Ep. 23: Faculty and Talent Experience13 May 202400:42:12

Television shows and movies have a tendency to make faculty life look glamorous. Ask any faculty member, however, and they will fill you in on the challenges of juggling teaching, research, publishing, grant writing, pursuing tenure, etc. Let’s not even talk about those who become department chairs with no people management experience or training. Many feel valued as some of the most important fixtures in higher education but others don’t feel quite so supported. Former tenured professor and current academic leadership coach Jennifer Askey joined “I Wanna Work There!” to fill us in on the life of faculty.

What can you take away from episode 23?

  1. We will get an idea of what a sense of fulfillment and success look like for faculty.
  2. Jennifer will educate us on what faculty want from their employers.
  3. We will learn about a free virtual event to help faculty reach their untapped potential while helping them advocate for employee satisfaction on their respective campuses.

In this special bonus episode of I Wanna Work There, Enrollify host Eddie Francis chats with Jaime Hunt about her LinkedIn post calling attention to the low salary range of a marketing and communications position with very demanding, and maybe even unrealistic, expectations. And it triggered quite the reaction from other LinkedIn users. Key Takeaways:

  • The Challenge of Being a "Marketing Unicorn": Discussion on the unrealistic expectations set for positions requiring a broad set of skills ranging from PR to event management.

Ep. 18: Human-Centered Design and Institutional Success04 Mar 202400:36:36

It has become a theme on “I Wanna Work There!”–higher education is a people business, especially when it comes to faculty and staff. So, what happens when faculty and staff are forced to conform to an institution’s processes and culture? While it seems normal, Erik Rueter sees this as forcing employees to “use a hammer to try to screw something into a wall.” That is why Erik champions human-centered design. Don’t be fooled by what may seem like feel-good language. Erik explains how human-centered design boosts institutional efficiencies, processes and profitability in addition to faculty and staff’s talent experience.

To help your institution with its talent experience efforts, here are this episode’s three takeaways:

  • Understanding of what human-centered design is,
  • How human-centered design can be applied to the complex campus environment, and
  • Ways to implement human-centered design for a great faculty and staff experience.

Ep. 17: The International Employee Experience19 Feb 202400:42:34

If you’re an American working at an American college or university, you’re most likely comfortable with many of life’s events as we know them–football season, Thanksgiving, “Bowl Season,” the holiday break with holiday parties, the big basketball conference and national tournaments, Easter break, baseball, and lots of happy hours in between. But what about your colleagues from outside of the U.S., especially those from the other side of the world with different social and faith practices?

Kinnari “Kin” Sejpal knows what it’s like to live life differently as an international employee. While enjoying her work experience, sometimes it can actually be a little lonely. Kin visited “I Wanna Work There!” to discuss the world of the international employee and how they can be supported.

To boost the talent experience for international employees, here are our three takeaways for this episode:

  • Understand the presence of international employees on your campus,
  • How to be mindful of what international employees’ normal looks like, and

Ep. 14: Diversity Recruiting and ‘Positive Disruption’20 Nov 202300:41:55

Diversity recruiting goes well beyond finding candidates who are simply different. It’s about identifying and hiring talent that will change the trajectory of your college or university in a productive way. Diversity recruiting both uplifts candidates in the minority while broadening the talent in the majority. The “positive disruption” of attracting and retaining diverse talent is what Rory Verrett’s work is all about.

A diversity recruiter and executive coach, Rory visits “I Wanna Work There!” to talk about how he identified the need for diversity recruiting in the executive space, why diversity recruiting is so important to the health of organizations, and why he decided to write his book, “The Pomegranate Principle: The Best Practices in Diversity Recruiting.”

Ep. 13: Succession Planning and Employer Branding06 Nov 202300:34:44

In a LinkedIn post, Emmalee Amthor wrote, “Succession planning is an investment in an organization's future. Here’s why.

“1. Continuity: It ensures the smooth transition of key positions when employees retire, leave, or are promoted, reducing disruptions in workflow.

“2. Talent Development: It identifies and nurtures potential future leaders, fostering their growth within the organization.

“3. Risk Mitigation: Succession planning mitigates the risk of leadership vacuums, helping organizations avoid crises during unexpected departures.

“4. Employee Engagement: It can boost morale and engagement by showing employees that the organization values their development and growth.

“5. Cost Savings: Developing internal talent is often more cost-effective than recruiting externally.

“6. Strategic Alignment: Succession planning aligns leadership development with the organization's strategic goals and long-term vision.”

Not only does Emmalee provide great perspective on the value of succession planning, but she talks about how she developed a passion for employer branding and how she’s using it as a human resources professional on her campus.

