| EP87 RenoVersity Doors Are Open | 01 Jul 2026 | 00:20:41 | |
southplacestudio.com/renoversity I have some exciting news - the doors to RenoVersity are open once again! Over my many years in this reno world, I’ve seen people struggle with renovating in so many ways, and that’s exactly why I created RenoVersity - my clear 5 Pillar step-by-step system that helps you plan, design and deliver your renovation in the right order. So you avoid costly mistakes, overwhelm and constant second-guessing. It's been a little while since the course was last available because, behind the scenes, I've been busy working on a new renovation project of my own: an auction apartment that I completely renovated back to brick and have now rented out above market value. The entire project went from purchase to tenant in just five months using the very same RenoVersity system I teach inside the course. (But that's definitely a story for another podcast episode!) I've also been busy adding some exciting new features, including the On-Demand AI RenoVersity Companion, so you can get answers to your renovation questions whenever you need them, and a Private Audio Series, so you can learn while you're commuting or on the go. RenoVersity is packed with everything I've created and refined while managing real renovation projects over the years: video lessons, planning guides, calculators, templates, cheat sheets and practical resources to help you plan and manage your renovation with confidence. The course is now open for enrolment, and in this episode, I'll walk you through exactly what's included, who it's for, and how it can help you create your dream home. The course is now open for enrolment and inside this episode of the podcast, I talk you through exactly what RenoVersity is all about. ******************* PLEASE CAST YOUR KIND VOTES HERE! ******************* Hi, I’m Tash South — interior designer, renovation consultant, and founder of South Place Studio. I'm doing things a little differently this week. Instead of our usual episode, I've decided to share a special masterclass with you because I think it's one of the most useful lessons I've ever created for homeowners planning a renovation. Most homeowners don't save £40,000 through one big decision. They save it through a series of smart decisions made before the renovation begins. In this masterclass, I share three strategies used on real projects to help homeowners avoid unnecessary costs, reduce expensive mistakes, and make better renovation decisions from the outset. Join me inside this masterclass to learn my 3 Big Strategies on how to save over £40,000 on your home renovation project. In this value-packed class, I’ll show you: Strategies I’ve used before in my 20 years of home renovation experience, using real project examples What to do before hiring your builder or architect This masterclass is for you if you’re planning a renovation or extension and want to feel in control and You want to get it right, without expensive mistakes Knowledge = Confidence = Savings https://www.southplacestudio.com/save40masterclass ******************* PLEASE CAST YOUR KIND VOTES HERE! ******************* Hi, I’m Tash South — interior designer, renovation consultant, and founder of South Place Studio. | EP85 No One Gives You Permission to Belong | 03 Jun 2026 | 00:21:34
In this episode, I reflect on the meaning of belonging in a world that can often feel divided, uncertain and increasingly hostile. As an immigrant, I've been thinking a lot about what it means to feel at home and how fragile that sense of belonging can sometimes be. I explore how our earliest experiences of belonging, or not belonging, shape the way we move through the world and influence what we seek from our homes as adults. When we move countries, cities or go through major life changes, home often becomes something we are trying to recreate rather than simply a place we live. I talk about our deep human need for connection, safety and acceptance, and why creating a home that reflects who we truly are matters more than ever. This is a conversation about identity, home, community and finding your place in the world. Because belonging isn't something someone else gives you. It's something we can create for ourselves through the spaces we live in, the people we welcome in and the life we choose to build. It's not about having the biggest home or the most beautiful one. It's about having a place where you can be fully yourself. ******************* PLEASE CAST YOUR KIND VOTES HERE! ******************* Hi, I’m Tash South — interior designer, renovation consultant, and founder of South Place Studio. | EP84 The Myth Of The Finished Home | 20 May 2026 | 00:16:00
