Ep 63 - Deep Work, Rest and Play with Alicia Navarro05 Sep 202100:58:52

This week, I’m joined by Alicia Navarro from FLOWN, a start-up who have created a deep work toolkit and deep work spaces that help knowledge workers get significant work done - and take joy in the journey.

Deep work is focused, uninterrupted time where you’re working on something challenging or significant and allows opportunity for creativity, problem solving and a real sense of purpose.

Unfortunately, it’s not the norm in most corporate workplaces and FLOWN wants to improve that.

Alicia and I discuss:

  • What deep work looks like and the factors needed to create it
  • How you can distraction proof your working time
  • The importance of play for creativity and problem solving
  • Nurturing feminine energy in a predominantly masculine world of work
  • How FLOWN is reimagining how we work and their free daily sessions you can join

After listening to this episode, I encourage you to review your normal working day. Is it dictated by emails, meetings and lacking creative thinking space? How can you create more deep work and play time for you and your team?

MORE ABOUT ALICIA

Alicia Navarro is a serial tech entrepreneur, with a passion for product, brand, design and culture.

She is the founder and CEO of a new startup, FLOWN, creating ‘deep work’ spaces for knowledge workers. Frustrated by how hard it was to find the physical and mental spaces conducive to productive and creative thinking, Alicia began Flown to offer a curated network of deep work-enabled home and hotels accompanied by a set of online tools and resources to enable accountability, focus and creativity.

As you develop your career and become more senior, there’s a good chance that you’ll move from being a specialist to a generalist.

Ep 58 - The Challenges we Face as Women in the Workplace01 Aug 202100:42:31

As a coach for women leaders, I focus on how as women we can take control of our careers.

But I’ve never addressed on the podcast why we even need women’s leadership coaches and women’s leadership programmes.

The playing field that women operate on in the workplace is shockingly unlevel. It’s time to acknowledge that and collectively take steps to change it.

I discuss:

  • The dynamics of the current working environment and how it wasn’t designed with women in mind
  • The true extent of the disadvantages we face from pay to promotions to behaviour
  • What sponsorship is and how women can proactively support each other
  • Ways we can improve the working environment, embrace our personal strengths and step into the space we deserve

Ep 56 - How to Stop Overthinking11 Jul 202100:55:18

Are you an overthinker? Perhaps you ruminate on past situations, worry about future events or are fearful of the judgement of others?

Overthinking can affect both our work and personal lives as well as how we show up with confidence as a leader. Our thoughts also directly impact the levels of daily stress we experience and how quickly we can recover from it.

In reality, our minds are natural overthinkers if we let them be. Tahirih McLaren-Brown is helping people to take control and be the boss of their brain through mindfulness and meditation.

We discussed:

  • What mindfulness is and how it can benefit you
  • How you can have more awareness and control of your thoughts and emotions
  • What you can do if you’re feeling worried or anxious about returning to the office
  • Ways you can handle uncertainty and even embrace it
  • A quick mindfulness exercise you can do anywhere to instantly ease your stress

If you’d like to learn the Four Step Pause that Tahirih shared and get access to seven days of guided meditations for overthinkers, you can find those at her website: https://www.tahirih.co/f/mindfulness-kit

Ep 55 – Menopause in the Workplace04 Jul 202101:02:45

Menopause is something that all women will experience in their life however it’s not something that’s well understood or openly spoken about. The symptoms of menopause will almost certainly affect how you work but it’s often seen to be a taboo subject which leaves women struggling in silence.

In this week’s episode I interview Deborah Garlick from Henpicked Menopause who’s on a mission to ensure women are supported throughout menopause through awareness, education and workplace training.

We discuss:

  • What menopause is, how it can affect you and our personal experiences
  • Deborah’s advice for getting the help you need from your GP
  • How you can talk about menopause at work and how it’s impacting you
  • Ways that leaders can support colleagues that are going through menopause
  • What organisations can do to be more aware, supportive and menopause friendly

Throughout the interview, Deborah provided fantastic, practical tips for both individuals, leaders and organisations that will help to make a real difference for perimenopausal and menopausal women at work.

