How Wild hits trails around the country, exploring the meaning of wilderness. A century ago, the U.S. set aside the first official wilderness. You'll hear stories from rangers, scientists, hikers, environmentalists, and Tribal leaders as they grapple with the realities of wilderness on a changing planet, and whether the concept of "wilderness" has ever really existed.

The American Storytelling collection explores the great outdoors

mardi 9 juin 2026Duration 01:17

Out in the open, beyond the noise of everyday life, the land has a way of revealing us. ‘American Storytelling’ is a collection of podcasts from across the NPR Network, and this summer, we’re presenting a selection of shows that celebrate the great American outdoors, and the deeper stories it tells about who we are.

Introducing the American Storytelling collection

Season 1 · Episode 13

mardi 10 février 2026Duration 01:53

What does it mean to be an American? There’s no one way. At NPR, we think of the American identity as a story - one that's always being rewritten by the people who live it. The American Storytelling collection gathers stories from local stations across the NPR Network - from small town struggles, to natural phenomena, to the intricate histories that build the constantly-evolving tale of our nation. These are our biggest little-known shows. Find them in the American Storytelling channel on Apple Podcasts or on the NPR App.

mardi 13 août 2024Duration 32:00

Untrammeled. No, that's not a typo. We don't mean untrampled.

But in a world where every part of the planet is affected by climate change, how do we decide when to intervene? We're heading off-trail in Sequoia National Park with land managers and environmentalists who are at odds.

Wild Times: Rewriting History in National Parks

Season 1 · Episode 11

vendredi 1 août 2025Duration 13:07

Noticed any changes to signs in your local national park?

An exhibit at California's Muir Woods National Monument was recently edited because of a Trump executive order banning any types of content — like exhibits, signs, books in the gift shop — that "inappropriately disparage" people in American history.

This isn't the first time that a national park exhibit has been affected because of Trump's policies though and park rangers and historians are speaking out.

This interview first aired on KALW's Crosscurrents on July 31, 2025.