Maybe the goal isn’t to ‘finish’ your home… maybe the goal is to create a foundation that allows it to grow with you. We’ve all had that thought… “Once the renovation is done, everything will finally feel complete.” But I have to say, that moment does come, but also… life evolves. In this episode, I’m unpacking this idea, because the goal isn’t perfection, it’s creating a home that can grow, shift, and evolve with your life and your family needs. If you’re in the middle of a renovation, planning one, or just feeling like your home is never quite “there”… I’m hoping that this episode will shift your perspective. Inside, I chat about The illusion of the finished home and how we’ve been conditioned by before-and-after shows and social media to believe there’s a perfect end point, but real homes just don’t work like that. Homes are living, evolving spaces that need to adapt as your life changes, whether that’s family, work, routines, or unexpected life events. I also cover a very important point that has been at the core of this podcast from day one, the power of getting the base right. Layout, light, flow, and storage are everything. These are the hardest (and most expensive) things to change later, so getting them right from the start is gold. A meaningful home is layered slowly and built over time with pieces that reflect your life, memories, and identity, so join me inside to dive deeper – I’ll see you there. ******************* PLEASE CAST YOUR KIND VOTES HERE! ******************* Hi, I’m Tash South — interior designer, renovation consultant, and founder of South Place Studio. | EP83 Umwelt: Why Your Home Doesn’t Feel Like You Yet | 06 May 2026 | 00:28:15
Have you ever walked into a space and felt instantly calm… while someone else feels completely unsettled? In this episode, I’m introducing you to a concept I’ve recently discovered called Umwelt, and I think it will completely reframe how we think about our homes. I came across the German word, Umwelt in my recent research, and it piqued my interest. I've come across so many different words over the years, in terms of interiors and design, from Danish Hygge to Swedish Legom, to Dutch gezelligheid, to Japanese Ikigai and Wabisabi - all these beautiful words come from all these beautiful different cultures, and what they all point to really, is the same concept of our homes being not just visual, they are emotional, sensory, and deeply personal spaces. The concept of Umwelt comes from a biologist called Jakob von Uexküll, who was fascinated by how different animals, like elephants, bats, dogs and even insects, each experience the world in their own unique way. And I think this is also so relevant when it comes to our homes, because our senses are experiencing our homes and the spaces around us, whether we are conscious of it or not. Umwelt is a German word with no direct English translation, but at its core, it describes something quite powerful, the unique way each of us experiences the world around us. I think the concept of Umwelt connects so beautifully back to home, and back to these deeper conversations I'm starting to have about what home means to us and our sense of home and belonging, and how we experience what is around us. Come and join me inside this episode to explore this more, I chat about how your personality, your past, your sensory preferences, and even your daily habits shape how your home feels to you. | EP82 Guest Episode: Emma Forrest: How to Make a Home That Heals After Life Changes | 22 Apr 2026 | 00:44:05
In this episode, I sit down with the brilliant, Emma Forrest, in her gorgeous, cosy, feminine home. Emma, is a novelist, memoirist and filmmaker, and her work is known for its emotional precision and unflinching honesty, exploring love, identity, grief, and the ways our past shapes who we become. From her early days as a teenage columnist interviewing cultural icons in 90s London, to her deeply personal memoirs and films, Emma has built a body of work that feels both intimate and expansive. Following divorce and a major life shift from Los Angeles back to London, Emma reflects on starting again, and what it’s meant to create a home from scratch, here in her home town, London. In this episode, we explore what home really is, not just the physical space, but the emotional architecture behind it. We talk about our shared childhood experiences of being othered, and how our childhood homes, loss, and movement across countries shape our sense of belonging. Emma shares how living in what felt like the “wrong” house for her, a new build devoid of history and texture, deeply impacted her mental health, and why she feels most at ease in spaces that carry stories. A quiet testament to just how profoundly our surroundings shape us. We also talk about Emma’s deep connection to light and views, and why she will always choose a top-floor, for openness, safety and epic views. As someone who loves entertaining and designing my entire home for that purpose, it was very interesting chatting to Emma about the reasons and need for creating a home for cocooning - a reminder that your