Behind the Curtain of Telemann: How Do You Plan a Festival Around One Composer?10 oct. 202600:36:46

Ever wondered what it takes to bring a Baroque festival to life? This episode takes you behind the scenes of the Telemann Festtage Magdeburg.

First, I talk with Fynn Liess, artistic manager and dramaturg of the festival. We dive into how he develops and stages rare operas and works connected to Telemann, how a festival theme gets chosen, how the festival is structured, and how to get audiences excited about repertoire they’ve never heard before.

Telemann Zentrum Team: https://telemann.de/team

Then I’m joined by Dr. Carsten Lange, director of the Telemann Center, who takes us through the history of this unique institution: from a small working group founded in 1961 to a research center, a library and an events team that brings Telemann back to life.

The Grandpa Telemann and his 40 Passions02 oct. 202600:28:57

In this episode, I sit down with Sophie Maria Weber, young musicologist from Halle and winner of the Telemann-Forschungspreis, to talk about her research on Georg Michael Telemann — the grandson of Georg Philipp Telemann — and his fifty years working at the Riga Cathedral.

https://telemann.de/aktuelles/telemann-forschungspreis-wird-erstmals-verliehen

We dig into the adaptations Georg Michael made to his grandfather's works (spoiler: he rewrote them directly onto the originals, fully convinced he was improving them), his reportedly prickly personality, and the pupils who admitted they learned little in his lectures, mostly because he loved telling stories about his own life instead. By the end, we somehow connect it all back to a topic from my previous episode with Francesco Corti, tying together questions of heritage and copyright across the centuries.

Recorded from a hotel room in Norway, mid-tour, because the podcast must go on!

Two Composers, One Opera: Francesco Corti on Handel/Telemann's Otto22 sept. 202600:42:13

Okay, this episode has been such a treat to make. My guest is harpsichordist and conductor Francesco Corti, and honestly, I could have talked to him for three more hours.

This mini-series is dedicated to the Telemann Festtage Magdeburg made possible thanks to their wonderfully generous support, and a special thank-you to Fynn Liess, who helped make this whole collaboration happen.

So here's the mystery we're unpacking today: an opera called Otto — credited to both Handel AND Telemann. Two composers, one opera? How does that even work? I had so many questions, and Francesco had all the answers (plus a story that's honestly better than I expected).

https://telemann.de/event/otto-4

We also get into what it's actually like to stand in front of an orchestra as a conductor, how instrumentation gets built from the ground up, and what the real difference is between a baton and a baguette. (Turns out only one of them is edible. Barely.)

Curious, funny, full of insight: this conversation has everything. Come listen!

Huge thanks to Arcana recording label for allowing me to frame my episode with their stunning recordings!

Reinoud Van Mechelen: 🌙 From Morning to Night29 déc. 202500:37:49

🎧 Season finale | (In)Sight-Reading Enlightenment

What does it mean to perform Baroque music today?

In the final episode of Season 6, I speak with Belgian tenor Reinoud Van Mechelen, founder and artistic director of a nocte temporis, about navigating the early music world between iconic masterpieces and forgotten jewels. We talk about festivals, opera characters, curating programs from morning to night, and how to stay fresh when performing the same repertoire again and again.

While editing this episode, one thought kept returning: the audience doesn’t come to check if we are right or wrong — they come for an experience. Simply “playing a concert” is no longer enough. People are ready to receive more.

Special thanks for the music intro to the conductor Martin Wåhlberg, nmy beloved Orkester Nord and Reinoud as Sandomir. Check out this wonderful recording where I had a pleasure to take part:

Special Series for zamus: Why We Gather – Behind the zamus Symposium08 oct. 202500:18:53

In this final episode of our zamus mini-series, we meet two of the driving forces behind the “Creating New Spaces” symposium: Charlotte Nachtsheim, organiser of the event, and Mélanie Froehly artistic director of zamus. Together with the artistic director of the festival Midori Seiler they have shaped the structure of the symposium and brought this idea come true.

