S9-Ep19: Leadership Is Relationships03 May 202300:36:12

Guest: Kvon Tucker

If there’s one key thing that’s common to all effective leadership theories, it’s this: leadership is all about relationships. Kvon Tucker distilled this through both academic scholarship and real-world experience at Netflix, Google, and Amazon. Those companies remain high-performing outliers because of their unique leadership culture, and an emphasis on relationships (and writing!) are key. Losing sight of that leads to more than just sterile numbers on morale, low engagement, or layoffs. It leads to real pain for people, real depression, and – as Kvon saw – real suicide.

Kvon discusses all this, along with solutions for leaders who care, in this episode.

Here's what Kvon and host Maureen Metcalf cover:

  • How an old school practice – writing – leads to innovation and better odds of project success;
  • Why truly effective leaders understand the importance of relationships; and
  • The reasons that, even with all the trappings of success, your job can still leave you feeling miserable and depressed…and what to do about it.

S5-Ep36: Lasting Solutions for Distribution Center Labor Shortages30 Apr 202300:44:37

Guest: Will O’Brien & Dave DuBose

The labor shortage is not going away. Workers are more transient, looking for better pay, plus Amazon, Walmart, and other large online retailers are continuing to drive up competition for distribution center (DC) employees. So, most DC operators resort to wage increases and retention bonuses as the quick solution to this really challenging people problem. Will O'Brien and Dave DuBose joins the show to share the better answer, which is a set of more robust solutions that better serve the operators’ longer-term needs and mitigate their dependence on short-lived “quick fix” wage and bonus answers that everyone else is chasing.

Here's what Will, Dave, and Maureen cover:

  • Why pay is only the beginning in forming long-term solutions to supply-chain labor;
  • How Columbus, Ohio, represents the distribution issues retailers face; and
  • Why, regardless of the economy, the labor shortage is not going away.

S9-Ep18: Working Together: Leading a Hybrid AI-Human Workforce26 Apr 202300:50:51

Guest: Greg Moran

Odds are Artificial Intelligence isn’t going to replace you at work. It’s going to join you.

Greg Moran sees AI integrating much the same way breakthrough technologies always have. It will help us be more efficient, and help leaders make better decisions. Of course, it’s not all rasterized rainbows and Unix unicorns; to thrive, people will have to be able and willing to continually learn new skills and processes. In short, the obsessively curious will rise to the top. Greg shares the details in this episode.

Here's what Greg and host Maureen Metcalf cover:

  • How generative AI has already proven it can give you a competitive advantage by helping you make better, faster decisions on quality information, but…
  • …be careful! AI won’t make those decisions for you!
  • Why continually growing, learning, and adapting are top skills for career success (and coasting at work is no longer an option).

S9-Ep17: When Tragedy Informs Responsible Leadership: The C-Suite Journey of Pernod Ricard’s CEO19 Apr 202300:40:10

Guest: Ann Mukherjee

Ann Mukherjee’s life is one of complete inspiration, both personally and professionally. Her mother was killed by a drunk driver when Ann was just 14; as an adult, she endured alcohol related violence.

Yet today, she leads the second largest wine and spirits company in the world. Far from a contradiction, it’s a calling – one which sees not just customers and ROI, but caring and ROR (Return on Responsibility). The two are intertwined; even as Pernod Ricard promotes safe, responsible drinking, their profits have soared.

Here's what Ann and host Maureen Metcalf cover:

  • The changing role of leaders, especially CEOs;
  • How Ann sees her work at Pernod Ricard not as a job, but as a calling; and
  • The important role of mentors for career success.

S9-Ep16: Fringe or Mainstream? Leaders Explore Psychedelics12 Apr 202300:52:14

Guest: Paul Austin

You never know where the next big breakthrough in leadership research will come, so we’re going to sporadically feature outlier ideas, research from the fringe. Today is our first foray, as we investigate the role psychedelics can play in leadership development.

Struggling with the dichotomy of legality and morality, Paul Austin found himself on an unexpected journey of self-discovery – a journey that led him to establish Third Wave, a platform dedicated to using psychedelics to unlock leadership potential and transform paradigms. As Paul says to host Maureen Metcalf, “If I could focus my time and energy on one thing that would move the needle the most, it would be intentional psychedelic use by the leaders who are creating the paradigms of tomorrow."