Many of the questions on this podcast were inspired by discussions with my LinkedIn connections. I’ll be continuing the conversation on my LinkedIn profile and invite you to connect with me there: https://www.linkedin.com/in/carlamiller1/

Ep 54 - How to worry less about work27 Jun 202100:23:51

Many managers and leaders that I work with mention anxiety as one of the things they struggle with, both personally and in the workplace.

This week, I’m bringing back one of my most popular podcast episodes about how we can tackle these feelings of anxiety and be calmer and more confident at work.

 In this episode I share:

  • My experience with anxiety throughout my life
  • My thoughts on where it comes from and what we can do about it
  • A powerful approach that I’ve used to end my anxiety for good
  • A guided meditation that you can use whenever you feel anxious

Although many of us experience anxiety, it’s not something that needs to rule your daily life or affect your leadership in the workplace.

I hope you enjoy the meditation and please come back to it as a tool when you need it.

Ep 52 Are you on the brink of burnout? 13 Jun 202100:34:51

“There are two types of people. Those who are burnt out, and those who are in denial about being burnt out” - Greg McKeown

Burnout is on the rise and I’ve noticed, particularly since the pandemic began, that more and more people are on the path to burnout. With increased responsibilities and stress coupled with often unrealistic expectations, and the boundaries between work and life having completely disappeared, it’s easy to see why.

In this week's episode, I’m helping you to recognise your own signs of burnout and what you can do about it.

I share:

Where burnout comes from and what causes it

What the different stages of burnout are

The types of behaviour that lead to burnout and how you can recognise your warning signs

My personal story of burnout and how I now prioritise my wellbeing

After listening to this episode, I encourage you to pause for five minutes and assess how you’re feeling right now and whether you’re on the path to burnout.

If you recognise the warning signs and you’re ready to stop feeling mentally, physically or emotionally exhausted, then Rebalance might be the perfect next step for you.

REBALANCE

Rebalance is a 30 day, self-guided audio programme to bring you back from the brink of burnout.

Designed to be listened to on a short walk each day, helping you to create space in your day for you.

Each day, I share one idea, concept or tool that you can use. By the end of the 30 days, you’ll have come back from burnout, feel calm, energetic and rested, and have created a working life you love that fits into the life you desire.

Ep 51 – Are we addicted to productivity?06 Jun 202100:21:07

The way work is designed doesn’t work for so many of us for so many reasons. I believe that the value we place on productivity and ticking off the to do list is resulting in overwork, burnout and ineffective leaders.

In this week’s episode, I’m sharing why I think it’s time that leaders take a step back, question the structure of their work and focus on what really makes an impact in their role.

I’ve combined this one of my podcast episodes from 2019 – Hard work is not the answer.

I speak about:

The culture of productivity and why we should reimagine the way we work

How you can challenge a common leadership belief held by many

Why thinking, feeling and acting like a leader is more important than your to do list

Practical steps for prioritising your own development as a leader

Over investing in your role, working overtime and pushing yourself towards burnout isn’t healthy for you or your team.

If you're working really hard and still not getting the results that you want then this episode is your encouragement to pause, rethink and make changes.

In next week’s episode I’ll be extending on this theme and speaking about leadership burnout, what the signs are and how to prevent it. Look out for that on Monday 14 June.

Ep 50 – Neurodiversity at Work with Professor Amanda Kirby30 May 202101:02:48

In this week’s episode, I interview Professor Amanda Kirby about a fascinating topic – neurodiversity – and how we can create inclusive workplaces for everyone.

Neurodiversity is an emerging subject especially in relation to adults and the workplace. Put simply, it defines the different ways we think, act and communicate.

Some of us are neurodivergent which means the way we do these things is different from the “average” or “norm”. This influences our individual strengths and challenges.

