Tracing the evolution of Indiana University basketball from the 1980s to the early 2000s, this narrative explores how the program maintained its core identity through significant transitions. From iconic moments like Keith Smart's championship-winning shot in 1987 to memorable tournament runs in the 1990s and early 2000s, the Hoosiers consistently embodied values of teamwork, discipline, and resilience. The program weathered coaching changes, celebrated talented players like Steve Alford, Calbert Cheney, and Damon Bailey, and achieved remarkable victories, including an unforgettable upset against Duke in 2002. Beyond wins and losses, being a Hoosier represents a deeper commitment to tradition, community, and excellence—a spirit that transcends individual eras and continues to inspire fans and players alike. 1981 Indiana Hoosiers: How Bob Knight's Team Conquered College Basketball Against All Odds10 Apr 202500:14:16

Send us a text

The 1980-1981 Indiana Hoosiers basketball team embodied the ultimate underdog story, overcoming significant challenges to claim the NCAA National Championship. Facing early-season injuries to key players like Randy Whitman and Mike Woodson, the team battled through a nine-loss season with remarkable resilience. Led by sophomore sensation Isaiah Thomas, who was named Final Four Most Outstanding Player, and supported by exceptional talents like Ted Kitchell, the Hoosiers peaked at the right moment. Under Bobby Knight's legendary coaching, they secured their second national title in dramatic fashion, defeating North Carolina in a memorable championship game. This victory occurred against the backdrop of President Reagan's assassination attempt, adding historical significance to their triumph. The team's journey symbolized perseverance, individual brilliance, and collective teamwork, cementing Indiana University's status as a basketball powerhouse and adding another legendary chapter to the program's rich history.

Larry Bird and ISU's Undefeated 1979 Season18 Dec 202400:08:10

Send us a text

1979 marked a pivotal year in basketball history, with Larry Bird leading the Indiana State Sycamores to an undefeated regular season. Before this, Bird remained relatively unknown, despite his exceptional talent. The national broadcast of the Sycamores' game against Wichita State, championed by individuals like Rex Lardner and Al McGuire, brought Bird's skills to the forefront. This game, a resounding victory for Indiana State, solidified their position as the nation's top team and marked the beginning of Bird's legendary career. The rising popularity of college basketball coincided with a decline in the NBA's appeal, possibly due to factors like drug issues and a lack of a dominant team. Bird's captivating journey, from his early days to his national recognition, is a testament to his hard work, resilience, and undeniable talent.

Larry Bird's Silent Season11 Dec 202400:07:48

Send us a text

This week, we take a look at the media frenzy surrounding basketball star Larry Bird during his undefeated season at Indiana State.  Bird's refusal to engage with the media created a unique challenge for Ed McKee, the school's sports information director. McKee was inundated with requests from various outlets, from major publications to niche magazines, all eager to speak with the star player. However, Bird's silence forced McKee into the uncomfortable position of denying these requests.

Indiana State President Richard Landini recognized the extraordinary nature of Bird's talent and supported his decision to avoid the media. Landini understood that individuals with Bird's abilities are rare and deserved respect for their choices. This situation highlights the delicate balance between a player's right to privacy and the public's desire for access to celebrated athletes.

Fred Hunter,  spins a basketball tale unlike any other. In a matter of three years, Hunter went from playing intramural hoops at Michigan to earning a walk-on spot with the Wolverines to grabbing a starting slot to then captaining the 1991 Michigan squad that made its memorable run to the national title game against Duke. Oh, and he did it all while battling spina bifida, a condition that stirred persistent back issues.

There are so many avenues to being involved in the basketball universe. Michigan State's Crushing Defeat and Magic Johnson's Triumph04 Dec 202400:10:15

Send us a text

This podcast episode will discuss the Michigan State Spartans' shocking loss to the Northwestern Wildcats in 1979. The Spartans, a strong team led by Magic Johnson, were expected to easily defeat the struggling Wildcats. However, the Spartans played poorly, shooting a season-low 32.8 percent from the field. They were unable to overcome Northwestern's zone defense and reliance on jump shots. The Wildcats, energized by the home crowd, dominated the second half, leading by as many as 15 points.

This upset victory left the Spartans questioning themselves and their ability to compete. Magic Johnson, despite scoring 26 points, was left feeling sick to his stomach, expressing his disbelief at the team's repeated losses. The team's struggles highlighted their over-reliance on Magic Johnson to generate offense and revealed internal problems stemming from their recent string of losses. The episode will explore the factors that contributed to this unexpected outcome and its impact on the Spartans' season.