Here's what Paul and Maureen cover:

  • How intentional microdoses of psychedelics can propel leadership development;
  • Why the proper setting and having an expert facilitator for guidance is absolutely critical; and
  • How CEOs and other leaders are already using psychedelics to help them problem-solve in today’s new normal of chaos and disruption.

S9-Ep13: Reality Lost - How Disinformation Shapes Your World22 Mar 202300:57:48

Guest: Tara McGowan

Misinformation and disinformation have become the lifeblood of social media – even some cable channels hungry for ratings. But, as a leader, you need hard facts and straight information.

How did we get here, and what can you do to find the good data your decisions need? Tara McGowan, founder and publisher of Courier Newsroom, notes that propaganda and disinformation have always existed…but social media’s algorithms have amplified it exponentially, creating hard echo chambers that can be hard for truth to get through. And, she says, that puts not just your business at risk, but democracy itself. Fortunately, she has some solutions!

Here's what Tara and host Maureen Metcalf cover:

  • How social media algorithms work – and revolutionized the spread of misinformation;
  • Ways leaders can recognize disinformation and halt its spread; and
  • Simple steps we can all take to be media literate.

S9-Ep12: Onboard with Care: Welcoming a New Leader18 Mar 202300:46:05

Guests: Brenda Hampel & Erika Lamont

More than 40% of new leaders fail within 18 months. Why?

Don’t blame the leader; look at the organization instead! Most organizations don’t onboard a new leader well, if at all. They assume a person’s success at one company will automatically transfer to theirs – but there are far too many variables at play to bank on that. Instead, an onboarding plan that goes beyond HR protocols and benefits sign-up is necessary: a plan that considers company culture, history, team dynamics...even quality of life differences if the new leader is coming from out of town!

Brenda Hampel and Erika Lamont of Connect the Dots share tips, tricks, and outright wisdom from years of experience helping organizations maximize the success of their new leaders.

Here's what Brenda, Erika, and host Maureen Metcalf cover:

  1. The three main components of a good onboarding plan;
  1. Why overlooking help with personal transitions – including spouse and children – is a key reason for new leaders leaving your organization; and
  1. Why how you handled your workforce during the COVID pandemic is the ultimate litmus test for a leader considering your job offer.

S9-Ep11: Top Leadership Lessons for Women from a Senior White House Advisor15 Mar 202300:48:41

Guest: Betsy Myers, former Senior White House Advisor

We may gripe about the pandemic, but it gave us one very positive change for women in the workplace: flexibility. It also highlighted for everyone that old-school leadership won’t cut it anymore. Betsy Myers says head and heart leadership is the model for today’s leaders. It fuses data-driven strategies and decisiveness with qualities such as warmth, compassion, empathy, and collaboration. In short, the head sets the purpose for an organization, but the heart engages your people to follow and bring their best selves to the team.  Here's what Betsy covers with host Maureen Metcalf:

  1. Change is inevitable…so successful leaders embrace it;
  2. The impacts of holding on to an old-school leadership style (and why it’s the #1 cause of leadership failure!); and
  3. What Head-and-Heart Leadership really means.

S10-Ep25: Why Amazon Web Services’ VP Uses AI to Put People First25 Jun 202400:34:20

Guest: Dave Levy, Vice President of Amazon Web Services (AWS) Worldwide Public Sector (WWPS)

AI is all the buzz — but how do you lead your team through all the noise to find what works for you?

Dave Levy clears the noise in this episode. By helping governments discern the best AI tools to serve their communities, he sees the qualities any leader needs to look for…and security is right at the top of the list. So is education, including growing the talent pool to meet demand!

Here's what Dave and Maureen cover:

  1. Why “inventing” your own AI apps can be better in the long run than using a popular off-the-shelf system;
  2. Why Amazon is willing to invest heavily in free AI and IT training and education programs for the public; and
  3. The importance of having at least one leader on your board or in your C-suite who knows enough to safely spearhead your AI (and tech) efforts.

S9-Ep10: Groundbreaking Solutions in Healthcare from Mass General Brigham’s CEO07 Mar 202300:59:18

Guest: Anne Klibanski

Healthcare begins and ends in the home. At least, it should: you’re more likely to heal a bit faster and your outlook tends to be brighter at home instead of a hospital. Further, COVID revealed and amplified medical staff burnout and other issues already brewing in our healthcare system.

