| Episode Nineteen - Future Cops (1993) | 23 Dec 2024 | 01:48:45 | |
Its our last episode of the new year and we didn't do as many as last, so we sincerily hope you will excuse us but with a change of location for one of your podcaster and a change of employment for the other, there was no time to truly do everything we wanted. This also means, as you can expect from the date of publication, the episode we tease herein will have to wait. Fear no more thought, as we have recorded another great one where we discuss the merits of Future cops. A film long only known to the most hardcore of hong kong cinema purist as one of the worst one ever made has made its way to Blu-ray thanks to Eureka. This, very loose, adaptation of the classic Capcom fighting game that changed everything for gamers worldwide, Street Fighter 2, demonstrates Wong Jing's imagination to surf on every possible trend even if the end results doesn't really do the original material justice. Unfortunately, this episode was recorded under difficult circumstances so the sound isn't the best we ever had. It does mean a few words were cut off from time to time so, for clarification, the four heavenly kings of canto-pop, as explained by Wing, are Aaron Kwok, Jacky Cheung, Leon Lai and Andy Lau. As for the director of the first two Fight back to School, that's none other than Gordon Chan. | Episode Eighteen - Halloween Special: Baby Assassins, Bride of Chucky (1998), Encounter of a Spooky Kind (1985) and Mr Vampire (1980) | 29 Oct 2024 | 02:02:26
That's it, its the end! The final showdown between two formers friends! They will be blood, tears and maybe some guts... Or maybe not. For this new episode we have chosen to cover not one, but two fims at the same time... but they aren't part of a series. For Halloween, we thought we'd cover two of our favourite, and two classics, 1980's Encounter of the spooky kind, directed, written and with Sammo Hung, and 1985's Mr Vampire, directed by Ricky Lau and starring Lam Ching-Ying. However, as an intro, we bring you a conversation around the japanese franchise of teenage action movies, Baby Assassins, starring Akari Takaishi and Saori Izawa, and... Bride of Chucky (?!) directed by none other than Hong Kong's own Ronny Yu. | Episode Nine - From Beijing with Love (1994) | 23 Jan 2024 | 01:43:13
We are back! And what better way to start the new year with a solid comedy from the 1990s? This is the first time we are talking about Stephen Chow, mostly known outside of Hong Kong for Shaolin soccer and Kung-fu Hustly, but Wing chosed From Beijing with Love and Mathieu was quite happy to discover this hommage and parody of James Bond movie drenched with more subtle nods to Wong Kai Wai and a classic figure of Chinese literature. We also start this episode with an half hour discussing the merits of the Mortal kombat series in relation to martial arts and why Mortal Kombat 11's story mode is "a better time travel story than Avengers Endgame". We hope you enjoy this first episode for 2024, let us know what you think by sending us messages on our Instagram or on bluesky, and tell your friends, family, pets, and colleagues about us. | Episode Eight .five - Silent night (2023) | 19 Dec 2023 | 00:59:44
Surprise! We might have said we were taking a break until January... or at least that's what we told each other... but, the new John Woo movie came out in the theater in the Netherlands, Mat watched it and he had to tell Wing and you all about it. Its... well, it certainly is a movie, so I won't spoil anything but we hope you will enjoy us talking about it. This episode is shorter, or was supposed to be shorter, but we ended up talking about Mortal Kombat 11 at the end. That's what you get with a Christmas special, a whole lot of fun and nonsense. So, enjoy this episode 8.5 and see you in January for a return to our regular programming with more classic Hong Kong productions. | Episode Eight - Righting wrongs (1986) | 22 Nov 2023 | 02:01:00
Its almost time for the winter holidays and what best movie to watch than an ass kicking martial movie featuring two underrated legends in a memorable movie with so many endings you could pick anything to fit the mood of the day? Righting wrongs is the second Corey Huen movie for us after Yes, madam. In Righting wrongs he teams up once again with Cynthia Rothrock, alongside the legendary Yuen Biao, for an action packed story where law and justice clash when a cop and a vigilante lawyer end up chasing the same criminal. Our conversation around the movie starts at 30 minutes in the episode after we discuss the values of the recent Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons video game and the documentary Enter the clones of Bruce Lee, directed by David Gregory. A little warning for listeners who want to avoid spoilers, we discuss the endings at length from 1hour 30 minutes to 50 minutes. However, don't miss at the end the pationate plea from Wing to give us a time machine and direct a Hong Kong Daredevil adaptation! | Episode Seven - Magic Cop (1990) | 25 Oct 2023 | 01:08:32
