Ep. 152: Grave Mistake: RAGING SLAB Shoulda Been Huge!!!18 Nov 202201:43:47

This week we celebrate our 20th installment of an ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. We bring you an in-depth exploration of an awesome boogie metal / southern rock n’ punk band from the grimy & gritty NYC Lower East Side of the 1980s: RAGING SLAB! This band featured equal parts Skynyrd and Metallica complete with a kick-ass bottleneck slide lead guitar. Touring with a cross-section of bands like Chili Peppers, Ramones, Molly Hatchet, GnR, and Warrant while boasting a southern rock stomp pre-dating The Black Crowes; we think this band Shoulda Been Huge!!!

This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that we featured on the show earlier this year during our exploration of Genres From The Netherworld (Ep. 137). Robert enjoyed them so much, he asked that they be revisited at some point. Unfortunately, their amazing brand of boogie metal was never recognized to the degree that it deserved; partly due to a series of unfortunate incidences and pure bad luck.

Songs this week include:

  1. Raging Slab – “Mr. Lucky” from Assmaster (1987)
  2. Raging Slab – “Get Off My Jollies” from True Death (1988)
  3. Raging Slab – “Bent For Silver” from Raging Slab (1989)
  4. Raging Slab – “Lord Have Mercy” from Dynamite Monster Boogie Concert (1993)
  5. Raging Slab - “C’mon N’ On” from Sing Monkey Sing (1996)
  6. Raging Slab – “Sir Lord Ford…” from The Dealer (2001)
  7. Raging Slab – “Ruby” from (Pronounced Eat-Shit) (2002)
  8. Raging Slab – “Bury Me Deep” from (Pronounced Eat-Shit) (2002)

Gothtober is finally here! Your two favorite wraiths show their appreciation of the grim and ghastly as they don all-black garb, guy-liner, and a healthy dose of black no. 1 on their mop tops. This time the ghosts and goblins get heavy… That’s right, everything turns grey as they, explore the dark and doomy world of Goth Metal!!!

What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. Robert is forced to test his endurance and provide feedback, as he has no idea what he will be subjected to every week. Our hope is that we turn you on to something that was lost on your ears, or something you've simply forgotten about, or that (in our opinion) should have been the next big thing.

Songs this week include:

  1. Pardise Lost – “The Last Time” from Draconian Times (1995)

Ep. 244: In The Shadow Of... MUSE23 Aug 202401:19:53

This week: a new series called “In The Shadow Of…”, where we compare obscure bands to a mainstream act. This is not about copycats, but more about artists with similar vibes, sharing a sonic landscape, or whose songwriting and playing styles are sympatico. We kick off this series with a band near and dear to both humble hosts. A band whose live show made us both immediate fans back in 2004; the amazing British power trio MUSE! Join us as we discover other bands influenced and inspired by MUSE’s complex yet accessible modern rock.

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This is not a statement about bands trying to copy one another, but more that they have a shared sound and vision. It’s been said that there is no originality left in rock n’ roll and also been stated that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. As always, we hope we turn you on to something new!

Songs this week include:

  1. Tigercub – “Swoon” from The Perfume Of Decay (2023)
  2. Anchor Lane – “Stutter” from Call This A Reality? (2022)
  3. VAST – “I Woke Up LA” from Turquoise (2004)
  4. The Warning – “More” from Keep Me Fed (2024)
  5. Dear Sherlock – “XPTO” from Object Of Ridicule (2023)
  6. K Será – “Carry” from Collisions & Near Misses (2013)
  7. Battle Circus – “Galacticus” from Battle Circus (2011)

Ep. 145: Acid Rock n' Proto Metal From The Crypt Vol. IV30 Sep 202201:19:24

Welcome back my friends to Ep. 145 of the InObscuria Podcast! This week our rock n’ roll grave robbers share a tab and fall deep into the 1970s Acid Rock n’ Proto Metal crypt to unearth some obscure bands that helped influence and mold what would become known as Heavy Metal. What is it that we do here at InObscuria? Well, we exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This particular episode is planted firmly in the: LOST category, as all of these recordings, occurred between 1970 – 1972. However, some of these bands didn’t actually see the release of this material until the 90s and the 2000s! As always, our hope is that we turn you on to something new in a genre and decade that you may have thought you already knew everything there was to know.

