Hubble namesake of The Hubble Constant, a pillar of cosmology. From the use of parallax (dating back to ancient Greece) to the use of Cepheid variables and Type 1a supernovae, Riess takes listeners on a journey through the cosmic distance ladder and the problem of the variation in the measurement of the Hubble constant known as the Hubble Tension. The possible role of dark energy is discussed, opening up new avenues for scientific investigation. Riess shares insights into the concept of the cosmological principle, and how it is challenged by the Hubble Tension.
The conversation touches on peak experiences, the awe-inspiring encounters with nature that trigger moments of gratitude and curiosity, and the importance of sustaining these feelings in scientific exploration.
Riess highlights the empirical nature of observational cosmology and the need for continued data collection and refining of models. Black holes, gravitational lensing, and Adam’s motivations to pursue precision science are discussed.

Andy Friedman, Brian Keating and David Brin Many Worlds & The Multiverse: https://youtu.be/9oahwWBcg1A
Three years ago our beloved colleague, Astrophysicist Andrew Friedman unexpectedly and tragically passed away. Andy was an outstanding science communicator and presented at many events with your host Brian Keating and other colleagues from the Arthur C. Clark Center For Human Imagination and UC San Diego. This is a replay recording of one of his last public appearences where he discussed one of his favorite subjects, Quantum Entanglement and Bell’s Inequality.
Einstein famously thought Quantum entanglement was impossible and called it spooky action at a distance.
Dr. Friedman was a Principle collaborator on an experiment of such galactic scale that it was the subject of a PBS NOVA Feature documentary, Einstein’s Quantum Riddle.
Along with Andy’s articulate explanation of the cosmic bell test experiment using distant Quasars, your host professor Brian Keating moderates a panel that includes Jason Gallicchio (Professor of Physics, Harvey Mudd College) and David Brin (physicist and Hugo & Nebula-winning author).
As a testament to Andy’s vision and science acumen, since this event, Andy’s collaborator, Anton Zeilinger shared the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics with John Clauser and Alain Aspect, for experiments with entangled photons, further establishing the violation of Bell inequalities and pioneering quantum information science. Their results have cleared the way for new technology based on quantum information profound implications.

| Kim Stanley Robinson: The High Sierra: A Love Story (#325) | 25 Jun 2023 | 01:06:56 | |
Watch the video of this episode here.
In this live in-studio episode of The INTO THE IMPOSSIBLE, host Brian Keating sat down with renowned science fiction author, Kim Stanley Robinson, to discuss his fist major non-fiction work, The High Sierra: A Love Story. Equal parts memoir, guidebook, geology tutorial, and historiography, in High Sierra, Robinson describes the geological forces that shaped the Sierras and the history of its exploration, going back to the indigenous peoples who made it home and whose traces can still be found today in the knapping fields of obsidian chips. He celebrates the people whose ideas and actions protected the High Sierra for future generations. He describes uniquely beautiful hikes and the trails to be avoided. Robinson’s own life-altering events, defining relationships, and unforgettable adventures form the narrative’s spine. And he illuminates the human communion with the wild and with the sublime, including the personal growth that only seems to come from time spent outdoors.
Stan reveals his writing process (he treats it as a job and doesn’t “wait” for inspiration). Keating and Robinson also discuss Robinson's book, "Galileo's Dream" exploring one of Professor Keating’s heroes and the lessons Stan learned from researching the great scientist.
Robinson emphasizes the importance of melding science and art, arguing that the split between them is due to a lack of understanding and a unified approach is essential to the progress of humanity. He defends John Muir against accusations of racism, and mistreatment of Native Americans, pointing out Muir's desire to preserve the Sierras, his recognition of Native American stewardship and his admonitions to get outside.
Host Keating even gets feedback on his science fiction novel pitch.
Kim Stanley Robinson is a New York Times bestseller and winner of the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus awards. He is the author of more than twenty books, including the bestselling Mars trilogy and the critically acclaimed 2312, Shaman, New York 2140, and The Ministry for the Future. He traveled in Antarctica twice, courtesy of the US National Science Foundation. In 2008, he was named a “Hero of the Environment” by Time magazine, and he works with the Sierra Nevada Research Institute. He lives in Davis, California.

