#1 - Launching In Good Faith: Exploring the God-centred life03 May 202501:10:33

In this inaugural episode of In Good Faith, Iqbal Nasim — educator, speaker and writer on the topics of prayer, giving, leadership and revelation — is joined by guest host Taimur Abdaal.

Together, they discuss what this new show is all about, focusing on the profound question: what does it mean to lead a truly God-centred life?

This conversation examines the personal and societal implications of orienting one’s life around divine guidance.

With plenty of reflection on scripture, Iqbal and Taimur talk about how the prescriptions of faith are not arbitrary, but divinely calibrated for human flourishing.

They consider the opportunities and challenges of the status quo and also discuss how revelation offers a framework for living with purpose, integrity and clarity in the modern world.

An invitation to thoughtful, sincere inquiry, this episode sets the tone for a podcast that seeks to uncover the principles and practicalities of being truly faithful in the 21st century.

#2 - How Does God Explain the Purpose and Benefits of Prayer?10 May 202500:52:12

In this episode of In Good Faith, Taimur and I discuss the single most important action in the life of a believer: prayer (salat).

After some initial reflections on the importance of meaningful communication through our prayer - and exploring some analogies to illustrate how it should fit coherently into our overall lives - we referred to a number of verses from revelation to see how God Himself explains this central topic.

(0:00) - Prayer as connection

(46:49) - How not to pray and taking prayer seriously

#3 - Is Arabic Making Your Faith Less Real?16 May 202501:15:31

In this discussion, Taimur and I go deep into exploring the way we as believers use certain Arabic phrases in our day to day lives. Why is it that we say certain things in Arabic instead of English amongst ourselves? Do we say these phrases meaningfully? Why is it that we don't feel comfortable saying the English equivalents with those outside our community even when it's relevant to do so? We tackle these questions with plenty of practical examples and scenarios. We also explore the issue of language in the context of "du'a", i.e. calling upon God. Finally we revisit the appropriateness of the way we think and speak about "Islam" and "Muslims" with some analysis of key verses in revelation. I think this episode makes for our best conversation so far. Hopefully it gives you plenty of food for thought and a basis upon which to reflect on your own practice. Azim Kidwai is CEO of Mercy Mission, Chairman of the Bradford District Community Foundation and, most of all, my best friend.

After we first met in 2010, Azim was the one who helped me transition from investment banking to taking the helm at National Zakat Foundation the following year. He's been the most wonderful mentor, colleague and comrade ever since.

Azim doesn't do podcasts. So I'm honoured that he made an exception for me. I hope that you benefit from this enriching conversation in the same way that I did.

#42 - Prof James Walters: A Christian View on Nationalism, Pluralism & Religious Resurgence09 Feb 202601:28:32

Why are Bible sales and Church attendance on the rise? Why are far-right nationalists invoking Christian beliefs and symbols? Is there a way forward for Britain that unifies its citizens and respects difference?

To learn more about these questions, I spoke to James Walters, both a priest and a professor. James is founding director of the LSE Faith Centre and LSE Religion and Global Society. He is a Professor in Practice, affiliated to the Department for International Relations and an associate of the LSE Department of International Development.

#41 - Dr Mamnun Khan: Muslim Identity Needs to Shift to Substance Over Form03 Feb 202601:09:48

Like me, Dr Mamnun Khan has a big issue with how we understand basic terms such as "Muslim"... but we differ on the best practical way forward. Much of this discussion was dedicated to hashing out questions of identity, not just in terms of how we see ourselves, but also how we see and relate to others.

Dr Mamnun is the author of Being British Muslims: Beyond Ethnocentric Religion and Identity Politics, and a Fellow at Equi think tank. He explores the topics of identity, Islam, and the social integration of Muslims in contemporary Britain. His work critically examines the challenges and opportunities faced by British Muslims, advocating for a balanced God-centred approach that transcends ethnocentrism and ideological extremes. In his spare time, Mamnun advises a number of UK organisations on projects and strategy. He has over 20 years of experience in corporate management and strategy in the science and tech sector.

#40 - Dr Roger McFillin: There is a Dark Agenda to DISCONNECT You from God22 Jan 202601:19:12

A top clinical psychologist who speaks about the importance of putting God at the centre of discussions around mental health?

