| Episode 2: Floods + Extensions | 08 Feb 2017 | 00:20:37 | |
Last week was a big week, the week I got my book deal. After months of back and forth, with contract negotiations I signed the contract. And then almost threw up opening my first advance check. And DID throw up after meeting with publishers in NY. If you're starting here, I wouldn't. Go back and start from the beginning. When I left you at the end of the episode, I was about to move to Charleston after living in Chicago for nearly 16 years. Remember, I was going to start my book as soon we arrived and I could unpack my kitchen boxes. But it didn't really go as I expected...

| THE COOKBOOK DEAL | Episode 00: The Agent + Proposal | 02 Feb 2017 | 00:16:33 | |
Welcome to The Cookbook Deal, Also The Weirdest Year Of My Life, a podcast series brought to you by One Part Podcast. Over the next few weeks, I'll be taking you through the entire year I spent making my cookbook, One Part Plant. I've recorded the entire process, all the ins and outs, the ups and the meltdowns, and so many things in between. Things that I could have never expected. We'll be getting into that weirdness and also the actual process of making this book in the coming episodes. I recorded it all. And I mean, ALL. But in this first episode, it's more of an introduction. I wanted to give you a little background into what needs to happen before you're able to get a book deal. Because those are the questions I get asked most. How do you find an agent? How much do you pay her? How do you make a proposal? How long does it take from writing the proposal to getting the deal? And the most common question after someone finds out I'm writing a book for a major publisher…how'd YOU do that? I thought this would be a good place to start. So hang tight if you came here for the drama and emotional moments, those will be happening very soon, and often. I promise. As in the next episode. This is the last episode of the season. I'm taking a mini-break, which actually isn't a break, because I'm going to be working on the new podcast series during that time. So it's more of a you-won't-hear-from-me-for-a-few-weeks break. The new podcast has an official title! It's called "The Cookbook Deal / Also The Weirdest Year Of My Life" and will be a 7-episode series launching the second week of January. I've recorded the entire year of making a cookbook – from getting the deal to recipe testing dramarama to trying to finish my manuscript during a hurricane. I recorded it all. And actually, I'm still recording. I'll be giving you the first episode in the OPP feed, but then it will live in The Cookbook Deal feed for the remainder of the season. If you're signed up for the OPP newsletter, you'll be notified at soon as it launches. You can do that here, if you're not signed up already. OK, today's guest! I'm talking to Emily Fiffer, co-founder of Botanica (the online food magazine and soon-to-be restaurant). Emily and I talk about what tough lessons she's learned from opening a restaurant, the not-so-warm-welcome she's received from some men in the restaurant industry, the importance of being aware of your strengths and weaknesses, and the celebrity she'd most like to watch eating her food (yes, in a creepy way). Two interviews about tampons?! Yes. In part two, I interview the co-founder of Cora, Molly Hayward. | Episode 62: Creating Your Wellness Toolbox + Understanding Lyme Disease With Ally Hilfiger | 06 Oct 2016 | 00:59:15
I've seen Lyme disease pop up more and more in the news over the last few months – and wanted to learn more about it. The first thing I did was pick up Ally Hilfiger's book (Bite Me: How Lyme Disease Stole My Childhood, Made Me Crazy, and Almost Killed Me). The subtitle of the book really grabbed my attention. But it also made me question if this was the work of a publisher doing their job to make me want to buy the book. I wondered if Lyme disease was really that serious. It is. After reading Ally's book and talking with her, I now understand the power of this disease and how underestimated it is by so many. It can not only affect the physical body of its sufferers, but can alter their mental state, too. Ally and I discuss why her Lyme disease went undetected for years, how she landed in a psych ward at the age of eighteen because of it, how she began to heal by incorporating a new set of tools into her life, what you can do to protect yourself from Lyme disease, and the biggest lesson she's learned from living with a chronic illness. | Episode 61: Burnout, Stress, and How To Recover + Reset With McKel Hill Of Nutrition Stripped | 29 Sep 2016 | 01:00:34