Spooky season is upon us so we felt it was our duty to shine a light on a... sort of spooky movie? Magic cop is an action/comedy about cops dealing with the super-natural. Who would have guessed that? Needless to say, the plot is paper thin but the movie is packed with surprises and magic fight scenes perfectly orchestrated by a young film director, Wei Tung. The man later pursued a career as an action director for stunts, and Magic Cop demonstrates very well his talent in this domain. As for the cast, we found a familiar face at the front, the legendary Lam Ching-ying, from classics such as the Mr Vampire series of films, Encounters of a spooky kind 1 and 2, or Hocus Pocus. A specialist of the super-natural with a perfect set of eyebrows. Are you not entertained? | Episode Six - The Police Story Trilogy (1985, 1988, 1992) | 25 Sep 2023 | 01:44:56
You can't do a podcast on Hong Kong action cinema and not talk about Jackie Chan. That's impossible. Its forbidden. So, to talk about the great man and his passion for death defying stunts, we choose to talk about not one, not two, but three movies among the ones he did in the great city of Hong Kong, namely the first three Police Story movies. If you've not seen them or only seen the first one (the one with the mall fight scene, you know the one we are talking about), now is your chance to hear how they compare to each other, what are the trademarks of the series and what makes Jackie Chan a great stunt man but a terrible boyfriend. | Episode Five - The Killer (1989) | 07 Aug 2023 | 01:40:01
Episode five is up and today we are talking about THE movie most people think about when they talk about action films in Hong Kong cinema. The Killer is certainly an iconic film of this era and of the Heroic bloodshed genre, but its also a movie often perceived only as an gun feast when it carries so much more. Today we intend to dig into The Killer and why it's still unique and influential to this day. | Episode Four - The Mission (1999) | 30 Jun 2023 | 01:35:15
Epside four is up and its turn for us to move out of the 80s and talk about a 90s classic, Johnnie To's The Mission. Although hard to find outside of a very good french DVD edition from 2002 which is probably difficult to find nowadays, The Mission is a classic worthy of spending the time necessary to get a copy any way possible. Hopefully this gem will be reissued at some point. Additional resources Our contact details Bronze HK on Twitter (in English) @Hororo on Twitter (in French and English)
| Episode three - Eastern condors (1987) | 31 May 2023 | 01:45:09 | |
Episode three! And this time we are switching to another legend of Hong Kong's cinema with Sammo Hung's Eastern Condors, a movie he stared in and directed alongside his future wife Joyce Godenzi. This war movie set in Vietnam tells the story of twelve convicts forced to accomplish a dangerous mission. The movie follows some American tropes and switches between comedy and drama in-between some incredible action scenes. | Episode Two - Royal Warriors (1986) | 12 Apr 2023 | 02:05:13
For this second episode, we are following Michelle Yeoh's career after Yes, Madam and moving to Royal Warriors, alongside Michael Wong (Z Storm, City Hunter) and Hiroyuki Sanada (John Wick 4, Ringu) for an action movie that's full of fridging and memorable action scenes but low on character development and directed by three pair of hands, one official and two "unofficial". | Episode One - Yes, Madam (1985) | 13 Mar 2023 | 01:36:22
This is our first episode and to introduce our podcast, we are talking about Yes, Madam from 1985, Oscar Winner Michelle Yeoh's (Everything Everywhere All At Once, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) first action movie in Hong Kong as lead actress and martial artist Cynthia Rothrock (Lady Dragon, Righting Wrongs). Yes, Madam is responsible for starting the trend of Girl with Guns movies where women were the leading stars. Additional resources Our contact details @Hororo on Twitter (in French and English)
| Episode Seventee - In the line of duty 3 (1988) | 24 Sep 2024 | 01:35:09 | |
We started this podcast with the In the line of duty movies (Yes, Madam and then Royal warrior) so it only made sense to finally cover the third in the series. This third entry is simply called In the line of duty 3 as the series had been sold to the US market as In the line of duty 1 (Royal Warrior) and Yes, Madam (In the line of duty 2). The numbering would be later changed to fit more with the order in which they were produced and released in Hong Kong, but this one is the third installment and features some returning faces, but a brand new lead, Cynthia Khan, alongside a japanese actor, Hiroshi Fujioka. Together, they will be fighting a couple of thieves motivated by love and communism. This was a brand new start for the series as it was Cynthia Khan's first Hong Kong feature and as you can imagine, we had lots to say about it. | Episode Sixteen - Hommage to Cheng Pei-pei, Corey Yuen and Long Arm of the Law 1 (1984) | 29 Aug 2024 | 02:12:43