That’s an unusual mix nowadays and it’s what got me interested in speaking with Dr Roger McFillin, who has over two decades of experience in his field but who is also rebelling against much of what is practised within it.

He’s on a determined mission to expose the harsh truths about the mental health industry that others avoid or overlook, and his Radically Genuine podcast is a hard-hitting exploration of what it really takes to overcome life's toughest challenges, free from the constraints of traditional therapy-speak.

More recently he’s been writing and speaking about the deliberate and dark attempts by powerful proponents of the transhuman agenda to rob us of our connection with God and, in the process, dehumanise us completely.

Is "Islam" Best Understood as a RELIGION... or Something Else? [#1 Highlight]20 Jan 202600:07:40

I reflect briefly on the usage of the terms "Islam" and "Muslim" in revelation.

The way in which these terms are understood has significant implications for how believers see themselves and how their public narratives are shaped.

The ONLY Relationship That MATTERS In The End [#4 Highlight]17 Jan 202600:06:10

The last verse (110) of Chapter 18 (The Cave) of the Quran forces us to think about the true nature of our relationship with God.

Do we yearn to encounter the divine, or do we shy away from the inevitable meeting?

In this highlight clip, Azim Kidwai - CEO of Mercy Mission and Chairman of the Bradford District Community Foundation - reminds us that In the end, all earthly bonds will fall away, and what remains is only one relationship: the servant and the Master.

#39 - Dr Wajid Akhter: Why Muslims Are POWERLESS And What We NEED To Do About It15 Jan 202601:20:22

In this conversation, I sat down with Dr Wajid Akhter to reflect on his first year as Secretary-General of the Muslim Council of Britain. It was a sobering - and at times shocking - exchange. His verdict: Muslims are facing multiple, urgent, interconnected crises, yet they are not responding with the speed, coordination or seriousness the moment demands.

We touched on a whole host of issues: from mental health problems and youth disengagement to health inequalities, political powerlessness and institutional inertia... not to mention Gaza and grooming gangs. So what is the solution? What is MCB doing about it? Is it being sufficiently backed by the very community it exists to serve and represent?

In addition to his voluntary MCB role, Dr Wajid Akhter works as a GP. He is the founder of Charity Week, as well as a founding member of the British Islamic Medical Association (BIMA) and the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management. His passions include history, public speaking and travelling.

DON’T Let Your Past Define Your Future [#7 Highlight]14 Jan 202600:13:01

Most people feel trapped because they let past decisions, social expectations and fear define their future, instead of first identifying their true ideal.

Real alignment begins when you strip away constraints, clarify what you would pursue if success were guaranteed and time were limited, and then move towards that vision gradually and intentionally.

Are Muslim Legal Frameworks Still FIT FOR PURPOSE? [#6 Highlight]12 Jan 202600:17:36

Muslim legal tradition ended up crystallising in four schools of law: Hanafi, Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali.

But does it need to be this way forever more?

Some insist that no change is needed and that for a person to adhere unquestioningly to one of them is vital.

Others claim that these schools remain invaluable in theory but they need radical revision in practice.

Still others that they should all be done away with and something else needs to take their place if we are to confront seriously the significant challenges of the day.

Whatever one's view, it seems clear that the contemporary situation is very messy and that it confuses most people who want to do the right thing.

In this highlight clip, we hear from Dr Haroon Sidat, currently a research associate and scholar at Cardiff University's Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK.

So what defines home? What's happening to people's sense of belonging? Is it really time to leave?

#34 - Ismael Dainehine: Why BITCOIN Is My Last Hope For Truly IMPACTFUL Charity11 Dec 202501:29:10

I've never been a fan of MyTenNights (MTN), the charity platform that has facilitated over $100m of donations by offering timed contributions on the Night of Decree (laylatul-qadr) in the month of Ramadan. Now it seems that the person who founded it, Ismael Dainehine, isn't too much of a fan of what he built either!

We spoke about his recent and very significant turning point in how he understands the purpose and contemporary reality of charitable activities, and also how the absence of a sound monetary system undermines the possibility of the very outcomes that aid is intended to achieve.

Now Ismael's focus is fully on EverGive, a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve for social impact. I challenged him on various aspects of the existing operational model and we discussed what the future might hold for this new offering.

#33 - Harris Irfan: Whether BITCOIN Goes Up Or Down Is NOT The Point!04 Dec 202501:21:58

In this conversation, I explore another perspective on the potential future of Bitcoin as sound money, this time with Harris Irfan, a veteran of the Islamic finance industry.