I really wanted to have McKel Hill of Nutrition Stripped on the podcast. But I also didn't only want to talk about her cookbook (trying to mix it up…per your requests!). So I told her that if she came on, we'd need to explore topics outside of her new book. She was super down for this and knew exactly what she wanted to talk about…burnout and stress. In this episode, McKel and I talk about how she experienced an extreme case of burnout and what she did to recover from it, how she's incorporated mantras into her workout routine, what the heck mantras are (if you're new to them), why working out isn't always the best for your body when you're stressed, and what she's doing to stop the comparison game in her life and career. | Episode 60: How One Person CAN Create Change + Planting As Many Seeds As Possible With Francesca Kennedy of IX Style | 19 Sep 2016 | 00:51:57
When Francesca Kennedy reached out to me about being on the podcast, I took one look at the video she sent and knew I HAD to talk to her. This woman is doing amazing things and 100% creating change in peoples' lives through her brand, IX Style. Francesca and I talk about how a trip back to Guatemala led her to start her company, the difference between "luck" and "passion for what you're meant to be doing," why it's important to know of all the key players in your industry (and how to track them down), planting as many seeds and ideas as possible, and why getting a "no" doesn't seem to phase her. | Episode 59: Creating Space + Letting Your Guard Down + Kundalini Explained With Ra Ma Kaur | 11 Sep 2016 | 01:14:03
I've been dabbling in Kundalini for the last few years. A YouTube video here. An OnDemand class there. But recently I've gotten pretty serious about the practice – I now go to classes and even started buying books on the topic. I haven't really shared about it here, because it looks pretty weird from the outside and definitely sounds really weird when you try to explain it. This site is all about taking one part at time and Kundalini felt like a lot of parts at a time. But the more I do it, the better I feel. Things shift inside me. My brain feels clearer. And my mood is not as, um, moody. So I felt like it was time to share. I also realized that what seems weird to me might completely be your norm. What's that old saying about "assuming"? Yes, I was kind of being an ass about it. So I reached out to one of my favorite teachers, Ra Ma Kaur, to explain all things Kundalini. She truly knows her stuff. And, by the way, has the most soothing voice while talking about all that stuff she knows. Ra Ma and I discuss Kundalini yoga (what it is, how it works, and why it's about to "pop" in the mainstream), how we can tune into our not-so-positive habits and begin to change them, why it's important to explore new ways to let our guards down, and how this cult-looking (it's not one) form of yoga is different than anything you've ever experienced – and just might change your life. | Episode 57: Confronting Past Traumas + Chinese Medicine Explained With Giselle Wasfie of REMIX | 01 Sep 2016 | 01:10:34
This week, I'm talking to Giselle Wasfie. She's a former hip hop journalist and current Chinese-medicine practitioner (acupuncturist-herbalist). She's also the founder of the aromatherapy and beauty line REMIX by Giselle Wasfie. As I mentioned on the episode with Katrina Jane, this season I want to cover topics that sometimes have a little mystery surrounding them or lifestyles we think we know about…but might not fully understand. This is one of those episodes. Giselle and I discuss Chinese Medicine (what it is, how it works, and why it's still not widely accepted as "real" medicine), how she knew being a journalist wasn't her career path in life, her advice on looking at past traumas in a new light, and her biggest (and easy) tip on how to deal with toxic people and negative interactions in our lives. | Episode 56: Honoring Your Past, Present, And Future With Grace Bonney Of In The Company Of Women | 25 Aug 2016 | 01:04:28
Grace Bonney is back. You might remember her from a Freak Your Week appearance this past winter. But those episodes are short. And I needed MORE GRACE. So I asked her to come back to talk about her latest project (her new book, In The Company Of Women). Grace and I talk about how the lack of diversity in the media inspired her latest project, how she battles to find the balance between full speed and reverse, the biggest professional struggle she's dealing with right now, and how she broke one of her biggest rules to create a brand new project – which she's announcing for the first time here! | Episode 55: The Life Of A Clairvoyant Medium With Katrina-Jane | 04 Aug 2016 | 00:56:10
