IWP Ep69 Tom Sherwood - BXT Wines. I sat down recently with Tom Sherwood of BXT wines to talk about his sparkling wine project. Tom is doing some really great things with small production, hand made and lower intervention California sparkling wine.  He’s based in the grower Champagne model and farms some of his own fruit in Sonoma and works with other great growers up and down the state.  The wines range from very traditionally made Blanc de Blanc and Blanc de Noir to his solera based perpetual oxidation and other boundary pushing styles.   You can find them at BXTwines.com or follow Tom on Instagram at BXTwines.

IWP Ep68 Bryan Green - Fontaine Glassware. I recently spoke with Bryan Green of Fontaine.  Fontaine is a newish glassware line designed by Brian with help from winemakers, sommeliers and enthusiasts.  We discuss their first product - a stemmed spirits glass and the design process for a universal wine glass.  It was all super interesting.  I’ve been really enjoying the glass, with a variety of wines too, some Zins and field blends, Mataro, Syrah, a white blend, a Vermentino, a Pinot and some other wines I’ve tried from it so far.  You can find them at https://fontaineglass.com/ or fontaineglass on instagram.

IWP Ep59 The California Wine Association (CWA) - Part 4 - The Calamity Edition. Today is part 4 in my series on the California Wine Association.  “The Calamity Edition”  Last time we saw the CWA gobble up their competitors after the end of the wine wars.  They absorbed wineries, vineyards and wine houses.   When they couldn’t purchase the entire company, they would get half.  Allowing companies to operate with the veil of independence would keep the antitrust folks away. It was all fair game and they came out with control of over 2/3rds of the wine in the state. Today we see how they do in a battle against mother nature.

IWP Ep58 The California Wine Association (CWA) - Part 3 - Shopping Spree. This is part 3 of my series on the California Wine Association.  Last episode we saw them battle the California Wine Makers Corporation in the so called “Wine Wars”  The CWA was able to come out on top, as the winemakers Corporation was never able to truly work as 1 entity.  The CWA was also able to hang on as wine prices dropped and dropped, making it tough to survive for those smaller producers. The production of California wine is firmly in the CWA’s control now.  Today we see how they went from being large to being massive and became the dominating presence in California Wine.

IWP Ep57 The California Wine Association (CWA) - Part 2 - The Wine Wars. This is the 2nd part of my series on the California Wine Association or CWA.  Last time we focussed on why and how the CWA came to be and some of the key players behind it including Percy Morgan, Charles Carpy, Samual Lachman and Kohler and Frohling.  Incorporation was finished in August of 1894, just in time for harvest of that year.  The wine firms involved already had San Francisco based offices and cellars and the CWA would make use of these, utilizing the best aspects of each.

Today we’ll look at the “Wine War” where a conglomerate of winegrowers would battle against the CWA for control of the California wine industry.  They were called the California Wine Makers Corporation, I might refer to them also as “The Corporation” or the CWMC.  This one is deep dive into the politics of the late 1800's wines business.