home doesn’t have to perform for anyone else, but can simply just function for you alone, and hold you and yours. Towards the end of the episode, Emma shares something quite extraordinary, a deeply personal experience of mentally revisiting her childhood home, moving through it room by room, drawer by drawer, a moment that reminds us that the right home never truly leaves us. Closure doesn’t always arrive when we expect it to, and that sometimes we need to return, even if only in memory. It leaves us with a simple truth, that a well-lived home, much like a well-lived life, is never perfect, it is layered, shaped by change, and sometimes chaos, and filled with traces of everything that came before. This is one of my favourite episodes so far, and I hope it will resonate deeply with anyone drawn to the emotional side of making a home. And the ways identity, belonging, and personal history shape the spaces we can create to make a home that help to heal us after life throws us a curveball. | EP81 Your Home Is Shaping Your Habits. Whether You Realise It Or Not. | 08 Apr 2026 | 00:27:27
What if your home was quietly shaping your habits… without you even realising? In this episode, I explore one of the most powerful ideas from Atomic Habits by James Clear, that our environment plays a huge role in the habits we build (or struggle to maintain). As renovators and homeowners, this is where things get really interesting. Because your home isn’t just a backdrop to your life, It’s an active participant in it. I’ll walk you through how small, intentional design choices can make good habits easier, reduce daily friction, and ultimately help you create a home that truly supports the way you want to live. Whether you want to exercise more, feel calmer, be more productive, or simply make everyday life flow better, this episode will help you start seeing your home in a new way. Inside This Episode
What you see every day influences what you do every day and a well-designed home should make the right choices feel easy and natural. | EP80 How Our Home’s Layout Affects How We Feel | 25 Mar 2026 | 00:25:37
Layout is more than just where walls go, it’s how your home feels to live in every day. In this episode, I’m talking about all the the subtle but powerful ways layout shapes our mood, stress levels, and how easily (or not) our lives flow through our homes. I chat about why bad circulation quietly causes daily frustration. How thresholds and transitions create calm and clarity. Why adding a pause point or two in your home design can encourage those small moments of stillness we all crave for. And one of my favourites - how to design your layout for better human connection. Because our homes just simply work better when we consider and plan for human needs, like connection, ease, flow, and how we want to feel when we open that front door after a really long day. ******************* PLEASE CAST YOUR KIND VOTES HERE! ******************* Hi, I’m Tash South — interior designer, renovation consultant, and founder of South Place Studio. | EP79 Guest Episode: Eva Sonaike: Exploring Heritage At Home | 11 Mar 2026 | 00:38:01
Some designers create beautiful things. And today’s guest is someone whose work does both. In this episode I talk Eva Sonaike, a London-based textile and interior designer whose work is instantly recognisable for its bold palettes, layered patterns, and joyful energy. But what makes Eva’s work so compelling isn’t just the colour — it’s the narrative behind it. Born in Germany to Nigerian parents, Eva’s work is brimming with colour, confidence, and a real sense of cultural pride. Her collections celebrate the richness of West African culture while translating it into contemporary interiors in a way that feels modern and elegant. In the conversation, Eva refers to The Yoruba culture she draws from, which is known for its rich visual language — bold colour combinations, rhythmic pattern, and textiles that carry meaning as well as beauty. In many ways, you can see that influence in Eva’s work: confident colour, layered prints, and designs that feel alive with story and symbolism. Before founding her own design brand, Eva worked as a fashion journalist. But finding a gap in the market for homeware that reflected her heritage when decorating her own home, she began with a small collection of cushions which quickly grew into a brand stocked by some of the most prestigious retailers. In this conversation, we talk about colour, about how heritage and identity shape the spaces we create, and about why our homes should tell the story of who we are. We also explore something I think is incredibly important; how design can help us create spaces that feel grounding, meaningful, and deeply personal in a world that often feels anything but. Eva brings such warmth and honesty to this conversation. I think you’re going to feel incredibly inspired by the way she sees the role of home in our lives. I interviewed Eva in her colourful and creative London studio, so take a peek on over on my YouTube channel to see some of her incredible work and grab some inspo on how to make your own home feel grounding, vibrant and expressive, hit that play button and we’ll see you inside. This is my conversation with Eva Sonaike. | EP78 Simple Things We Can Do At Home When The World Feels Overwhelming | 25 Feb 2026 | 00:28:50