On this season of the podcast, we're going to mix it up a little. Yes, you'll still get to hear from your favorite authors, health + wellness gurus, and foodie friends…but you'll also be hearing episodes from people you might not expect. I, for one, want to learn more about the people doing compelling things that aren't in my Instagram feed or popping up on the usual blogroll. And I also want to learn/share more about ideas, concepts, practices, and careers that we might not quite understand or have questions about (and maybe even a little skepticism). Today we're kicking that off with author and clairvoyant medium Katrina-Jane. Katrina-Jane and I discuss the difference between being a clairvoyant, a psychic, and a medium, how traumatic events in her childhood shaped who is she and the career she has today, finding her true love, and the event that finally made her feel that she belonged. | Episode 54: Asking For What You Want With Julia Turshen Of Small Victories | 28 Jul 2016 | 01:11:04
This week, I'm talking to the incredible food writer and cookbook author Julia Turshen. Julia and I cover a lot of what you might expect in an interview with a popular food writer, but it was the not-food talk that really made this episode one of my favorites. Julia and I discuss how she knew she was ready to write her own cookbook (after co-authoring almost a dozen books), the importance of asking for what you want and being credited for your work, one of the most important rules in her marriage (her wife is Grace Bonney), and how being an active listener is an important first step in creating change. | Episode 53: Turning A Dead End Into A U-turn With Jensen Karp Of Kanye West Owes Me Three Hundred Dollars | 25 May 2016 | 00:53:28
So, I wasn't supposed to bring you another pod this month buuuuttt to celebrate the OPP cookbook shoot, I'm doing it. Your support really helped make this book happen, and I wanted to give you a little something in return. And this little something is pretty special, because Jensen Karp is this week's guest. Jensen is a writer, comedian, and old friend who once had an intervention with me about wearing fewer capes (and by fewer, I mean none). Jensen and I talk about his million-dollar rap-record deal, how he dealt with that record never being released, the health scare that inspired him to write his new book (Kanye West Owes Me Three Hundred Dollars: And Other True Stories Of A White Rapper Who Almost Made It Big), and why he believes that when you hit a dead end there's always a U-turn. | Episode 52: Why Healthy Eating Doesn't Solve All Your Problems + Being An Introvert + Hustling Hard With Laura Miller Of Raw. Vegan. Not Gross. | 02 May 2016 | 00:51:28
Laura Miller is here! You may know her from crazy food ensembles, popular Tastemade videos, or her upcoming book (Raw. Vegan. Not Gross.), but what you might not know is that she struggled lots personally and professionally to get to where she is today. Laura gets candid about some of these issues and what she did to get to the other side. Laura and I talk about how she went through a dozen jobs before landing a career in food, how she became the trojan horse of introverts, why she believes good food/diet isn't the magic pill cure-all for being truly healthy, how she's dealt with the mean girls and boys of the Internet, and how she's helping other women with her #froobs (food + boobs) community. | Episode 51: The Last Great Female Health Taboo + What You Can Do About It With Shannon Cohn Of Endo What? | 23 Mar 2016 | 00:50:57
Surprise! New podcast. I know we never release mid-week, but this topic and guest were too important not to share right away. I'm talking with filmmaker Shannon Cohn about Endo What?, her new documentary. This new film not only gives all the facts and information that your doctor never told you about endometriosis, but encourages and inspires women to be more empowered with their healthcare choices to treat it. And it is beyond powerful. Shannon and I discuss why more women with endometriosis aren't diagnosed sooner, how her own battle with the disease inspired her to make this film, the impact environmental toxins play with endo, the number one diet change you can make to possibly help manage endo symptoms, and why women's below-the-waist health issues are the last great health taboo.
