E064_Investing in Leadership and Safety: The Secret Ingredient to Success13 Mar 202400:39:47

Send us a text

Welcome to this week's podcast episode, where we examine the pivotal role of leadership and safety and its impact on organisational success.

Is it merely a tick-box exercise, or could it be the secret ingredient to unlocking your company's potential?

Return on investment (ROI) is a critical consideration in today's business landscape. We often focus on profitability and sustainability, but quantifying the costs of neglecting certain areas, especially safety, can be challenging.

We refer back to our podcast episode 035, where we explored the concept of "blue money" – the funds that could prevent losses – versus "red money" – the costs incurred when something goes wrong.

Drawing from real-life examples such as the BP Trans Ocean Deepwater Horizon Disaster, we examine the dire consequences of neglecting safety. With 11 fatalities and billions in cleanup efforts, this catastrophe underscores the importance of proactive safety measures.

Safety leadership is more than just compliance; it's about creating a culture of safety within the organisation. We discuss the ripple effects of safety investments, from boosting quality and efficiency to enhancing team dynamics and trust.

Quantifying ROI goes beyond numbers.

It involves understanding the human element of safety investments and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. Through case studies like Trimec Transportation's safety culture transformation, we highlight the tangible benefits of prioritising safety.

Our mission is clear: to empower organisations to safeguard their most valuable assets – their people – while ensuring operational and financial resilience.

We offer practical steps to invest in safety leadership, from assessments and expert observations to leadership development programs.

Investing in safety leadership isn't just good practice; it's good business.

Join us as we unlock the safety secret ingredient for long-term success and sustainability.

Key Topics Covered:

  • Understanding the true cost of incidents and accidents
  • Safety leadership as a catalyst for cultural transformation
  • The ripple effect of safety investments
  • Quantifying ROI beyond numbers
  • Practical steps to invest in organisational leadership and safety

Takeaways:

  • Prioritising safety yields positive outcomes and mitigates the dire consequences of neglect.
  • Investing in safety leadership is a strategic move that offers substantial financial returns and a sustainable competitive advantage.
  • Understanding the true cost of incidents and accidents is crucial for proactive safety measures.
  • Continuous improvement and fostering a culture of safety are essential for long-term success and sustainability.

E062_What is your experience with leadership promotion? What help did you receive?14 Feb 202400:29:37

Send us a text

Today and in our upcoming episodes, we'll explore the realities of leadership promotions, especially for those stepping into supervisory roles or advancing to higher leadership positions.

Drawing parallels with the transition to high school, we'll dive into the rollercoaster ride that awaits individuals as they navigate the complexities of leadership. From feeling like top dogs to questioning everything in a matter of months, we'll dissect the challenges and opportunities that come with these promotions.

One significant aspect we'll explore is the impact of leadership on safe operations and the value of understanding oneself and others in fostering inclusive teams.

We'll question the traditional notion of "return on investment" and propose a shift towards "return on engagement" in developing effective safety leaders and supervisors.

Reflecting on personal experiences and anecdotes, we'll uncover the harsh realities of leadership transitions and the importance of early support and guidance. From unexpected promotions to the overwhelming responsibility of managing former peers, we'll share stories of triumphs and tribulations in leadership roles.

We'll also shed light on the alarming statistic of how long it takes for leaders to receive any form of leadership training, sparking conversations about the need for timely support and resources for new supervisors. Additionally, we'll discuss the pitfalls of traditional training approaches and explore alternative methods to ensure knowledge retention and practical application.

Navigating tough conversations, managing workload pressures, and balancing various responsibilities are common challenges supervisors and leaders face. We'll provide insights into effective communication strategies, emotional intelligence, and creating supportive environments for leadership development.

As we embark on this journey, we invite you to join us in exploring these vital topics and helping us shape The Safety Leaders Hub community to support, nurture, and empower leaders at all levels [details on this in the show notes on our website].

E061_Bridging Cultures for Safety (Intercultural Intelligence): Sharing a few examples31 Jan 202400:34:05

Send us a text

Welcome to today's third podcast episode in our enlightening three-part series on Bridging Cultures for Safety.

In our previous episodes, we introduced you to the essential tools we use in our program. First, we explored the Three Colours of Worldview [E059]

1️⃣ Honour <> Shame,
2️⃣ Innocence <> Guilt
3️⃣ Power <> Fear

These perspectives provide unique insights into how we navigate the world and influence our interactions.

Then, we looked into the 12 Dimensions of Culture [E060], covering everything from communication styles and personal growth to accountability and decision-making processes. Understanding these dimensions is crucial, as they shape how we engage with one another.

Our journey today takes us into the challenges of cultural integration and the significance of understanding diverse viewpoints.