I'm back and in this episode, I’m sharing a personal update on why the podcast returned a little later than planned… and where it’s heading next. Life, business, a new renovation project, RenoVersity updates, and even a book in the works have all been bubbling away behind the scenes. But more than that, I wanted to talk about something many of us are quietly carrying right now: the weight of the world. When global news cycles feel relentless, economic pressures build, when identity and belonging feel fragile, it can all feel very overwhelming. Inside I look at some small, simple things we can all do at home to gently reset and find a moment of sanctuary from the outside world, and these cold, dark months of the year. ******************* PLEASE CAST YOUR KIND VOTES HERE! ******************* Hi, I’m Tash South — interior designer, renovation consultant, and founder of South Place Studio. | EP76 How To Choose The Right Window Dressings | 19 Nov 2025 | 00:31:32
In this episode, I cover one of the sometimes overlooked elements of your interior: window dressings. Most people leave curtains and blinds until the very end of a renovation, then panic-choose something “good enough” and wonder why the room still doesn’t feel quite right. In this episode I walk you through how to think about your windows like a designer: starting with the view outside, privacy, the light you want to invite in (or block out), and the mood you’re trying to create. There really is more than you might think to choosing the right window dressings. I’ll go through the curtains vs blinds vs shutters debate, to what on earth to do with radiators under windows, to why short curtains really get my goat. Plus lots more - I didn’t realise just how much I had to say about window dressings! If you’ve ever felt stuck on how to dress your windows, this one’s for you. So if you have a window that needs some power dressing, I’ll see you inside. ******************* PLEASE CAST YOUR KIND VOTES HERE! ******************* Hi, I’m Tash South — interior designer, renovation consultant, and founder of South Place Studio. | EP68 Does Renovating Make Financial Sense? | 24 Sep 2025 | 00:28:09
Does Renovating Add Value in 2025? | Home Renovation ROI Explained Wondering if renovating your home is worth the investment in 2025? In this episode of How To Renovate, I break down down the financial pros and cons of renovating vs. moving, UK renovation trends, return on investment for loft conversions and extensions, and how to budget smartly. Discover when it makes sense to renovate. With UK house prices still rising and the cost of moving continuing to soar, more homeowners are choosing to renovate rather than relocate. In this episode I unpack current renovation trends, typical costs, and what kind of return on investment you can expect from projects like loft conversions and extensions. I also share how you can assess whether a renovation is the right move for you — not just financially, but emotionally and practically too. Key Talking Points: UK Renovation Trends (2025) – including stats on rising home improvement loans and the average cost of renovations. Why Renovating is Often Cheaper Than Moving – breaking down stamp duty, solicitor fees, agent costs, and more. The Housing Shortage and Design Gaps – why people can't find the "right" house and are choosing to transform their current space instead. Tailoring Your Home to Your Life – from home gyms to home offices, flexibility matters more than ever. The Financials: Cost vs Value Add – how to calculate return on investment and avoid overspending. | EP67 Design Details I Learned & Loved From Our Barcelona Apartment | 17 Sep 2025 | 00:41:02
Have you ever visited somewhere that influenced changed how you think about design? That’s kind of what happened during my five-week Barcelona getaway. Buzzing Barcelona captured my heart and reinforced my love of cities, just like London did. The medieval alleyways, sunny squares, arty influences, and modern buildings alongside Gaudí’s dreamlike architecture collide to create a place that is historic, modern, endlessly alive, and really quite special. Our family of four stayed in a gorgeously-designed little rental apartment accessed by stepping off a bustling Barcelona street, and through one of those iconic, massive wooden doors. The apartment has so many lovely, clever design details that I will bring into projects that I thought I would share them all with you. So, in