We speak with Charlotte about the meaning of colonialism and decolonialism in the context of early music—how the field is shaped by its history, and what it means to rethink that history in today’s world. Can early music become a space for equity, awareness, and reflection?

Then, Mélanie shares her artistic vision and the story behind integrating such an important topic into a festival setting. We talk about structural challenges, curatorial decisions, and the deep personal motivation that connects both women to this work—not just as organisers, but as musicians and advocates for a more inclusive and responsible cultural scene.

Together, they explore how music and art can become a safe space—where difficult conversations are welcomed, and new perspectives can flourish.

Special Series for zamus: Troubled Texts, Critical Questions – Inside Critical Classics08 oct. 202500:22:44

In this second episode of our zamus mini-series, we take a deep dive into the work of Critical Classics—an initiative that rethinks how we perform historical operas and oratorios by addressing racism, exoticism, and other forms of discrimination embedded in the original texts.

We’re joined by Leyla Ercan, co-initiator of the project, and Änne-Marthe Kühn, dramaturge and researcher, who reflect on how theatre can both reveal and reproduce harmful narratives. Together, they share the origins of the project, their guiding principles, and what it means to reframe canonical works like The Magic Flute in a way that speaks to our current world.

We discuss strategies of sensitivity reading, the role of text and subtext, and how audiences respond when difficult truths are brought to light. What does it mean to preserve tradition—and when does that tradition need to be questioned?

Taste of Dissonance – Rachel Brown (Part 2)30 sept. 202500:37:30

In this second part of my conversation with the internationally acclaimed flutist, researcher, and author Rachel Brown, we continue our journey into the world of 18th-century flute culture.

We speak about the flute makers who shaped the sound of our time, the virtuoso players of the 18th century and their repertoire, and the surprising way dissonance can be described in terms of taste experiences. Our conversation also touches on the role of historical clothing and why women were often excluded from playing wind instruments, and Rachel shares her own creative voice as a composer, including her projects inspired by Telemann’s Twelve Fantasias for solo flute.

This episode of (In)Sight-Reading Enlightenment is kindly supported by the Christoph Merian Stiftung.

Quantz’s Many Voices – Rachel Brown on Flutes, Colours, and Character (Part 1)31 août 202500:24:09

In this episode of (In)Sight-Reading Enlightenment, I sit down with the brilliant flutist and researcher Rachel Brown(Rachel’s website).

We explore the world of original Quantz flutes and discover their surprising personalities — not unlike the Three Tenors, each with their own temperament and flair. Our conversation also touches on the colours and expressive power of tonalities such as E-flat major, G minor, and F minor, and the fingering quirks and possibilities they reveal on the traverso.

The music featured in this episode is Rachel Brown’s recording of Johann Joachim Quantz’s Sonata in B-flat major, QV 1:272 — listen here: YouTube link

This is part one of our conversation — part two will follow with even more insights into Quantz’s world and the art of the flute.

Feminale Conversations: Female Rage, Pink Quotas, and Shared Responsibility31 juil. 202500:30:38

In this episode, I speak with Margalith Eugster and Elisa Rumici about the first edition of the Feminale Festival Basel, held in April 2025. We talk about how this student-led festival at the Hochschule für Musik FHNW brought attention to female composers, institutional structures, and the necessity of sharing both responsibility and space in the musical landscape.

From blind concerts to panels on gender quotas and parenthood, from curating with care to navigating helplessness and female rage — we reflect on what it means to stay constructive, collaborate meaningfully, and imagine the future of a festival like Feminale.

Superwomen & Salonnières: Rethinking the Feminine Past with Laura Granero and Sebastian Bausch23 juin 202501:04:57

Hello dear friends,

What does it mean to be a “superwoman” in music—then and now? In this episode, we travel from the finely tuned mechanics of 19th-century fortepianos to the bold visions of contemporary curators as we explore Superwomen—a newly launched festival in Basel by pianist and researcher Laura Granero and piano restorer Sebastian Bausch, the duo behind Klavieratelier Mignon 1904.

