I'm With the Band, Man - Episode 042 - Florian Zeh of Rodha / OK Wait / Them Falls02 Jun 202501:44:52

We've finally gone international (well, out of North America) this week when we bring on Florian Zeh, the man behind the four-string for some amazing bands like Rodha, OK Wait, and Them Falls.

We dig into his past and find out what drew him into music, what interested him in playing bass, the Hamburg scene, and so much more. We even discuss sharing vocal duties in Them Falls.

Florian is not only a talented musician that has produced some amazing music, but he's also a real stand-up guy and had some great stories to share. Enjoy this discussion.

The two songs used in this episode are off the sophomore album by OK Wait - "Signal":

I'm With the Band, Man - Episode 041 - Thommy Browne Discusses Chime Hours' Self-Titled EP26 May 202501:17:13

We brought Thommy Browne back to discuss his criminally lesser-known project Chime Hours. This time around, instead of focusing just on the album, we actually dedicate the entire episode to a discussion of all things Chime Hours - find out how they formed, what their writing and recording was like, songs that didn't make the album, dissolution of the band, and so much more.

Thommy once again brought his straightforward and direct approach to the conversation but also brought in some humor and was a wonderful storyteller as he recalled all of the things that made Chime Hours so unique and interesting.

The two songs used in this episode are (obviously) taken from the Chime Hours EP

"The Walking Man"

"Bad Music Is Killing Home Downloading"

For episode 031 we brought on a guest I've "known" (in name only) for close to 30 years but someone I've never actually spoken with until we recorded this episode. Nicky has been an integral part of the Philadelphia scene for a long time and has been in and worked with a ton of influential bands throughout his storied career. He sat down with us to discuss those bands, share stories, and explain how he got involved in the punk scene and what drew him to guitar. As a bonus, we also discuss the recording of "Rip Myself Off (Again) which was recorded during the same session (along with a bunch of other yet-to-be-released songs) and everything that went into the album.

I'm With the Band, Man - Episode 029 EDIT - Neil Sandler of Gauge / Rollo Tomasi / The Sky Corvair03 Mar 202500:59:10

Sticking with the Chicago theme, for episode 029 we bring Neil Sandler onto the show to talk all things him, his band, and Chicago. Neil has some really interesting stories to share across his 30+ years of being a musician across a bunch of bands.

We discuss the other band with the "same name" (spelled differently) and the importance of selecting the right band name, especially in the internet era, to make that name stand out for the purposes of searching.

It's always great to get guests on that played in bands I loved seeing live back in the day and Neil certainly doesn't disappoint.

I'm With the Band, Man - Episode 024 EDIT - Shane Mehling Discusses Great Falls' "Fontanelle"27 Jan 202501:00:51

Bassist virtuoso Shane Mehling returns for the back-half of the conversation where we dig deep into all things "Fontanelle" by Great Falls. Shane discusses how the reintroduction of rules helped shape the album, the creative path he and Demian took to record drums in lieu of a full-time drummer, and how pleased he was (and is) with the end result.

It's unfortunately an album that slipped under my radar but this conversation rectified that in a *HUGE* way! Enjoy. The song in this episode was (obviously) sourced from Fontanelle - "Send To Nothing." Follow Great Falls on Instagram @GreatFallsNoise

We'll be back next week with another banger of an episode.

I'm With the Band, Man - Special Episode 019 - Loremaster Chuck Coffey Discusses Third-Wave Ska23 Dec 202401:52:30

As we get ready to close out the year, here's a special episode of "I'm With the Band, Man" where we bring back Chuck Coffey not as just a musician discussing his own bands (although there is certainly a healthy helping of discussion for his time in Mail Order Children) but as a source of all knowledge. Ska has always been one of those genres that I was exposed to because it was tangential and punk-adjacent but I never gave it its due nor did I ever delve deep into its rich history. Thankfully, Chuck is here to change all that and while we focus mainly on ska's "third-wave," we also dig into its roots and how the waves progressed. As any long-time listener can expect, we do go off-track and bounce around a bit in this conversation, but I think after listening you'll walk away if not with a newfound respect for ska as a type of music, at least a deeper understanding of why its something that so many people cherish and hold dear and why the emerging fourth-wave is still going strong and how it remains a vibrant scene. It is always a treat to find a reason to get Chuck on the show to talk so we're privileged to get him back on and just talk shop for awhile. We sincerely hope you check out this unique episode. This is an album you should immediately check out if you're not intimately familiar and then listen as Damien discusses how it all came together.

I'm With the Band, Man - Episode 015 - Damien Wendel of MAIDA25 Nov 202401:26:51

We sit down with Damien Wendel of Maida to discuss all things music. We find out how he got into drums, the "fifth" member of Maida that helped with the home recording of "Remove the Funeral Attire" that resulted in an album that sounded like it was recorded in a studio, and so much more. As a consummate drumming professional (our first on the show!) Damien brings unique insight and experiences to the conversation. Enjoy!

I'm With the Band, Man - Episode 014 - Demian Johnston - Playing Enemy - "I Was Your City" Deep Dive18 Nov 202402:18:15

https://www.patreon.com/demianjohnstonhttps://www.instagram.com/greatfallsnoise/https://greatfalls.bandcamp.com/ Part two of our conversation with Demian goes into minute detail about the Playing Enemy "I Was Your City" - we talk about how close he was to breaking up with Seattle and moving to New York, the two women that influenced the songwriting (and Demian's relative headspace) of the album. We discuss the release issues (going on the road without the CDs in hand) that plagued their tour and their soft break-up. Demian's stories are insightful and intelligent and you'll come away with a new understanding for a criminally underrated album. Enjoy!

