Professor Craig Mahoney BEd, MA, PhD, TTC, CPsychol, AFBPsS, FBASES, FRSA, FIoD

Professor Craig Mahoney is an academic with over 30 years’ experience in UK higher education. A chartered psychologist and an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, Professor Mahoney has been an internationally recognised performance psychologist for over three decades. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a Fellow of the British Association of Sport & Exercise Sciences, an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society and a Fellow of the Institute of Directors. He has been a CEO in three roles over the past 15 years including nearly nine years as Principal and Vice-Chancellor at the University of the West of Scotland, which was named Scottish University of the Year in 2022. He was previously CEO at the Higher Education Academy, a UK national agency overseeing the enhancement of learning and teaching in universities.

A dynamic public advocate of higher education, Craig is a research active academic with a strong interest in performance enhancement, differentiated student-centred pedagogy, research informed teaching, e-learning; technology to support teaching, widespread use of open educational resources, teaching excellence and global engagement. He is a passionate supporter of equality, diversity and inclusion and has developed and supported many programmes, initiatives and change plans to eradicate discrimination and enable fairness for all.

Professor Mahoney has a wide range of experience at Board level with previous Board positions including Deputy Chair of North Tyne NHS Trust, Board member of Tyne Met FE Corporation Board, UK Quality Assurance Agency, Glasgow City of Sciences, Leadership Foundation for Higher Education, Converge Challenge, a Trustee on the Carnegie Trust for Universities of Scotland, Convener of Universities Scotland Efficiency & Climate Emergency Committee and still active as a Board member of SportScotland and Chair of the Board for British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS). Lameen Abdul-Malik, Nobel Peace Prize (2005), Futurist Thinker, Coffeepreneur

“Service to others is the rent you pay for your life here on earth” anon

Lameen has set himself a goal to impact one million people’s lives positively over the next 5 years and is subsequently spearheading efforts to support that ethos. One of which, is to launch 100 IDEAs cafe (a platform to source ideas to impact our world positively focusing on health, sustainability, technology and the youth).

Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with his colleagues during his tenure at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 2005 for which he worked for over 14 years, he focused on transferring the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology to meet its development goals in Africa. He considers his greatest achievements at the IAEA in using US$200,000 of the prize money from the peace prize, to help establish Zambia’s first cancer hospital, which opened in 2007 and treats about 1,500 cancer patients annually. In 2018, he developed a regional strategy to help Africa focus on three priorities in human health, food and agriculture and radiation safety in using nuclear science and technology to address its development challenges.

More recently, from January to October 2021, he was headhunted to be Director of Think at the Future Investment Initiative (FII) Institute, where he oversaw the launch of a unique global infectious diseases index that tracks up to 60 pathogens daily, initiated a research agenda in line with the SDGs to highlight topical issues and launched the healthcare, sustainability and AI/Robotics roadmap, as well as guided the selection and curation of ideas aimed at alleviating global societal challenges.

He is also very passionate about coffee, for which he has been writing for over 14 years under his personal blog www.fromcoffeewithlove.com and has been featured on CNNs website for Drinking Coffee in October 2020. In June 2019 he was invited by the International Coffee Organisation to participate in a EU Coffee Symposium on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, where he interacted with industry giants like Starbucks, Illy and Nestle to discuss the coffee value chain and he documented his experience in an article on how Africa can benefit from the coffee value chain.

Lieutenant General (Retired) Sir Simon Mayall KBE, CB Much of General Mayall’s 40 year military career has been marked by a focus on the Middle East, and his experience and understanding of the region is long-standing and deep. In 1985, having learned colloquial Arabic, he was seconded to the Sultan’s Armed Forces, commanding an Omani tank squadron. He was the Operations Officer for the 1st (UK) Armoured Division in Operation DESERT STORM, the liberation of Kuwait. Before commanding his Regiment, 1st The Queen’s Dragoon Guards, he went to Balliol College, and then St Antony’s College, Oxford, where he wrote a book on Turkish security policy. He subsequently completed an MA at King’s College, where his thesis was on Jihad philosophy and the ‘Civil War’ within Islam. He is also an avid student of Crusading history.