Together, we unfold a multi-sensory conversation, from salon culture to technological time capsules. Expect to meet the dazzling Fanny Davies—not only a pianist of Schumann’s inner circle but also a visual artist and chronicler of her musical world (hear her play Davidsbündlertänze here). We’ll also discuss diva, entrepreneur, and Rossini’s first wife Isabella Colbran (profile), whose fortune helped fund the composer’s comfort.

And yes, there were bread sculptures. The 19th-century salon scene was full of unexpected flourishes—often led by female artists who shaped cultural trends far beyond the concert hall. We dive into the curious tale of musical baking, the gender politics of programming, and the enduring influence of the salonnières.

Adding a present-day sparkle, we taste a bottle from Cava Hispania and raise a glass to Darina's second podcast, Why White Wine, celebrating the role of wine in collaboration and storytelling.

With fortepiano improvisations on John Field’s Nocturne No. 5 (performed by Laura Granero), reflections on feminist agency in curation, and a touch of irony, this episode invites you to rethink tradition with intelligence, warmth, and a generous pour.

The glass bead game of Diversity with Roger Wilson21 mars 202400:53:32
Hello dear friends, this special Early Music Day podcast episode is dedicated to looking at some obscure and still unknown corners when we think of the terms "diversity" and "awareness" in the music business across the spectrum. We will talk to a great specialist, director of operations at Black Lives in Music, outlines how this organisation advocates for diversity in the classical music industry Roger Wilson. https://blim.org.uk Music excerpts: Florence Price "The white Rose" Reginald Mobley Chevalier Saint-Georges - Adagio in F minor (historical recording) Discover more https://insightreadingenlightenment.carrd.co Write to us if you want to support us insightreading.enlightenment@gmail.com Yours, Darina #blacklivesinmusic #insightreadingenlightenment #earlymusicpodcastinsightreadingenlightenment #bach #florenceprice #chevalierstgeorges #piano #mendelssohn #beethoven #podcast #earlymusicpodcast #darinaablogina #earlymusic #remaawards #piano #tchaykovsky #list #brahms
Stage fright of Clara Schumann and 100 % "no" in job applications 17 mars 202400:29:13

Hello dear friends!

My guest today is an inspiring pianist with a truly humanistic approach to early music, Laura Granero.

http://lauragranero.com

Laura is the founder of the "Fanny Davies Ensemble", which is based on a collaborative and innovative approach. Laura is currently opening a brand new concert space in Basel that welcomes musicians with new concert formats.

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/861602174297

In today's episode, we read two songs by Fanny Hensel-Mendelssohn and discuss the historically informed 19th century perspective that has been replaced in our minds by an expectation of what classical music should sound like that excludes the sound philosophy of the time and is relevant or the Romantic time approach to music. We talked about inclusivity and awareness in relation to building a concert programme and dealing with the issue of classical music's 'greatest hits' and their problematic nature.

In this episode I was lucky having the opportunity to talk to one of the most amazing personalities I have met in my life. Dina König, now Picon, used to be a brilliant singer and is now a Tramway driver and a happy person. We talked about the hardships of the road as a professional musician and why the courage to do what we do can fade. We talked openly about the things that are taboo for most professional musicians: Money, the atmosphere in a musician's collective, sexism.

Thank you for following us and listening to the podcast!  We look forward to the next season with many inspiring conversations and pieces to listen to. This spring, on my way back to Basel, I passed by beautiful Rouen and its magnificent Gothic architecture. It was an incredible evening spent at Francois' house drinking tea and talking about the legendary teachers he had met along the way, the mystery that draws us to music, the aesthetics of modern life that help us express ourselves in ancient music. This conversation was a wonderful joy of interaction. "The past is a foreign country"/Rediscovering Consciousness in Early Music with Elizabeth Kenny18 sept. 202200:26:24

Today I had an inspiring conversation with a Royal Academy professor, lutenist Elizabeth Kenny. We talked about the lecture she gave at the Basel lute Days conference. We tried to find a way to connect early music and its discourse with the modern reality of the #blacklifesmatter and #metoo movements, and how we should deal with the context of such different eras.

