Join Lisa and Laura for the final episode in our series Names of God. In biblical times, names were of great importance—they conveyed a person’s essence, history, nature, or character. As we explore the various names of God in the Old Testament, we gain insight into His character. With each name, we will learn a new attribute, deepening our understanding of and growing closer to God. In today’s episode, we explore our seventh name, Jehovah Jireh—my provider. The word for provide, “jireh," in the Old Testament, means to see. When God sees, He foresees. Our all-knowing, ever-present, eternal Father knows the end from the beginning and so in His omniscience, He provides. But what about when God asks us to do things that don’t make sense? When what is happening looks like the opposite of His provision—a contradiction to what He promised? This is what today’s episode is about, and you do not want to miss it.

As we explore the various names of God in the Old Testament, we gain insight into His character. With each name, we will learn a new attribute, deepening our understanding of and growing closer to God. In today’s episode, we explore our sixth name, Jehovah Shammah—the Lord is There. This is a great name of God to call on when you feel like everything is dark, when you feel hopeless, when you feel unbearably alone or abandoned. It’s also good for those times when you feel stuck, or even imprisoned, by hard circumstances. If you are nodding your head to any of this, grab your Bible (a notepad and pen aren’t a bad idea either) because this is the episode for you!

Do I believe that Jehovah Shammah empathizes with me? Do I believe that the things that trouble me also trouble Him? If the answer is no, ask the Lord to reveal why. Why don’t I believe? What is the wound keeping me from recognizing Your presence? (Do this reflection in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, if possible!)
Ask the Lord, do the things that trouble me trouble You? And sit in silence and listen to Him speak to you.

With each name, we will learn a new attribute, deepening our understanding of and growing closer to God. No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.

Is there an area of my life where what I say doesn’t match what I do?
Is my purpose in life—the thing that I am revealing is most important to me— the right purpose? Is it what God says matters most? And am I living in a way that makes it clear that this is what is most important to me?
Am I continuing to grow in my faith or am I stagnant?
Am I patient?
Am I willing to love in radical and self-sacrificing ways? Even when it’s inconvenient? Even with people who are on my nerves?
Am I steadfast? Am I faithful in my relationships? Do I stick with things or do I quit when it gets difficult or bored? Am I resolute and unwavering?
