The conversation also dug into the album’s mix of heaviness and melody, the band’s refreshed chemistry, and Ryan’s personal passions offstage—including his longtime devotion to hockey and the Edmonton Oilers. In this final episode of season 18, we sat down with Daniel Wand of Capsize to talk about the band’s long-awaited return and the release of their new Under a Hollow Sky EP, out now via Roux & Ruin Records. After years of sporadic single releases, Daniel reflected on why returning to a physical EP format felt essential, allowing the band to tell a complete story for the first time since 2016’s A Reintroduction: The Essence Of All That Surrounds Me. We discussed the creative and emotional weight behind tracks like “The Fracture” and the EP’s title song, the freedom that came with signing to Roux & Ruin Records, and recently working with producers Matt Good and Cody Stewart. A new name has entered the world of symphonic black metal, and it is Defacing God. We are proud to welcome the viciously talented frontwoman Sandie Gjørtz (aka Sandie The Lilith), as she talks about the 7 year journey leading up the debut record titled, “Resurrection Of Lilith.” All the setbacks and delays have now been transformed into a formidable release for her and her bandmates, and results have been overwhelmingly positive. Blending in the sounds of The Black Dahlia Murder, Dimmu, and Cradle Of Filth can be easier said than done, but Sandie and company have done just that, but with a sound established of their own true colors. Sandie also dives into the grotesque and thematic atmospheric tones that has shaped this new album into its dark tenor. Oh yes, this is exactly what we mean as the new face in symphonic black metal, and Sandie lets it all show in a debut record that will be talked about for years to come. Rising out of the northeast regions in Cleveland, Ohio – appearing within the dense fog in the night sky, are the atmospheric doom metal outfit, Frayle. We are joined by the founders, the mesmerizing frontwoman Gwyn Strang and guitarist Sean Bilovecky, who are more than grateful to be where they are today. The newest album, “Skin & Sorrow,” is one of the more groundbreaking post-metal releases anyone will come across in recent memory, and Gwyn and Sean break it down for us that lead to the final product. A 46-minute album filled with ethereal, haunting, and nurturing elements combined with a heavy metal mantra is quite the experience, which as a result, garners praise from other lauded outlets such as Knotfest, Metal Hammer, and Revolver. Gwyn and Sean have been at this for half a decade, but records as such give the listener an idea that they have been at this for a longer timeframe, which can serve as a great example of how talented Frayle really is. Another important facet of Frayle deals with the theatrics within their live performances and music videos, which add another impressive layer to their themes and musicianship. A talent in doom metal that is unmatched in contemporary times, and for a good reason. Capra. The Dillinger Escape Plan. Norma Jean. Converge. Just to name a few bands off of the Hardcore/mathcore genre – and if somehow someway these four came together to manifest a band made of all the chaos, the result would be none other than The Callous Daoboys. 6 years in existence with 2 albums under their arsenal, the atlanta-based band are bringing it down with all the relentlessness and madness in the music they create. And they continue doing it with plenty of well-deserved recognition, especially as of recent. From spoken word, white noise, deathcore, to post-hardcore mixed with avant-garde, drone, violins and brass instruments – The Callous Daoboys are definitely doing their part in taking things outside the box in the wildest sub-genre in heavy music. S.13 E.15 – Jason Wisdom of Becoming The Archetype22 Sep 202201:06:17

Send a text

One of the bigger comebacks of the year has finally arrived. We recently welcomed frontman Jason Wisdom of metalcore fan favorite Becoming The Archetype. Fresh off a 10 year hiatus, Jason talks about the perfect timing in releasing the band's most complete album, “Children Of The Great Extinction.” Prior to the hiatus, BTA graced the metal realm by storm while performing alongside other major acts such as Parkway Drive, August Burns Red, and Demon Hunter to name a few. Possibly not the best time to break into a hiatus while your band is gaining prominence, but dropping an album of this caliber with a promising history is as if you are picking up right where you left off. Jason talks about this and how he feels grateful to be given this chance to continue making the music he loves. Not only that, but joining forces with his previous bandmates Seth Hecox and Brent Duckett proved to be the right moment in a significant 2020. Lastly, we also ask Jason about his experience outside of music, and it is that of being a teacher and how it's been a great privilege to lead the younger generation into bigger things. There is definitely a level of pride and humility in Jason's craft. Becoming The Archetype are back, and bigger and heavier than ever before. S.13 E.14 – Mike Hranica of The Devil Wears Prada28 Aug 202200:44:16

“Time’s moving like lightning. Time shifts like a glacier.”