  1. Dust - “Suicide” from Hard Attack (1972)
  2. Blackwater Park - “Mental Block” from Dirt Box (1972)

Ep. 141: Retro Relapse Regurgitated Revival02 Sep 202201:32:03

In this episode, your friendly neighborhood grave robbers travel to another dimension! A universe where modern-day radio plays new rock n’ roll that sounds like the classic 60s, 70s, and 80s hard rock from our world. We are discussing what the interweb calls the New Wave Of Classic Rock! There have been bands doing the retro-rock thing for years, but this phenomenon seems to be gaining momentum… It’s only rock n’ roll, and we like it!

What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection: an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. The younger generation is picking up guitars and playing that classic blues-inspired hard rock again! This retro rock thing is not quite as new as the interweb is making it out to be, but who cares? It’s a breath of freshly regurgitated air! Our hope is that we turn you on to something new.

Ep. 140: Degrees Of Separation... RIPPER26 Aug 202201:48:56

This week is our 8th installment of, “Degrees Of Separation…” where we discuss the more obscure side projects and solo releases from some not-so-obscure artists. This week we pay homage to the rock n’ roll rags to riches story that is the metal god-like voice that is Tim “Ripper” Owens. He inspired a major motion picture, not to mention gave opportunities to countless other singers from tribute bands to perhaps be considered as the replacement for the real deals. This guy has some of the most sought-after pipes of the last 25 years. All hear our warning; never turn your back on The Ripper!

New to InObscuria? It’s all about excavating obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal from one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. While we may be talking about bands that you know intimately in this episode, perhaps you are not aware of the depth of side projects they have had over their careers. Our hope is that we turn you on to something new!

Ep. 139: Splinters & Stitches - Supergroups & Offshoots19 Aug 202201:37:44

This week we look to the stars for inspiration for our show theme. Oh yeah! We are talking about bands that have rock stars in them: Supergroups and Offshoots. A band consisting of well-known artists from other bands does not always equal great success. We dive into some of the more obscure supergroups and offshoots that didn’t break with huge mainstream success or stay around very long.

What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week we talk exclusively about Supergroups featuring famous solo artists and band members along with, Offshoots which are bands that contain the bulk of a previous incarnation of a famous band. Our hope is that we turn you on to something new.

Grab your Reeses Pieces, large Coke, and some nachos, and hum along!

What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. Ep. 137: Genres From The Netherworld ...continued05 Aug 202201:30:11

This week we leave you pondering: these genres that can’t possibly be real; right? Humans love to organize and put things in categories. Music is no different. When someone asks about a band or song they ask you what it sounds like. You can either give them a generic term (rock, punk, metal), refer to another band or artist, or provide them with an oddly specific categorization like psychedelic operatic speed ska… Or something like that!

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This episode deals more with the Lost… Genres and sub-genres that are truly unique and oddly specific. We hope we turn you on to something new!

Songs this week include:

  1. Dirty Rig – “Just A Star” from Rock Did It (2006)
  2. Raging Slab – “The Shield” from Assmaster (1987)

It’s that time of the year when the boys get all spiffed up to attend the 2024 Tony Awards! No, not those Tony awards. The ones where we hand out golden pentagrams to bands that wear their denim and leather proudly! What’s old is new again with the re-interpretation of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal known as the New Wave Of Traditional Heavy Metal! These are all bands selected for the coveted Tony Award by the man himself: our esteemed Chairman, Mr. Tony Griggs!

Ep. 133: The Inbetweeners - When 80s Met 90s08 Jul 202201:33:47

This week we pay homage to bands straddled the world of the 80s hard n’ heavy and the 90s alternative n’ grunge. These were bands that were somewhat outside of the status quo specifically in the hard rock and metal world that seemed to be playing music that was more genre and categorization-defying. Thus we’ve created our own non-genre called; The Inbetweeners!

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we cover all 3 categories and even some bands that we played early on in the podcast. The transition from the hard-rockin' 80s to the punk-edged alternative of the 90s was a time like no other, and some bands simply got caught in the middle. Go and check out these songs and the albums that they come from and enjoy some music from The Inbetweeners!