We discussed some of the common arguments against Bitcoin as a possible medium of exchange as well as what the transition to a Bitcoin-based world might actually look like.

Harris is the CEO of Cordoba Capital Markets and advisor to Onramp MENA. He is former co-founder of Deutsche Bank Islamic Finance. He has three decades of professional experience in London and the Middle East, specialising in Islamic finance and fintech.

He is also author of the critically acclaimed best-seller, "Heaven's Bankers: Inside the Hidden World of Islamic Finance". He is Chairman of the UK Islamic FinTech Panel, and has been ranked in the Top 100 BAME Leaders in UK Tech by the Financial Times.

#32 - Muhammed Yesilhark: A MASTERCLASS On Why The BITCOIN Revolution Will SAVE Humanity27 Nov 202501:47:20

If you're thinking about the price of Bitcoin in terms of dollars or pounds... you're missing the point. The real power of Bitcoin, says investment expert Muhammed Yesilhark, lies in its intrinsic properties that make it a form of digital gold, i.e. a form of sound money that can protect your savings, help you win back your time and lead to more peaceful, prosperous and purposeful societies. If all this sounds too good to be true... well this conversation is for you.

Muhammed is Chief Investment Officer at Noia Capital, Board Member at Dubai Chambers and Co-founder & President at EverGive. He combines years of experience at the highest level of the investment management industry with a proactive approach to philanthropy and a faithful concern for the future of humanity, which he believes will depend in large part on the reestablishment of sound money.

Tarek also shared his thoughts on whether there is any hope of saving ourselves from the sinking ship in which we all find ourselves.

#29 - WHY Muslim identity is IRRELEVANT & HOW Muslim strategy is REDUNDANT 13 Nov 202501:49:13

One of my central convictions and most contrarian ideas is that the ways in which we use the terms "Islam" and "Muslim" - not to mention their various transliterated derivatives such as "Islamic" and "non-Muslim" - are inauthentic, inaccurate, misleading and divisive.

The identity and strategy of what is supposed to be a deeply faithful and universally impactful community has instead become irrelevant, redundant and insular, in large part because of the misunderstanding and misuse of these foundational terms.

I realise that these are significant claims with massive potential consequences for the way believers understand, organise and represent themselves.

But, based on my learning and experiences over the last decade in particular, I have come to see them as almost indisputable. I only say 'almost' because I always try to keep an open mind, no matter the level of my conviction. So I welcome critical responses, as long as they're shared... in good faith.

With thanks to my highly capable guest host Ali Siddiqui, this episode is a thorough exploration of the above ideas. There is always a lot more to say, which will perhaps follow in due course, if God wills. But if you can't wait...

That’s the view of my guest Mohammed Nizami, founder of the New School for Abrahamic Restoration. The aim of the New School is to revive a way of life rooted in God’s law, aligned with the created order, and capable of renewing both soul and society.

Mohammed has completed a range of undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Al-Azhar, LSE, UCL and Warwick. He has expertise and experience in the fields of theology, covenantal law, politics, education and business administration.

#26 - Fahad Tasleem: Natural BEAUTY Is Our Greatest Defence Against The THREAT Of Tech24 Oct 202501:39:40

Technological developments are reshaping our environments - and therefore our minds and souls - at an alarming rate. In this chat, Fahad Tasleem wonderfully makes the case for why a return to natural beauty is vital to preserve our connection with the divine.

This conversation was originally intended to be a private one for Fahad Tasleem and I to get to know each other for the very first time. He kindly allowed it to be recorded, and afterwards we both agreed it was interesting enough to be released into the public domain as an In Good Faith episode!

Fahad is a research fellow and instructor at The Sapience Institute, where his research focuses on Islamic Theo-Philosophy & Spirituality. He is the author of the book, "No Doubt: Finding Certainty in an Age of Uncertainty". He is also at the tail end of his PhD in Islamic Thought.

In this episode, Taimur Abdaal is back to quiz me about what it means to lead a truly authentic, God-centred life, especially in the context of work. For most of us, work occupies the bulk of our time, attention and energy. Unfortunately, for many of us, it also often ends up being unfulfilling and misaligned with our deepest values and our overall worldview. Can this tension be resolved in a way that is sustainable?
