We did a little bit of poking around and thought you might enjoy learning more about this quintessential American holiday, especially those who are New Americans like us.

4:50 pm The local chapter of The Indus Entrepreneurs – better known as TiE – relishes showcasing new innovative ideas through regular meetings and holding competitions, like the TiE U Global Hackathon held on November 1 through 3, which yielded two winners with innovative projects. We asked TiE Houston Education Chair & Board Member Dr. Ravi Brahmbhatt to tell us more about this and introduce us to the two winners Luka Neal and Adel Sisy. 

5:30 pm The new movie by Shoojit Sircar, I want To Talk, opened up on November 22, It has been highly acclaimed for its subject matter dealing with the multiple health and emotionalcrises of a young man known for his marketing acumen, Arjun Sen, played onscreen by the Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan in a strong, character portrayal. It is a remarkable story of a man’s will to overcome many obstacles and persevere and we are very proud to have Sen in our studio today to tell his story.

4:20 pm This weekend, starting on Thursday, August 15 through Sunday, August 18, the Ashtalakshmi Temple on Synott Rd. officially inaugurates the giant 90-foot statue of Hanuman which will be visible from miles away. Made of bronze, it is located in a clearing on the temple site and is the tallest statue of Hanuman in the US. Once again, we turn to temple Board members Dr. Ravi Timarisa and his brother, Dr. Chary Timarisa to tell us how this project was envisioned and details of the ongoing festivities.

5:00 pm In the brutal summer sun of Houston, we are all advised to use plenty of sunscreen on exposed parts of the body. Yet a simple task like driving in short sleeves can give your left arm a tan and we think nothing about it. Skincare can be crucial as the body ages, but what works best on South Asians, who are also more susceptible to skin cancers? Dr. Tejas Desai of Heights Dermatology joins us today to explain what some common skin problems are and how to treat them.

5:30 pm The rape and murder of a 31 year-old doctor in Kolkata, India at the government run RG Kar Medical College on August 9 has led to waves of protests and strikes all across the nation with demands of justice and more safety procedures. It has also galvanized many outraged Houstonians and we turn to Sayoni Bhattacharya, Dinesh Adhikari and Mondakini Chatterjee from the Bengali community for their reaction.

4:20 pm In 21 more days, on December 9, Houstonians and residents of surrounding cities will vote in many runoffs for municipal positions. In Houston City Council District G, the incumbent Mary Nan Huffman will face challenger Tony Buzbee, a high-powered attorney who has become widely known for winning high-profile cases like the recent one against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Tony ran for Houston Mayor in 2019 but lost to Sylvester Turner. He will join us now to explain why he is seeking the District G position and what he hopes to accomplish.

4:50 pm The nonpartisan Migration Policy Institute is a Washington DC think tank that provides research, analysis and ideas about complex immigration related issues.  MPI’s Senior Analyst Dr Valerie Lecarte authored a new report on the growing contributions of immigrant populations to the Houston Metro Area, its growing diversity and challenges. She joins us now to talk about her findings.

5:20 pm The Sikh Center on Prairie St in the northwest part of the city was the first Gurdwara that opened in Texas in 1973. It has been recognized as a Historical site and a plaque will be placed to honor 50 years of serving the Sikh community. We turn to Bhupinder “Bo” Singh, who has written a small book on the history of the Sikh Center, for more information and details of the planned celebration ceremony on December 3. He will be joined by Hardeep Kaur who has served as the Centers’ past President.

DA Kristena Glenn who is responsible for criminal enforcement of environmental cases involving air, water, hazardous waste, and solid waste violations. She will share with us how these crimes are prosecuted and what the penalties are.

5:00 pm When Sam and Omana Abraham arrived in the US in 1973 to do their further studies, they had no intention of staying, but destiny intervened. Instead, they started a rug import company that grew into Abraham’s Oriental Rugs which will celebrate 50 years next year. We will talk with this delightful couple about their business and how to buy and carefor rugs and even restore them.

5:20 pm The IIT Alumni Association of Greater Houston brings together many of the brightest of Indian minds who graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology system, later immigrated to this country and are making their marks in all facets of industry in the Houston area. We hear from current President Surupa Shaw about the group’s planned local activities and PANIIT Global Conference next year in Washington, DC.