this weeks’ episode, I’m breaking down the design details I learned and loved for our Barcelona apartment. Join me inside for a little design masterclass this week, where I’m chatting about taking inspiration from your travels, blending old and new with intention, maintaining those character features, putting together timeless materials palettes, how to use textures well, and how adding just one or two quirks can bring a sense of fun and personality to your space… and a lot more! I'll see you inside! ******************* PLEASE CAST YOUR KIND VOTES HERE! ******************* Hi, I’m Tash South — interior designer, renovation consultant, and founder of South Place Studio. | EP66 The Importance Of Play When Designing Your Home | 10 Sep 2025 | 00:21:08
After a long, inspiring summer in Barcelona, I’m back—and filled with ideas sparked by the incredible, playful architecture of Gaudí. In this episode, we dive into the joy of designing with a sense of play and freedom. Gaudí's bold use of curves, colour, and nature-inspired forms reminded me just how powerful it can be to bend the rules and follow your imagination when it comes to designing our homes. We’ll explore breaking the “design rules”, exploring using all the layers of an interior, designing for feeling—not just aesthetics, and why it’s okay to go all in! I can’t wait to see you inside! ******************* PLEASE CAST YOUR KIND VOTES HERE! ******************* Hi, I’m Tash South — interior designer, renovation consultant, and founder of South Place Studio. | EP65 What Can I Do Now to Make Things Easier Later? | 16 Jul 2025 | 00:21:20
In this week's episode of How To Renovate, I’m kicking things off with a little personal update — I’m heading off to Barcelona for a month! It’s a working holiday (with some well-deserved tapas and sunshine), and while the podcast will be on pause, I’ll be soaking up fresh inspiration, sourcing new ideas, and lining up brilliant guests for when I’m back in September. But back to this episode: it’s a topic I’ve learned countless lessons on – and not always the easy way! We’re talking about what you can do now in your renovation to make your future life easier. Whether it’s clever storage planning, flexible floor layouts, hardwearing materials, or power points that actually end up where you need them to be — I’m sharing info and tips that will save the future you some stress, time, and money down the line. The most successful renovations create homes that grow with you. This means designing flexible spaces that can adapt as children grow older, work situations change, or lifestyle needs evolve. I also go into choosing materials that age gracefully and timeless design elements that allow for personalisation, and allow your home to develop and flex alongside your needs. Your home should be more than just beautiful—it should actively support your lifestyle today while adapting to your needs tomorrow. I’ve seen too many people overlook these things in the rush of a project, only to regret it once the dust settles. So let’s get intentional. Let’s build homes that support the way we live — not just now, but five, ten, fifteen years into the future. | EP59 Breaking the Floorplan: Rethinking the Way You Live in Your Space | 04 Jun 2025 | 00:19:55
Today’s episode is a gentle but firm permission to break the floor plan! Stop letting outdated room labels or cookie-cutter layouts dictate how you live in your home. Estate agents may have labelled the rooms, but that doesn’t mean you have to live in them that way. Maybe you need a yoga space. A music nook. A second office. Or just a calm, sunlit corner to drink your morning coffee and take a breath. Renovating is not just about moving walls or chasing square footage. We want to create a better way of living and a better way to connect within our own homes. Simple connection points in a home mean so much. It really is so powerful when you take ownership of your space, and think about how you want to live and how your home can support that. In this episode we’ll dive into how to challenge your existing floor plan, think in flexible, lifestyle-driven zones, and why your home should support the way you want to live — not fight against it. | EP50 Can Making A Home Help Heal Our Childhood Shame? | 02 Apr 2025 | 00:41:14
