Who Killed Bobby Fuller? - Part 119 Jan 202601:02:05

*We have a bit of biznasty to go over in the beginning so if you want to go straight to the story, skip ahead to around the 9:12 mark.

23-year-old Bobby Fuller, the self-proclaimed “Rock ‘n’ Roll King of the Southwest,” was climbing the charts with hits like “Let Her Dance” and “I Fought the Law” when his life was abruptly cut short. Police quickly wrote his death off as a suicide and there was no criminal investigation. However, the circumstances surrounding Bobby’s death strongly suggest foul play.

The Life & Murder of Ron Goldman - Part 127 May 202401:00:38

Ron Goldman could put a smile on anyone's face; just ask any of the inner-city kids that looked up to him as their camp counselor, or one of the cerebral palsy patients he used to dance with at the residence home where he worked. As the oldest of five siblings, he embraced the role of big brother and couldn't wait to have a family of his own. He was always looking out for others, whether it was giving them a pep talk or bringing them leftover food from Mezzaluna, the restaurant where he waited tables. Tragically, it would be a similar act of kindness that would land him in the wrong place at the wrong time.

*Patreon Freebie!* Patricia Douglas: The Girl Who Took on MGM20 May 202400:57:39

**Hi there, Misfits! We originally posted this episode on our Patreon back in April but have decided to release it for everyone. We hope you find this story as important as we did!**

CW: This episode contains discussion of rape.

Before Rose McGowan spoke out against Harvey Weinstein, before "MeToo" became a hashtag, before hashtags even existed, there was Patricia Douglas. Patricia - or Patsy, as she liked to be called - was a talented dancer living in Los Angeles in the 1930s. Her talent led her to dance in films with Ginger Rogers and Busby Berkeley, and her innocent nature and complete indifference to fame and celebrity attracted the friendship of several stars, including Bing Crosby and William Frawley. But that would all come to an abrupt end. On what should have been a typical night of work at MGM studios, Patsy and dozens of other underage girls were shuttled to a remote location and tricked into thinking they were extras in a movie. Things couldn't have been further from the truth.

Poisoning on Set: The "Titanic" Chowder Mystery15 Apr 202400:40:35

It's the 112th Anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic. This horrendous maritime tragedy is the basis of one of Hollywood's greatest hit movies: "Titanic" (1997). The production was fraught with challenges; on one particular night during filming some of the cast and crew enjoyed a meal of seafood chowder then soon began feeling..."iffy."  What happened next was a WILD and raucous adventure, leaving everyone asking, "Who spiked the soup?"

The Mysterious Crash of Stunt Pilot B.H. DeLay08 Apr 202400:48:18

Misfits, it's a morning recording and Kevin hasn't had his coffee yet. We're a little unhinged in this one - bear with us!

Born in 1891, B.H. DeLay was a pioneering aviator and entertainer, so working as a stunt pilot in the movie industry seemed like the perfect job. He was performing tricks in the air that had literally NEVER been done before! He was incredibly skilled, so taking a friend up for a ride in his plane seemed like nothing more than a typical Wednesday. But there was nothing typical about July 4, 1923 when the wings of DeLay's plane inexplicably snapped, causing the aircraft to plummet to the ground. DeLay and his friend were killed. Was it an accident? Or had someone tampered with the bolts?

The Terrifying Legacy of "Ghostwatch"01 Apr 202400:56:52

On Halloween night, 1992, Britain’s BBC 1 presented one of the most talked about programs in television history. The program was called "Ghostwatch" and it would eventually become one of the great “do you remember” moments of British television. The controversial airing left the public terrified and allegedly contributed to the suicide of an 18-year-old boy and PTSD in other children and adults. Today it is considered a cult classic.

But the money didn't last long and Mimi could no longer keep up with her lavish lifestyle. On August 18, 1949, Boomhower vanished and was never seen again. Gig Young: The Oscar-Winning Murderer - Part 210 Mar 202401:33:53

CW: This episode contains discussion of suicide, sexual assault and domestic assault.