We share personal stories of cultural shock and adaptation, emphasising the importance of openness and curiosity when navigating unfamiliar environments.

We also discuss humour's role in breaking cultural barriers in the workplace. While it can be a valuable tool for building rapport, it's crucial to use appropriate humour that respects cultural nuances and avoids misunderstandings.

Our program focuses on fostering an inclusive environment where teams develop their unique culture and language of understanding. We explore exercises like drawing the process of making toast, revealing how cultural differences impact common sense and problem-solving.

Coaching plays a significant role in helping individuals ask the right questions and avoid assumptions. We highlight the importance of asking for what you want, as exemplified by a humorous anecdote about requesting roast potatoes.

We address common challenges in multicultural workplaces, such as negative stereotypes, communication barriers, and resistance to change. We emphasise the need for effective communication and cultural awareness in high-hazard environments.

If you're curious and want to learn more, we invite you to engage in a conversation with us. Our program offers tangible and quick results when people start communicating effectively.

Reach out to us at hello@safetycollaborations.com to explore other cultures and ways of being.

Be open to trying something different and positively impacting your workplace.

E060_Bridging Cultures for Safety (Intercultural Intelligence): 12 Dimensions of Culture24 Jan 202400:41:15

Send us a text

In this episode, we continue the conversation of Bridging Cultures for Safety, unveiling the 12 Dimensions of Culture that shape our worldviews and interactions.

We kick off by revisiting the three primary worldviews:

1️⃣ Honour <> Shame
2️⃣ Innocence <> Guilt
3️⃣ Power <> Fear

which form the basis of our cultural preferences. Our upbringing, education, and life experiences deeply influence these drivers.

Drawing an analogy to a kaleidoscope of colours, we explore how understanding these worldviews allows us to adjust our approach to better connect with people who see the world differently.

The Three Colours of Worldview were discussed in Episode 059, which is a must-listen if you haven't already.

Our journey continues as we address the complexities of teamwork, leadership, and working with diverse colleagues. We emphasise that being different doesn't necessarily mean being difficult but a matter of unique perspectives.

Imagine a team with 15 nationalities among 120 members; it's not just about worldviews but 120 distinct personalities, adding depth to the conversation.

Tools such as DiSC and e-Colours help us to navigate this complexity.

We highlight the value of cultural agility, which extends beyond nationality, food preferences, or dressing styles, encompassing the three colours of worldview.

Introducing the 12 Dimensions of Culture, we provide a glimpse into

1- Growth
2- Relationship
3- Outlook
4- Destiny
5- Context
6- Connecting
7- Expression
8- Decision-Making
9- Planning
10- Communication
11- Accountability
12- Status

These dimensions offer insights into our perspectives on growth, relationships, and much more.

This episode underscores that diversity isn't about uniformity but leveraging differences to achieve shared goals effectively. The 12 Dimensions of Culture help us navigate this diversity, fostering better communication and collaboration.

Remember: These dimensions aren't fixed; people fall along spectrums, which calls for open, meaningful conversations and an appreciation of the richness diversity brings.

E045_Leadership Responsibility: Part 1 of Leadership in High-Risk Industries20 Sep 202300:24:36

Send us a text

Today's episode begins with a captivating scenario: 27 miners trapped underground after an explosion, relying on crossing a thawing ice road for their rescue. We explore the lessons we can learn from this fictional situation and its relevance to leadership challenges.

This scenario was inspired by Nuala's in-flight movie, "The Ice Road," which sparked questions about leadership, responsibility, and safety. This episode kicks off a leadership series following our previous episode, E044, featuring David.

We delve into five key questions:

  1. How do leadership actions and decisions affect safety culture in high-risk industries?
  2. Balancing Profitability and Safety: How can leaders communicate a commitment to safety without compromising profits?
  3. What challenges arise when leadership messages are misinterpreted by the workforce, particularly concerning safety?
  4. Leadership Accountability: Can you share stories of leaders who took ownership when accidents or incidents occurred under their leadership? How did they respond?
  5. The Art of Pondering: How can leaders incorporate pondering into their decision-making process, and what benefits does it offer?

Our discussion underscores the profound responsibility of leadership at all levels, from CEOs to on-site supervisors. It emphasises the need for a balanced approach to safety and profitability, avoiding extreme swings that could lead to disasters. Effective communication is crucial, with leaders prioritising both safety and profitability.

We also emphasise considering the unintended consequences of decisions and learning from successes, not just setbacks. We encourage using scenarios like "The Ice Road" for team bonding and introspection.

This episode calls for a mindset shift where safety and profit are not adversaries but partners that require thoughtful handling. It highlights the importance of creating a culture where employees feel safe to speak up, question decisions, and actively participate in choices—a holistic approach to leadership in high-risk industries.