Songs this week include:

  1. Atomic Opera – “Joy Ride” from For Madmen Only (1994)
  2. Crimson Glory – “Dance With Fire” from Strange And Beautiful (1991)

  6. Mind Over Four – “12 Days Of Wind” from The Goddess (1990)
  7. Saigon Kick – “Torture” from Water (1994)

Ep. 131: Forgotten Fossils - Classic Rock In The Alternative Age24 Jun 202201:22:22

Something unique happened in the 90s with “Classic Rock” radio where they completely omitted any new contributions musically from the bands. In the 90’s, the “Legacy Act” tag hadn’t hit yet and bands were still trying to be true to themselves, but still be relevant. This week we play the Lost and Forgotten songs released during the Alternative Rock era from bands that we all know and love. The More You Know...

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Many of the classic 60s-70s bands were still writing and delivering new musical content into the 90s. Go and check out these songs and the albums that they come from!

Songs this week include:

  1. Cheap Trick – “Yeah Yeah” from Cheap Trick (1997)
  2. Procol Harum – “Man With A Mission” from The Prodigal Stranger (1991)
  3. Heart – “Oldest Story In The World” from Jupiter’s Darling (2004)
  4. The Kinks  – “It’s Alright (Don’t Think About It)” from Phobia (1993)
  5. RTZ – “Another Time” from Return To Zero (1991)
  6. Rainbow – “Wolf To The Moon” from Stranger In Us All (1995)
  7. Kansas – “Black Fathom 4” from Freaks Of Nature (1995)

Ep. 130: A Woman Scorned... 317 Jun 202201:22:42

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned! This week is a special third-in-the-series celebration of the gender with the most attitude and pure ferocity. What makes it special? We have Tonya LeeAnne from Lydia’s Castle join us to talk about being a badass frontwoman on the scene today. As usual, we focus on women that truly rock! Ladies that play loud and heavy with attitude, grit, and that rasp.

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. These ladies bring it, and you owe to yourself to check them out! We hope we turn you on to Lydia’s Castle. Ep. 129: R.I.P. Alan White10 Jun 202201:32:43

It is again with heavy hearts that we deliver this week’s episode about yet another fallen drummer: the amazing Mr. Alan White. The YES drummer passed away on May 26, 2022, at the age of 72 after dealing with some more recent illnesses. Kevin has a very deep connection to YES and Alan as a lifelong fan and student of their music. While not an obscure band by any means (the Rock & Roll Hall-of-Famers have sold 13.5 million RIAA-certified albums in the US, as well as more than 30 million albums worldwide and in 1985, they won a Grammy award), Alan had a number of side projects and collaborations during his 50-year tenure with YES. Another tough loss for the classic and progressive rock community.

New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In the case of this particular episode, we are leaning towards the LOST. We are paying tribute to another titan of rock drummers! Rest In Peace Alan. Heaven’s rhythm section just got mightier!

Songs this week include:

  1. Adrian Belew / Alan White / Keith Emerson – “In The Flesh?” from Back Against The Wall – A Tribute To Pink Floyd (2005)
  2. White – “Fate” from White (2006)
  3. Yes – “Make It Easy / Owner Of A Lonely Heart” from Union Live (1991)
  4. Alan White – “One Way Rag” from Ramshackled (1976)
  5. CIRCA: – “Information Overload” from CIRCA: (2006)
  6. Levin-Torn-White – “The Hood Fell” from Levin Torn White (2011)
  7. Yes – “The Calling” from Endless Dream: New York 6.19.94 (1994)

Ep. 128: Degrees Of Separation... RUSH03 Jun 202201:25:22

This week is our 7th installment of, “Degrees Of Separation…” where we discuss the more obscure side projects and solo releases from some not-so-obscure artists. This week we were touched by the spirit of radio! That’s right: RUSH! We had to dig deep to get songs from these 3 Canadian phenoms outside of the mighty RUSH. Known for their hectic schedule and amazing work ethic of record-tour-record-tour throughout their 40+ year career, we were able to cobble together some unique songs outside their main gigs. Hope ya dig!

New to InObscuria? It’s all about excavating obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal from one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. While we may be talking about bands that you know intimately in this episode, perhaps you are not aware of the depth of side projects they have had over their long careers. Our hope is that we turn you on to something new!

