S04 E30 - DAY 00… The Road To Mizen28 juin 202600:21:52

DAY 00… THE ROAD TO MIZEN

Today is not a running day.

Today is the chaos before the chaos.

Cars packed. Kit everywhere. Food boxes loaded. Chargers hopefully remembered. First aid packed like we are opening a small pharmacy. Coffee ready. Nerves very much kicking in.

We are making our way to Mizen Head, the very bottom of Ireland, where this whole ridiculous, beautiful adventure begins.

Tomorrow we start running from Mizen to Malin.

Around 350 miles. Two runners with MS. One massive challenge. A Guinness World Record attempt. A nightly podcast. A crew held together by caffeine, kindness and probably Haribo.

This journey is about MS, hope, research, friendship, and showing what can still be possible when life throws something massive at you.

Tonight we sleep near the start line.

Tomorrow… we move.

S04 E34 - Chasing Nick - Sub 3r Or Not Sub 3hr19 mai 202600:22:58

In the final episode of Chasing Nick, Colin takes on the big one: trying to break 3 hours at the Belfast Marathon.

After weeks of structured marathon training, speed work, threshold sessions, long runs, taper madness, pacing talk, race nerves and questionable decisions, it all comes down to race day.

This episode is the final chapter in the sub-3 marathon journey with Nick — the running coach. From the early training blocks to the final attempt, Chasing Nick has followed the highs, doubts, lessons and reality of trying to turn a big running goal into something real.

Did Colin beat 3 hours?

Not quite.

But this episode is about more than a finish time. It’s about what marathon training teaches you, why pacing matters, how quickly a race can change, and why sometimes the real win is coming out the other side ready for even bigger adventures.

In this final farewell episode, we talk about:

  • The Belfast Marathon race-day experience
  • What went right and what went wrong
  • The reality of chasing a sub-3 marathon
  • Pacing, pressure and race execution
  • What Colin learned from structured marathon training
  • Why the journey mattered more than the clock
  • Saying goodbye to Chasing Nick
  • Looking ahead to 100 miles and the 350-mile Mizen to Malin run

A huge thank you to Nick — the running coach for guiding the chaos, giving the advice, and somehow agreeing to help an idiot chase a sub-3 marathon.

This may be the end of Chasing Nick…

…but the idiots are not finished yet.

Next up: 100 miles, then 350 miles across Ireland for MS.

Listen to Idiots Go Running for honest running stories, marathon training chat, ultra running adventures, endurance mistakes, and the ridiculous reality of normal people chasing abnormal goals.

S04 E32 - How To Plan 350-Mile Ultra Running Adventure16 mai 202600:53:57

In this episode of Idiots Go Running, we chat about what actually goes into building a ridiculous endurance event like MS Runs Ireland — our 350-mile run from Mizen Head to Malin Head.

Crewmen, accommodation, sponsors, merch, route planning, fundraising, logistics, panic, spreadsheets… and somehow, Colin has ended up being called the race director.

Which is terrifying for everyone involved.

We talk about the behind-the-scenes work that turns a mad running idea into something that almost looks like a real event.

In this episode, we cover:

  • Building the MS Runs Ireland challenge
  • Planning a 350-mile run across Ireland
  • Multi-day ultra running logistics
  • Crew, support vehicles and accommodation
  • Long-distance running preparation
  • Sponsors, merch and event branding
  • Ultra marathon mindset and planning
  • Fundraising through endurance running
  • Does being organised makes us any less stupid... it does not.

This is another honest, funny and slightly chaotic look behind the scenes as the team gets closer to the start line.

S04 E31 - Taper week, Marathon Day Tips & Advice29 avr. 202600:23:30

This week on Idiots Go Running, it’s the last Chasing Nick episode before Belfast Marathon — and somehow, we’ve made it to taper week without fully falling apart.

In this episode, we chat with Nick — the running coach about the full marathon training process, what a proper training block should look like, and what happens when the hard work is done and the taper begins.

šŸƒā€ā™‚ļø Marathon training blocks

What actually happens during a marathon build, why the weeks are structured the way they are, and how the body adapts over time.

🧠 Taper week explained

What tapering is, why runners suddenly feel weird, tired, heavy, emotional or convinced they’ve lost all fitness overnight.

šŸ What to eat during taper week

How to fuel properly before a marathon, what to avoid, and why this is not the week to suddenly become a brand-new person with brand-new food ideas.

šŸŽ’ Marathon prep

Race kit, pacing, gels, hydration, logistics, nerves, sleep, toilet panic, and all the tiny details that suddenly feel life-or-death three days before race day.

ā˜• Marathon morning breakfast

What to eat before the marathon, when to eat it, how to keep it simple, and why your stomach deserves a calm morning, not a surprise buffet.

This is a proper marathon episode for anyone training for a marathon, chasing a PB, aiming for sub-3, preparing for Belfast Marathon, or just wondering why taper week makes runners act completely unhinged.

S04 E29 - Ireland AM Talks to Ultra Runners!20 avr. 202600:15:14

We recently had the absolute privilege of sitting on the Ireland AM sofa to share our story.