As Commander of 1st Mechanised Brigade, he was deployed to Kosovo in 2002, and in 2006-2007 he was Deputy Commanding General of the Multi-National Corps (Iraq), based in Baghdad, during the period of the fight against AQ-I, the Sunni ‘Awakening’ and the ‘Surge’. The following year he was appointed Assistant Chief of the General Staff and then, in 2009, Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff (Commitments) with policy responsibility for global operations, particularly in Afghanistan. With the election of the Coalition Government of 2010, he was appointed as the first Defence Senior Adviser Middle East (DSAME), responsible for re-energising the UK’s security relationships with partners in the Gulf, the Near East and North Africa. This period coincided with the complexities of the ‘Arab Spring’, the overthrow of Gaddafi in Libya, the Syrian ‘civil war’ and the rise of ‘Islamic State’. In 2014, after the fall of Mosul to ISIS, he became the Prime Minister’s Security Envoy to Iraq and the Kurdish Regional Government. He was instrumental in establishing the new Royal Navy base in Bahrain.

General Mayall retired from the Army in July 2015, and was appointed Lieutenant of the Tower of London. He is a Senior Adviser with Greenhill, Coutts Bank, and Viaro Energy, and the Director of Sandcrest Consulting. He is a regular contributor on Middle East and Defence and Security issues on television, radio and in the press, and he lectures on related subjects to many academic and business fora. His book, ‘Soldier in the Sand – a Personal History of the Modern Middle East’, was published in late 2020. He was knighted in 2014, and has also received the US Legion of Merit for services in Iraq.

Róbert Vass is the president and founder of GLOBSEC, a leading nongovernmental organization in Europe dealing with international security, sustainability, and economic issues. Its mission is to make Europe and the world a safer, more prosperous and sustainable place by providing policy advise and putting together right people on an independent platform. GLOBSEC is organizing one of the largest international conferences in Europe with a focus on international security, economy, and other global social and economic issues, hosting annually over 1500 political, business, media and thought leaders from over 80 countries.

Róbert has started his journey as a student of international relations at the University of Matej Bel in Slovakia. At that time, group of students established GLOBSEC conference to put Slovakia on the world’s diplomatic map.

Róbert currently manages an international team of more than 80 people composed of 12 different nationalities with the headquarters in Bratislava and a satellite offices in Brussels, Vienna and Warsaw and plans to open office in Washington DC.

The idea behind GLOBSEC comes also from Róbert’s view of Slovakia’s position in Europe. He wanted to prove that the ambition to make the world better is not limited by the size of the country you come from, or the place where you are, but by the power of ideas and determination to put them into practice. You do not have to be in London, Brussels nor Washington to shape the world. You can contribute to a global policy debate and make a global impact even from a small city or a small country as well. GLOBSEC has a strong value-based DNA that believes in democracy, free societies, rule of law and international cooperation. Such perception comes from the strong experience of a country that went through some tough eras of totalitarian regimes in the past.

Although they have started just a little student project, nowadays they have created a recognizable global brand with hundreds of media coverage. Garrett Kinsman dropped out of college to join FireChat, a smartphone app that builds Mesh Networks. FireChat became a symbol of democracy as it was used around the world at protests and music festivals. Kinsman then traveled to India on a spiritual awakening, but got a tech job instead. Kinsman spent two years in Bengaluru, working for Ola Cabs, running hardware for their Innovation Labs and building Ola Play, the largest connected car infrastructure to date. There he explored new types of wireless infrastructure and built solar powered mesh networks in his spare time. He moved back to America in 2017 to CoFound Nodle with Micha Benoliel, the founder of FireChat, where they are building a "Simple, Global Wireless Network to connect billions of IoT devices." Together they seek to free the internet.

A new era of software defined design is upon us. This evolution encompasses almost every aspect of our daily lives. I'm fascinated with the things that make up our world around us and how they got to be.

Bruce was born and raised in New Zealand where the outdoors was inherited as part of his DNA. His first leadership experience was as a thirteen year old ‘leader in training’ understudy at school holiday camps for boys held in the country side of the south of the South Island.

After his family moved to Australia where he finished his high schooling Bruce worked on a dairy farm before joining the Royal Australian Airforce. He served in the RAAF as an intelligence officer. After two decades of service in government in which he received the usual formal leadership training, and opportunity to exercise it he set up a software company in the technology bust period of the late 1990s. This remains the most testing crucible of leadership for him as he strove to attract and retain talent in a down market and with no money.