I'm With the Band, Man - Episode 038 - Louis-Charles Berthiaume of Dead Alright / Never Hit Again05 May 202501:16:07

Our second Canadian on the show but our first from that mysterious, French-speaking province of Québec, Louis-Charles comes on the show to talk about punk rock changed his life and turned him into a lifelong musician.

We discuss how Louis-Charles is essentially a one-man band and the pros and cons of working collaboratively with other musicians in a room compared to the creative process on his own.

In what is sure to be a theme on the show, we also discuss the financial complexities of touring in the United States while also recognizing the strong influence of American music being exported into other countries.

Louis-Charles had some great stories and, as always, made this episode amazing and a must-listen.

The two songs used in this episode are:

Brand New Lungs - "Dirty Streets" from the LP Like Wildfire

Dead Alright - "Groundhog Day" from the LP Dancing Through the End Of Days

I'm With the Band, Man - Episode 012 - Matt Schmitz of FORMER THIEVES Part 204 Nov 202401:35:37

This is a solo episode where Matt sits down with Eric to discuss all things Former Thieves' "The Language That We Speak." We talk about Former Thieves running out of the gates on this album, the reception it was getting for live shows, and what the future may have (might still?) had in store for future music. Definitely worth a listen!

I'm With the Band, Man - Episode 011 - Matt Schmitz of FORMER THIEVES28 Oct 202402:08:26

This is a solo episode where Matt sits down with Eric to discuss his musical journey from the scene elders in Iowa sharing the history and the ethics with him up through his life after Former Thieves. We discuss all sorts of interesting facts like soundproofing the practice space with disposed mattress cushions, Matt leaving Iowa after the band broke up, and his eventual return to the Midwest. We chart the musical direction the band would have gone on had Former Thieves not broken up (spoiler alert - they would've gone heavier) and his fond memories of his time in the band. Matt was a great conversationalist and you won't believe where his musical journey has taken him in his life right up to where he is now.

I'm With the Band, Man - Episode 010 - Adam D'Zurilla of Salem's - "Love It Or Leave Me"21 Oct 202402:11:48

Nightjacket has an upcoming single release show for "My Only Heart" December 12 at Gold Diggers in Los Angeles. It will be released via Sonic Unyon Records. And the best news EVER!!!!! - Salem will be releasing a new song in early 2025 - Adam wrote the song and collaborated with two other Salem members - Jeremy Robertson and David Miller. I am so stoked to hear that when it comes out. Sit back and enjoy our deep dive with Adam D'Zurilla as we discuss everything that went into late-stage As Friends Rust, the evolution into Salem, and the six songs that were recorded that became their only release. You can hear Adam lament that his favorite song "Amphetamine Crush" was only available on the European edition, some of the more interesting early production decisions like throwing in some random ball-squeezing screams, and how living in the shadow of As Friends Rust created certain expectations for Salem when touring. As you can expect with Adam, he's open and honest and willing to share a ton of stories. Listening to this will change the way you appreciate Salem, we guarantee.

I'm With the Band, Man - Episode 009 - Adam D'Zurilla of Salem / Nightjacket / Harvard & Stone14 Oct 202402:54:12

https://www.instagram.com/harvardandstone/ https://www.instagram.com/nightjacketsound/ You won't want to miss our interview with Adam D'Zurilla as we talk about everything from As Friends Rust to current the state of live music. Adam shared with us his reflection of being in As Friends Rust coming in to replace Damien Moyal on vocals covering an interesting chapter in that band's career. We go in depth on Salem and what Adam did post Salem going in a different musical direction with Nightjacket. Adam is a big baseball fan so we go over his love of the Dodgers with some fun discussion of the Chicago baseball teams. Adam also shares a refreshing perspective on the live music scene as he manages a venue called Harvest and Stone with a long discussion on how smaller independent bands can survive in today's environment. We really enjoyed his honest and candid opinion on all topics, and we believe you will too when you catch part one of our discussion with Adam D'Zurilla.

I'm With the Band, Man - Special Episode 037 - Chuck Coffey and Mike Taylor - Alt-Country/Americana28 Apr 202501:17:39

Chuck and I had so much fun time we did a special episode we decided to make it a thing. The plan is to do ~4 a year around holidays so consider this to be the "Easter" episode. For this episode, Chuck brought on his good buddy Mike Taylor of Hooper to help with the conversation.

This was a unique conversation for me because right up until about an hour before I hit record I was thinking I had absolutely no frame of reference to talk about alt-country or Americana but as the conversation unfolded, I realized I actually liked quite a bit.

These episodes are always fun because for me they're kind of edutainment - I'm learning new and exciting things while talking with some of my favorite people. It's a classic win/win. If you're either like me and you're always curious about scene-adjacent music or if you're already a fan and are looking to hear people riff about the music, check this one out.

It is always a treat to find a reason to get Chuck on the show to talk so we're privileged to get him back on and just talk shop for awhile. We sincerely hope you check out this unique episode.

I asked both Chuck and Mike to pick one song they felt was a good representative of alt-country/Americana and they each came up with:

Old 97's - "Timebomb" off the album Too Far To Care

Lucero - "Little Silver Heart" off their self-titled album Lucero
