If You Have a Positive Attitude, You Can Almost Get Through Anything with Chris Riley

We had a wonderful time laughing and speaking with Chris Riley. His happy-go-lucky attitude made for a great interview and a great lesson to both of us.
“If it's raining, I want it to rain harder; if the wind's blowing, I want it to blow harder,” said Riley. “There's nothing that gets me down. I think you have to embrace all the challenges and the time you deal with that gets you ahead on the golf course and in life.”
Having a good attitude helped Riley get through his life, open doors, and conquer golf. He doesn’t focus on the past and instead, spends his energy on the present. That’s something both of us need to work on. We tend to get stuck on past mistakes—like not nailing down a science concept in class or not making three footers on the course.
About the Guest:
Chris Riley is the head golf coach at the University of San Diego. Before coaching and playing professionally, he attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and played on their golf team, where he became the school's first four-time All-American in any sport, leaving the storied program as one of its greatest golfers ever.
While at UNLV, he won four tournaments, placed in the top-20 in 45 of his 59 career college tournaments (76 percent) and was top-five 21 times (36 percent). In his senior year as team captain, Riley helped the Rebels finish second in the nation at the 1996 NCAA Golf Championships in Chattanooga, Tenn.
The San Diego native played on the Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour for 13 years and also participated in many majors, including the U.S. Open and Masters.

We learned a lot about the importance of effort and simply doing your personal best when speaking with Paul Brown. There will be times when we put in all our effort and it will result in an ideal outcome, and there will be times it will result in a not-so-ideal one. However, it’s always better to try and give it your all. As junior golfers, we sometimes lose focus while practicing, but Brown helped us realize the importance of focusing if we want to play our personal best and improve our craft.
Another thing we learned is the difference between being a golf professional and a professional golfer—and the numerous opportunities and accolades that come with them. Brown chose the golf professional side and is a director and coach today, which fills him with joy. It’s nice to know there are different ways to get immersed in the golf world.

Born in Tucson, Arizona, Paul Brown is a director for U.S. Kids in Las Vegas and a certified member of the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA). He directed in the U.S. Kids for 20 years and was a member at the PGA for 25 years. Brown was the formal golf coach at Faith Lutheran Academy in Las Vegas, as well.
Brown attended the University of Arizona and has had a wonderful golf journey, starting in his junior years. Some of his achievements include being the Top Player of the Year in the Colorado River Player’s Association and becoming a golf professional.

Eric Meeks taught us that work ethic can truly take you to extraordinary places. Though he wasn’t the number one player during his junior career, his hard work, confidence, dedication, and discipline turned him into the number 1 ranked amateur in the world and a successful professional. Oh, and the awesome coach we know today, too.
Meeks also taught us that consistency helps you deal with pressure. Whether we want to admit it or not, there is pressure around us during our tournaments because we want to do well and make our parents proud. Consistency in our routines and envisioning have helped us deal with pressure and improve.
About the Guest:
Born in Southern California, Eric Meeks played professionally for 20 years and is currently a golf instructor at the Eric Meeks School of Golf in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Meeks attended Fresno State University and the University of Arizona and has taught many of the top junior golfers across the Western United States.
Throughout his career, Meeks played on the Nationwide Tour (now Korn Ferry Tour), Asian Tour, and South African Tour. He played in the 1989 Masters, British Open, and the 1989 and 2005 U.S. Open, and won the U.S. Amateur in 1988. He was a member of the United States Walker Cup Team and the World Amateur Team.
Meeks is also the father of Loyola Marymount University standout golfer, Cameron Meeks.

Here were two recurring themes during our conversation with Bob May: One, practice. Two, focus. Sure, we practice, but are we practicing enough? Also, are we focusing enough? Are we visualizing and manifesting our desired tournament and playing as if we’re already there? There is always room for improvement, and since speaking to May, we have started treating each practice like our dream tournament.
We also connected with May since our parents don’t play golf either. He inspired us and showed us that not coming from a golf family isn’t an excuse not to succeed. You can always make it big despite not having it in your blood. Like May, golf is something we chose and love to do.

