Day 326 - The Inner Knowing27 Mar 202300:00:55

There is so many different perspectives on leadership.

In terms of heart-centered leadership, I honour my connection with everyone.

Thanks for reading How to Master The Art of Heart 💜 ! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.

When I see a leader struggling, I know that there is inner work to be considered:

📌Our life and leadership journey directly contributes to how we treat people and how we choose to lead people.

📌Self-acceptance is foundational for any one of us to lead.

📌Holding our head up high.

📌No allowance for ego to show up in our behaviour.

📌Strength to stand on both feet.

📌Possibility to showcase imperfection.

A business cannot be lead or scaled if the leader has not completed the inner work to be fully present or show up as their best self.

What’s in your playbook?

Episode 227: The COO Mindset: Learning to Lead with Heart with Rod Anderson 24 Mar 202300:42:06

Want to become more heart-centered? We invite you to join us on Deb’s Dailies (daily blog and newsletter), a daily reflection on living and loving life as a heart-centered leader.

Rod Anderson is a Chief Operations Officer in the giftware and apparel space. On the surface it may not seem like 30 years of experience in Automotive parts manufacturing, power transformers, and electric heat appliances would make someone a good fit for the world of seasonal gifts and female fashion but below the surface is a journey that has made Giftcraft Ltd. the perfect place for Mr. Anderson to be the right COO at the right time.

The journey started in 1991 at a small GTA-based Tier 1 automotive components manufacturer. While there, his Mechanical Engineering background allowed him to transition into various roles during a period when the company’s revenue grew organically by over 50x under private ownership. Growing a business rapidly and organically meant wearing many hats, developing many talented people, and being willing to take on any assignment while learning and doing at the same time. After serving in multiple roles, transforming parts of the business, and playing a key role in the sale of the business twice to private equity investors, it was time to take 18 years of experiences and find out if they were transferrable.

In 2009 Canduct Industries was a small niche power transformer business started in the early 90s by an entrepreneur on the strength of a single product. The owner had grown the business organically based on his technical expertise but no longer had the ability to continue growing his business. Rod was recruited by the owner to build and execute a growth strategy that would allow the owner to be hands-off except for technical input. Over the next 10 years, the business grew by 4x, acquired 3 other businesses in the sector, and reorganized into 2 product-focused divisions.

Rod joined Glen Dimplex Americas in 2019 where sales growth was already underway but the organization was struggling to execute at the Operations level. Rod spent 3 years with Glen Dimplex re-organizing the supply chain, building a more efficient distribution network, assuming control of the Product Engineering process, and expanding domestic manufacturing capacity. Although there was more to do, Rod Anderson the builder realized that the ideal place for his skills was in small to medium-sized enterprises struggling to break through the growth ceiling.

In 2022 Rod was recruited by Giftcraft Inc., a wholesale consumer products business that had recently been sold by the founding family to private equity investors. The newly added CEO was looking for a COO with a very specific skill set. One with experience in rapid growth environments, M&A experience on both sides of the table, someone that could design and implement business operating systems, develop people, and drive efficiencies. One year in, the journey is already an exciting one and a very eye-opening experience.

Episode 218: Finding Zen with Ginny Whitelaw20 Jan 202300:30:01

Want to become more heart-centered? We invite you to join us on Deb’s Dailies (daily blog and newsletter), a daily reflection on living and loving life as a heart-centered leader.

From her first science job working in a high energy physics lab to learning how to work with energy in Aikido and Zen training, to her doctoral research in biophysics, Ginny Whitelaw has had a passion for bringing energy, mind, and body together.

When she was a senior leader at NASA in charge of integrating the Space Station Program, she took several leadership courses, but was dissatisfied that their “head-only” approach ignored the body where enduring change occurs.

It became clear that integrating science and the physical, energetic practices from the dojo into leadership development was her work to do. For more than 25 years, she has taught and coached whole leaders in top companies all over the world.

But it wasn’t until she founded the Institute for Zen Leadership in 2012 that she saw how much further she could take a self-selected group of leaders over the course of even a long weekend.

How fulfilling to lift the wings of people already committed to making a positive difference! She’d found her life’s work.

Ginny Jiko Whitelaw Roshi is a Zen priest, teacher, and writer. She is the author of four books, including The Zen Leader and award-winning, Resonate: Zen and the Way of Making a Difference.