Ep. 11: The Need for Culture Cultivators16 Oct 202300:34:19

To boost an employer brand, Brittany King does not believe in hiring for culture-fit. As she wrote on a LinkedIn post, Brittany believes that organizations should seek out what she calls “culture cultivators.” A highly seasoned recruiter who focuses on culture as well as diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, Brittany wrote that culture cultivators prepare an organization for the future, they optimize the organization for growth, and they develop process improvements to remove those elements that inhibit organizational success. In this episode, we broke down where culture cultivation starts, infusing culture cultivation into institutions’ strategic plans, and how to identify culture cultivators who will inspire brand ambassadorship throughout campus.

Presidents affect faculty and staff engagement in many ways. How these campus CEOs communicate with their employees cannot be taken for granted, even at some of the biggest campuses in the nation. That’s where this episode’s guest, Teresa Valerio Parrot, comes in. On this edition of “I Wanna Work There!,” Teresa discusses why communications from the president’s office are so critical.

Ep. 8: The Trouble with Micromanagement28 Aug 202300:32:49

Micromanagement does no favors to employer branding. However, faculty and staff may be willing to be the brand ambassadors of their campuses if their leaders knew how to…dance? There is a practice called followership which is the set of employee behaviors that influence how leaders lead. So, what happens when leaders micromanage?

Sharna Fabiano, a certified leadership coach, uses her experience as an internationally recognized tango artist to help leaders understand how to work productively with their people. As the chair of the International Leadership Association’s Followership Member Community, Sharna helps us understand what followership is, why micromanagement is received so negatively by employees, and how leaders can invite their employees to “the dance floor” to foster more collaborative and productive work environments.

Ep. 7: No More ‘Post and Pray’14 Aug 202300:21:45

Colleges and universities are finding out, the hard way, why they can no longer “post and pray,” that is post job openings and pray that qualified candidates will fill the applicant tracking systems. On this episode, we went straight to a major source to find out what kind of traction higher education job postings are getting. Kevin Varner of HigherEdJobs joined “I Wanna Work There!” to discuss the increase that the website has seen in postings from campuses across the country, how site traffic has changed, and what institutions should do to attract the candidates that they want.

Ep. 6: A Title Does Not a Leader Make01 Aug 202300:27:32

Employee engagement does not happen without effective leadership. Effective leadership, however, doesn’t always come from those with executive authority–the folks with the titles. Without question, great leadership can come from faculty and staff who own their expertise and authority and who have moved the needle on their respective campuses. This episode explores the critical role that leadership development plays in employee engagement through the eyes of Vicki Baker, an economics and management professor who wrote an Inside Higher Ed op-ed called “A Title Does Not a Leader Make.”

Ep. 5: The Delicate Dance of Managing Change17 Jul 202300:33:43

They say that the only thing that is constant is change. How does change affect the employees at an institution, especially when the change is at the top? Higher education, an industry that once upon a time saw presidents and chancellors lead institutions for decades in some cases, is now seeing leadership changes at the top nearly every six years. How does that affect faculty and staff? Robin M.L. Johnson, who is an expert in change management, joined “I Wanna Work There!” to discuss how institutional leaders, faculty and staff can manage major change at their respective institutions by keeping emotional intelligence at the center of the discussion.

Ep. 28: The Problems with Burnout22 Jul 202400:38:02

Burnout has become one of higher education’s worst kept human resources secrets. We only have to go as far as an off-campus conversation to find out that some colleagues who seem to have it all together are probably suffering the worst cases of burnout. On this episode, we will chat with Rebecca Pope-Ruark, a former tenured professor who researches burnout and coaches faculty through their burnout experiences.

In this episode of “I Wanna Work There!” we will:

  1. Hear Rebecca’s burnout story and learn what it is.
  2. Learn how burnout impacts employees’ productivity, particularly on the faculty side.
  3. Get an idea of how colleges and universities can help their faculty and staff manage burnout.

Ep. 4: How a School Attracted ‘Ambitious Builders’03 Jul 202300:25:08

When Suri Duitch arrived at Tulane University to take over as the dean of the School of Continuing Studies, she saw a need to rebrand. Renaming her unit the School of Professional Advancement (SoPA), Suri led an involved process that included collecting internal data, giving her the good, the bad and the ugly about the school. On this episode, we learn that the rebranding process was about more than changing SoPA’s name and look. It was about changing the culture. Suri shares how SoPA attracted “ambitious builders,” the change she saw in SoPA’s job applicants, and how SoPA gained a reputation within Tulane as an “excellent place to work.”

Ep. 2: Higher Ed’s Work Culture05 Jun 202300:41:32

Campus work culture matters. While a college campus can be a place that’s full of life and offers many employees such great things as shared governance, it can also mentally and physically wear its employees down, a serious threat to the employer brand. Kevin McClure has been vocal about the work culture of higher education and offers thoughts about why and how it needs to change.