Songs this week include:

  1. Victor – “Start Today” from Victor (1996)

Ep. 127: Sumthin' Smells FUNKY Vol. 5! - Wah Da Funk???27 May 202201:21:52

Can we get a witness??? Testify! This week our rock n’ roll grave robbers witness the rise of sumthin’ funky! This time our journey through funky town takes sharp left and right turns as we get funk rock from bands that may not necessarily be associated with funk. Sometimes bands just get the urge to write songs that makes your body move and your booty groove. That’s why we are asking the question, “Wah Da Funk???”

What is it that we do here at InObscuria? We exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In this episode we take a listen to all 3, as we move n’ groove our way through funk-infused rock n’ roll from bands that don’t typically play in the sphere of funkitude.

Songs this week include:

  1. Jason Becker – “We Are One” from Triumphant Hearts (2018)

Ep. 126: Beneath The Hair Vol. 4 - Forgotten Glam Metal - White-Out20 May 202201:34:05

Bleach that hair and spray that Aquanet, as we once again dive hair-first into the world of obscure glam metal. Whether you call it: glam metal, hair metal, cock rock, or hard rock… this time we are focusing on bands that include the color “white” in their band name. For some reason, Whitesnake, White Lion, and Great White all had tremendous success around the exact same time in the mid-to-late 80s. Was there luck in the name? Were there more “white…” bands out there at the same time?

What are we all about here at InObscuria? Every week your two hosts crawl down to the crypts to exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. If you dig it… go dig it up and buy it! Support these artists and keep your devil horns high in the air!

Ep. 125: Raiding The Progressive Rock Crypt - Sunken Treasures06 May 202201:21:20

Ahoy listeners! This week strap in for a 4-hour tour to the bottom of the sea of completely self-indulgent noodling… nah, just kidding! We have raided the Prog Rock crypt, yet we’ve prepared a bite-size slab of the genre that pushes the boundaries of rock music with a diverse mix of, well… everything! Kevin’s prog-rock cruise that was postponed in 2020 is finally setting sail this week, so we thought we’d feature several of the artists that will be featured on the ship.

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Prog rock in the 60s and 70s initially had mostly classical music and jazz influences, but over the last 40-years, it has come to include other fusions of music styles including metal, punk, funk, folk, and electronic. From Zappa and Sgt. Pepper to today’s Djent and Post-Prog movements… This is Prog Rock! Get yer nerd on!

Songs this week include:

  1. Riverside – “Rainbow Box” from Rapid Eye Movement (2007)
  2. Transatlantic – “Rainbow Sky” from The Absolute Universe: Forevermore (2021)

Ep. 124: Under The Grunge Part 329 Apr 202201:20:55

This week we strap on our old Doc Martins trudge through the muck and grime of the springtime in the US Pacific Northwest. Yep, time for our annual spring GRUNGE episode! We discuss the bands just outside the usual suspects of Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam. Your hosts remember this time fondly, as we were young adults when the Seattle scene invaded all rock n’ roll avenues in the US. In retrospect, this sounds like less of a movement and more of a melting pot of many of the genres that had been established in silos during the 70s and 80s. What do you think?

This episode features songs from bands outside the big 4 of grunge, but we don’t think you’ll be totally surprised. A perfect amalgam of punk, classic rock, and metal is right in Kevin’s wheelhouse, and we find out the impact this had on Robert’s musical path. We discuss the origins of the movement and have a lot of fun reminiscing about this unique time in rock history. Come jump on the hike with us to grab a Starbucks and some flannel.

Songs this week include:

  1. Kerbdog – “Cleaver” from Kerbdog (1994)
  2. Hammerbox – “Hole” from Numb (1993)
  3. Pond – “Tree” from Pond (1993)
  4. Brad – “Raise Love” from Shame (1993)
  5. The Gits – “Another Shot Of Whiskey” from Frenching The Bully (1992)
  6. Mudhoney – “Living Wreck” from Piece Of Cake (1992)
  7. 7 Year Bitch – “M.I.A.” from Viva Zapata! (1994)

Ep. 123: Grave Mistake: WARRIOR SOUL Shoulda Been Huge!!! Pt.2! Part22 Apr 202201:03:22

This week we continue our ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. This is Part 2 of our exploration and exploitation of the sleazy Detroit Punk meets NY Metal sounds of the amazing WARRIOR SOUL! This band straddled the world of the 80s hard n’ heavy and the 90s alternative n’ grunge during the first decade of their career. This time we unearth the second half of their rock n’ roll road trip with the whiskey-soaked spewing of tunes from 2009 through their recent release in 2022.