This is the 50th episode of How To Renovate. When I started the podcast, back in February 2024, the idea was to focus on short informative episodes about the renovation process. And although I’ve mainly stuck to that, I’ve also found so much joy in interviewing some incredible people and exploring just how much our homes mean to us. Our homes are powerful, they can either support our needs, daily lives and our well-being, or they do not. This week’s episode is deeply personal. I’ve opened up about something I’ve never fully shared before—the shame I carried growing up under apartheid in South Africa, and how that experience shaped my relationship with home. But, as adults, when we finally get to create our own spaces, we often don’t realise how much of our childhood we’re still carrying with us—and how making our own homes can help to heal that shame. For me, it’s been taking the feeling of not belonging that has roots that stretch far back, across continents and decades, and with quiet rebellion and intentional creation, turning that into what people who looked like me weren’t allowed to have, into the home I’ve built today. So join me inside to explore how home can be a space for reclaiming worth, safety, and identity. I speak about ways we can begin to heal childhood shame through the way we design and care for our homes—by prioritising self-expression, comfort, security, and making space for connection and joy. Whether or not you’ve experienced trauma or displacement, I truly believe we all carry pieces of our past into the homes we create. If this resonates with you in any way, grab that coffee and hit play. ******************* PLEASE CAST YOUR KIND VOTES HERE! ******************* Hi, I’m Tash South — interior designer, renovation consultant, and founder of South Place Studio. | EP49 Unexpected Places To Find Renovation Inspiration | 26 Mar 2025 | 00:19:50
Renovation inspiration doesn’t always have to come from a screen. It doesn't have to come from Pinterest and Instagram and TV, useful as they may be sometimes! In this episode, I want to help you explore other places and ways to get that inspiration for your home. Seeing something on a screen and trying to copy it can look, well, copied. I find that best design ideas come from unexpected places, and sometimes the smallest things can spark the best ideas. So let’s get into it and look more closely at the things we experience, the tiny details we overlook, and the moments that make us feel something. Let’s look beyond the usual sources. Finding your unique design and personality for your home amid the endless scroll of perfectly curated Instagram feeds and Pinterest boards can feel impossible. | EP48 No Vanilla Renos Please! | 19 Mar 2025 | 00:18:35
What makes a home truly special? It's not the magnolia walls or the generic fixtures that developers often choose to please everyone—and ends up inspiring no one! Whether you're renovating to stay or planning to sell later, the "vanilla renovation" approach robs your space of the very thing that makes a house feel like a home: personality. We explore the balance between timeless foundations and bold accents, examining how thoughtful material selections can elevate your home, but without risking resale value. I chat about how you can add your own DNA into the design with confidence, but still maintain that balance, and how neutral doesn't have to mean magnolia or white. | EP45 Why Kate Watson-Smyth Isn't A Fan Of Slow Renovating & How You Can Speed Yours Up | 26 Feb 2025 | 00:58:27
This week, I was lucky enough to interview Kate Watson-Smyth. If you love interiors, you’ll undoubtedly know about her! Kate is a renowned interiors author, journalist, podcaster and consultant on all matters interior design, and the founder of the award-winning blog Mad About The House, which can now be found on substack. Kate wrote an article in The Times that caught my eye - about why she takes no pleasure in renovating and needs it done fast—which really made me smile, because there does seem to be a trend for slow renovating at the moment. And since all I do is to help people get through their renovations on time, on budget and with as little stress as possible, I thought I just had to have Kate on the podcast to talk more about this. So in this episode we dive into this topic that we both feel strongly about—why we’re not fans of slow renovating and how you can speed yours up. Join us inside for tonnes of useful info on just where to spend your time when renovating, and you can steal Kate’s renovation wisdom and knowledge too. See you inside! | EP41 How to Declutter - Tips That Actually Work | 29 Jan 2025 | 00:26:23
I realised how angry I sounded, and I did consider re-recording it, but then realised that I am actually angry about clutter. 🙈 This episode is hugely based on an episode of the The Mel Robbins Podcast I listened to a while ago, and I thought the tips were really simple, and quite different to the usual advice you hear out there about sparking joy and rainbow organising, both of which I have never been entirely convinced of, I mean the dedication and time it must take to keep everything that way for any longer than a few days! I believe that embarking on a big home renovation, should definitely start with a big de-clutter. I do calm down a bit toward the middle of the episode. ******************* PLEASE CAST YOUR KIND VOTES HERE! ******************* Hi, I’m Tash South — interior designer, renovation consultant, and founder of South Place Studio.