It’s overwhelming for most healthcare leaders, but our guest – Dr. Anne Klibanski – tackles these issues head-on. The president and CEO of Mass General Brigham, she and her team created, and continue to develop, groundbreaking solutions for their hospitals...and, more importantly, their patients. In this episode, Anne shares those solutions and the challenges they present for leaders with host Maureen Metcalf.

Here's what Anne and Maureen cover:

  1. The lack of patient beds and other resources COVID made clear (but remain today);
  1. What healthcare leaders can do to resolve those issues; and
  1. Why the old status quo for American healthcare won’t work anymore, along with the newer, better methods Mass General Brigham is creating and using.

S9-Ep8: In Your Power22 Feb 202300:49:53

Guest: Sharon Melnick

Pushy. Manipulative. Lofty.

We have a lot of negative views for powerful leaders – but that’s not what real power is about. When a leader is in their power, they raise everyone around them. It’s the difference between simply having power, and being IN your power.

With her latest book, In Your Power, Sharon Melnick explores the ways women leaders, in particular, both grow and leak their power. She discusses those, as well as how turning down an invitation to the White House led to her epiphany about giving away your personal power, in this episode.

Here's what Sharon and Maureen cover:

  • How and why we can redefine power as a force for good;
  • The three ways in which we’re not in our power; and
  • How burnout results not just from overwork, but from being underpowered, too.

About Our Guest:

Between ever changing work practices, and the elusive act of fulfilling personal and professional demands, leaders are having to navigate a new world of challenges and strike the right tone of balancing completion with compassion. Dr. Sharon Melnick introduces the idea that power is the underlying issue in many of the trends we see among employees, and that leaders who use their power for the good of all can create team members who are loyal, inspired, and accountable.  What Dr. Melnick sees from having coached and trained over 40,000 professionals is that leaders already have so much more power than they realize or are using.

As a Marshall Goldsmith Top 100 Coach, Sharon combines proven leadership best practices with behavior change methods she developed through 10 years of psychology research at Harvard Medical School. Sharon has spoken at over 200 retreats and leadership conferences around the world (as well as presenting at the White House, the United Nations, and at West Point). She hosts the popular podcast, The Power Shift.

S9-Ep7: Epic! The Women’s Power Playbook15 Feb 202300:48:40

Guest: Carolyn Buck Luce

Live an epic life.

That’s the goal Carolyn Buck Luce advises you to have. In this episode, she shares ways to make that happen…and how that path started for her. Eight year old Carolyn Buck Luce was inspired by John F. Kennedy's call to service, and decided to take responsibility for answering it even though she was only in elementary school. She created her first Decade Game, a plan for the next ten years of her life. Despite the pre-internet turmoil of the 1960s, she was determined to follow her purpose and make a difference in the world. She used the Decade Game to understand the power of leadership and the importance of courage, vulnerability, and trust. And, critically, she observed that women give away much of their power – not just in the board room, but beginning as children in primary school.

That served to motivate her even more. Carolyn continues her mission, and still uses her Decade Game in her journey to becoming an organizational shaman inspiring humans to live epic lives.

Here's what Carolyn and Maureen cover:

  1. What, exactly, the Decade Game is – and how to play it;
  2. Why truly courageous leaders use their power for good; and
  3. The importance of having purpose.

S6-Ep3: Rebalancing Society - Radical Renewal Beyond Left, Right, or Center03 Feb 202300:45:11

Guest: Henry Mintzberg

There’s a lot of chaos for leaders to deal with, and it’s been pushing us out of balance for decades. Henry Mintzberg has had enough. Enough of the imbalance that is destroying our democracies, our planet, and ourselves. Enough of the pendulum politics of left and right, as well as the leadership paralysis in the political center. The world we live in needs a form of radical renewal unprecedented in the human experience.

But Henry doesn’t complain: he crafts solutions. In this episode, he presents host Maureen Metcalf with an integrative framework for a comprehensive way forward. It’s based on his book, Rebalancing Society: Radical Renewal, Beyond Left, Right and Center.

Here's what Henry and Maureen cover:

  • Why the internal threats to democracies and our individual self-denigrations are tied to the same root cause;
  • How imbalance wreaks havoc on our lives and leadership; and
  • What can be done to restore balance and our cultural sanity .