This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that we have featured on the show already in episodes 33, 83 and 119. An American alternative metal band, formed by lead singer, songwriter, producer, and painter: Kory Clarke. Unfortunately, their brilliance and innovation have never been recognized to the degree that it deserves. We think they SHOULD BE HUGE… and we are ready to fly that banner proudly!

Songs this week include:

  1. Warrior Soul – “Don’t Believe” from Destroy The War Machine (2009)
  2. Warrior Soul – “Planetary Revolution” from Stiff Middle Finger (2012)
  3. Warrior Soul – “Back On The Lash” from Back On The Lash (2017)
  4. Warrior Soul – “War Ride Children” from Rock N’ Roll Disease (2019)

Ep. 122: Everything Turns Grey - Goth Rock vol.III Featuring Brent Zius15 Apr 202202:07:45

It’s been unusually dark, cold, and grey here in Atlanta, GA for the past few days, so the boys thought it best to bring on a guest who is an authority on all things grim and ghastly. They donned all-black garb, guy-liner, and a healthy dose of black no. 1 on their mop tops and welcomed Mr. Brent Zius and his coffin full of goodies to the firehouse. Brent schools us on the dark and ethereal world of Goth Rock…

What is it we do here at InObscuria? In most shows Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week is different as our guest, Brent Zius, provides the playlist for your 2 rock n’ roll grave robbers to react to. Our hope is that we turn you on to something that was lost on your ears, or something you've simply forgotten about, or that (in our opinion) should have been the next big thing.

Don’t forget to check out Brent’s latest project album: Angelspit Vs. Ice Planet 9000 – Sequence 1: Glass Jar on Bandcamp here!

Songs this week include:

  1. Ash Code – “Fear” from Fear EP (2021)
  2. The Bolshoi – “Away” from Friends (1986)
  3. Kill Shelter – “As Trees Do Fall” from Damage (2018)
  4. Pink Turns Blue – “I Coldly Stare Out” from If Two Worlds Kiss (1987)
  5. Long Night – “East Of The Sun, West Of The Moon” from Barren Land (2018)
  6. Play Dead – “Isabel” from The Promised Land (1984)
  7. Delphine Coma – “We Never Sleep” from Leaving The Scene (2018)
  8. Angelspit Vs. Ice Planet 9000 – “The Great Empty” from Sequence 1: Glass Jar (2022)

Ep. 121: R.I.P. Taylor Hawkins08 Apr 202201:18:29

Sometimes life happens… and sometimes death happens. Everyone in the rock world was shocked to hear of Taylor Hawkins's untimely passing on March 25, 2022. We didn’t know the man, but certainly thought a lot of him as a phenomenal musician who really was the driving force behind the Foo Fighters as well as modern rock n’ roll in general. From videos and documentaries, he seemed like a really cool guy and sweet dude. This week we pay tribute to the smilin’ heavy hitter and a hell of a singer, the only way we know how, by not playing a single note from the Foo Fighters.

New to InObscuria? It’s all about digging up obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal from one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In this episode, we will focus on Taylor’s solo material, guest appearances, and side projects. If there is one positive thing to come from this sadness, it would be that all of his great music gets the exposure it deserves.

Songs this week include:

  1. Dave Grohl & Taylor Hawkins – “2112 Overture” from RUSH, Rock Hall Induction Ceremony (2013)
  2. Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders – “Shapes Of Things” from Get The Money (2019)
  3. Brian May – “Cyborg” from Another World (1998)
  4. Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders – “Louise” from Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders(2006)
  5. Coheed & Cambria – “No World For Tomorrow” from Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume Two: No World for Tomorrow(2007)
  6. Taylor Hawkins – “Southern Belles” from Kota (2016)
  7. The Birds Of Satan – “Wait Til Tomorrow” from The Birds Of Satan (2014)
  8. Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders – “Don’t Have To Speak” from Red Light Fever(2010)

Ep. 120: AC/DC Lost Songs featuring Brad Rusthoven01 Apr 202201:11:01

This week we welcome the return of a guest and fellow podcaster: Brad Rusthoven from Slamfest Podcast. Brad brings all of us an amazing exclusive listening experience. The only way we would ever play AC/DC on this show is if we got our hands on some rare odds & ends that haven’t been heard in a long time, and that is exactly what Brad brought to us. That’s right; LOST songs from the thunder from down under that you have more than likely never heard! Outtakes sent to Brad from a listener whose father worked for Albert Productions for over 30-years. Baked, digitized, and ready for your ears!

