In 1839 work commenced to build a tunnel over two miles long beneath the streets of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the north east of England, this was to get coal to the River Tyne. In later years it would provide shelter to the people of the city during German bombing raids during World War 2. It was then left empty, abandoned, and forgotten, before the damp, dark, eerie tunnel was reopened as a historic visitor attraction in more recent years. Since reopening however, what it clear is that the tunnel wasn’t as empty as it first seemed, as the ghosts of the past remained underground. Waiting. A 15th century castle built on the site of a 1st century fort, is the haunt of a whole host of ghosts that were linked to this place in life, and have not been able to move on in death. A nursemaid who was accidently responsible for the death of the owner of the castle’s child was punished by her own life being taken, the ghost of a one-eyed woman, and the tormented soul of the treacherous nephew of the castle’s chief who was left to die of thirst in the dungeon and more, all remain here in perpetuity. A tourist attraction in the heart of one of the scariest cities anywhere on earth, offering frightening fun to families who enjoy ghoulish and gory stories told by actors made up as characters from this city’s dark past. In 1379 a prisoner made their final journey, the longest journey he would ever make, as his destination was the gallows, where, before a crowd could barely wait to see his dangle by his neck until dead. In 1801 these gallows claimed it’s final victim, and in the 422 years in between hundreds of condemned met their end here, including the most famous highwayman that there ever was. The site where the gallows once stood appears to have been stained by the extreme death and suffering that occurred here, which manifests itself in people being touched by unseen hands, and disembodied voices carried on the breeze. A grand estate built around a house built in 1693, and destroyed by fire in 1977 is said to be the haunt of shadowy figures belonging to those who knew the building so well in life. The stable block, added in 1811, is one of the more active areas. Why this is the case we’ll likely never know. Phantom lights float around the house, and whispering is heard deep in the woodland. Dogs howl and bark within the grounds in the dead of night, and can be heard for miles around. With its imposing stones and intricate architecture, this structure has stood as a testament to human ingenuity and skill for millennia. A popular holiday park built around a 13th century castle. This is not your typical location for a paranormal investigation, a holiday park full of luxury caravans and holiday makers spending their weekends boating on the lake, or playing on the arcades and fruit machines. This is an enhanced version of episode 10 with actual audio from the investigation. In 1985 a tunnel was found by a Scottish international rugby player, that led to an enormous underground complex, that had once been a thriving, lawless, city beneath Edinburgh.  This is a very paranormally active place indeed, with one malevolent phantom in particular being very unappreciative of the visitors who come here daily on tours. A popular railway museum, which opened in 1975, is said to be the haunt of a number of ghosts. Paul, a violent entity who lurks in the ladies toilets, George who remains within the Travelling Post Office, and still takes huge pride in his work, many years following his passing, a tall man in a top hat, a mischievous spirit who likes to mess up the gift shop after dark, the archives has been the scene of terrifying possessions, and a haunted train carriage which was once used as a mobile brother by the Nazis during the second world war.   Would I encounter any of these phantoms when my team and I joined another group to investigate this building after dark? Originally built as a children’s orphanage, before becoming a hospital, and then later a lunatic asylum. This building has bore witness to all manner of horrors, including the death of a small unloved child who was locked in a cupboard as a punishment, and forgotten about, only to be found dead later. Today knocking, banging, screaming, and sobbing is heard from within cupboards in that area, which is nicknamed the Naughty Boys Corridor. It’s stood empty and abandoned for over 25 years, and has a growing reputation which has seen it regularly named in top 10 lists in recent years of the most haunted places to be found in the UK. Full apparitions, and shadowy figures are seen all too often here and send people screaming in terror. Old wheelchairs and gurneys, remnants of the building’s past, move all on their own. People have reported the feeling of being pushed down and feeling sick and left physically shaking in some areas of this location. Whereas others have simply broken down in floods of tears, feeling utter despair and sadness for no apparent reason. A historic inn, in a remote, beautiful location is claimed to be not only the oldest pub in Wales, but the most haunted. This building is said to have been where 182 men, women, and children were trialed and sentenced to death, and their execution was carried out right here, within these centuries old stone walls. A 12th century castle, which has now stood alone, empty, and unused for over 350 years. Constructed upon a street with Roman origins, number 35 Stonegate was built in 1482 and has a fascinating history having been a publishing house, a psychic museum, a haunted house offering self-led tours and overnight paranormal investigations, and now it’s a clothes shop. Believed to be home to 14 spirits, this is one of the most haunted places in York, and one of the phantoms that call this place home is believed to be very, very dangerous indeed. In episode 27 we looked at the Jamaica Inn, the famed smuggler’s inn on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall in the South West of England.