The company listed on the Australian Securities Exchange and was later sold. During this period Bruce reenergised his connections with the outdoors and led groups to Kokoda (Papua New Guinea), Hong Kong (volunteer programs in aid and development), Nepal, Kilimanjaro, Peru, Alaska, New Zealand and across Australia. The opportunity to mentor, coach and apply leadership insights and lessons is a key and witting part of these adventures.

He has worked for an aid and mission organisation, for private enterprise in Afghanistan (while living in the suburbs of Kabul), and since 2015 has been consulting in Sydney. In that consulting work he delivers a comprehensive leadership program designed to introduce leaders to the concept of values based leadership and to otherwise encourage leaders to actively develop their own leadership style.

Bruce has accepted an offer to take up a senior leadership role as CEO of an international firm which he will commence in October 2022.

Bruce is the father of four children and seven grandchildren, has one dog, writes when he can, treks and climbs as a sport, is handy with the tools so finds himself on renovation projects not his own (though there is a long list of projects around his own house), and enjoys kayaking with his wife in their handbuilt sea kayaks.

After graduating from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, Dan joined the British Army in 1996. Following training at Sandhurst, Dan was commissioned into The Parachute Regiment. He subsequently deployed to Kosovo, Northern Ireland, briefly to Sierra Leone, and on numerous occasions to Iraq and Afghanistan, where he served as a Company Commander with the Special Forces Support Group.

In 2011, Dan was elected as the MP for Barnsley Central – becoming the first person since the Second World War to resign a commission to contest a parliamentary by-election. In the House of Commons, Dan has sat on the Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy and the Business, Innovation and Skills Select Committee, and held several shadow ministerial roles. He also served as the Labour Party’s lead for the 100th anniversary of the First World War commemorations and passed a Private Members’ Bill that changed the law on organ donation.

In 2018, Dan was elected the inaugural Mayor of South Yorkshire. As Mayor, he was responsible for economic regeneration, public transport and adult education across South Yorkshire. He stepped down from role at the recent local elections.

Dan is a trustee of the Speaker’s Parliamentary Placement Scheme, a social mobility programme designed to widen access to parliament by offering paid internships to those who may not have access via traditional routes.

In his spare time, Dan enjoys keeping chickens, walking, and running in the countryside, supporting his local youth choir and Barnsley FC. He has completed the Marathon des Sables, has run eight London marathons to raise money for Cancer Research UK and his local hospice, and is a big supporter of Parkrun. He lives in Barnsley with his wife, three children and their dog. He published his book, Long Way Home in 2020.

Dan Jarvis’s top leadership tip is that times can and will be tough. Love, life and death, and all the stuff in between, will present challenges, and opportunities. But if you keep calm, keep going and, where you can, keep a smile on your face, it’s remarkable what can be achieved. And if all else fails, put the kettle on and have a hot brew. It always helps.

Roger Weatherby became CEO of Weatherbys Bank in 2000. Weatherbys Banking Group is part of the 7th generation family group that includes Weatherbys Ltd - the business that has administered horse racing & thoroughbred breeding in the UK since 1770.

He was educated at Eton College & Sandhurst; he joined 15/19 Hussars in 1982 before working at Cazenove & Co. for 11 years in Sydney, New York and London.

He gained his Masters in Finance from London Business School and joined Weatherbys in 1997. He was Chairman of Weatherbys Hamilton, the private client insurance partnership until this year, and was Chairman of Arkle Finance, the bank’s asset finance subsidiary, until 2018.

He held the post of Senior Steward (Chairman) of The Jockey Club from 2014-2019.

He was a trustee of Racing Welfare, the racing industry’s charity for “racing people” for 12 years and its chairman from 2005-2010. From 2010-2013 he was the inaugural Chairman of The Racing Foundation, which was set up by racing after the sale of The Tote.

He has run several marathons, ridden horses across Spian, France & pakistan and was on the re-enactment of Scott’s “Closing of the South Pole” expedition in 2005, raising over £400,000 for charity.

In 2018 Roger started “Creating the Future” which brings together experts in diverse subjects to stimulate discussion around major issues facing society. The second event was held in 2019 and an online version in 2021.

He was awarded Spears’ Outstanding Achievement Award in 2019.

He & his long-suffering wife, Semantha, have 4 children and various dogs and horses on their small farm in Leicestershire.

