On this episode of Inside College Soccer, host Don Williams sits down with sports scientist, performance coach, educator, and researcher Richard Bucciarelli for a fascinating look at the science behind player development and athletic performance.
Richard has worked across some of the highest levels of the game, including the Canadian Women’s National Teams, Toronto FC Academy, Ottawa Fury FC, Canadian SC Uruguay, and Ontario Tech University. As a professor, researcher, and internationally recognized presenter, he brings a unique perspective that combines years of practical coaching experience with the latest developments in sports science.
The conversation dives into how wearable technology, GPS tracking, and artificial intelligence are changing the way players train, develop, and are evaluated. Richard explains how coaches can use performance data to better understand their players, monitor workloads, and make smarter decisions around training and development.
Richard also breaks down fitness testing, including what coaches should actually be measuring, why testing matters, and how the results can be used effectively rather than simply collecting data. He also explores periodization and training load management, explaining why finding the right balance between volume, intensity, recovery, and competition is so important for long-term athletic performance.
One of the biggest topics discussed is the growing concern around ACL injuries in soccer. Richard explores some of the factors behind the increasing number of serious knee injuries and shares practical, evidence-based strategies that players and coaches can use to help reduce injury risk.
Whether you’re a player looking to improve your performance, a coach wanting to make better training decisions, or a parent interested in understanding the science behind player development, this episode provides valuable insight into how technology, data, and sports science are shaping the future of soccer.