Ian Stonebrook and Nick DePaula

Welcome to the 19Nine Podcast. I am Aaron Meyer my co-host today is Josh Barnett one of the Owners of 19Nine. Our guests today are here helping us dive into the basketball apparel culture.

Nick Depaula former Editor-In-Chief and Creative Director at Sole Collector Magazine and now at ESPN as a NBA feature writer.

Let’s go to Josh to start things off.

College Basketball Fashion:

+First REAL pair of basketball kicks you remember getting as a kid?

-Why does that pair stand out?

-Growing up, what pair got away that you still think about?

-Has the industry boomed because of just that?  We all grew up, started making our own money and wanted to get the pairs we didn’t have?

-Is there a next generation for that or will the shoe bubble burst?  Will collabs take the place of retros or have they already?

-What’s the future of the sneaker industry look like to you?

Turning a Hobby/Passion into a Job

-Did you ever think you would be covering shoes/sports fashion as a job?

-Favorite moments.

-Advice to anyone out there that wants to get into this as a job.

Greatest Sneakers of College Basketball Past

-What’s the first pair of shoes that come to mind when we talk college basketball?

-Is there a shoe that you think is very underrated as an all time college basketball or just basketball sneaker?

- Was there ever a watershed moment for sneakers in the college game?  Where the sneakers shined as much as the team wearing them?

- Who are some of the most influential teams when it comes to a history of wearing great shoes?

- Has college basketball ever had a PJ Tucker that people tuned into games just to see what they were wearing that night?

- In your opinion will we ever have another Arizona ‘97 shoe moment in college basketball?

Your Basketball Utopia

-In your personal Hardwood Heaven what shoe has to be worn in there?  The gates open, Dr Naismith greets you as you enter, you immediately look down to see what he is wearing and it’s (fill in the blank with the shoes of your choice)

Joe Hillman | Indiana Hoosiers | 1987 National Championship | The Big Trip05 Apr 202101:08:41

Send us a text

Hardwood Heaven

Our guest today, Joe Hillman, was Robert Montgomery Knight’s first recruit west of the Mississippi, Co-Founder of TrustWealth Strategies. Member of Indiana's last Championship team in 1987 and Endorsed by Coach Knight in his Senior Day Speech as the most valuable player in the Big Ten. I am going to throw it to Josh to kick things off with Joe.

+Tell us your basketball origin story.

-How did you fall in love with the game?

-Any Playground Basketball Stories

-What’s it like being recruited by Bob Knight?

-Why did you end up choosing Indiana and was there anywhere else that you really considered going?

+Indiana 1987

-His recollections of being on the floor for Keith Smart’s shot.

-What people also get wrong about what it was like to be coached by Bob Knight.

-What Joe overheard Bob Knight say after the game that will stick with him forever.

-Why the genius of Bob Knight’s strategy to beat UNLV in the 1987 Final Four actually started five days before the game.

-What Joe overheard Bob Knight say after the game that will stick with him forever.

-In 1987 when Indiana was making their National championship tournament run, a radio station in Evansville Indiana (96 STO) played a song originally written by The Box Tops called “The Letter”. A group from southern Indiana called Furry Head and the Favorites re-wrote the song and titled it “Stevie Shoot a 3-Pointer”. Were you guys aware of the song? And have you heard it? (Cassie’s Question)

+Indiana Career

-The Big Trip were you on that China trip and what was it like? What did you think of the documentary?

- It is halftime of a Big Ten game against Minnesota last month and Indiana is trailing by six.

Coach Bob Knight, not a happy Hoosier, locks his team out of the locker room. It is up to Hillman, a senior with five years’ experience of dealing with such predicaments, to keep the situation under control. Indeed, the eyes of a dozen teammates show that they are counting on him to do so.

-With Mugsy Bogues the Author of Dunbar Boys said he was able to dominate a game with his leadership. Do you feel you had the ability to take over the game with leadership.

-Who was the toughest person to guard during your time in the Big Ten there were some tough dudes at your position. Nick Anderson, Glen Rice, etc

1979: The Season that Ignited a Basketball Revolution27 Nov 202400:10:15

Send us a text

The 1979 college basketball season was a pivotal moment in the sport's history. It was the year that two future NBA legends, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, first faced off in the NCAA championship game.

The game was a clash of styles, with Michigan State's fast-paced, high-flying offense led by Johnson's passing going up against Indiana State's deliberate, disciplined approach anchored by Bird's shooting and rebounding. Michigan State won the game in a thrilling finish, but Bird's performance solidified him as a star.