S9-Ep4: Intentional Leadership in a New Work World25 Jan 202300:55:57

Guest: Monique Jefferson

Are you a hybrid leader yet?

That’s what today’s work world demands. Most workers prefer work from home. Others prefer to be in the office. Still others like hybrid work: a combination of both. In this episode in our Connex Partners Executive Insights series, we ask—How do you lead people with such opposing preferences? And how do you accommodate the breadth of diversity in the workforce?

Monique Jefferson says the answer lies in being intentional. The Chief People Officer of NYC’s Community Preservation Corporation successfully guides her leaders into intentionality and inclusivity. Done well, your team will have purpose, passion, and perspective…all of which lead to greater morale and loyalty. She shares her methods with host Maureen Metcalf.

Here's what Monique and Maureen cover:

  • The path to being an intentional leader in today’s hybrid work environment;
  • Why flexibility ranks higher than compensation in importance to today’s workers; and
  • The Three Ps, and their importance to your team…and you .

S7-Ep31: Leading in Emerging Industries22 Jan 202300:48:34

Guest: James Brenza

By their very nature, emerging industries (such as EVs, private spaceships, and cannabis) present unique leadership challenges – and opportunities – rarely encountered in long-established businesses.  In addition to general entrepreneurism, you’re creating something new for the marketplace…and forging the team to shepherd it.

Emerging industries often lend a new twist on old businesses: they allow the opportunity to relook at established practices, sparking innovation in the business sector. James Brenza joins the show to discuss his venture into an emerging industry -- and how that provided him with new challenges as well as the possibilities of new solutions.

Here's what James and Maureen cover:

  • How disruptions in your personal life can spark your drive into new kinds of business;
  • Ways to navigate the uncertainty of cutting-edge industries when legislation isn’t consistent across the country; and
  • Why standards and technology remain vital components in emerging industries.

S7-Ep43: Staying Cool in Challenging Situations (Recognizing & Managing Your Stress Triggers)21 Jan 202300:48:24

Guest: Janet Fouts

We recognize the many layers of stress we are under day-to-day. Those stresses are very real – and often increase as we move up the leadership ladder. That stress has consequences, both physical and mental. What can we do?

Janet Fouts has distilled some very simple tools that can help us be less reactive and more responsive to what life throws at us. They’re based on her deep dive into mindfulness as she dealt with the extreme stress of working as a full time digital marketer while caring for a dying partner. In the process, she learned that when we are aware of ourselves, we have better opportunities to understand others, making us better leaders, communicators, and partners.

Here's what Janet and Maureen cover:

  • How to recognize, and deal with, the triggers that can set you off;
  • Ways to learn mindfulness in easy microsteps; and
  • Why work meetings cause so much stress (and why Americans do meetings so poorly).

S7-Ep2: The Future Leader - Skills & Mindsets to Succeed in the Next Decade20 Jan 202300:42:54

Guest: Jacob Morgan

There has been a lot written about leadership for the present day, but the world is changing quickly. What worked in the past won’t work in the future – so how do we prepare leaders who can successfully navigate and guide us through the next decade and beyond?

What’s required of leaders, even the types of leaders we need, is in flux. So what can a struggling leader do now?

Jacob Morgan wondered, as well, so he interviewed over 140 CEOs, then partnered with LinkedIn to survey almost 14,000 of their members around the globe to see how those CEO insights aligned with employee perspectives. He uncovered some fascinating insights, and shares them in this episode.

Here's what Jacob and Maureen cover:

  • The undeniable reality that pre-pandemic leadership isn’t going to cut it in this post-pandemic decade;
  • Why these changes are happening; and
  • The four mindsets and five behaviors to develop as a leader for tomorrow.

S9-Ep3: Courageous Followership18 Jan 202300:43:44

Guests: Neil Grunberg & Ira Chaleff

“He who cannot be a good follower, cannot be a good leader.”

Aristotle shared that wisdom over 2,000 years ago, but today we chafe at being labeled a follower. Yet, as Ira Chaleff and Neil Grunberg point out, if no one is following, then no one can be leading, either!

Followership is critical in any organization. Think of followership and leadership as a yin and yang: each of us needs to be good at both of them, and each of us needs to know when to play which role.  It all depends on the context. Most critically, be a courageous follower: one with the values and integrity to let your leader know when things are amiss. Enron is a classic warning about what happens when an organization doesn’t have courageous followers!