| Sir Roger Penrose Faith, Fantasy, and the Big Questions in Modern Physics (#324) | 22 Jun 2023 | 01:45:23 | |
Watch the video of Sir Roger's lecture here: https://youtu.be/smUYz9ti_bA
Sir Roger Penrose, the celebrated English mathematician and physicist as well as author of numerous books, including The Emperor's New Mind: Concerning Computers, Minds, and the Laws of Physics, joined the Clarke Center to share a talk titled "Fashion, Faith and Fantasy and the Big Questions in Modern Physics" based on his book of the same name.
In his book Fashion, Faith and Fantasy and the Big Questions in Modern Physics, Roger Penrose argues that fashion, faith, and fantasy, while sometimes productive and even essential in physics, may be leading today's researchers astray in three of the field's most important areas—string theory, quantum mechanics, and cosmology.
* **String theory** is a branch of theoretical physics that attempts to unify all of the fundamental forces of nature in a single framework. However, string theory requires the existence of six extra hidden dimensions, which Penrose argues is not physically plausible. He also cautions that the fashionable nature of string theory can cloud our judgment of its plausibility.
* **Quantum mechanics** is a fundamental theory in physics that provides a description of the physical properties of nature at the scale of atoms and subatomic particles. However, Penrose argues that quantum mechanics is based on a number of unproven assumptions, and that it may not be applicable to all physical systems.
* **Cosmology** is the study of the origin, evolution, and eventual fate of the universe. Penrose argues that many of the current fantastical ideas about the origins of the universe cannot be true, but that an even wilder reality may lie behind them.
Penrose concludes by arguing that fashion, faith, and fantasy should be replaced by physics: theories which, although they may be completely wrong, can at least be tested in the foreseeable future and discarded if they disagree with experiment or investigated further if not excluded by the results.
The book has been praised by some physicists for its insights into the current state of physics, while others have criticized it for its negative tone and its lack of constructive proposals.

| How Evidence Sometimes Loses Out to Emotion The AlphaMind Podcast with Brian Keating (#321) | 07 Jun 2023 | 00:53:11 | |
In this interview on the ALPHA MIND podcast, hosts STEVEN GOLDSTEIN & MARK RANDALL interview Professor Keating about some of the connections which bind trading, investing, and science. Brian talks about how scientists, despite being held on some sort of an intellectual pedestal, are human, and are just as prone to the foibles and behavioral errors which are common to people in all fields, including trading.
The theme, which resonates throughout this interview, alludes to the meta game of science and trading, something which was captured in a quote by Dr. Keating, and which featured prominently in Greg Zuckerman’s 2019 book about the trading legend Jim Simons, ‘The Man Who Solved the Market: How Jim Simons Launched the Quant Revolution.’ The quote is:
‘Scientists are human, sometimes all too human. When desire and data are in collision, evidence sometimes loses out to emotion.’
Themes explored in this interview are; confirmation bias, ego, and our ability, or even inability, to separate our outcomes from our ego.

| Felix Flicker: The Magic of Physics on The Into The Impossible Podcast (#318) | 28 May 2023 | 01:09:13 | |
Watch the video of this episode here: https://youtu.be/AJJGv-5Rk4I
#CondensedMatter #superconductors #quantummechanics
The tagline for our podcast by Arthur C. Clarke is “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”. Theoretical physicist Felix Flicker’s imaginative new book The Magick of Physics provides ample service to that notion. In Flicker’s book the magic is in “condensed matter physics”, the quotidian solids, liquids, and gasses that surround us—and the more exotic matter— which form the foundations for our electronic lives, and may hold the keys to a transformed future, from quantum computing to real-life invisibility cloaks.
Flicker finds magic in real physics like creating new particles which never existed before, and making crystals that shoot out light that can cut through metal.
Using metaphors of wizards, infinite libraries, staffs and wands, the book has a compelling narrative that circumvents the need for equations and charts, yet conveys real, practical knowledge.
Felix Flicker is a lecturer at Cardiff University in the School of Physics and Astronomy. He holds an MPhys in physics from St Catherine’s College, Oxford, and received his PhD in theoretical condensed matter physics from the University of Bristol in 2015. He has published in both Nature and Science. Felix has trained in Kung Fu for twenty years and has been an instructor for fifteen years. He is the former British Champion of Shuai Jiao (Chinese wrestling), and a student of Shodo (Japanese calligraphy) and sailing.

