Last week we took a look at home birth together. Today, we’ll look at hospital birth together. Not much more to say than that, other than to say if you haven’t listened to episode 95 yet, go do that first, then come back and listen to this episode so you can get the background. As a midwife who has worked in the hospital and out of the hospital to attend births, and earlier as a labor & delivery (L&D) nurse who helped women with birth in the hospital for many years, I've seen both sides of this picture first hand and they are certainly not the same. There are really a very few women who truly need the interventions that take place every day to every women in the hospital setting. Most women can safely give birth out of the hospital and have beautiful, physiologic birth with no complications and no need for intervention.

Perineal tears (aka perineal lacerations) seem pretty scary, but the best way to deal with fear is by getting the information so you can think about it more rationally. This episode will look at things like routine STD testing (specifically syphilis testing which is called RPR and TPPA), routine gestational diabetes testing, routine ultrasounds, and routine urinalysis tests which can find GBS and cause you to be called GBS positive long before birth is near. Limiting beliefs about birth can completely change your ability to have a successful natural birth God's way, so in this episode we dig into a couple examples of limiting beliefs. We look at God's perfect design and then we look at how we can undermine that design with our choices when we choose not to work with and support God's way.

There is no guarantee because we live in a fallen world and we often have to overcome a lot of history and a lifetime of choices that might make our walk harder, but these things are godly ways to give yourself the best chance to reclaim the JOY of your postpartum time with your newborn baby in a way that gives honor to God and puts God and your family first!

SHOW NOTES Today's episode is part one of a two-part interview with Anna Espinoza. Anna recently gave birth vaginally to twins at term in an out-of-hospital setting after being advised to have a c-section at 32 weeks. This interview tells the story of her pregnancy and birth. It is an empowering story of what can happen when you do your own research and make your own empowered decisions instead of falling into the trap of the medicalized maternity system. Not all advice is bad, but a lot is, and in this case, Anna and her husband's courage saved their babies from an unnecessary premature birth and saved Anna from an unnecessary cesarean.

Anna recently gave birth vaginally to twins at term in an out-of-hospital setting after being advised to have a c-section at 32 weeks. This interview tells the story of her pregnancy and birth. It is an empowering story of what can happen when you do your own research and make your own empowered decisions instead of falling into the trap of the medicalized maternity system. Not all advice is bad, but a lot is, and in this case, Anna and her husband's courage saved their babies from an unnecessary premature birth and saved Anna from an unnecessary cesarean.

So you tell your doctor that you want to decline something they routinely recommend and they ask you for a study to back up why you're making that choice. Here's my question -- since when do we need a study to back up sticking with what's normal?? God made women to give birth uninterrupted and without intervention. That is the way it has been since the beginning of time. Rather than require us to present some study to support our decision to do the way things have been done since the beginning, why don't they present a study justifying why it is OK to depart from normal? Studies often carry all kinds of bias and conflicts of interest. You have to be very skilled and have a lot of time on your hands to weed through the details of studies to see if they are even worth the paper they're printed on. Yet we have thousands of years of evidence supported by the evidence of God's design to back up doing things His way. Today we're going to talk about that.
