You gotta love a roguelike deckbuilder. It's the peanutbutter and chocolate of genres. The randomness and run-to-run differentiation, with the short-loop tactics of building a deck. It's so good together! Except sometimes you get a peanutbutter guy and then spend the next ten minutes looking for mr. chocolate until you hit the big ugly jelly boss and he blaps you back to the goddamn home screen. I'm not mad. I'm not mad! Don't let them tell you I'm mad. This game is too cute for that. We're finally putting Outer Wilds (mostly) behind us, as four of the the five of us have finished - and all five of us have some really big thoughts. Mostly praise! This was a game truely like no other, and while Feather from the future really wants you to know the game is like an 8.5 / 10 (even if it's a 5/5 hole score) it's still a special gem that we're all glad to have gotten to experience. Outer Wilds is an absolute joy of a game, capturing wonder and exploration and puzzles in a near-perfect little solar system. It's so good, that we're recommending you hold off on this episode (or at least all of the episode after about 20 minutes in) until you've started it. Not finished it, mind you - we haven't finished it either! (Except Gary, who doesn't count.) This episode is just part 1. In fact, the ideal way to consume both Outer Wilds and Infinite Cities might just be to play about 8-10 hours, then come listen to us, where you can sync up with our confusion across the bounds of time and space. From that cross-dimensional mind meld that is podcasting, you can go back out into the littlest solar system with a fresh perspective and a few new theories. You have to admire and respect games that are willing to be themselves so strongly that they turn people off. Nine Sols is willing to give you just a little bit of a hand (amazing difficulty sliders), but if that can't get you over the hump - all of its worldbuilding and art and laser-tight combat just aren't for you. Nine Sols' purity of will is so strong, it can even parry you. In this episode: Nerts! This game feels like a prototype to that, trading Beast's frenetic relentless energy for a drawn out character study. Sometimes, it's okay to give into nostalgia. Let the bitcrunched trumpets and adorable sprites take you back to your childhood, away to a world full of potential, one full of exciting people and wonder and amazing critters who you can love and travel with and villains who want to kill everyone but are still easily defeatable by fourteen year olds. In this ep, we speculate what happened to pokemon. Honestly, I'm not sure anything happened to it - I think that instead, something happened to us. I think we grew up, and the world grew up with us. There's no point wondering what's out beyond that horizon - we have maps, and wikis, and know there are exactly 1,025 pokemon but only 653 are in Pokemon Violet if you have all the DLCs. I don't think there's room for the antics of team rocket or team magma. I think we're all just out here, looking for a chance to feel the same way we did when we took our first steps out into that tall grass, not knowing what we were going to find. It's a lot to expect for a little game, but maybe, this one is enough for us.