When you are told a wheelchair could be in your future, it changes everything. It changes how you see life, how you see time, and how you choose to move forward. For us, it meant lacing up our running shoes, getting out the door, and chasing every mile we could.

In the full audio from our interview, we talk about how a shared Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis connected us from opposite sides of the world and led to one enormous goal — running 350 miles, the full length of Ireland, in a bid to set a Guinness World Record as the fastest team with MS to complete the crossing.

This is more than an ultra endurance challenge. It is about friendship, resilience, hope, and proving that life does not stop after an MS diagnosis. You might have to change your pace, but you do not stop moving.

Every training run, every long run, every sore leg, every early morning, and every brutal mile is carrying us closer to our goal of raising £100,000 to help fund vital MS research and bring us one step closer to a cure.

Whether you are an ultramarathon runner, a marathon runner, someone training for your first 5K, or someone facing a battle of your own, we hope our story reminds you that progress is still progress — and that even the toughest road can be taken one step at a time.

S04 E24 350 Ultra Marathon Prop29 mars 202600:36:22

Nick’s got news. Andrew is tapering. Matt is ignoring the fact he’s injured. And Colin is still being controlled by his coach.

In this episode of Idiots Go Running, the lads are back with more running chat, marathon talk, ultra running nonsense, taper week panic, injury denial, and the kind of coaching dynamics that definitely feel a bit too personal.

Nick brings the latest update, Andrew delivers a mystery book review with almost no useful clues, Matt continues to run like injuries are optional, and Colin remains firmly under the watchful eye of Coach Nick.

Expect sarcasm, endurance running chat, training talk, race prep, recovery excuses, marathon mindset, ultra runner nonsense, and the usual lack of professionalism.

S04 E14 - How to Manage Jet Lag for Ultra Marathons16 fƩvr. 202600:10:49

Expert Help the Idiots — Jet Lag

How do endurance runners survive jet lag?

In this episode of Expert Help the Idiots, we ask one simple question to a line-up of battle-hardened ultra runners and coaches:

How do you beat jet lag without breaking yourself?

The answers range from tactical sleep schedules to "powering through" with sheer grit. Whether it's a 5-hour shift from the US to Ireland or a massive 10-hour jump from California to Greece, these experts prove that sometimes the best plan is just having the stomach to endure it.

From "front-loading" sleep weeks in advance to the controversial strategy of relying on caffeine and a "cold turkey" adjustment, we dive into how the pros handle the disorientation of international racing.

  • The "Front-Loading" Strategy: Why your sleep quality a month before the race matters.

  • The 30-Minute Shift: Gradually adjusting your body clock before you even leave home.

S04 E13 - Nutrition for Endurance Running, Ultra Running Fuel, and Surviving Long Miles11 fƩvr. 202600:41:39

In this episode of Idiots Go Running, Colin, Andrew and Matt are joined by Nick — the running coach to talk all things running nutrition, endurance fuel, and ultra running fuelling strategies.

We get into what actually works on long runs, back-to-back running days, marathon training, and ultra running, including common nutrition mistakes, what to eat before, during and after runs, and how fuelling changes when the miles get really long.

With Colin and Matt both living with Multiple Sclerosis, we also talk about nutrition from a health, recovery and sustainability point of view, not just performance. Expect real experience, honest chat, a few bad decisions, and plenty of lessons learned the hard way.

This episode is part of our journey towards MS Runs Ireland, where we’ll be running 350 miles from Mizen Head to Malin Head to raise money for MS Ireland, MS Runs The US, and MS Society Northern Ireland.

If you’re training for a marathon, ultra, trail race, or just trying to fuel your running better, this one’s for you.

S04 E12 - Runners Pre-Race Breakfast - Listen to the Expert Runners09 fƩvr. 202600:14:16

Expert Help the Idiots — Pre-Race Breakfast

What do endurance runners actually eat before a race?

In this episode of Expert Help the Idiots, we ask one simple question to some very experienced runners and coaches:

What’s your pre-race breakfast?

The answers are… exactly what you’d expect. And also not at all.

From coffee being the clear winner, to tea holding its own, McDonald’s somehow counting as fuel, energy bars making an appearance — and a few absolute maniacs admitting they run on nothing at all.

This isn’t about perfect nutrition plans or Instagram breakfasts. It’s about real routines, honest habits, and what people actually rely on before lining up for long, painful days on the road or trail.

  • Why coffee dominates pre-race routines

  • Simple vs complicated breakfasts

  • Familiar food over ā€œperfectā€ nutrition

  • Why some runners eat very little — or nothing

  • What not to experiment with on race morning

And yes… this explains a lot.

S04 E11 - NI Running Show Live Keynote - How We Accidentally Became Ultra Runners08 fƩvr. 202600:29:25

How We Accidentally Became Ultra Runners

We didn’t plan this.

We didn’t set out to become ultra runners.

Somewhere between saying yes to a few daft ideas and not knowing when to stop, things escalated.