Elizabeth Kenny is one of Europe’s leading lute players. In twenty years of touring she has played with many of the world’s best period instrument groups and experienced many different approaches to music making. She played with Les Arts Florissants 1992-2007 and with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment 1997-2015 and still returns to initiate seventeenth century projects such as The Hypochondriack and A Restoration Tempest.

As a soloist she is committed to a diverse range of repertoire, from the ML Lutebook (a much-praised CD released on Hyperion records)to new music for lute and theorbo: she has premiered works by James MacMillan, Heiner Goebbels and Benjamin Oliver, and these will be recorded alongside seventeenth century solo music for theorbo in October 2018 for Linn records. With Theatre of the Ayre she judged the National Centre for Early Music’s  Composers’ Award in 2016.

Liz Kenny is Director of Performance at the University of Oxford, and professor of Lute at the Royal Academy of Music. she was Professor of Musical Performance and Head of Early Music at Southampton University 2009-18. She was an artistic advisor to the York Early Music Festival from 2011 to 2014.

Conservatory, microtonality, overtone flute and Quantz/Erik Bosgraaf28 juil. 202200:34:52

Our guest today is the outstanding recorder player Erik Bosgraaf.

https://www.erikbosgraaf.com

Erik is a visiting professor at the Krakow Academy of Music in Poland and gives master classes all over the world. He also teaches the famous recorder class at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where he himself studied.
He is widely regarded as one of the most virtuosic recorder players in the world and certainly the most inspiring, with endless possibilities. His repertoire ranges from medieval music to Vivaldi's Four Seasons and the music of tomorrow. As a soloist, he is regularly invited to conduct the orchestra himself.

In today's interview, we talk about the etymology of the word "recorder," the vibe of Amsterdam in music, reading music as an important skill, and Darina will turn into a strange thing at the end of the episode! The piece of the episode - a sonata by J. J Quantz, written for recorder, traverso and basso continuo.

Historical dance and its context/late 18th century lifestyle with Les Soirées Amusantes30 juin 202200:38:38
One may ask: How is the subject of historical dance related to the main theme of our podcast, namely sight-reading? In our humble opinion, this connection is close and long lasting, and is very much determined by the context of the period and its surroundings. And why? Listen to our episode with professional dancer and violinist Mojca Gal and the founder of Les Soirées Amusantes, an association dedicated to the lifestyle of the late 18th century, Christian Robardey-Tanner. In today's episode, these unique guests will shed light on 18th century literature and explore the context of the time, dances, social behaviour, and intellectual games. Together we will consider historically informed performance practise, tempi, and other important existential questions. We will also sight-read some dances together. Aimabile by Feriol was recorded by Mojca with the help of Thys Grobelnik. The WAR /interview with musicians from Ukraine12 mai 202200:52:34

Today's episode is a series of interviews with Ukrainian musicians now living in Switzerland. Some of them fled the war, others settled here and decided to stay. Among them is a German musician who helped his friends get their parents out of Ukraine during the war. They are all my friends and it was the most emotional conversation I have ever had. They told me and Sébastien their stories, they talked about what they experienced during the war and how it affected their relationship with music.

Unwanted refinement/interview with flutist Barthold Kuijken28 avr. 202200:31:16

In today's interview we talk to a Belgian musician, an eminent flute player, researcher and professor Barthold Kuijken. Barthold visited Basel as part of a conference dedicated to historical flutes of the 19th century. Sebastien and I were pleased to hear in this episode not only the flute-related thoughts of our guest, but also his perspective on other aspects of music, the educational system, life and its context. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barthold_Kuijken The Flute in the 19th Century, watch the conference here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkSVSF3m1ZE Discover more video footage on our Telegram channel, Instagram, Facebook, etc. https://insightreadingenlightenment.carrd.co Write to us if you want to support us insightreading.enlightenment@gmail.com Darina and Sebastien #Kuijken #bartholdkuijken #harpsichord #insightreadingenlightenment #earlymusicpodcastinsightreadingenlightenment #flute #fortepiano #baroque #baroquemusic #podcast #earlymusicpodcast #romanticmusic #darinaablogina #sebastienmitra #darinaabloginapodcast
