| Ken King - Author of the Book "Pyramid Scheme" - Episode 1302 | 25 Sep 2026 | 01:22:34 | |
Ken King is the author of the new book, Pyramid Scheme - How sport became an empire, why it is collapsing, and how we rebuild the game. Ken is the Executive Director of Calgary Minor Basketball, a non-profit of over 7000 athletes, 1500 coaches, and 300 officials. He is also the Principle/Founder of Boost Innovation Inc., a Calgary-based technology company building a portfolio of sport performance and coaching applications. He holds fifteen years of experience in high-performance collegiate basketball coaching and government affairs connected to Canadian sport. King’s work sits at the intersection of sport technology, athlete development, and systems design, and he contributes regularly to national sport development conversations through research, writing, and direct policy engagement. On this episode Mike and Ken discuss why youth sports increasingly operates as an expensive, restrictive system that funnels money and opportunity toward a small elite group. Ken shares how pay-to-play models, early specialization, overtraining, and limited alternatives contribute to athlete burnout and dropout. The episode also examines why coach effectiveness should be measured by player experience and retention rather than credentials or playing history. King highlights the crisis in referee retention, arguing that organizations must protect officials, hold abusive adults accountable, and provide meaningful administrative support. The conversation concludes with a vision for rebuilding youth sports through more affordable entry points, easier exits, multi-sport opportunities, and accessible ways for every child to keep playing. | Andre Jackson - Director & Producer of the Documentary "Beyond Banners" - Episode 1294 | 07 Sep 2026 | 01:11:50 | |
Andre Jackson is the producer and director of the documentary Beyond Banners which follows sixty years of Gwynn Park High School basketball, a powerhouse public school program in Prince George’s County, Maryland. The doc begins as the story of one basketball program and grows into an examination of what is happening to high school sports on a national level. As school choice, Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) deals, and unrestricted transfers change high school sports, the film asks what communities lose when the players who once carried their traditions leave and go elsewhere. On this episode Mike & Andre discuss the making of Beyond Banners, a documentary about Gwynn Park High School’s historic basketball program and its impact on the surrounding community. Director Andre Jackson, a former Gwynn Park player, explains how a conversation in a barber shop inspired him to tell the story of the school’s championships, player development, and father-son coaching legacy. He discusses the challenges of becoming a first-time filmmaker, gathering archival footage, shaping the story in the editing room, building a professional crew, and recovering from a serious health scare during production. The conversation also examines how NIL, AAU basketball, private schools, and player transfers are changing the landscape of public-school basketball and weakening long-standing community connections. Beyond Banners is a reflection on legacy, loyalty, teamwork, and the importance of preserving the community-centered culture that helped generations of athletes thrive. Calvin Booth is the Founder of Standard Front Office and the former General Manager of the Denver Nuggets where he helped build the 2023 NBA Championship Team. Standard Front Office is a real-time, expert-built evaluation of the college basketball player market that is delivered to every program on equal terms. Calvin has served in NBA scouting and front office positions for the New Orleans Pelicans, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Denver Nuggets, eventually being named general manager of the Nuggets in 2020. Booth began his front office career after playing 10 years in the NBA. He played his college basketball at Penn State University and was drafted in the 2nd Round (35th overall) by the Washington Wizards in 1999. On this episode Mike & Calvin discuss his innovative new venture, Standard Front Office, which aims to revolutionize college basketball operations by offering a comprehensive evaluation platform for collegiate players. This service assists programs in navigating the increasingly complex landscape of college athletics, particularly with the rise of the transfer portal and the incorporation of NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) considerations. Throughout our dialogue, Booth elaborates on the challenges faced by college coaches today, including the overwhelming task of roster construction amidst a talent pool that boasts over 700 players capable of contributing to elite teams. His experiences as a player and executive provide invaluable context as he discusses the need for a more structured approach to scouting and player evaluation, emphasizing the importance of fit within team dynamics rather than merely acquiring talent based on star power. In exploring the evolution of college basketball, Booth articulates the opportunities and challenges presented by the current recruiting environment. He reflects on the substantial changes that have occurred since his playing days, noting that the influx of financial considerations has altered the motivations of both players and coaches alike. The discussion highlights the imperative for programs to adapt and evolve in order to maintain competitiveness, particularly as they grapple with the financial implications of attracting top talent. By leveraging data, analytics, and old school scouting, Standard Front Office seeks to equip teams with the tools necessary to make informed decisions, thereby enhancing their chances of success in this dynamic landscape.