Together with her psychologist husband, Mark Kiefaber, she developed the FEBI®, which measures four energy patterns in the nervous system that link mind, body, and behaviors, giving a view into the whole person that called her into this field from the start.

She loves the stillness of meditation, the vibrancy of dance, and the feeling of being on the water and digging in the dirt.

Want to become more heart-centered? We invite you to join us on Deb’s Dailies (daily blog and newsletter), a daily reflection on living and loving life as a heart-centered leader.

Dr. Mary Jo Burchard is a change leadership coach and consultant currently living in Virgian Beach, VA. MJ’s journey started in higher ed, teaching organizational leadership.

During that time, she and her husband adopted a little boy from Ukraine, whose childhood involved more surgeries than grades. This experience shaped her understanding of what impact belonging has on being able to tell the truth about who we are, what we need, and the power of caring deeply enough about people to accept them fully as they are.

Her doctoral work involved the impact of high-octane altruistic leaders who are impacted by unprocessed trauma. She noticed that these kinds of people tend to pour everything into their role and let the rest of their personhood become dormant.

She likes to tell the leaders she coaches to “AirDrop her into the messy” and let’s work on being humane as possible while we walk through non-negotiable tough things.

Want to become more heart-centered? We invite you to join us on Deb’s Dailies (daily blog and newsletter), a daily reflection on living and loving life as a heart-centered leader.

Change can be scary. Or it can be an opportunity. The enlightened leader capitalizes on opportunities in a way that serves humanity. Susan Drumm is a CEO and Leadership Coach whose mission is to help visionary leaders find their path to Enlightened Leadership – their unique leadership growth path and the blind spots that could get in the way.

Sometimes, that means making a radical, necessary change that others may view as “crazy.”

For Susan, this moment of radical change happened at age 30, when she decided to take a hiatus from her corporate career to get a Master’s degree in acting from the London School of Music and Dramatic Arts.

It turned out to be one of the best career moves she ever made because it gave her the tools to help leaders make a meaningful difference in the world, using music of course!

Later she wrote the bestseller, The Leader’s Playlist: Unleash the Power of Music and Neuroscience to Transform Your Leadership and Your Life, in which she unveils a groundbreaking process that outlines how our childhood wounds affect leadership and how music can heal those wounds.

In this solo episode, host Deb Crowe discusses the importance of holding space for others. November has been hard for many people. It’s more important than ever that we prioritize our physical and mental well-being.

Sometimes you just need to vent out your feelings without fear of negative consequences.

Sometimes you just need to not respond, just listen and make space for the other person to express themselves.

Sometimes you just need to prioritize yourself and enforce your boundaries.

Boundaries can make your inner circle smaller, and that is not an anti-social or selfish thing.

Want to become more heart-centered? We invite you to join us on Deb’s Dailies (daily blog and newsletter), a daily reflection of living and loving life as a heart-centered leader.

Dr. Toby Travis is the founder of TrustED, a framework for business, organization, and school improvement focused on developing trusted leaders.

In addition, he is an Executive Consultant with the Global School Consulting Group, an Adjunct Professor for the International Graduate Program of Educators for the State University of New York College at Buffalo, and an experienced teacher and school administrator, currently serving as the Superintendent of the Village Christian Academy in Fayetteville, NC.

Toby has a story of working in a highly dysfunctional and toxic environment, and through the implementation of intentional action steps, the organization experienced its most thriving and peak years of mission-fulfillment while also experiencing a sense of community well-being.

According to decades of research, trusted leadership is the number one indicator of successful businesses, organizations, and schools. Yet, very few businesses, organizations, or schools intentionally invest in developing trust in their leaders as a means to drive mission fulfillment.

Dr. Travis has developed resources for assessing the trust level of leaders. The data from the leadership assessment is utilized to inform individualized professional development action plans and customized training grounded in research-validated and practice-based methods, which, when implemented, increase the level of trust in leaders - and measurable business, organization, or school improvement.

As a guest speaker, trainer, and consultant, his work has taken him throughout the United States and Europe, South Asia, Central, and South America.

Dr. Travis is the author of the award-winning book “TrustED: The Bridge to School Improvement” - available at Amazon, featured in Forbes, and named “Book of The Month” (November), and nominated for “Book of The Year” (2021) by The Magic Pen.
