Ep 341: Stake advertising banished from Dutch Grand Prix04 Sep 202400:19:46

The recent Dutch Formula 1 Grand Prix has highlighted the regulatory sensitivities of gambling sponsorship displayed in sports.

In the week before the Grand Prix, the Netherlands gambling authority De Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) demanded that Stake.com be removed from the team it sponsors or risk participation.

On today’s episode of iGaming Daily, supported by Optimove, Ted Menmuir, SBC’s Content Director was joined by Ted Orme-Claye and Callum Williams from the Insider Sport team to take a look at the reasons behind this development.

The trio also consider what consequences this could have for gambling operators seeking multi-country sponsorship opportunities, what factors operators need to be aware of when crafting global marketing strategies and if this decision is indicative of the increasing pressure betting companies are facing when it comes to marketing and advertising.

Easter’s four-day break sees the global gambling sector return to the news that Canadian fintech and payments darling Nuvei has been acquired by PE Group Advent International for $6.3bn.

Going private, what will be the ramifications of Nuvei’s takeover be on gambling incumbents? Taking into account the fast rise of a multi-billion enterprise primarily built on servicing the high-risk payment and customer onboarding duties of operators such as Entain, Flutter, DraftKings and bet365.

Ep 233: ESPN suffer risk-free blunder, with Dustin Gouker28 Mar 202400:37:08

When Penn Entertainment offloaded Barstool Sports, the suits at the company inevitably exhaled thinking that the long list of PR gaffes were a thing of the past.

However, this weekend, Rece Davis created a problem of “Can’t Lose Parlay” proportions when his off the cuff remark about wagering on ESPN Bet blew up the internet. Is this just a public snafu or is this a matter that could result in regulatory fines? And, with this gaffe and the major betting scandals erupting out of the MLB and NBA, is the industry doing enough as a response?

We’ll discuss all that and more on today’s episode of iGaming Daily, as SBC Americas Editor, Jessica Welman, is joined by Dustin Gouker, Founder at Closing Line Consulting.

Throughout gaming, online casino games are one of the most popular hobbies around, with people from various generations and professions indulging in what's offered. They truly do stand the test of time.

Ep 215: Part two of a Very British Affair04 Mar 202400:31:49

iGaming Daily, sponsored by Optimove, reviews a consecutive week of breakneck developments concerning UK gambling’s regulatory future.

Attention turns to the Gambling Commission initiating its two-tier pilot scheme to test affordability checks on gambling accounts – which UK Racing states must be guaranteed as a failed system will have the biggest impact on the heritage sport.

Under the spotlight the Gambling Commission delivered the first data-sets of its new survey methodologies measuring gambling-prevelance

February concluded with the BGC’s annual general meeting, providing the perspective of key political actors on delivering-change to future-proof gambling – in which UK gambling was warned of its wider duties beyond affordability checks.

Ep 330: bet365 scores “historic” UEFA Champions League sponsorship deal20 Aug 202400:21:31

UK-based gambling company, bet365, has just become the first ever sports betting brand to sponsor the UEFA Champions League tournament.

From the details known so far, the three-year deal covers the men’s competition and is well-positioned to bring net commercial positives for the biggest European football event on the calendar, and to a wider extent football in general.

On today’s episode of iGaming Daily, supported by Optimove, SBC News’ Senior Journalist, Viktor Kayed, is joined by his fellow Senior Journalist, Kieran O’Connor, and SBC’s Project Director, Martyn Elliott, to discuss the announcement and what this means for bet365 and UEFA.

The trio discuss the importance of the move for European football, how the sponsorship fits into a wider crackdown on sports betting advertisements across the continent and whether UEFA should do more to promote gambling harm prevention in the wake of the deal.

They also look back on Betano’s sponsorship of this summer's recently concluded European Championships and the criticism that UEFA faced from several NGOs over its failure to “address the issue of problem gambling”.

Joined by Media Manager Charlie Horner, iGaming Daily digs into where we're at in Georgia, how this compares to last year's progress, and what is holding the Southern state back from regulating. Jess and Charlie also get into some of the finer points of the Georgia State legislature.

