How Terril Tyson Worked His Way to Analytics VP(with no degree) + Student Q&A/Portfolio Review
In this podcast episode we talk with Terril Tyson about his career. He started straight out of high school working in a call center from a bank then got promoted into an analyst position, moved into management and now is the VP for a bank. We talk about his journey and some of the lessons he learned along the way.
Also joining this episode is my student Craig Thomas who is interested in breaking into the banking analytics space. We ask Craig an interview question and have Terril weigh in and give feedback on his answer. We end the episode with a portfolio review. Craig showcases his Maven Analytics portfolio project that used Power BI to analyze loan data.

Over the past 4 months Al has seen some massive growth on LinkedIn and established his own personal brand as an aspiring analyst. He has even taken over the LinkedIn page for the "How to Get an Analytics" channel and within a little bit over a month grown the company page by 4x.
Albert breaks down how to create engaging content on LinkedIn, how to build out an effective LinkedIn profile and also talks about the LinkedIn algorithm. An interesting insight he touched on too is how LinkedIn is a "content poor" social media platform. This means that not many people are posting regularly at the moment. This is a great opportunity for you to fill the void and make a big bang on the platform if you start creating well written and thoughtful content.

Interviewing is always pretty tough but then they have to go and ask questions like "What makes you happy?". There is not technically right or wrong way to answer open ended questions like this. You could say just about anything and be "correct" BUT you need to approach these questions in the right way.
The right approach is two steps:
1. Show what kind of a human you are. 2. Make the argument that you're the *right" human for the opportunity.