Here's what Ira, Neil, and Maureen cover:

  • The importance of standing up to and for your leader (even at the same time);
  • How strict hierarchies distort the flow between follower and leader, slowing down the organization; and
  • Why a lack of courageous followership leads to catastrophes at work (such as Enron) and in our personal lives (such as Uvalde and other mass tragedies).

S8-Ep4: Building Communities within Your Business17 Jan 202300:55:55

Guest: Alice Yoo LeClair

Contrary to old-school management beliefs, having a work-best-friend boosts productivity.  Having an entire work community?  That boosts a lot of people’s productivity, morale, even longevity with the organization.  Best of all, the communities you foster at work don’t need to be work-related to have these effects:  gamers, Trekkies, and football fanatics in your workplace all benefit. So how does an HR leader drive community building within their organization?  Does remote work make it more difficult? How does it fit with the CHRO’s other responsibilities?  And how do you focus on this when managers so often dump their personnel responsibilities on the HR department instead of taking their own leadership reins? Alice Yoo LeClair knows the world of Human Resources well, with experience in organizations of all sizes.  With her deep experience and eyes on the future, she shares her wisdom and observations with host Maureen Metcalf.

This is the first of several episodes which view innovative leadership from the perspective of the CHRO and other human resources leaders:  the Connex Executive Insights Series.

Here's what Alice and Maureen cover:

  • What a community is, and why having work communities is so important for your team;
  • How workplace communities benefit the broader business; and
  • Why Gallup research shows that having good friends at work substantially boosts productivity.

We all have bias. In various forms, it’s built into our brains. But implicit bias creates a disadvantage for leaders and their organizations. Dr. Rebecca Heiss has studied bias extensively, and shares what implicit bias is and how it impacts each of us. As leaders, we need to understand and manage implicit biases because they impact our hiring choices, promotion and succession decisions, company policies—even how closely we pay attention to someone in a presentation. To truly ensure we hire and retain top talent, we need to remove bias from our decision making process as much as possible. During this show, Rebecca shares her research…and what it reveals about the ways we can beat the bias in our business, and our lives.

Here's what Rebecca and Maureen cover:

  • What, exactly, implicit bias is – and how it taints your decision-making without you realizing;
  • How implicit bias goes beyond major strokes like race and religion, such as the seemingly subtle bias of “Blondes have more fun” which has deep effects in the workplace; and
  • The ways bias actually impedes how efficiently (and profitably) your company is achieving its goals.

S8-Ep8: Hiring in the Great Resignation - Developing Your Culture, Communications, & Pipeline in a Crisis14 Jan 202300:56:41

Guest: Michelle Sanchez-Bickley

Amidst the Great Resignation, exceptional organizations are still retaining their top employees, and recruiting new staff.  Renown Health is one of them.

In the second of our Connex Executive Insights series, Michelle Sanchez-Bickley of Renown Health joins Maureen Metcalf to discuss the challenges of the Great Resignation for HR departments.  It’s particularly challenging in the health care sector; the strains of COVID on our medical system put particular pressure on doctors, nurses, and hospital support staff.  That’s led to 30% or more turnover.

Using a combination of developing internal culture, open communications, hybrid and remote working, and a modern innovation on apprenticeship, Renown Health is a bright spot emerging above the crisis.

Here's what Michelle and Maureen cover:

  • Why taking a hard look at your company culture is key to losing staff;
  • How Michelle maintained a hiring pipeline even though COVID hit the healthcare industry so hard; and
  • Why you lose good employees when they don’t see a path for growth, development, or simply learning.

S8-Ep10: ShEquity - A Refugee’s Path to Empowering Women & Their Businesses13 Jan 202300:50:58

Guest: Pauline Koelbl

Surviving life as a refugee is one thing.  To turn that life into a mission to empower other women is quite another.

That’s exactly what Pauline Koelbl did.  Escaping the war in Rwanda, she found herself a homeless refugee.  Eventually, Pauline found a home in Tucson, Arizona.  More importantly, she found mentoring and support there – and now “pays it forward” as the founder and managing director of ShEquity, and investment firm providing capital and other resources to women-led and -owned businesses in Africa.  Women are the key to unlocking economic success on the continent; they operate over 40% of small and medium sized enterprises.  What’s more, they reinvest about 90% of their revenue in sectors and activities that benefit their families and communities – men only reinvest 40%.  That’s one of many reasons the McKinsey Global Institute estimates the global GDP would increase by $28 trillion if we simply closed the business gender gap!