The UK and the Netherlands betting industries have a lot on their plate regarding payments at the moment, as policymakers in both countries prepare to initiate finance risk checks as an essential part of the customer journey.

These are not the only countries where we’ve seen significant regulatory developments however, as this week the Financial Action Task Force removed four countries from its ‘grey list’ of countries with strategic deficiencies in their anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing frameworks.

This will be todays topic on iGaming Daily, sponsored by Optimove, as Payment Expert's Callum Williams is joined by his colleague on Payment Expert, Editor Ted Orme-Claye and SBC News', Viktor Kayed to discuss just why grey matters.

Yet as UK Gambling nears its Spring resolutions, Parliament will debate demands to abandon financial risk checks deemed untenable for UK racing and intrusive on recreational customers.

In the second half of the podcast, Lu and Fer chat about some major recent updates in Peru, as the Government seeks a new President to lead the General Directorate of Casino Games and Slot Machines (DGJCMT), following the removal of incumbent Eduardo Sevilla Echevarría, whose tenure was terminated yesterday by MINCETUR, Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism.

Ep 208: Wynners and DFS Losers22 Feb 202400:26:27

Jessica Welman returned from her Carribean cruise to a tidal wave of news in the industry, and hops into the iGaming Daily hosting chair to discuss as much of it as possible with SBC Media Manager Charlie Horner.

Firstly, the month of February has not been kind to the daily fantasy sports industry, as the hits just kept coming for the likes of PrizePicks, Underdog, and others offering DFS+ content. Arkansas, Florida, and now Massachusetts have reached out to the operators to let them know they believe they are operating illegally in the state. What does this mean for the future of the vertical?

Plus, what of Wynn resorts? One of the crown jewels of land-based casinos, but the company has all but washed its hands of the digital division. What happened to the Wynn Digital assets and why did this brand never catch on?

Jess and Charlie tackle these two topics and a whole lot more as iGaming Daily, sponsored by Optimove, once again turns its attention to the US industry.

Ep 205: Swedish & German Cold Cuts19 Feb 202400:26:45

The closing days of February will see Sweden's Riksdag begin its review of Swedish gambling taxes, in which the Budget of 2024 has proposed to increase gambling’s base tax from 18-to-22% of income.

Following a year of costly compliance adjustments, imposed on Sweden’s Gambling Act - Licensed operators believe that they have been left in the cold as a tax increase threatens to disrupt Swedish gambling once more.

Meanwhile in Germany, sports betting trade association Deutscher Sportwettenverband (DSWV) has called on the Bundeslander to support its calls for the “realignment of Interstate online gambling laws in 2024”.

The trade body reiterates its warning to Bunderlander that the Interstate market faces a 50% exposure to the blackmarket, and that deficiencies will be exposed this summer as Germany hosts the UEFA Euro 2024 championships… However, is anybody listening?

Ep 203: DraftKings lawsuit & Betsson's CEO offers 2023 insight15 Feb 202400:25:44

SBC Americas has been back on the litigation beat in recent weeks after a case between a former employer and employee came to light. DraftKings sued its former SVP of Growth Michael Hermalyn after accusing him of plotting to steal company secrets and move over to rival operator Fanatics, just days before Super Bowl 58 - the biggest betting day in the US calendar.

Hermalyn denied these claims and the Massachusetts District Court ruled that he can work for Fanatics, but he is prohibited from using DraftKings information and intel.

But this case raises questions about non-compete clauses in contracts and how sportsbooks can protect themselves from competitors taking their staff.

And this will be the first half of today’s episode of iGaming Daily, sponsored by Optimove, where James Ross takes the helm while SBC Americas' Editor, Jessica Welman, enjoys here much deserved cruise, and is joined by Charlie Horner.

Then in the second half we’ll hear from SBC New’s Viktor Kayed who sat down with Betsson’s CEO, Pontus Lindwall, to go through the firm’s latest financial results.

This weekend saw the conclusion of three different tournaments on three different continents - in North America, the NFL season came to an end with the Super Bowl, an ocean away AFCON gripped African audiences, and in the Middle East the Asian Cup final saw Qatar claim the trophy.