| RED FLAGS! Room Temperature Superconductor or FRAUD? Jorge Hirsch on the INTO THE IMPOSSIBLE Podcast (#316) | 17 May 2023 | 01:16:29 | |
Video version of this episode: https://youtu.be/cAMSoAUo288
UC San Diego Physics Professor Jorge Hirsch...
...joins Professor Brian Keating to discuss recent claimed a breakthrough in high-temperature superconductors, including claims they work at near ambient pressure and temperature.
Here come cheap magnetic levitating trains, low-loss power distribution, free MRI scanners in every clinic…. Or not?
Watch my solo episode about the controversial claims here: https://youtu.be/hbER0AnwXD4
Since the discovery of superconductors in 1911 by Heike Kamerlingh Onnes, earning the 1913 Nobel Prize in Physics, they have been the subject of much fascination and inquiry. Some of the greatest minds in physics have grappled with how superconductivity works to drive electrical resistance to 0.
The 1972 Nobel prize in Physics was awarded to John Bardeen, Leon Neil Cooper, and John Robert Schrieffer "for their BCS theory of superconductivity. Now the race is on to get the highest temperature superconductor possible; another Nobel Prize was awarded just for getting the temperature up to 35K or -396 Fahrenheit!
Superconducting has remained impractical, until now... Maybe! The HUGE claim: zero resistance, at temperatures up to 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Is it a scientific breakthrough, or is it very probably fraud?
The Nature Paper: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-023-05742-0
Key Concepts:
Superconductors are materials that conduct electricity without resistance.
Room-temperature superconductors would have a wide range of potential applications, including in power transmission, medical imaging, and quantum computing.
The researchers at the University of Rochester claim to have discovered a room-temperature superconductor.
However, there are some concerns about the validity of the research.
It is too early to say whether the discovery is a breakthrough or a fraud.

| The Known Unknowns: Exploring the Humbling Universe | Lawrence Krauss | Part 2 (#315b) | 10 May 2023 | 00:54:47 | |
Lawrence Krauss is an internationally known theoretical physicist, bestselling author, and acclaimed lecturer. He is currently President of The Origins Project Foundation, and host of The Origins Podcast. In this episode Professor Krauss discusses his 10th and most recent book: The Edge of Knowledge: Unsolved Mysteries of the Cosmos.
The book challenges readers to explore the limits of what we know, and possibly what is even knowable! Can science ever explain the mysteries of time, space, matter, the origin of life, and the nature of consciousness? Lawrence addresses these challenges head on while also celebrating how far we have come in understanding the universe. Professor Krauss reminds us tha not knowing implies a universe of opportunities with the possibility of discovery and surprise.
In the episode Dr. Krauss has much to say about the risks of AI, astrobiology, the pursuit of a theory of everything, and where science can take us. He reveals his motivations for writing this latest book, and his deep concerns for the current state of academic freedom.
As an accomplished scientist with over 500 publications, Lawrence Krauss has focused on the interface between elementary particle physics and cosmology, including the origin and evolution of the Universe and the fundamental structure of matter. Among his numerous important scientific contributions was the proposal, in 1995, that most of the energy of the Universe resided in empty space. Krauss previously served as Director of Arizona State University's Origins Project, and Foundation Professor for a decade from 2008-2018, and also as Chair of the Board of Sponsors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists from 2006-2018. During his career Prof. Krauss has held endowed professorships and distinguished research appointments at institutions including Harvard University, Yale University, University of Chicago, Boston University, University of Zurich, University of California at Santa Barbara, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN), Case Western Reserve University, Australian National University, Arizona State University, and New College of Humanities. He has written 10 popular books, including the international best-sellers, The Physics of Star Trek and A Universe from Nothing.

| Brian Keating on the Jordan Harbinger Show (#314) | 03 May 2023 | 00:52:36 | |
Brian Keating (@DrBrianKeating) is a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of California San Diego, host of the Into the Impossible podcast, and the author of Losing the Nobel Prize: A Story of Cosmology, Ambition, and the Perils of Science's Highest Honor.
What Jordan Harbinger discusses with Brian Keating:
What compelled dynamite inventor Alfred Nobel to annually reward outstanding contributions for humanity, and how would he feel about the way Nobel prizes are awarded today?
What is an ethical will, and why should you make sure you have one in place sooner rather than later?
How accolades like the Nobel prize and the Academy Awards have taken on outsized importance in their respective fields in spite of being selected arbitrarily by an anointed few - with sometimes deadly consequences.
How Brian turned around surface losses like getting fired from an academic dream job and missing his shot at the Nobel prize from disasters into catalysts of great happiness.
How you can have a chance at winning a fragment of the 4.3-billion-year-old supernova that created Earth and the hemoglobin in your blood!
And much more...