E040_Crack the 3 Levels of Conversation and Boost Your Communication Skills16 Aug 202300:25:13

Send us a text

Join us this week as we further explore the world of conversation intelligence and the three levels of conversation.  Not all conversations are created equal.

Different conversational types serve different purposes, and understanding them is key.

  2. Positional (Level II): The aim is to influence perspectives, with trust being conditional and power dynamics at play.
  3. Transformational (Level III): In this realm, co-creation and open sharing thrive within a backdrop of high trust.

Choosing the appropriate level depends on context and purpose.

Conversational Intelligence offers a roadmap to master these levels, enhancing relationships, culture, and outcomes. Listen in for deeper insights into effective conversation navigation and the journey toward becoming a skilled conversational leader.

E069_The Essential Elements: How to Create a Culture of Safety17 Jul 202400:35:57

Send us a text

Today we explore the critical importance of a culture of safety in the workplace, featuring insights from our guest, Alla Weinberg, author of "A Culture of Safety."

Alla explains that without a culture of safety, humans literally can't think; operational IQ can drop by 50 points, severely impacting employee engagement, customer satisfaction, and overall revenue.

She highlights the distinction between a safety culture that centres safety as the primary focus and a culture of safety that integrates safety within a broader organisational context.

The discussion examines the biological imperatives of feeling safe, illustrating how emotional and psychological safety is not just a nice-to-have but a fundamental requirement for effective teamwork and innovation.

Alla's approach, grounded in neuroscience and positive psychology, reveals how intentional culture design can create environments where employees feel secure and supported.

We also address the challenges leaders face in integrating emotional intelligence into organisational culture and the transformative potential of prioritising human connection and well-being in the workplace.

By understanding and addressing employees' biological and emotional needs, organisations can develop a culture of safety that supports both individual well-being and collective success.

As Alla Weinberg's insights reveal, the path to a truly safe workplace begins with intentionality and a deep commitment to human connection.

E022_How does micro-learning add value on board an oil rig?12 Apr 202300:26:30

Send us a text

In this podcast episode, the focus is on bite-sized micro-learning and its impact on offshore oil rigs.

Nuala shares a recent experience of running micro-learning sessions on a rig where one of the heads of departments approached her, expressing concern about a team member who was competent but ostracised from the team due to their lack of people skills.

After running a bridging cultures session followed by a team development session, which led to the team having intimate conversations that wouldn't have happened otherwise, the ostracised team member began engaging with the team and felt included, which emphasised the importance of creating a safe space for conversation and asking the right questions to bridge differences between team members.

We discuss the need for flexibility in micro-learning sessions, which should be tailored to meet each team's specific needs, as not all teams require the same type of learning. Observing and identifying what each team needs to achieve their goals is essential.

The success of bite-sized micro-learning sessions on offshore oil rigs relies on creating a safe space for conversation, asking the right questions, and tailoring learning to meet the specific needs of each team.

Look at our new website page, which is all about safety coaching and training on board, which will give you some more background on today's discussion and how we can help you.

E021_The Power of Language and Metaphor in Shaping Your Safety Culture05 Apr 202300:27:42

Send us a text

Co-host: Andrew Burton joins Karin this week instead of Nuala, who is offshore at the time of this recording with limited internet.

Andrew has worked with clients from the energy, construction, finance, legal and healthcare sectors.

Vastly experienced senior manager, recruiter, facilitator, presenter and coach. He has been responsible for the project management, development and delivery of staff development and recruitment programmes in the UK, Europe and Africa. These projects have, in the main, focused on leaders, leadership, culture change and safety.

In this episode, co-hosts Karin and Andrew discuss the importance of safety culture and the role of leaders in creating a positive vibe within their organisation.

They explore how the pandemic forced businesses to pivot their strategies and embrace virtual platforms like Howspace, providing a safe and inclusive space for quieter individuals to participate and engage in group conversations.

The conversation highlights the need for leaders to give permission and respect different opinions, thoughts, and ideas and tap into the workforce's knowledge and wisdom.

By allowing everyone to contribute, organisations can create a co-created and unique culture sustained over time.

Metaphors are a powerful tool for bringing different perspectives and getting people to talk about how things make them feel rather than just what needs to be done. Using a simple four-letter word like 'vibe' can significantly impact how people think and feel about their organisation's safety culture.

The episode concludes with a key takeaway for organisations and leaders: giving space for people to think, learn, and contribute is essential for building psychological safety within a team or organisation.

Leaders should allow everyone to speak out in their way, regardless of their position. By doing so, organisations can create a safety culture that supports the well-being and success of all team members.