Here it is! We wanted to make sure you got the conclusion of the Gig Young story before the Oscars aired. We left off in Part 1 with Gig's marriage to Elizabeth Montgomery coming to a hostile end. Well misfits, things don't get any better from here. In this episode we'll get to Gig's final two marriages. When he moves into an apartment with his fifth wife, the previous owner warns him not to disturb the "nice ghosts" that live there, and another source warns of a malevolent presence lurking within the walls. Gig brushes the comments off as nonsense, but perhaps there was some foreshadowing in those warnings...

Gig Young: The Oscar-Winning Murderer - Part 106 Mar 202401:21:09

Ahhh...the Academy Awards - a night of fashion, festivity and future murderers. Wait, what?

Gig Young was quite the hottie back in his day (think George Clooney but in the mid-1900s). He had Hollywood starlets falling at his feet and a career many actors could only dream of. But he also had a lot of inner demons stemming from an abusive and traumatic childhood, and left untreated (or mistreated, as was often the case) those demons would eventually find their way to the surface.

Note: There's a section where I talk about his first wife, Sheila, and how she didn't like attending parties with him. But I accidentally say Sophie instead of Sheila. Sorry about the confusion!

Larry Austin: Murder at the Silent Movie Theatre22 Jan 202400:49:46

Larry Austin had three loves: "Murder She Wrote", his cat (Sir Purity) and silent films. The idea that anyone could have anything against the 74-year-old theatre owner seemed unfathomable. So the community was shocked when he was gunned down in the lobby of his own theatre in what appeared to be a robbery gone wrong. Detectives found the whole situation odd. For one thing, Larry didn't put up any resistance when the shooter demanded cash yet the gunman shot him anyway. And as for all that money? Well, the gunman left without it. Kinda strange if you're trying to rob a place...

The Legal Debacle of Roman Polanski08 Jan 202401:15:12

CW: This episode discusses the sexual assault of a child.

Happy New Year, Misfits! We're back after a much needed holiday break, and we have a doozy of a case for you.

Roman Polanski, a French and Polish movie director, producer, screenwriter and actor, is a huge name in Hollywood. He has received several of the movie industry's top accolades for his original and popular films, but his ultimate downfall occurred in 1977 when he was accused of raping a 13-year-old girl. After messy legal proceedings led to Polanski fleeing the United States, never to return, the case went down in Hollywood infamy - mainly because justice was never fully served.

Mobsters, Murders & Mitzi: The History of The Comedy Store12 Dec 202301:02:59

CW: This episode discusses suicide and abortion.

"The Comedy Store is a dark temple of fear and pain that to this day I believe is built over one of the gates to Hell.” - Marc Maron

It might surprise some to learn that a place meant to bring laughter to audiences every night is the same place hiding some DARK secrets. We're talking MOB secrets. MURDER secrets. Add in some of the funniest people on the planet, a labor strike, LOTS of cocaine and a queen bee that would give even Regina George a run for her money, and you've got the world-famous Comedy Store. Oh, and it's haunted AF.

Everything You Didn’t Need to Know About ’Home Alone’04 Dec 202301:41:56

CW: This episode discusses child abuse, domestic abuse and sexual assault.

You probably weren't expecting a content warning on an episode about 'Home Alone', but this is Horrorwood, remember? The film might be a holiday treasure, but behind the scenes things weren't so jolly. The cast of the Christmas classic seemed to have it all: Arrests? Check. Drug addiction? Check. A murder-for-hire plot? Yep, that too. Get cozy, ya filthy misfits, we're diving deep.

Ed Gein & the Iconic Movies He Inspired27 Nov 202301:01:12

Parents will often say to children, "Don't worry, it isn't real" when it comes to a scary monster in a movie. But the most terrifying monsters walk among us every day. And I can assure you, Misfits, they are VERY real.  Today we’re talking about gruesome serial killer Ed Gein - a.k.a. The Butcher of Plainfield - and the movies his story inspired, including: Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Silence of the Lambs. Eek.