Pauline shares her compelling story of refugee-turned-entrepreneur focused on female empowerment with host Maureen Metcalf.

Here's what Pauline and Maureen cover:

  • How closing the gender gap in the workforce potentially adds $28 trillion to the global GDP;
  • Why, despite the stereotypes, refugees bring with them vast amounts of intellectual capital host countries tend to waste; and
  • Why women are the key to African (and other) nations fully realizing their economic potential.

S8-Ep11: Workforce Demographics & an Inclusive Culture10 Jan 202300:51:59

Guests: Nadia Younes, Gamiel Yafai, & Louise Carvalho

Slow as molasses.  That’s one way to describe how leaders have responded to the rapidly changing workplace.  The work environment was already changing before the COVID pandemic; now, there’s no going back to the old “industrial” model.  It doesn’t meet rapidly evolving employee expectations nor the major shifts in workforce demographics.  That, in turn, means the Great Resignation should have come as no surprise at all!

The new, effective workplace models all embrace DEI: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.  Inclusive business cultures hold many advantages for staff, leaders, and profitability.  From morale to a broader pool of leaders, the benefits are impactful.

How does it work?  Nadia Younes, Louise Carvalho, and Gamiel Yafai use CERN, Europe’s particle physics research center, as a launching point to explore inclusiveness with host Maureen Metcalf.

Here's what Nadia, Gamiel, & Louise cover:

  • While Gen Z gets all the press, leaders must learn how to juggle the wants and needs of five different generations overlapping in the same workplace;
  • Why – despite the old-school wishes of CEOs like Tim Cook, Bob Iger, and Elon Musk – workers and the workplace have changed forever; and
  • With the decline in church attendance and other traditional social arenas, how the workplace has become most people’s place of “community.”

S8-Ep12: Power, Charisma, Hormones: Science Studies Leadership09 Jan 202300:55:42

Guest: John Antonakis

Power does tend to corrupt.  Especially the more testosterone is added to the mix.

That’s just one finding that the scientific study of leadership has revealed.  Yet, despite the legions of leadership consultants plying their theories, very little research in the field has been conducted with scientific rigor.  Even science basics, such as control groups and identifying variables, are missing.  That punches big holes in many leading leadership philosophies and best-selling books; they look at what top-performing companies have in common…but don’t check to see if the worst performing companies have those same things in common, too!

Enter John Antonakis.  A professor of organizational behavior, and the editor-in-chief of The Leadership Quarterly, John applies the scientific model to studies of leadership qualities, with a particular interest in charisma.  He’ll talk about power, hormones, and his AI charismometer in this episode.

Here's what John and Maureen cover:

  • Why the lack of truly scientific studies of leadership makes it difficult to tease out what really forges a good (even great) leader;
  • How testosterone in a leader increases their likelihood of corruption; and
  • That most traits of truly great leaders can be learned – you don’t have to be born with them!

S10-Ep24: Randstad’s CEO Reveals Recruiting’s Realities in a Tough Talent Market11 Jun 202400:30:50

Guest: Sander van ‘t Noordende, CEO, Randstad

The world is becoming talent-led. The talent pool is shrinking, which means leaders must radically shift their thinking on how to recruit — and retain — top performers.

Fortunately, Sander van ‘t Noordende sees a number of solid solutions arising from his vantage as CEO of multinational HR firm Ranstad. He shares them with host Maureen Metcalf in this episode.

Here's what Sander and Maureen cover:

  1. The Big Three issues nearly all corporations and governments will soon be facing (if they aren’t already);
  2. Who the Assertive Third are in your team, and how quickly your competitors might scoop them up; and
  3. Why DEI bashing, though politically popular, is a red flag to top talent.

S8-Ep13: How HR Drives New Beginnings08 Jan 202300:55:11

Guest: Fara Palumbo

Change is probably the biggest single consequence of the pandemic on organizations in every sector and of every size.  Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina not only weathered that change, but thrived – even winning awards. Their Chief People Officer, Fara Palumbo, talks with host Maureen Metcalf about the positive opportunities the pandemic presented to her HR department in launching initiatives – and making Blue Cross/Blue Shield an even better place to work.  They discuss change, transformation, and how HR acts as the primary driver for those shifts.