It's been a journey. A quite memorable journey for Ohio-based metalcore stalwarts The Devil Wears Prada. Frontman Mike Hranica joins the IUF podcast today to talk about their 8th and upcoming studio album, “Color Decay,” and how this record in particular is shaping up to be the band's best one yet. Being in this profession for 17 years can be taxing, but for Mike, it is also done with a passion unmatched while he, along with his talented bandmates, have always one-upped themselves with each album release. In addition, it's also the experiences of growing up during this timespan in the band's success which makes the result that much more fulfilling. From touring the world, to their growing fanbase that have identified TDWP as major influences, Mike has always been humbled by the acknowledgements, and in result – the feelings being built up over the years have translated into memorable tunes in the heavy metal world. “I believe you can define our band by Color Decay.” says Mike, and this album has shown that The Devil Wears Prada do stretch their limits to new territories while staying true to their core sound. An important facet of this record deals with the production side of things, which involves TDWP band member and keys player Jon Gering. Mike takes a good moment to praise Jon, which has more than provided a sense of comfortability for him and the crew during pre-production. The chemistry is at the best it's ever been for The Devil Wears Prada, and it's heard loud and clear on “Color Decay." We also ask Mike about his side projects, Dogma Coffee and Hacksaw Hockey – A small coffee and hockey apparel business respectively, which have both been thriving and serve as important strong suits for him outside of the music. Join us with a talented frontman who has aged like fine wine, both musically and personally. “Color Decay” from The Devil Wears Prada is a strong contender for album-of-the-year talks, and it's time to let the gates open for a record that will please many music fans worldwide. It's been a journey, and while time moves like lightning, the strong narrative for the band continues to build. “Color Decay” unleashes September 16 via Solid State Records.