New to InObscuria? It’s all about digging up obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal from one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In this episode, we cover some Lost recordings that our friend Brad that he felt fit the format of our show more than his; as he focuses on bands and shows he’s seen live in chronological order. Make sure you check out Brad’s show Slamfest Podcast anywhere you listen to your podcasts.

Welcome to yet another installment of our ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. This one has been on Kevin’s mind since episode 1 of the podcast! They just released a brand new studio album, so it is absolutely time for us to explore the band with a purpose: anti-big government / anti-establishment - - - sleazy Detroit Punk and NY Metal; the amazing WARRIOR SOUL! A band that straddled the world of the 80s hard n’ heavy and the 90s alternative n’ grunge with a unique style that was dangerous, unpredictable, and should have been huge!!!

This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that we have featured twice on the show already in episodes 33 and 83. Am American alternative metal band, formed by lead singer, songwriter, producer, and painter: Kory Clarke. Ep. 118: May The Devil Eat The Cat... Irish Rock n' Punk n' Metal17 Mar 202201:30:00

Top o’ the mornin’ to ya! This week we turn several shades of green as we celebrate the emerald isle and St. Patrick’s Day! We here in the good ol’ US of A have completely bastardized this whole affair into a day of wearing ridiculous amounts of green, pretending to be of Irish descent, and getting extremely drunk while listening to U2, those single songs by The Cranberries and Thin Lizzy that everyone knows, and any host of Celtic-based punk rock (Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly, etc…). Not on this episode!!! We are going to go deeper into true Irish rock n’ punk n’ metal that should be added to your St. Paddy’s Day playlist and celebrated all year round!

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we listen to some artist that throw a little traditional Irish into their mix and others that just simply rock! Here’s to a long life and a merry one. A quick death and an easy one. A pretty girl and an honest one. A cold pint and another one!

Songs this week include:

  1. Young Dubliners – “Follow Me Up To Carlow” from Breathe (1995)
  2. ONOFF – “Taximan” from Don’t Take Our Word For It (2012)
  3. The Boomtown Rats – “Mary Of The 4th Form” from Best Of Boomtown Rats (1985)
  4. Whipping Boy – “Valentine 69” from Submarine (1992)
  5. Mama’s Boys – “Straight Forward, No Looking Back” from Power & Passion (1985)
  6. The Murder Capital – “Feeling Fades” from Feeling Fades (single) (2019)
  7. Celtic Legacy – “Emerald Eye” from This Lie Of The Land (2014)

Ep. 117: Pulling The Plug... Acoustic Rock n' Punk n' Metal11 Mar 202201:33:08

Electric artists have been playing acoustically since the beginning of recorded music. Usually, the slower ballads and the prettier mellow songs by rock artists were accompanied by acoustic guitars. This week we are celebrating bands that can re-imagine an up-tempo song with acoustic instruments and still rock! We are pulling the plug… and gasping for air guitars!

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we discuss the FORGOTTEN. Mtv started a series in 1989 called “unplugged”, and almost every mainstream relevant act started producing acoustic albums or versions of their songs. This week we listen to some artists that you may have never considered as having acoustic interpretations of their songs.

Songs this week include:

  1. Sevendust – “Seasons” from Southside Double-Wide Acoustic Live (2004)
  2. Thundermother – “Dogs From Hell (acoustic)” from Heat Wave Deluxe Addition (2021)
  3. Diamond Head – “Lightning To The Nations” from Acoustic First Cuts EP (2002)
  4. Los Kung-Fu Monkeys – “Common Chord (acoustic)” from Common Chord (2020)
  5. Clutch – “Basket Of Eggs (acoustic)” from Blast Tyrant Deluxe Addition (2011)
  6. Haunt – “On The Stage” from Unplugged Vol. 1 (2021)
  7. Suicidal Tendencies – “Get Your Right On! (acoustic)” from Get Your Fight On! (2018)
  8. Mercy Beat – “Pissed-Off Song” from Walk With Me (1999)

Ep. 116: Excavation: New Wave Of British Heavy Metal Part II04 Mar 202201:29:34

This week the lads hop across the pond to do some more excavation of denim and leather… That’s right; it’s all about the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal! The NWOBM movement was filled with passionate bands that were poised to take over the world. Unfortunately, most of them didn’t make it to the level of Iron Maiden, Saxon, or Def Leppard. Hopefully, we can help spread the word and sounds for those that didn’t.