In this episode, Colin Goodman and Andrew Goodman talk honestly about how ordinary running slowly turned into marathons, then ultras, and eventually full-blown endurance madness. The mistakes, the learning curve, the mental battles, and the moments where we realised this was about more than just running.

šŸŽ¤ This talk was recorded live at the NI Running Show, with a brilliant crowd and plenty of laughs along the way.

We chat about:

  • How marathon running quietly turns into ultra running

  • Why mindset matters more than pace in endurance events

  • Learning the hard way through mistakes, fatigue, and doubt

  • Why community, purpose, and resilience keep pulling us back

  • How you don’t need to be elite to take on big running challenges

This isn’t about times or podiums.

It’s about curiosity, grit, and finding out what you’re capable of when things get uncomfortable.

If you’ve ever thought about running further…

or wondered how people accidentally end up doing this stuff —

this one’s for you.

Experts Help the Idiots – What’s the Weirdest Thing That’s Gone Through Your Head on a Run?

Running clears your head…

Or so everyone says.

In this episode of Experts Help the Idiots, we ask a simple question — and get some very unexpected answers:

What’s the weirdest thing that’s ever gone through your head while running?

From completely random thoughts to dark humour, strange daydreams and questionable life ideas, this episode proves that when the legs keep moving, the brain absolutely cannot be trusted.

Along the way, we explore:

• Why your mind wanders on long runs

• What mental fatigue actually feels like

• Why strange thoughts are completely normal

• How distraction and imagination can sometimes help performance

It’s funny.

It’s honest.

And slightly worrying.

S04 E07 - Training Mental Strength - Expert Running Tips12 janv. 202600:17:14

Mental strength.

Every runner talks about it.

Very few actually know how to train it.

In Episode 2 of Experts Help the Idiots, we tackle one of the biggest questions in running:

can mental strength actually be trained — or do you either have it or you don’t?

Joined by experienced coaches and endurance athletes, the idiots explore what happens in your head when running gets tough — and how to stop your brain quitting before your body does.

This episode covers:

  • What mental strength really means when running

  • Why mindset often fails before fitness

  • How mental fatigue shows up in training and races

  • Practical ways to train your mind alongside your body

  • Tools and habits runners can actually use

🧠 The Experts

Whether you’re training for a 5K, marathon or ultra, this episode breaks down how mental strength really works — and yes, according to the experts, it can be trained. Which is useful… because our idiots don’t have much.

S04 E06 - Running Experts - Who are they?05 janv. 202600:31:09

Because enthusiasm alone only gets you so far…

The Expert to Help the Idiots series is a dedicated spin-off from the Idiots Go Running podcast, created to answer the questions every runner asks — usually after they’ve already made the mistake.

As we prepare for our biggest challenge yet — running 350 miles from Mizen Head to Malin Head — we realised something important: we don’t need more motivation… we need smarter guidance.

This series brings in genuine experts to help us (and you) understand the parts of running that really matter — mental strength, recovery, nutrition, fuelling, training structure, injury prevention, and performance habits — all explained in a way that normal runners can actually use.

No jargon.

No ego.

Just honest conversations, practical advice, and the odd reality check when the idiots get carried away.

  • 🧠 Mental strength & mindset for endurance challenges

  • šŸ” Recovery, rest, and staying consistent

  • šŸ Running nutrition, food, fuelling & hydration

  • šŸ‘Ÿ Shoes, gear, tips, tricks & training habits

  • šŸƒā€ā™‚ļø Real-world coaching insights for everyday runners

  • šŸ’¬ Honest conversations — what actually works vs what sounds good online

Each episode features one expert, focused on their area of real-world experience:

We’re not pretending to be experts — we’re learning in public.

These episodes are part of our journey, our mistakes, and our preparation, shared openly so others can learn alongside us.

If running has taught us anything, it’s this:

You don’t need to be perfect — you just need the right help at the right time.

S03 E16 - Idiots Authentic Marathon - Part 0214 mars 202500:25:59

We did it, baby! šŸ‡¬šŸ‡·šŸƒā€ā™‚ļø

We made it from Marathon to Athens—26.2 miles of pure history, sweat, and a few questionable decisions. This was Andrew’s first marathon, and let’s be honest, the real goal was survival (and snacks).

Along the way, we took in the sights: the legendary Athenian soldier, the stunning Bay of Marathon, and—most importantly—secured a top-tier pastry and coffee stop mid-race. Priorities! ā˜•šŸ„

And where did we finish? Only in the Panathenaic Stadium, baby! The birthplace of the modern Olympics, and to top it all off, we bagged an official marathon medal… from the souvenir shop, but that still counts, right? šŸ…

From hitting the wall to race-day magic, finding that extra gear to fueling up with caffeine, this episode is a journey through one of the most iconic marathons in the world—with a full dose of Idiots Go Running chaos.

šŸŽ§ Tune in to hear how it all went down!

Thanks for being part of the journey—now let’s keep running like idiots! šŸƒā€ā™‚ļøšŸ’Ø