“I hope you see our growth as songwriters and as a band.” Frontwoman Caitlin Henry is full of the ambition and humbleness that anyone could ever channel. We are joined by this talented vocalist from Newcastle-based rock outfit Eat Your Heart Out. It's been one decade into this particular world for Caitlin and company, and it feels as if they have found their stride, musically and artistically. We get the opportunity to speak with Caitlin about the highly-anticipated 2nd studio album “Can't Stay Forever,” which will tug on the heartstrings of many early 2000s pop-punk fans. Eat Your Heart Out has developed quite the chemistry between the individual musicians - blending in the sounds of Jimmy Eat World, Flyleaf, No Doubt, and Simple Plan, but with a modern twist of their own recipe. This map of creativity has made them stand out which as result, landed them on a revered label like Fearless Records. Despite lineup changes recently, Caitlin stayed focused and believes the band is destined for greater things in the near future. Take their debut album “Florescence” for example, racking up several million streams on multiple platforms around the world, and sharing the stages with other established rock exports like Knuckle Puck, Tiny Moving Parts, and Hands Like Houses. Ten years can fly by real quick when you're building on the success mark, and still, Caitlin stays humbled and knows that all she needs to do is keep singing from the heart. 6 years in between album releases can be a lifetime for any band, but for frontman Ian Forsythe of Bay-area-based progressive metal outfit Cyborg Octopus, there is a momentum swing that carries over. From lineup changes to life changes - the newest and 2nd album from Cyborg Octopus, titled “Between The Light And Air” is the perfect embodiment of everything Ian and his bandmates have been through in these last few years, while adding on a worldwide pandemic into the recipe. It could've been an easy choice to call it quits after their debut, but Ian and company stayed the course, and this refreshing new chapter entails the energies between people while affecting yourself and others. Talking about the subject matter is one thing, but translating it into the music is a completely different and unique realm that the band achieves on this exciting record. A hero's journey is the bulk of what this album is telling, and the creativity has definitely shown its true form from Ian and his bandmates. In one aspect, this album can be seen as the 2nd debut from Cyborg Octopus, in another, it's the perfect follow-up to the first record. Crank it up. Way up. The hardcore times of Stick To Your Guns lives on with their highly-anticipated 7th studio album “Spectre.” Frontman Jesse Barnett is our humble guest as he dives into the influences and songwriting that have shaped this monster of a record into arguably the band's best work to date. It's also been the longest time frame in between album releases (2017), and Jesse and his crew are more than ready to unleash this newest chapter of STYG. He has come a long way since 2003, and now looking back on the band's 20 years of existence, it's hard to believe that much time has passed by – at the same time Jesse has learned much about himself and the growth he has taken in over the years. We also ask him about the work and dedication he put into his community with All Power Books, which is an independent bookstore Jesse opened, including his record label titled Other People Records. It's been a busy life, but a thankful one, and it's all translated into “Spectre,” which is full of all the signatures that make Stick To Your Guns stand out in not just the hardcore realm, but heavy metal in general. There are challenges in keeping things going after 2 decades, and that serves as an example to that drive which Jesse has put into this fan favorite quintet hailing from the OC. Did we mention to crank it up? Because Jesse also gets on the Hot Seat in this episode, putting his knowledge to the test in recalling his own lyrics. 25 years into existence for the death metal band Origin, and they refuse to let up the brutality. In fact, here we have a band aging like fine wine. We are joined by guitarist Paul Ryan in this episode, and being from Kansas isn't something you hear every day on where this all started for a band like Origin, yet here they are. The 8th and newest album, “Chaosmos,” seems to culminate everything Origin has released from the previous 7 into one chaotic offering. The album title fits in this case, get it? Paul talks about the production processes that went behind one of the more “technically” death metal albums of 2022, including his love for the food in his home state of Kansas. Finally, touring and live music is a big part of Origin's arsenal, and Paul talks about his appreciation for getting back on the road again after so long. Plenty to unpack on this episode, tune in and be sure to buy and stream “Chaosmos,” out now worldwide via Nuclear Blast Records.

Frontwoman Maria Lessing from Berlin-based post-hardcore outfit Future Palace joins IUF for one of the more entertaining episodes you will ever hear. She's an artist full of vision, themes, and musicianship which all have pushed the band forward to where they are today. Combining her talents with bandmates Manuel and Johannes, the trio has created something enthralling within the metal community. Enter “Run,” their highly-anticipated 2nd studio album that's full of the horror themes and atmospheric elements that give this record a massive boost – Both in sound and lyricism. Maria also dives right into the sketches that she's created when it comes to the music videos leading up to the release of the new album, and it's an exciting topic you will not want to miss. One neat part about Maria's songwriting within her albums is that she pulls it from real-life experiences. Future Palace's debut record, “Escape,” dealt with her relationships on escaping that predicament; On “Run,” it speaks about the aftermath after escaping those said relationships. Telling a story is one thing, but evolving the storyline with a character that she's created from her experiences is another form of art. “Run” is melodic as it is heavy, and the balance could not be more of a perfect combination. S.12 E.11 – Brandon Elgar of Palisades07 Apr 202200:47:58

Tenacity. It's something that describes the talented Brandon Elgar. No matter the scenario, he's ready to take advantage of any opportunity, even if it means transitioning into the main vocalist for a band that's trending on the rise. The frontman of Jersey-based post-hardcore outfit Palisades talks about his long journey within the band that has been through trials, tribulations, losses, and victories. The band has also seen lineup changes throughout the years, which, at the same time, included performing at notable festivals such as Download, Rock Am Ring, and the upcoming So What?! Festival in Dallas, TX. The biggest change, however, is when the previous vocalist Lou Miceli left the band which opened the door for Brandon to take center stage (literally). Previously the band's bassist, Brandon mentions how the chemistry has always been the same regardless of losing a band member. It proves an example of how tight he and his other bandmates have kept their musicality. The new version of Palisades is not only the most mature offering the band is putting on display but also the most complete. The new album, “Reaching Hypercritical,” is a chapter that is shaping up to be the best yet. The past few years have changed them as people, but also have changed what Palisades' music has stood for, and for the better. The themes of the new record touch on mental health, anxiety, and dissociative disorders. At a time like today, it will strike a chord of positivity in the fans and listeners. Brandon has been thankful of his experiences and couldn't be more appreciative to continue composing the music he loves so much. S.12 E.10 – Sathonys of Agathodaimon07 Apr 202200:27:10