In the episode we discussed:

  • What neurodiversity is and understanding what it means for individuals at work
  • The positive benefits of having a neurodiverse workplace
  • How leaders and work spaces can support neurodivergent colleagues
  • Practical ways you can create an inclusive recruitment and onboarding process
  • Amanda’s tool for profiling your own neurodiverse strengths and challenges

I hope this podcast helps you to understand neurodiversity better, consider how you can create an open and supportive environment for neurodivergent team members and embrace the strengths they bring to their work.

If you’d like to assess your own neurodiversity, you can do it for free on the Neurodiversity App.

Download it here: https://profiler.app/nd-app/

Have you thought about getting a coach or joining a course but immediately dismissed it because your organization has no budget?

Have you considered asking your employer to invest in you but felt too awkward about it to actually make the ask?

Ep 49 – Struggle and Leadership with Grace Marshall23 May 202100:51:43

As a leader do you feel comfortable sharing when you’re struggling? In general, we don’t talk about struggle a lot but Grace Marshall wants to open up the conversation.

This week on the Influence & Impact for Female Leaders podcast, I interviewed Grace about struggle, leadership and her new book Struggle: the surprising truth, beauty and opportunity hidden in life’s sh*ttier moments.

We discussed:

  • Why we all have struggle and why we should remove the self-judgement around it
  • What you can do if you’re struggling as a leader
  • The power of your emotions and how you can acknowledge and express them in a work environment
  • Grace’s unique three step process for handling struggle as it happens

As a leader, sometimes we put ourselves on a pedestal and hold high expectations of how we should handle difficult or uncertain situations.

I hope this episode helps you to see struggle from a different perspective, understand that you don’t always need to show up perfectly or have everything figured out and that it’s ok to ask for support.

As Grace says, what if struggle is precisely where the magic happens? Shouldn’t we embrace it if it’s where we can do our best, most important work?

Ep 48 - Mental Health First Aid16 May 202100:53:22

Everyone has mental health but not everyone feels comfortable talking about it, especially in the workplace. Danielle Bridge, founder and CEO of ABC Life Support CIC, is opening up the conversation on this week’s podcast.

We discussed:

What mental health first aid is and why it’s important

Practical ways leaders can recognise and support mental health in the workplace

How leaders can set boundaries when supporting their teams

The rise of burnout and its impact on mental health

How you can get help if you’re struggling mentally and emotionally

Although many workplaces have programmes in place to support the health of their employees, they aren’t being used by many and there’s still a stigma attached to mental health issues. In fact, 90% of people who are off of work for mental health challenges cite a different reason.

After listening to this episode, I encourage you to look at what support is available in your organisation and open up the conversation with your team.

Take a few of Danielle’s ideas for supporting others and creating a safe space for mental health in your workplace.

Ep 47 – Fertility and the Workplace09 May 202101:11:14

This week on the podcast I interview Cat Strawbridge, a fertility advocate and host of the Finally Pregnant Podcast, and Frankie Hockham, Fertility Network UK volunteer on infertility, pregnancy loss and childlessness.

Infertility is a disease that affects 1 in 6 couples, the majority of whom are in the workforce, however it is not an issue that is talked about or well supported in organisations in the UK.

We discussed:

Our personal experiences with fertility treatments, loss and pregnancy while working

How you can communicate your fertility situation to your manager or employer

What you can do to get the support you need from your organisation

Practical ways leaders can proactively support team members or colleagues having fertility treatments or dealing with infertility

I hope this episode shines a light on the effect infertility and fertility treatments has on individuals in the workplace, gives both those affected and those supporting helpful tips and encourages you to take action to improve fertility policies in your organisation.

If you would like support with infertility, fertility treatments, loss or childlessness, please reach out to The Fertility Network UK and use the resources they provide on their website: https://fertilitynetworkuk.org/

If you’d like to know more about fertility in the workplace, visit: https://fertilitynetworkuk.org/trying-to-conceive/fertility-at-work/

MORE ABOUT CAT

Finally Pregnant Podcast host, community leader and fertility advocate Cat Strawbridge is a fertility patient who has experienced multiple rounds of fertility treatment and sadly pregnancy loss. Cat now supports the trying to conceive (TTC) community and those who are finally pregnant and parenting after infertility and loss. Cat has worked with corporates to embed fertility policies, education and training to staff and managers and supports to all those affected by infertility and loss.