This interview is part of the Connex Executive Insights Series.

Here's what Fara and Maureen reveal:

  1. How remote work has so many advantages for both the worker and the organization;
  2. Why it can be outright foolish to return to the inefficiencies of full on-site work; and
  3. Changing your focus from work-life balance to work-life flexibility.

S8-Ep14: Getting Lost in the Language of Leadership07 Jan 202300:56:49

Guest: Jonathan Reams

Leadership is nothing without thought -- and research shows we (literally!) think with our hearts as well as our minds.  Neurocardiology is just one way we're learning about how a good leader thinks.  The development of more robust thinking skills is vital in growing as a leader.  Jonathan Reams, of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, discusses the mindsets required for leaders to be effective.

Here's what Jonathan and Maureen cover:

  1. What the science of neurocardiology shows about how a leaders’ emotions physically affect their teams;
  2. How the fall of Superman and rise of The Avengers in popular culture reflects the change in leadership the real world needs; and
  3. The thinking tools we need in a knowledge economy.

S8-Ep17: Cultivating Empathy through Authenticity06 Jan 202300:54:22

Guest: Jason Lioy

Authenticity boils down to one key concept: be yourself.  That concept is critical at Dawn Foods; their passion is their people, and their goal is to create a psychologically safe environment for people to bring their whole selves to work.  In short, every Dawn employee can truly “be yourself.”

Making the workplace a safe space took a lot of effort, but Dawn succeeded.  The Great Resignation barely touched the company; taking DEI, empathy, and authenticity to a whole new level has driven both retention and core business strategy.  Their I Am staff campaign and Women in Leadership program are just two successful facets of Dawn’s belief in people.  Dawn’s Chief People Officer – Jason Lioy – joins host Maureen Metcalf to discuss the motivation and implementation of this unique and inspiring drive to help each person achieve their potential.

Here's what you’ll learn from Jason & Maureen:

  • Pre-pandemic, companies viewed their staff as resources or assets (things), but successful companies today view them as people first;
  • Why people respond better to (and are more productive with) authentic leaders; and
  • How respect for diversity boosts the bottom line.

S8-Ep21: Achieving Employee-Centric Leadership - A Leader’s Food for Thought05 Jan 202300:54:10

Guest: Heather Krentler

Employees want to be heard. They want to know their employer wants the best for them. Continental Services heard – and worked hard to innovate their company culture to fully focus on the employee journey.  Heather Krentler, Continental’s chief administrative officer, joins host Maureen Metcalf to explore Continental’s employee-led culture and how it came to be; the changes made not just to engagement, but sourcing the best talent in the first place; and how leaders embraced the new employee-centric culture.  The results have been remarkable: a happy staff really does lead to a pleasant bottom line!

Here's what Heather and Maureen cover:

  • How part of the Great Resignation and Quiet Quitting stem from people – your staff – asserting more control over their lives;
  • Why compensation doesn’t cut it as the only benefit to retain a valuable employee; and
  • Why the best ideas tend to come from the front line, not the back office.

S8-Ep23: How to Harness Honesty03 Jan 202300:57:08

Peter Kozodoy was peeved at the number of lying, dishonest managers, CEOs, and other leaders he had to contend with.  So he analyzed honesty…and found that honest leaders not only do better, but their teams function better, too.  Peter discusses:

  • How to use strategic brutal honesty to improve far more than morale: it improves sales, marketing, recruiting, and so much more;
  • The simple 2-question technique that teaches us how to shake off self-limiting talk that prevents us from success; and
  • How to use honesty like a Jedi mind-trick to spark creativity, resolve interpersonal conflicts, and become a more effective and empowered leader.

Peter’s book is Honest to Greatness.

S8-Ep33: Growing a Powerhouse City - Leading Together02 Jan 202300:53:38

Guest: Kenny McDonald

It takes a village to raise a city.  That twists traditional wisdom, but it’s true: no one leader can improve an urban landscape alone.  It takes a group of leaders in public and private partnership. When they’re united by one vision, their city can grow into a powerhouse.  Kenny McDonald oversees that for Columbus, Ohio – a city that’s launched into a bold future…most recently, as the site for Intel’s newest, largest chip plant.  As president of the Columbus Partnership, McDonald upholds and advances the shared vision of the city’s CEOs.  In this episode, he shares how that works so effectively – and what other urban leaders can learn from the Partnership’s example.