A big takeaway from our conversation with Jason D’Amore is authenticity. If a player doesn't love their sport, their journey will not work out well. So, if you’re going to do something, make sure you love it or you’re wasting your time.
Our parents often ask us “Do you really love golf?” Just like D’Amore, they believe if we don’t love it, we should look for something that brings us joy. However, we truly do.
We also think picturing yourself playing in the future is important; remember, visualization is major—in your pre-shot routine and in staying true to yourself.

Jason D’Amore is currently the head men’s golf coach at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) after playing for the Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour and practicing as a real estate agent. He has accomplished many wins, which include making it to the National College Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament three times in a row, reaching the LMU hall of fame, and playing in the Canada Tour.
Graduating with a degree in Business Administration in 2008, D'Amore played professionally in the Canadian Tour in 2009 and 2010. He then left the tour and was a National Speaker/Education Coordinator for Investor's Business Daily from 2011-15. With Investor's Business Daily he gave presentations on how to invest, helping the company to advance it's customer support structure.

Bob Lasken did just that: share what he’s been through and how he’s gotten through it all, which is moving. Bob Lasken is the Director of Instruction at the Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo, California, and a golf instructor at Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach, California. His time as an instructor earned him a mention on Golf Digest magazine’s list of top California instructors, which he has stayed on since 2009.
The golfer has achieved many accomplishments throughout his career, including winning Junior World at just 14 years old, becoming Player of the Year for Southern California Championship in 1983, winning the National High School Individual Championship in Kentucky in 1984, and going professional in 1988.

Do What You Love and Love What You Do! | Mika Jin

After speaking with Mika Jin, our biggest takeaway was gratitude, gratitude, gratitude. We believe her gratitude and perception of the game have made her the bubbly and vibrant golfer she is today. If you’re grateful for the opportunities golf gives you and always try to “love what you do,” you will go a long way—and that’s been witnessed in her journey.
We also learned a lot about being positive even when we aren’t doing well. Even when the outcome isn’t your ideal one, you have to remember you’re still trying your best. If you’re giving it your all, your best is enough.

Mika Jin is a junior at the woman’s golf team at University of California, Berkeley. Born in Japan, she moved to California at just three years old. The Northern Californian has played for 10 years—and has achieved many admirable accomplishments. Some of these achievements include playing at the U.S. Amateur, qualifying for Four-Ball, and winning the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Tournament twice.
At her sophomore year, Jin led the team in scoring average of 74.0, rounds of par or better (9) and tournaments played (10). Jin finished in fourth place at the Molly Collegiate Invitational at 1-over par and shot a career best 5-under par to finish in a tie for seventh place at the Gunrock Invitational, which is Cal’s best individual round in three seasons. Jin registered two other top-20 finishes, including a tie for 16th at the NCAA Stillwater Regional.

Many focus too much on the outcome, but successful people like Englemann take pleasure in their journey and stay patient. Sadie Englemann is currently a sophomore playing for the woman’s golf team at Stanford University. The Texas native has participated in many incredible events including the Junior Solheim Cup, won the Buick Shanshan AJGA (American Junior Golf Association) Invitational, and took second at the Tournament of Champions. Englemann is two-time WGCA All-American Scholar and Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll in year 2021 and 2022 with scoring average of 73.2. Angelia is a nationally top ranked junior golfer at her junior high year. Angelina is also ranked number one academically among seven hundred students at Clark High School, Nevada. Angelina hopes to play college golf and pursue a career in the medical field or dentistry. Her passion is Neuroscience and Statistics. Angelina has been travelling around the country competing against the best junior golfers in the world since age of seven. She is also the Amazon published author, “I Want to Play College Golf”. Since Year 2021, Angelina and Cameron have donated over $17,000 their book proceeds back to the community for the underserved family and patients who are in need of cancer treatment. Aside from daily golf practices and school, she enjoys listening to music and watching chilling crime shows.