Since starting work Seumas Kerr has circumnavigated the world as an officer cadet in the Merchant Navy, joined the Army for a £5 bet, leaving after 35 years as a Major General.

Since leaving the Army he has worked in Qatar for a year as COO for the Doha Development Company, producing the Conceptual Master Plan for Doha City. He was then a Carillion Director for 12 years and is currently Managing Director of the D Group, a Business Development Company in Mayfair, London and a Strategic Adviser for Lockheed Martin an American Defence Company.

He lives in Sherborne, Dorset and London. He has been married to Sue for 44 years and they have 3 grown up daughters who are all married and live and work in London.

osh Hug is the co-founder and Chief Operating Officer at Remitly. With family living abroad he has experienced the challenge of sending money across boarders first-hand. Prior to co-founding Remitly, Josh co-founded Shelfari, a private social cataloging website, and served as its Chief Executive Officer from May 2006 to August 2008 prior to its acquisition by Amazon.

Following the acquisition, Josh continued to lead Shelfari at Amazon.com, Inc. from August 2008 to October 2011. Prior to that Martin was a senior civil servant responsible for the development and maintenance of all IT systems in the UK Department of Social Security.

Martin lives in the Lake District with his partner Barbara and 4 trail hounds. He has 3 grown up sons. When he wants to be active, he is a keen mountain walker and when he wants to relax, he is a keen follower of all forms of cricket (although that’s not always a relaxing past time!).

Prior to his current role, Nando served as President of UPS International. He led the company's business operations in more than 220 countries and territories outside of the U.S. Prior, Nando served as president of UPS’s European operations. While there, he led UPS Europe to record business performance during the company’s five-year investment program into the region’s technology, network and infrastructure, which was designed to further improve speed, capacity and reliability.

Richard Dannatt was a soldier for forty years concluding his military career as Chief of the General Staff – the professional head of the British Army. Since retiring from active duty in 2009, he was Constable of the Tower of London until July 2016. In 2011 he became an independent member of the House of Lords and is a member of the Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy. He is a frequent commentator on defence and security issues in the media and columnist for The Daily Telegraph. He is passionate about welfare issues relating to both serving and veteran members of the Armed Forces. In 2007, he co-founded Help for Heroes with Bryn Parry and is closely involved with several other military charities.

Lord Dannatt has wide experience at Board level in the private, public and charitable sectors. Currently he is Chair of the National Emergencies Trust and of the Normandy Memorial Trust and on the International Advisory Board of Photonis. Previously he was Chair of the Royal Armouries and Cadence Consulting, and on the Board of Historic Royal Palaces and a Trustee of the Windsor Leadership Trust.

Lord Dannatt divides his time between London and his family home in Norfolk where he runs the family arable farm. He chairs the Norfolk Strategic Flooding Alliance, is a past President of the Royal Norfolk Agricultural Association and is President of the Norfolk Churches Trust, YMCA Norfolk and Veterans Norfolk. He published his autobiography: “Leading from the Front” in 2010, and a second book: “Boots on the Ground – Britain and her Army since 1945” in October 2016. His wife, Philippa, was appointed Lord-Lieutenant of Norfolk in 2019. He is a Deputy Lieutenant of both Greater London and Norfolk.

Richard Browning is Founder and Chief Test Pilot of Gravity Industries which designs, builds and flies Jet Suits, pioneering a new era of human flight. Michael Dean is a Director and Co-Founder of Avamore Capital, an institutionally funded development and bridging lender, which was started in 2015. Brian Williamson is an engineer, a professional businessman and an award-winning entrepreneur. He studied Mechanical Engineering at Glasgow Caledonian University sponsored by Weir Pumps and climbed the ladder of management quickly, looking after his first department by the age of 21. By 26 Brian had left Weirs and secured his first Managing Director position. Sharon Peacock has had a diverse career that has spanned training and experience as a dental nurse, general adult nurse, end-of-life care practitioner, physician, clinical microbiologist, researcher, educator, mentor and non-executive director. This diversity has a common theme, with a lifetime of connection with the National health Service, which Sharon considers to be a jewel in the crown of the UK. She also has a degree in History. Her story is one of endurance training in the art of learning in the service of others – her mantra is ‘learn more to give back more’. 