MORE ABOUT FRANKIE

Like so many, Frankie has been affected and impacted by infertility and pregnancy loss. Throughout her fertility journey, she was struck by how isolating the experience can be and how unprepared they were for what was to come due to lack of support and information. On sharing her story, several our friends, colleagues and even family came forward to talk about their secret struggles with fertility.

Because of this, Frankie became a volunteer for the Fertility Network UK and now speaks publicly to raise awareness of infertility, pregnancy loss and childlessness. Frankie wants to help ensure others realise that they’re not alone.

Ep 44 How we give our power away18 Apr 202100:37:13

We give our power away in so many ways without even realising it.  In this episode, I share 13 ways we often give our power away at work, ranging from boundaries and people pleasing to deferring authority and underestimating ourselves.

Ep 42 Are you running on autopilot?04 Apr 202100:32:07

I’ve been running on autopilot lately, head down constantly focusing on the next task.  So I’ve taken a few days out at the end of my financial year to stop and do some reflection and I found it really powerful.  So in this episode of the Influence & Impact podcast I thought I’d share some of the powerful questions I use to reflect and course correct when I’ve been running on autopilot.

We’ll be exploring what success actually means to us, uncovering what’s driving our behaviour and how we can wake up to and enjoy the moment more.

The Meaning of Success

"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a little better; whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is the meaning of success."

Ep 41 What I wish I’d know about managing28 Mar 202100:38:02

20 years ago I took on my first management role.  It was much more of a personal development journey than I ever imagined it would be because it triggered all of my doubts about myself, all my unhelpful stories and it highlighted how much I didn’t know.  I wished that management and my team members came with a manual I could read so I could do it right without risking making any mistakes.

In this episode I’m sharing the things I wish my 26 year old self had known about managing.  These are the things that would have made my life much easier and happier!  I hope they help you if you’re at the start of your management and leadership journey.

Ep 38 Why perfectionism and overworking could be holding you back07 Mar 202100:38:29

For years I thought that I was doing well in my career because I worked so hard and held myself to such high standards.  Then I realised that those strategies were actually causing as much harm as they were good.

I coach a lot of high achieving women, at all levels and perfectionism in its various guises, crops up all the time.  We may not consider ourselves to be perfectionist but often it looks like overworking, trying to be in control of everything in your life, procrastinating and fear of failure.

In this episode of the Influence & Impact podcast I’d like to help you to identify and reflect on any unhelpful patterns you may have around perfectionism so that you can stop holding yourself to such impossibly high standards.

Ep 36 Returning from parental leave with confidence with Lizzie Martin21 Feb 202101:09:15

In this episode of the Influence & Impact podcast for female leaders I’m chatting to Lizzie Martin of Work Life Mother about how to return from parental leave with confidence and how as leaders we can support parents with this transition.

We talk about how you can prepare for your return, negotiation with your line manager, the skills we learn from parenting and getting yourself back in the work mindset before you return.

Lizzie is an executive coach, former senior leader of 10 years within the retail space, mother to two sassy daughters and founder of Work Life Mother. For the past 3 years she has been working with individuals and organisations providing parental transition coaching - aimed to support any professional returning from a period of parental leave so that they can come back to work with confidence and impact.

Lizzie says “It was when I was on my first maternity leave that I truly understood the complexities of returning to work as a new parent. I saw many women who were left to figure it all out on their own, it's a particularly overwhelming period of what can be a long fulfilling career yet without the right support many women experience self-doubt, low confidence and poor career development support and this can mean they downshift their careers or leave the workforce altogether.”

This is a really honest account of the ups and downs of my career and I hope that you’ll find something in here that resonates with where you are  now.

