EP 39: Nick Tountas - Why Canada is Far Outpacing the US in Advocating for the Skilled Trades22 Feb 202300:47:24

One of the things we’ve noticed in the course of hosting this show is how much further ahead Canada’s been in creating programs and incentivizing groups to get more people thinking about a life in the trades.  To shed some light on this we invited in sheet metal worker, YouTube host, advocate, parent to a son in the trades, and of all things a Red Sox fan, Nick Tountas.  We would consider Nick one of the more innovative and creative voices in this field and his cooking show, Nickflix and Skills, has even caught the attention of members of the Canadian government, with some coming  on to talk skilled trades over a home cooked meal.

There are some great takeaways in this episode and a few ideas we could implement in our own back yard, to get more people interested in thinking about the trades. If you'd like to learn more about Nick and the groups he's part of check out:

EP 38: Meredith Balmforth - From College Dropout to Successful Electrician in the House That She Built15 Feb 202300:54:19

Meredith Balmforth's story isn't unique - high academic achiever and setting her sights on continuing that in college, earning a scholarship to her top school choice.  Unfortunately, she was gone by the end of her first year, questioning what direction her life was going to go.  Mix together some ingenuity, willingness to take a bold step and some divine intervention and she built an incredibly fulfilling life as an electrician and electrical instructor for IEC Utah.

Though her story isn't unique, it shows that academic excellence isn't necessarily a predictor of career success.  The time and dedication to working in the trades, especially as an electrician, requires as much, if not more academic diligence to be successful.  Meredith's path led her to a happier and more fulfilling place and has also helped her inspire a new generation of girls to explore a future in the trades, through The House That She Built initiative.

We love her energy, passion and dedication to imparting her knowledge to others and think you will too!

EP 36: Five Groups That Can Help Close the Talent Gap01 Feb 202300:42:00

Season 2 kicks off with Matt and Derek recapping their first year of podcasting and exploring the skilled trades as outsiders.  We appreciate how much the blue collar community has embraced us and helped us learn so much in such a short time and it's invigorated us to keep looking for answers!

This season we are diving deeper and narrowing the focus to five groups we think hold answers on closing the talent gap in the trades:

  •  Influential voices already in position to advocate for the Trades
  • Entrepreneurs
  • Business Leadership
  • Technology
  • Educators

These groups have come up repeatedly in conversations and our own explorations and match what other voices have echoed. We're always looking for information to test these theories and if you're in one of those communities, please reach out. We'd love to hear your thoughts and may just ask you to be on the show!

ENCORE EPISODE: Misti Martin of Be Pro Be Proud Georgia11 Jan 202300:19:39

Closing the skills gap and getting students excited about being part of the trades as a career takes more than just providing them with information. It takes having students exposed to the trades through advanced technology, virtual reality simulators, and hands-on instruction and learning. Not only does this give young people the opportunity to try something new, but it can be the spark of something they've been looking for that they couldn’t find in a traditional school setting. You can't ignite passion for trades in someone who doesn’t know what's out there.

This is something our guest on today’s episode understood, so she took it upon herself with a team of trusted people and helped launch Be Pro Be Proud Georgia. Misti Martin, President and CEO of Be Pro Be Proud, joins us to let us know all about her initiative to bring mobile workshops to schools to have young students learn about the trades by using cutting edge technology. Many are trying to solve the skills gap, however, Misti is putting action behind her words and going straight to the source.

EP 25(Part 2): Building a Job Board Just for the Skilled Trades: Filling up the Skill Stadium with Keith Williams12 Oct 202200:37:48

Filling up the Skill Stadium with Keith Williams

Episode 25 Part 2

When you think about the jobs our society glorifies, what first runs through your mind? Maybe a doctor, investment banker, or architect — all careers require years of expensive college tuition and, sometimes, a small pool of jobs available. Why, then, are we not promoting the in-demand skilled trades?

Closing the skills gap and getting students excited about being part of the trades as a career takes more than just providing them with information. Ep. 15: How Technology Is Changing The Playing Field In The Trades With Tony Bacos27 Jul 202200:23:21

The skills gap alarm has been sounding in the trades industry for some time now, causing companies to rethink how they structure their future business plans, and inspire people to consider a career in trades at a young age. The fact is, 3 million jobs will be vacant in 2028, which will arrive in a blink of an eye, so solutions are the main concern for many trades companies. The good thing is, the trades industry is going through its own evolution while the workforce transitions as well. There is a larger focus on advanced technology with the digital age in full force due to people wanting more convenient and efficient buildings and homes.

What this means for people entering the industry is there is a need for technologically savvy workers who not only can speak the language of technology, but are informed enough to understand how it all works. This is great news for those growing up in today’s society since technology has become part of our everyday lives.

The trades industry is adapting quickly and creating new positions to account for this evolution. Positions like the one today’s guest occupies as the Chief Digital Officer at Frontdoor. Tony Bacos has 25 years experience in advanced technologies, working at companies like Amazon where he worked on Alexa’s AI. He joins us at the SkillsUSA National Leadership Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, to share his knowledge on where the trades industry is headed, and advice for young people curious about a career in trades and technology, and how to find resources to support them.

The evolution of trades is creating more opportunities for people wanting to take a nontraditional path that will earn them a hefty income at a young age. Ep. 14: The Value Of A Network To Grow Your Business With Evan Iverson20 Jul 202200:17:27

“It's an opportunity for so many small players. It’s a great place to get your start, to build a business, to be your own boss.” - Evan Iverson

As the skills gap gets wider, we have to ask ourselves why and how. The answer isn’t simple, but the point is, what are we doing about it? Recruiting talent poses a challenge in the trades industry which has been one part of the inspiration behind Frontdoor’s commitment to inspiring and empowering the next generation of skilled workers. Frontdoor is the largest and leading provider of home service plans and serves its customers through a network of skilled local contractors for home system and appliance repairs.

VP of contractor relations, Evan Iverson, joins us live from the SkillsUSA National Leadership Conference, to shed light on his perspective on the industry to give our listeners invaluable information on how they can also join the trades industry and the benefits of joining the Frontdoor contractor network.

As a small business looking for a steady stream of work, joining a network of professionals with built in credibility can be extremely beneficial in growing your business. Especially if you want to focus on your trade and not have to deal with the sales side of things. One of the biggest challenges in the trades is finding a skilled technician to be able to work on any appliance in a home created in the last 30 years, and people are feeling that. So being part of a reputable network like this is crucial to not only retaining talent, but giving a valuable service to customers.

This can be part of the solution in bridging the trades skills gap, by attracting talented individuals and giving them access to essentially work for themselves and build a business while being part of a larger network.

Tune in to find out how you can get involved and hear valuable advice for anyone interested in getting into trades and beginners!

Topics discussed in this episode:

  • Evan’s journey to Frontdoor and his responsibilities as VP
  • Benefits of joining a network like Frontdoor
  • Requirements and steps to take to join Frontdoor
  • Biggest challenges as a contractor
  • How to attract talent at a large conference such as SkillsUSA