The Thanksgiving Death of Karyn Kupcinet21 Nov 202301:27:26

Sixty years ago in the early morning hours of Thanksgiving 1963, 22-year-old Karyn Kupcinet lay dead in her West Hollywood apartment. The daughter of prominent Chicago couple Essee and Irv Kupcinet, Karyn had been living in LA to pursue her dreams of stardom. But Karyn was deeply troubled. Not even her own family knew just how far her depression reached. Addicted to a variety of pills, obsessed with a man who did not return her feelings of love, struggling to make it big in show business...it seemed obvious to her closest friends that Karyn had died by suicide. However, as we all know, things aren't always what they seem...

The Legend of ’Candyman’30 Oct 202301:00:08

At 8:45pm on April 22, 1987, Chicago police received a call from Ruthie Mae McCoy, a 52-year-old black woman living on Chicago's South Side in the Grace Abbott Homes, part of the ABLA Housing Project. Ruthie cried for help saying, “They want to come through the bathroom.” Due to police negligence, racism, and a complete failure on the part of the Chicago Housing Authority at the time, Ruthie's cries for help were not given proper attention. Two days later she was found dead in her apartment. This story would later be referenced in the movie Candyman (1992 and 2021) about a hook-handed man that appears and kills you if you say his name five times into a mirror. This episode explores Ruthie Mae McCoy, her murder, the history of Chicago Public Housing, and how Candyman explores themes of racism, classism, and violence in the projects.

CW: This episode focuses on the death of an innocent Black man at the hands of the LAPD

A Beverly Hills mansion, Halloween weekend, a costume party...all the ingredients for what should have been a fun and celebratory evening. And for Anthony Lee, it did start out that way. He was on top of the world having just wrapped an acting role on NBC's "ER" as well as becoming a leader in the Buddhist organization he'd been a part of for many years. But what began as an evening partying with friends ended with Anthony dead on the floor and conflicting reports as to what exactly happened.

The Life & Unthinkable Death of Adrienne Shelly16 Oct 202301:11:07

"Every horrible day in history has a much happier day before it." --Andy Ostroy

On Halloween night in 2006, Adrienne Shelly was having a blast chatting with friends and helping little kids try to bust open the ghost-shaped piñata hanging in her NYC apartment. She and her husband Andy were hosting a party and enjoying the trick-or-treat holiday with their toddler, Sophie.

Adrienne was also waiting to hear if her most recent film, "Waitress," which she not only wrote and directed but also acted in, had been accepted into Sundance. Sadly, she would never find out. The next day...Adrienne was dead.

It's all about YOU today, Misfits! It's a Misfit Monday, which means we take a break from the Hollywood/celebrity/entertainment stories and instead focus on YOUR creepy tales. Today's batch of misfit stories involves a ghost who likes to mess with plumbing, a medium with special messages from loved ones, an old-timey shipwreck and a ghost girl in a pub. Hooray for spooky season!

Hollywood’s First Sex Symbol: Rudolph Valentino & His Hot Ghost02 Oct 202301:11:07

Picture it, the early 1900’s: booze, speakeasies, cigarettes, fancy dance clubs and silent films. Hollywood was on the up and up and the movie industry was booming! This era in film history gave birth to the first sex symbol, Rudolph Valentino. Roldolfo Alfonso Raffaello Pierre Filibert Guglielmi di Valentina d’Antonguolla was a famous Italian actor who was mainly known by his nickname "The Latin Lover" (even though he, uh, wasn't Latino). His story is a tumultuous one, passing away at the young age of 31. But his handsome ghost and the spirit of his doberman pinscher, Kabar, still haunt Los Angeles (and SEVERAL other locations).

The Murderer That Inspired Tobe Hooper’s ’Eaten Alive’25 Sep 202300:56:31

The Butcher of Elmendorf, The Bluebeard of South Texas, The Alligator Man...these are all nicknames for Joe Ball, a murderous man from a wealthy family who may or may not have fed his victims to his pet alligators. He also inspired the 1976 film "Eaten Alive" directed by Tobe Hooper of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" fame. As far as horror movies based on true stories go, this is perhaps one of the wildest.