Ep 32 Why we look to others for validation24 Jan 202100:25:39

Like many of the female leaders I work with, I have often found myself seeking reassurance, feedback and validation from others in order to feel like I am enough.  This is something I’ve been making a lot of progress with over the last few years and I see it come up again and again in the group coaching calls within my programme so I thought it would make a good episode for the podcast.  It seems that the isolation of working from home has really exacerbated this issue for many people as well.

In this episode of the Influence & Impact podcast I’ll be talking about where that need for validation comes from, how it is holding us back and the first steps you can take to stop giving your power away to other people and start getting your validation from yourself rather than others.

You can now sign up for my FREE masterclass How To Be An Influential Leader without letting self-doubt hold you back (link is https://carlamiller.lpages.co/how-to-be-an-influentialleader).  It is available until 7 February 2021 so be sure to watch it whilst you can.

Ep 31 How To Have More Gravitas17 Jan 202100:27:43

This week’s episode of the Influence & Impact podcast for female leaders is all about gravitas.  What is it?  What do we need it for?  And how do we have gravitas when we need it most?

Gravitas used to be a requirement for leadership, back in the days when leadership was about telling others what to do.  It is defined as dignity, seriousness or being solemn of manner.  Leadership has evolved since then and women no longer need to act like old men in grey suits to be taken seriously as leaders.  However there are times when we have to deliver serious news or address a room full of people who intimidate us and gravitas helps with that.  In this episode I’m sharing some tools you can use in those situations.

Ep 30 Talking Redundancy and Resilience with Eleanor Tweddell10 Jan 202101:09:03

In this episode of the Influence & Impact podcast for female leaders I'm chatting to Eleanor Tweddell, author of the book "Why Losing Your Job Could Be the Best Thing That Ever Happened To You".  We talk about how to thrive when you've been made redundant, from dealing with those initial emotions to making decisions about your next steps.

We also discuss how leaders who are making colleagues redundant can handle it with kindness.  Redundancy is one of life's big events and Eleanor has done a wonderful job of taking her experiences and creating a toolkit others can use.

About my guest: Eleanor Tweddell founded Another Door when she was made redundant and had a feeling she wanted to do something other than corporate life. She has worked for organisations such as Costa Coffee, Virgin Atlantic, Vodafone and Channel 4 - but it felt like it was time to change.  She said to get curious about what else was out there, and what else could she be doing. Ep 155 – How to Support a Team Member Who Lacks Confidence12 Feb 202400:16:29

If you’ve got a team member who lacks confidence it could be impacting their performance, their career progression and how they feel about work.

Confidence issues are widespread with 79% of women saying they lack confidence at work.  And it impacts people’s ability to perform and progress. 46% of women say managing a negative mindset stops them from making the impact they want at work whilst 37% of women identified a lack of confidence and self-belief in their own ability as an obstacle to career progression

So how do you help people in your team build their confidence and unlock their potential?

In this episode, I’m going to share 6 practical ways you can help a team member feel more confident in their role, as well as 3 traps to avoid to make sure you’re not labelling someone as unconfident when that may not be the issue.

We’ll look at…

  • How the type of feedback you give makes a real difference

  • How you might be impacting the confidence of your team

  • How you can use coaching questions to support their self-awareness and self-belief

  • Ways to make them feel valued

  • How modelling and encouraging a growth mindset can help

Ep 27 - Taking Control of Your Career06 Dec 202000:19:35

Gone are the days when we could rely on our line manager to recognise our potential and plan for our career development.  In fact, I think that was always a bit of a myth anyway with the majority of workplaces.  But 2020 has shown us that the only person who has the headspace to think about your career development is you.  So, today’s episode of the Influence & Impact podcast is going to help you do just that.

Whether you are happy in your role or thinking of moving on, it is a good idea to know what your next step will be and be working towards that.  And your next step doesn’t have to be upwards - it could be a sideways move, a new sector or a new work-life balance so you can spend more time with the kids or starting your sourdough side hustle.

In this episode I am going to talk you through some helpful strategies to help you create a fulfilling and successful career.
