Digital Literacy, Information Literacy, & Media Literacy08 Jul 202200:39:19

This is Ep#17.

The big 5 Tech companies in the world, Google, Apple, Meta, Amazon & Microsoft had sales revenue of $ 1.4 Trillion, which is more than the the GDP of Mexico. 86% of all the searches online happen on Google. Facebook has 2.9 Billion Monthly Active Users. YouTube has over 2.3 Billion users, and it is the second-largest search engine after Google. We are bombarded with so much information through different mediums. In these times of so much of information, it is important to know how to navigate through the chaos and exposure of excess of Media, Information and Digital/Technology. The new YouTube video is an attempt to address that issue. These skills involve the ability to access and assess information, media, and digital technology to critically evaluate and understand the different aspects of content and information. Digital literacy: One needs to know which sources are reliable for accessing the digital information. Also one needs to know the dangers of data security. Understanding the machines and the instruments that help in spreading the information. Technology literacy gives us the basic information that we need to understand what gadgets perform what tasks and why to adapt to the world more effectively. Information literacy: Since are bombarded with information from different sources it is possible to create a mechanism of propaganda instead of giving just pure information. One has to guard against the same. Understanding facts, figures, and data. This skill is essential, as it is important to separate facts from fiction, in an age that is surrounded by a lot of misinformation, myths, and, misconceptions. Media literacy: All media houses are run for profit. So they have to sell news to remain in business. One must understand this concept very clearly. Understanding how information is shared with the public. It is the practice of identifying publishing methods, outlets, and sources while distinguishing between the ones that are credible and the ones that aren’t.

A Conversation with Mrs. Priya Kailad Makharia, Karma Foundation, Pune11 Jun 202200:45:48

This is Ep#21.

Priya Kailad Makharia, Founder of Karma Foundation, Pune

Karma Foundation started in 2018 in a small space and they slowly expanded into a 14,000 sq ft space within the first year itself. Priya’s motivation to start Karma was the dire need for a charitable hospital which was located in the heart of the city and is easily accessible for the stray animals who face severe illnesses and injuries each day on the streets of the city. Priya wanted to create an advanced medical centre for these animals with a state-of-the-art medical facility and the latest equipment available. It was always Priya’s calling to work with stray animals and provide them with the best possible medical aid. Over the last 4 years, Karma Foundation has set up IPD wards, an OPD clinic, a fully functional Operation theatre, a diagnostic unit, and we are now also conducting training programs for veterinarians across India where the foundation provides them with coaching specific to their requests.

Priya hopes and advises the young adults of today that they are the future and that their contribution towards animal welfare would be satisfying and would make a huge positive difference to the voiceless animals and their lives. India needs veterinarians who are ethically and skilfully sound as well as upgraded with the latest medical advancements and advanced medical equipment which are striving to achieve through our training programs for budding veterinarians.

What after 10th/12th Grade: Choosing the Right Career Path08 May 202200:58:08

This is Ep# 16.

10th grade is in a true sense the crossroads for making the right career decision for the students. One can change the course of the career post-12th grade or even post-graduation and post graduation also. But that would be wasting one's own time and limited resources as well. The competition is intense, hence, it is important to make an informed decision about your child's career. Traditionally, Parents in India and Indian parents abroad are glued to only a few career options for their children. This webinar was to address the issue of career selection, keeping in my how the world is shaping up and how that has an impact on the future careers. A Choice should also consider the individual's Personality, Ability and Interests and not just academic excellence in a particular subject.

Importance of Profile Building for School Students 13 Mar 202200:48:24

This is EP#8.

The children and young population in India are one of the highest cohorts at this point in time. Children born between 1997 to 2010 now contribute to a little over 36 crores of India’s total population of over 140 Crores.

As the population of this cohort increases in India, the growth in school admissions also growing accordingly. Between 2010 to 2021, there is a 185% increase in the number of students passing from CBSE (from 7 Lakhs to 13 Lakhs). https://www.cbse.gov.in/newsite/statisticalInformation.html

Also, there is a substantial increase in the manner the children are now scoring marks in the 10th board exams. Students scoring 90% or more have increased 8 times between 2010 to 2020 (17,546 to 1,57,934). And students scoring 95% or more has just doubled in two years (2019 to 2020). https://www.cbse.gov.in/cbsenew/statistics.html

At the same time, admissions into the top colleges and universities in India and Abroad are becoming tougher.

For example, getting into the top 100 Engineering colleges in India (which have approx. 45000 seats) in India could be very tough at just 3.6%. The probability to get into IIT or NIT is 1.1% and 1.7% respectively. There is a YouTube video about this which you can check out. https://youtu.be/gqXRj__BFzc.

Getting into the MBBS or BDS college in India is also fairly tough, there are about 83 K MBBS seats and 26 K BDS Seats, and over 16 Lakhs students attempt to get into those colleges. Check out a relevant video about the same on YouTube: https://youtu.be/5QlAoYOo60I

Another example of the Law exam, CLAT, for about 2100 seats, over 62 K students appeared in 2021.

In the National Education Policy, there is mention of the shift from the traditional method to the more holistic approach of assessment soon.

In view of the above developments in terms of the demographics of India and the changes in the proposed National Educational Policy, it is prudent to engage your child in some kind of holistic development program which can be Co-Curricular, extra-curricular, Academic Honors Programs, Career-Focused Courses, and Summer Internship Programs to give the child the various career options before choosing the best fit.

Holistic development will take a few years ranging from 1 to 4 years, so the early one starts, the better for the child in the wake of the forthcoming intense competition in his or her cohort.

Challenging the status quo: University Contracts in the Digital Age, Featuring John Connolly Introduction of Guest: John Connolly has extensive experience in higher education, particularly in the UK and Australia. John's Journey: From mature student to international student recruitment in university sales and marketing. Traditional Challenges: Inefficiencies, lack of pipeline control, high costs, and limited access for smaller/newer agents in university-agent agreements. Birth of Feezy: A digital platform created by John to connect universities and agents more efficiently. Feezy's Functionality: Enables universities to scale student sourcing and establish transparent, flexible commission agreements. Benefits of Feezy: Reduces sales costs, improves student diversity, and increases direct collaborations between universities and agents. Feezy's Progress: Founded two years ago, gradually gaining traction with universities and agents embracing digitalization. Future Expansion: Leveraging data and AI for insights, enhancing transparency, and showcasing agent performance and compliance. Market Insights: Changing international education dynamics, need for efficient, data-driven student recruitment. Current Challenges: geopolitical issues, visa difficulties, high acquisition costs, and negative margins in major markets (Australia, Canada, UK). 2025 Market Outlook: Sustained student demand for accessible markets, potential disruptions in the US/Australia, and growth opportunities in non-traditional markets (Germany, South Asia, Southeast Asia). Recommendations: Optimize commission agreements and spending. Use digital platforms like Feezy to scale efficiently. Collaborate between universities and agents on recruitment. Feezy Platform: Quick onboarding (30-35 minutes). Offering free trials, moving to paid trials as revenue secures. Clear planning and goal-setting for users. Future Education Pricing: Potential variable pricing models based on affordability. Adjust pricing and discount policies for "Global South" students. Closing Remarks: Acknowledging current market challenges. Encourage exploration of the Feezy platform for more information.