The 1979 season also marked a seismic shift in college basketball. The Big Ten Conference was finally stepping out of football's shadow, and smaller conferences like the Missouri Valley were now in the spotlight. The NCAA tournament, which was limited to two teams per conference, had incredibly high stakes. This made the atmosphere electric and packed the arenas, creating incredible battles and controversial calls. The 1979 season set the stage for one of the most iconic rivalries in sports history. Johnson and Bird would go on to face each other in the NBA Finals three times, with each player winning two championships. Their rivalry helped to bring the NBA back into the mainstream and paved the way for the sport's massive popularity today.

The latest installment of “Tales from the Bench” on the 19nine podcast features Ryan Ford, a walk-on guard at Providence College during the Friars’ unexpected march to the 1987 Final Four.

In this wide-ranging interview alongside The Chucker, 19nine’s resident historian, Ford discusses the coaching genius of Rick Pitino, a young grad assistant named Jeff Van Gundy, Big East basketball in the 1980s, Providence’s ahead-of-its-time brand of basketball, and more.

The rundown…

  • Thoughts on Big East basketball in 2021, including teams playing in their on-campus arenas with no fans in attendance, which Ford considers “raw” (1:00)
  • Ford’s journey to becoming a walk-on at Providence, including the counsel of future Boston College and Ohio State coach Jim O’Brien, and remembering Pitino from the famed Five Star Basketball Camp (6:00)
  • Why Ford describes Pitino as “magnetizing” (10:00)
  • Billy Donovan’s transformation from averaging 3 points per game as a sophomore to becoming a first-team All-Big East performer as a senior (13:00)
  • What Ford learned while keeping the book during the 1985-86 season, Pitino’s first at Providence (15:00)
  • Expectations for the 1986-87 season and how the debut of the 3-point shot changed everything for the Friars (17:00)
  • Why teammate Dave Kipfer started a fight against Tulsa (25:00)
  • Providence’s star-studded coaching staff, including the future NBA coach Pitino plucked from the high school ranks to be a graduate assistant – hint: it’s Jeff Van Gundy and Ford has thoughts (26:00)
  • A day in the life of the Providence basketball program (30:00)
  • Providence’s hot start to the 1986-87 season and capturing the nation’s attention with its “futuristic” playing style (34:00)
  • Tragedy strikes the Pitino family following the Big East Tournament (38:00)
  • Friar Fever nearly ends against Austin Peay – and why it didn’t (46:00)
  • “We’re doing what?” Pitino’s unorthodox game plan against Georgetown in the Elite Eight (50:00)
  • Why Syracuse was a horrible Final Four matchup for Providence (56:00)
  • The emotions of losing to Syracuse and what Ford took away from that magical season (60:00)
  • Closing out the show with Ford’s thoughts on awesome arenas, opponents on the court and in the stands, why “relentless” is the best word to describe Big East basketball in the 1980s, and, speaking of relentless, watching Billy Donovan prepare for the NBA Draft (65:00)

Categories

Big Picture Context/Can’t Let it Go

  1. Kansas I mean Kansas
    • Talk about Naismith, Phog Allen, Dean Smith, Rupp
    • Talk about How many Final Fours 15, 6 Runner up, 3 Chips
    • Talk about McClendon
  2. Is there a benefit to going to back to back final fours
  3. How much does just getting hot matter in the tournament

How much about winning is just luck because this Kansas Team would win in so many years (tease the top 50)

Set the Scene

  1. Team full of talent at seemingly every position.
  2. Kansas high scoring fast breaking team.
  3. Trying to build up the other team like it could be close like hot shooting fill in the blank
  4. At the start of the game in the intro they make it seem like you wouldn’t know which team you’d want to coach. Kansas seems like the clear choice.

Design Corner/Barnet’s Beat

  1. Talk about why how you chose Kansas and the team/Players you picked
  2. What did this team mean to you
  3. We had Paul Shirley on and he said that the Danny Manning Team was the singular team that meant the most to him growing up. I think because College teams can be like shooting stars and seem fleeting it can really stir emotion in us.
  4. Jordan Headbands love those
  5. Not a great time for shoes. I was trying to figure out if one of the Kansas guys had Foamposites on but I think it was too late for those and too early for Retros

Today’s podcast is part of our ongoing series Tales from the Bench and even though our guest Paul Shirley later started for Iowa State and went on to play overseas and in the NBA I first heard about him from his writing which he did from the Phoenix Suns Bench. His first novel Ball Boy is coming out or may already be out by the time you listen to this. I ordered my copy on Amazon and you should do the same. It is a bit like a reverse Karate Kid and tells a story that has Paul's sense of humor and command for the written word. He also has other books and a Podcast called Stories I Tell on Dates. Oh yeah, you can also get yourself outfitted in Retro Cyclones gear. If you’re new to the Podcast leave us a rating and review on your favorite podcast platform and if you really enjoy it send a link to the show to a friend.
