Ep.153 - Confronting Criticism: 2 Questions Every Author Should Ask Themselves23 Jan 202600:19:35

Whether we ask for it or not, every author receives feedback and often, it's in the form of criticism.

Ep.152 - Have I written enough? Too much? How to know when your manuscript is complete15 Jan 202600:14:09

As I've mentioned before, there are no cookie-cutter solutions for authors.

However, there are general rules of thumb and best practices you can use to determine when your manuscript is complete.

I'm going to share 3 of those best practices with you today!

How to Create an Opt-in Offer (for Nonfiction Writers)05 May 202300:12:13

It's Personal History Awareness Month!

This fact led me to update my opt-in offer for individuals wanting to write their life stories, which in turn made me think that maybe I should do a podcast episode on how to create an opt-in offer. And here we are!

Note that this episode differs from Episode 12 (How to Create and Distribute a Reader Magnet) in that this one is specifically for nonfiction writers. Episode 12 was all about how to create and distribute a short story. Trust me. They are done in completely different ways.

Listen in as I share the 5 steps to creating and distributing a nonfiction opt-in offer.

You're not just busy juggling all things business - you also have family responsibilities, church commitments, and personal goals you're trying to reach.

It's a lot. But it doesn't mean you have to give up on your dream of becoming an author.

Hey there, Pen Pusher. Welcome back!

I also want to invite you to join the Inkwell Collective.

It's a community that God has been knitting together into a vibrant, incredibly supportive collection of Christian writers from around the world.

Overcoming Fear as a Writer with Jenn Hand (Ep.40)06 Apr 202300:25:49

On today's episode of the Ink and Impact Podcast, I speak with author Jennifer Hand, whose most recent book is My Yes Is On the Table

We specifically talk about what it was like for her to say yes to writing a book and the different things that she experienced through her author journey that many of us as fellow writers can relate to. I think that you'll be encouraged by all that she has to share:

  • What God told her to say when people kept asking her how many books she's sold (hint: it's not about an actual number!)
  • What she did when she got rejection letter after rejection letter
  • How God's plan for your book isn't limited to just one activity
  • and much more!

We discuss all of the not-so-fun things like fear and sacrifice, but throughout it all, she brings it back to saying yes to God and putting your yes on the table to the message He has placed on your heart.

AI for Writers: The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly (Ep.39)31 Mar 202300:28:37

In today's episode, I discuss AI for writers and how it's affecting the publishing industry.

I wanted to really dig into this because while everyone else seems to be so excited about it and diving into it and touting all the benefits, I have a little hesitation about it.

Not that I don't think that it should be used, but that we should be aware of how to properly use it and be aware of its limitations as well.

So today I'm sharing six different downsides to AI and what we can do about them.

What Is Your Vision & Mission as an Author? (Ep.37)16 Mar 202300:15:55

Today I discuss the foundation of our writing efforts. Without a vision and mission, the author life is much more difficult, and dare I say less fruitful.

You might be thinking that a vision and mission statement are only for businesses. But guess what?

Your writing is a business! If you plan to sell your book and earn money from it, you need to treat your writing as a business.

Even if you plan to give away all of your work for free, it’s still a ministry. And if you ask any non-profit organization out there, they’ll quickly tell you that they operate by a vision and mission statement, too.

They’re the pieces that keep businesses, ministries, and entrepreneurs (which includes us authors) focused, grounded, and unified.

Let’s dive in!

Book Cover and Interior Design Considerations (Ep.33)16 Feb 202300:30:43

Since we celebrated Valentine’s Day earlier this week, I thought I’d play off of that theme and ask you:  Are you in love with your book’s appearance?

Even more importantly, do you know how to ensure that your target audience will fall in love with your cover and interior design?

The most important marketing aspect of your book – whether ebook or print - is its cover.

We’ve worked long and hard to write a quality book – let’s not overlook interior design that enhances the content and a quality cover that entices potential buyers to pull it off the shelf in the first place!

So on today’s episode, we’re going to talk about:

·         why every author needs to know how to ensure quality design (yes, even traditionally published authors),

·         working with a professional designer, and

·         cover design options to fit your needs.

Publishing & Platform Pitfalls (Ep.32)09 Feb 202300:16:39

Writers know they need to build a platform. But what is an author platform and why does it really matter? How do you even start to build a platform?

Writing a book is much more than simply putting words on a page. In today's episode, Dalene Bickel discusses how platform and publishing go hand in hand and shares ways writers can begin to grow their platform while staying true to their calling.

She also highlights three current writing contests for aspiring authors seeking traditional publishing.

How to Create a Book: 5 Critical Components (Ep.31)02 Feb 202300:22:52

I'm kicking off Season 2 with a giveaway (free book, anyone?!) and practical advice to help you wrap your mind around the book creation process.

Whether you’re planning to indie or traditionally publish, these 5 components are critical across the board. So be sure to stick around to the very end for full giveaway details and prepare to make an impact with your book!

******

I’ve been reminded of two things recently while working with my private book coaching clients:

  1. aspiring authors often don’t understand the publishing process (time, costs, and work required) and
  2. most aspiring authors don’t know how or where to find trustworthy advice and service providers.

Thus, while the mission of this podcast remains the same as last season - to educate, encourage, and embolden God’s writers - I’m going to provide even more practical tips with you about the writing, publishing, and marketing processes - starting today.

How to Create a Book: 5 Critical Components

Yay! You’ve completed your manuscript! That’s a huge accomplishment. But how do you turn that Word or Google doc into a print or ebook? Internet searches reveal so much information, it’s overwhelming.

There are many decisions to be made along the way, but I believe it’s important to always keep these two overarching non-negotiables in mind:

  1. Represent the Lord well by creating a quality book (in both content and packaging), and
  2. Serve your readers well (in both content and packaging).

Regardless of budget or time constraints, all your decisions should be made with these two goals in mind.

Colossians 3:23-24 (ESV) - “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.”

Alright, let’s dive into the particulars. Here are 5 critical components that every book should include:

  1. Quality Cover
  2. Front Matter
  3. Well-written and edited text
  4. Back Matter
  5. Designed and Formatted interior

Hopefully you found this information helpful. Ep.26 - How Thanksgiving Proclamations and A Season for Holiness Apply to Your Writing24 Nov 202200:07:38

If you’re listening from the U.S. on the day this episode airs, you’re probably trying to get comfortable after stuffing yourself with turkey and all the other accompanying gastronomical goodies of a typical Thanksgiving feast.

While I was prepping for my own family’s feast this week, I listened to a podcast that shared a portion of George Washington’s Thanksgiving Proclamation of 1789. The history buff in me found it intriguing, so I dug a little deeper and discovered he wasn't the only president to offer a Thanksgiving proclamation to the citizens of the United States.

Listen in as I share more about these proclamations and, believe it or not, how they relate to your writing life today.

I also share A Season for Holiness with you - don't miss this incredible opportunity to reflect on and reconnect with God in a way that will positively impact your writing.