We have a comeback on our hands, and its name is Agathodaimon. After a decade-long hiatus, the German-based black metal outfit are back with their 7th
full length album, appropriately titled, “The Seven”. We are joined by the founder and frontman Sathonys as he takes us back to the dreaded 2020 when the band finally reformed. Even though the world was at a standstill, it was a significant time for him and his bandmates as they announced their reunion. It was a challenge, as they took all the time they needed while at home to work out the kinks of this highly-anticipated album. Mixing in the sounds of the gothic, symphonic, and black metal elements is something Agathodaimon have excelled at – and “The Seven” turns it up a notch with the musicianship. Sathonys mentions how “It is our most ambitious album to date”, and this release serves as a testament to that. We recently caught up with Isaac Lamb, drummer from Texas' very own hardcore favorites, Kublai Khan. In the middle of a touring cycle break, Isaac joins IUF from his home in Nashville, Tennessee, and things are setting up to be an exciting year for him and his bandmates. The new EP, titled "Lowest Form Of Animal,” serves as one of the more intense 15-minute offerings that the band has released. Isaac takes us through the draft process within the production, and how the compositions of songs differ for him from his bandmates. We also asked him about the time that movie star Kate Beckinsale shared their song on her Instagram story (WHAT?!)– which definitely turned a lot of heads in their direction. Whatever the case may be, this is Kublai Khan's year, and with the new EP out, it's only a matter of time that things get rolling for their next full length. And finally, Isaac takes a moment to appreciate his love for drumming, while looking back on other notable drummers in the industry who influenced him into who he is today. Tune in now to our conversation with Isaac, and be sure to buy and stream the heavy hitting “Lowest Form Of Animal,” out now worldwide via Rise Records.

“Eulogies” serves as the title of the new album from Ohio-based metalcore outfit, Wolves At The Gate. We are joined by guitarist Steve Cobucci to talk about the band's history and his own journey which paved the way up to where he is now. There have been painful parts in his life that we touch on that translate into one of the themes into this album. Between negative experiences, his faith, and his perseverance – Steve has been grateful to learn so much about himself over the years. “Eulogies” is a culmination of not only his experiences, but the bands as a whole. Seems as if the chemistry is at it's finest after over 10 years of playing the music they love. We also get the chance to ask Steve about other interests that feed into his creativity of music, and that includes being a carpenter and building his own studio, where the bulk of the album's production took place. And lastly, Steve shares his opinion on being labeled a Christian band, and how he views the direction the band is taking with that aspect. It's the band's 5th album, and they keep getting better like fine wine, tune in now to our conversation with Steve and be sure to buy and stream “Eulogies,” out now everywhere via Solid State Records.

Death metal and romantic comedies don't usually mesh...or do they? We welcome one of the up and coming frontmen in modern death metal, Alexander Jones from New York-based band Undeath, onto IUF. We ask Alex about the well-deserved recognition he and his bandmates have received within the last year or so, and it's been a nice reminder for him to look back on as the band gears up for the new album, “It's Time...To Rise From The Grave.” Filled with some of the heaviest material 2022 will ever see, and take our word for it, the new record is quite the neck workout clocking in at 36 minutes. GRAB THAT ICE PACK. At the same time, Alex describes how that level of pressure to drop their sophomore offering was never really there, other than meeting deadlines – And it was more of what they were comfortable with from their debut. More riffs, more gore, and more brutality. It's a simple formula, yet it does the trick. And of course, we end our entertaining conversation about our love for romantic comedies. Whether you are or aren't a fan of that infamous movie genre, strap yourselves in, Alex and IUF host Sonny get down to the specifics on their favorite releases throughout the years of rom-com. Tune in now, and be sure to buy and stream Undeath's highly-anticipated album, “It's Time...To Rise From The Grave,” unleashing April 22 via Prosthetic Records.