Sharon Peacock is currently Professor of Public Health and Microbiology at the University of Cambridge. She is the Executive Director of the COVID-19 Genomics UK Consortium (or COG-UK), which has sequenced SARS-CoV-2 for the UK pandemic response. She recently recieved the The MRC Millennium Medal - the Medical Research Council’s (MRC) most prestigious prize. This has provided the data to track how the virus evolves and changes to become more transmissible and to dodge our immune system. Sharon was key to establishing the Consortium, which required a leadership style that revolved around consensus and consultation of its 600 members. Making all data and methods open access for others to use has been a guiding principle. Sharon is also a Non-Executive Director on the Board of the Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where she chairs the Quality Committee.

Endurance and persistence were important to her ability to raise over £60 million pounds in science and research funding, publish over 500 peer-reviewed papers, and train numerous scientists in the UK, and in Thailand where she worked for 7 years. Sharon has received numerous markers of esteem, including being a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. In 2015, she received a CBE for services to medical microbiology, and in 2018 she won the Unilever Colworth Prize for her outstanding contribution to translational microbiology. Her current research focus is future looking and thinking of future generations - how can we create better data linkage combined with the latest diagnostic technologies that together lead to rapid detection and rapid control the next pandemic?

Kwame Kwei-Armah is British actor, playwright, director and broadcaster. In 2018 he was made Artistic Director of the Young Vic, where he has directed Twelfth Night and Tree. 

From 2011 to 2018 he was previously the Artistic Director of Baltimore Center Stage where he directed: Jazz, Marley, One Night in Miami, Amadeus, Dance of the Holy Ghosts, The Mountaintop; An Enemy of the People, The Whipping Man and Things of Dry Hours.

Other work as a director includes: Tree (Manchester International Festival), Twelfth Night, Comedy of Errors, Much Ado About Nothing, Detroit’67 (Public Theatre, New York), The Liquid Plain (Signature Theatre, New York and Oregon Shakespeare Festival), Porgy and Bess (Baltimore Symphony Orchestra) the Olivier Nominated One night in Miami for Best New Play 2016 (Donmar Warehouse) and One Love (Birmingham Repertory Theatre). 

As a playwright his credits include Tree (Manchester International Festival, Young Vic), One Love(Birmingham Repertory Theatre), Beneatha’s Place (Baltimore Center Stage) Elmina’s Kitchen, Fix Up, Statement of Regret (National Theatre) Let There Be Love and Seize the Day (Tricycle Theatre). 

Kwame was Artistic Director for the Festival of Black arts and Culture, Senegal, in 2010. He conceived and directed the opening ceremony at Senghor National stadium. He was an Associate Director of the Donmar Warehouse and has served on the boards of the National Theatre, Tricycle Theatre, and Theatre Communications Group. Kwame was the Chancellor of the University of the Arts London from 2010 to 2015, and in 2012 was awarded an OBE for Services to Drama.

In 2012, 2013 and 2014 Kwame was named Best Director in City Paper’s Best of Baltimore Awards and in 2015 was nominated for the prestigious Stage Directors and Choreographers Zelda Fichandler Award for Best Regional Artistic Director. In 2016 he was awarded the Urban Visionary Award alongside House Representative Elijah Cummings by the Center for Urban Families for his work in the Baltimore community. In 2019 he was the Chair of the Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting. Kwame is a patron of Ballet Black and a visiting fellow of Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford University.

Guy Hands, who was born in 1959, graduated with an MA in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Mansfield College, Oxford, and then went to work for Goldman Sachs International where he became Head of Eurobond Trading, and then Head of Goldman Sachs' Global Asset Structuring Group. He left Goldman Sachs in 1994 for Nomura International plc where he established PFG before spinning out Terra Firma as an independent private equity firm in 2002. Since then, he has overseen the investment of €17 billion of equity in 35 businesses with an aggregate value of €48 billion. In 2012, Guy was named the 20th most influential figure in Private Equity International's '100 Most Influential of the Decade'. He established Terra Firma Capital Partners Limited's commitment to donate 10% of annual pre-tax profits to local initiatives in London, while Terra Firma Capital Management Limited supports numerous charities in Guernsey. He is also President of 'Access for Excellence' which promotes access to higher education. Additionally, Guy is a fellow of the Duke of Edinburgh's award scheme. In 2018, Guy was awarded Spear's 'Philanthropist of the Year'. He is also a member of the University of Oxford Chancellor's Court of Benefactors.