S8-Ep38: The Power of Passion & Perseverance - Four Levels of Grit01 Jan 202300:55:39

Guest: Jim Ritchie-Dunham

There’s more to grit than determination – a whole lot more.  Knowing that can help you harness this incredible power of passion and perseverance.

Building on the work of Angela Duckworth and her seminal book, guest Jim Ritchie-Dunham shows how there are four levels of grit in an organization...an insight which dovetails neatly with his own work in ecosynomics.  Leaders often unknowingly determine how it cascades through various parts of their business – but because they’re not aware of it, they may be reinforcing the wrong kind for a particular department, team, or employee.  That results in inefficiencies, lower staff engagement, and the loss of talent.  But all of that can be boosted when grit is recognized and deftly applied.  Dig in to a deeper understanding of grit with Jim Ritchie-Dunham and host Maureen Metcalf!

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  1. The four lenses for viewing and identifying the grit in your team, and throughout your organization
  2. The unstated social agreements you have with every single person you work with, and
  3. How the best leaders see grit in their teams.

S8-Ep41: What Your Team REALLY Thinks...in Real Time!31 Dec 202200:59:27

Guest: Greg Moran

"Good afternoon, staff. I'm listening."

If only your boss truly listened, like Frasier Crane! The reality is most folks high up the chain have little clue about what the front line -- and the customers the front line interacts with -- are thinking. As the staff at one major company said, "They're not even listening to us."

The solution is easy. Slack, Teams, and other chat channels have replaced the watercooler as your company's own internal social media. Listening to those conversations reveals a wealth of information...and solutions to boost your team's and customers' experiences. As an example, guest Greg Moran discusses the basics of how Aware's AI system finds trending topics without intruding on privacy.

In this episode, you’ll learn: 1. There's a big difference between monitoring employees and listening to them

2. How listening -- directly and via AI -- gives people a voice in the head office; a voice not filtered by management, and 3. How to maintain individuals' privacy while keeping a finger on the pulse of your team.

S8-Ep52: Do No Harm: Ethics for Leaders21 Dec 202200:56:21

Guest: Terri O'Fallon

Few leaders set out to harm others – but it can happen despite our best intentions. The key is to look outward from our decisions to all the ripple effects they generate.

And the best way to look outward is to look inward!

It’s hardly a secret that our emotions affect our cognition. Our guest, Terri O’Fallon, founder of Stages International, reveals in this episode that identifying and naming our emotions helps us become better leaders, and increases our sense of well-being. With host Maureen Metcalf, Terri delves into the concept of 'developmental ethics' to challenge leaders to embrace their emotions, actively seek out potential harm, and practice adaptability for the greater good with generous spirit.

Here's what Terri and Maureen cover:

  1. How do emotions influence leadership and how can leaders ensure they are doing no harm?
  2. What are the benefits of recognizing and labeling emotions, both positive and negative?
  3. How can leaders cultivate generosity of heart when faced with competitive situations?

S8-Ep50: Encore Facing Uncertainty: It’s VUCA20 Dec 202200:55:53

Featured Guest: Chris Nolan

One look at the headlines on any given day makes it clear: the world is UNclear. How can an organization navigate through the volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity to survive – much less succeed? By understanding VUCA, a concept developed by the Pentagon in 1987 to give our military an edge in chaos. Filmmaker Chris Nolan joins Maureen Metcalf to share how this military technique directly applies to businesses and non-profits – information drawn from his new documentary and book: It’s VUCA!.

S7-Ep5: Democracy: Are We a Brittle Twig or Supple Bamboo?20 Dec 202200:44:16

Featured Guest: Matt Qvortrup

As a political scientist, Matt studies democracy – its evolution, and particularly how democracies decline.  He shares his perspective on the rise of populism across the world, how that leads to un-democratic leaders, then answers the question, “Is American democracy a brittle twig or a supple bamboo?”  He offers solutions, too; every strong democracy in history thrived on disparate points of view – and leaders who welcomed diverse opinions.