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we discuss the LOST. For such a small island, they sure had a lot of amazing bands that set the standards for what is known as heavy metal. From the music to the fashion, to the attitude… 40-years ago these bands started an underground movement that would change hard rock and metal forever.

Songs this week include:

  1. Tank – “Blood, Guts, and Beer” from Fifth Hounds Of Hades (1982)
  2. Baby Tuckoo – “Falling Star” from Force Majeure (1986)
  3. Overdrive – “On The Run” from Jobcentre Rejects - Ultra Rare Nwobhm 1978 - 1982 (2018)
  4. Vardis – “Love Is Dead” from The World’s Insane (1981)
  5. Rock Goddess – “Satisfied Then Crucified” from Rock Goddess (1983)
  6. Praying Mantis – “Children Of The Earth” from Time Tells No Lies (1981)
  7. Witchfinder General – “No Stayer” from Death Penalty (1982)
  8. Fist – “Name, Rank, And Serial Number” from Turn The Hell On (1980)

Ep. 241: A Woman Scorned... VI02 Aug 202401:21:56

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned! This week is the 6th installment of our series celebrating the gender with the most attitude and pure ferocity. Piss off a man; you can fight it out and then go have a pint at the pub. Piss off a woman, and you will pay for it 10-fold… In this episode, we focus on women who truly rock!

These ladies bring it, and you owe it to yourself to check them out! We hope we turn you on to something new!

Songs this week include:

  1. The Downhauls – “The Tower” from Split With Duck & Cover (2024)

Ep. 115: Unsigned Unearthed II with Kent Aberle25 Feb 202201:18:11

This week we exhume the unmarked graves of the opening bands! They may not have been signed to a major or gained internationally distributed success, but they were all rock stars to those lucky enough to hear and see them! Anyone who’s ever been in a band and played local/regional shows knows that some of the best live acts and musicians (and friends) are met through sharing bills with other acts. These bands all have a common connection to your hosts and guest host: Kent Aberle and their band from the early aughts, Big Jack Pneumatic; through shows and opening, slots shared. We hope we turn you on to some great music that you may have otherwise never had a chance to hear!

New to InObscuria? Every week your two hosts crawl down to the crypts to exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. These are artists that are all amazing, but lost to most of the world. If you were there, you knew! If you dig it… go dig it up and buy it! Support these artists and keep your devil horns high in the air!

Songs this week include:

  1. The Force – “Fight For Your Life” from The Force (2003)
  2. JâD – “Lose Your Mind” from Lose Your Mind (2001)
  3. Slangbanger – “Upper Room” from Slangbanger Attacks! (2001)
  4. Moments From Impact – “Tortured” from Arrival (2003)
  5. Eleven Days – “Can’t Do This” from In A Year (2002)
  6. Transmission – “Trust In You” from Atlantis Music Festival 2004 (2004)
  7. The Swear – “OCD” from The Swear (2005)

In this week’s episode, we go nuclear with the almighty guitar heroes! The only thing to survive the apocalypse will be metal wires on scraps of wood and the demons will unleash the fiery fury of Shredageddon!

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we discuss all three. Get out your old Guitar World and Guitar Player mags and flip the pages as we discuss some of the most amazing fingers to ever touch a fretboard! Be sure to also check out the Jason Becker documentary Jason Becker: Not Dead Yet that we mention.

Songs this week include:

  1. Uli Jon Roth & Electric Sun – “Sundown” from Earthquake (1979)
  2. Jason Becker – “Mabel’s Fatal Fable” from Perpetual Burn (1988)
  3. Guy Mann-Dude – “Shredd’n It Down” from Sleight Of Hand (1989)