Haunted Theatres: The Savannah Theatre in Savannah, GA18 Sep 202300:52:40

Ghosts? Check. Fires that start and stop on their own? Check. A presidential assassin? Check...and yikes. The Savannah Theatre really takes the whole "all theatres are haunted" belief to a whole new level, which isn't surprising considering it's more than 200 years old and located in a city that is literally built on the dead.

Standing in Chippewa Square - the backdrop for some of Forrest Gump's most iconic scenes - the Savannah Theatre has played host to some of the world's most famous - and not-so-famous - performers, and some of them refuse to leave...

Tragedy on Set of ’Twilight Zone: The Movie’11 Sep 202300:46:48
“You are about to enter another dimension." No, but it feels like that when it comes to safety in the film industry in the 1980's. The Twilight Zone was such a HUGE hit in popular culture, an anthology movie aptly titled Twilight Zone: The Movie started filming in 1982 and was released on June 24, 1983. “Time Out,” the first segment in the movie, was the subject of much controversy in Hollywood at the time, and for good reason: the production led to the deaths of three people during filming…and it was all caught on camera. Murder at Marlon Brando’s House - Part 128 Aug 202300:55:44

"Your life together smells of tragedy, it smells of death.” Ummm, not exactly words you want your dad saying about you and your girlfriend. The Brandos were a troubled brood, there's no doubt about it. Drugs, violence, extramarital affairs...the list goes on. While many might think having a Hollywood legend for a father is all glitz and glamour, some people might say the Brando kids never stood a chance (us - we're some people). On a chilly evening in May of 1990, Marlon Brando's sprawling estate became the scene of a horrific tragedy that set off a chain of devastating events.

The Sordid Past of the Cecil Hotel21 Aug 202301:03:08

The Cecil Hotel in downtown LA boasted 700 rooms and was originally meant for business travelers and tourists...but then came the Great Depression and things went awry. Over the years it's seen its share of murders, suicides and alleged paranormal events, not to mention it has been home to multiple (yes, MULTIPLE) serial killers. Eek.

SUBSCRIBER FREEBIE! The Haunted Hollywood Wax Museum22 Dec 202500:45:17

As we take a few days off to enjoy the holidays, enjoy this Patreon episode from December 2023.

Founded in 1965 by entrepreneur Sapuran “Spoony” Singh Sunder, the Hollywood Wax Museum on Hollywood Boulevard has delighted visitors for decades. Even if the famous wax figures aren’t considered the most artistic, the Museum has a charm that keeps people coming through its doors. The building that houses the Museum used to be an old brassiere and luggage factory, and of course was a front for a speakeasy in the 1920s. So, naturally, it’s HAUNTED AF. Hear the history of Spoony Singh, the Hollywood Wax Museum, and the ghosts that linger among the wax…with suitcases filled with bras! Episode Sources:

The Amityville Horror House07 Aug 202301:04:34

A Dutch Colonial house sits on the foundation at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, Long Island, New York, about 30 miles outside of New York City. It’s a house with a gruesome past and a penchant for collecting the souls of its inhabitants. This personification of evil is known as The Amityville Horror House, and this is the story of Ronald DeFeo Jr., the mass murder of the DeFeo family, and the subsequent haunting that launched a movie franchise. Is the house ACTUALLY haunted, and are the ghosts (or demons!) still tormenting the residents there? Kate and Kevin speculate wildly on all things Amityville!

’The Exorcist’ Murder of Reporter Addison Verrill31 Jul 202300:45:08

Last week we talked all about the film The Exorcist; the horrors, tribulations, and lore that made it one of the scariest movies ever made. But there was one main piece of trivia missing: a background actor in the movie turned out to be a real life murderer and potential serial killer. It was the early morning hours of September 14, 1977 in New York City, and 36-year-old reporter for Variety, Addison Verrill, was leaving Mine Shaft, an after-hours gay back room bar. This would be the last time that Verrill was seen alive. Journalist for the New York Times and gay activist, Arthur Bell, would later be at the center of the case, receiving a phone call confession from the murderer.