We had decided to cover only Long arm of the Law for this episode last month but unfortunate news caught up with us and forced us to add a longer introduction to this episode. After a short conversation around AI and its impact on how we watch movies, we then move to talking about Cheng Pei-pei, an incredible actress who gave so much to Hong Kong cinema and sadly passed away on 17th July 2024. We then move to a filmmaker we hold close to our heart as we covered several of his movies in previous episodes (Yes, madam in episode 1 and Righting wrongs in episode 8) and who appeared in several others movies we spoke about (Eastern condors in episode 3, Iceman cometh in episode 14). Corey Yuen. A true legend of Hong Kong cinema whose name should be more well known. Finally, our movie of choice for this episode is none other than the recently reissued Long Arm of the Law. A 1984 crime movie directed by Johnny Mak, whose career was very limited, and written by the ex cop Philip Chan. Long arm of the law might have ended up being a cult classic for many as its notoriety is limited to fans of Hong Kong cinema but its a noteworthy release for its mix of action and gritty realism around a cast of loveable but flawed misfits desperate to make a life of their own in Hong Kong. | Episode Fifteen - The Seventh Curse (1986) | 24 Jul 2024 | 01:24:42
Its's a new first in the history of this podcast, because this time we are covering a recommendation from one of our listener, so don't hesitate to do the same because, as you can see, we listen! Plus, it just happened that neither of us had seen this movie, so we had the pleasure of discovering another movie featuring Wong-jin's talent as a scriptwriter to adapt two of famous novelist, script writer and talk show host, Ni Kuang's creation, Dr Yuen (played here by Siu Ho-chin from Mr Vampire) and Wisely (played by Chow-yun fat). The two heroes, or mostly Dr Yuen to be honest, embark on an adventure influenced by the same pulp stories that gave birth to Indiana Jones, featuring a few monsters and some gore. A truly exciting movie with subtle nods to various production for an original results fans of adventure stories, pulp and just all out Hong Kong cinema creativity will enjoy. | Episode fourteen - The Iceman Cometh (1989) | 26 Jun 2024 | 01:58:26
We are back to talking about one movie, but there is a catch! This time, we are talking about one half of this podcast's experience in acting and training on how to handle weapons! For the first half of the episode, Wing tells all about what kind of training he recently went through to master various weapons on stage and what does it mean to fight an opponent when you are fighting in front of a camera or an audience. We then move to our movie of choice, namely another classic featuring Yuen Biao, The Iceman Cometh. Directed in 1989 by Clarence Fok, it features also Maggie Cheung (Police Story, In the mood for love..) and Yuen Wah (Kung Fu Hustle, Eastern Condors...) and tells a complex revenge story with a lot of humour, fighting and gruesome murders. The kind of amazing cocktail we adore. As you will hear at the beginning of the episode, this one does come with a trigger warning as it features a characters whose main trait, outside of laughing like a maniac, is to murder and rape. However, the movie does not feature any explicit rape scene, neither does it have any rape joke. | Episode Twelve - Monkey man (2024) and Taxi Hunter (1993) | 24 Apr 2024 | 02:02:45
Its another double feature! Dev Patel's directorial debut just came out and we could not stop ourselves from talking about its hong kong influences as well as what the movie brings to a table crowded with John Wick wannabes. Spoiler alert, we don't think its a John Wick type movie, but come find out what else we have to say about it. Then, we follow it with a look into Taxi Hunter, a 1993 "category 3" movie directed by Herman Yau and featuring the legendary Anthony Wong. Its a movie with a lot of charm but also a good occasion to look into Category 3 movies, what they are, and the movie's lineage in the vigilante genre alongside Martin Scorcese's Taxi Driver released in 1976 and Joel Schumacher's Falling down, also released in 1993! | Episode Eleven - Dragon Ball & Magic Crystal (1986) | 26 Mar 2024 | 01:59:39
Hey, your favourite podcast is back but this time our "intro" counts for so much of the actual episode we decided it would be a double bill since we could not mention how much Akira Toriyama, the genius and legendary mangaka who passed away earlier this month, influenced us. So, to start of the episode, we talk for an hour about what Dragon Ball, Dr Slump, Dragon Quest and his influences did to us, and we hope you'll forgive this disruption to our usual conversation about Hong Kong cinema as it felt important to us to remember such an important part of our childhood. Following our tribute, we are talking about the movie Magic Crystal, an action/scifi/comedy by none other than Wong Jing (God of Gamblers) featuring Andy Lau, Cynthia Rothrock and many more. This adventure takes from many sources as you will hear but end up an interesting ride and a good excuse to talk about this director's output and a more commercial side of Hong Kong cinema . As always, thank you for listening and let us know via our various pages what you thought of the episode. Additional resources: We hope you enjoy! | Episode Ten - Prison on Fire (1987) | 20 Feb 2024 | 01:56:12
We are back, and with a gift! On our tenth episode, we are not only covering Ringo Lam's 1987 classic prison drama, Prison on fire, but we are also offering you to win a copy of L'Incendiaire, a deep dive into Ringo Lam's career, by french journalist Sebastian Lecoq. The caveat? Its in french, so only a few of our listeners will be interested, so... sorry about that? But, if you want this book for yourself or for someone else, keep listening until the end of the episode (or skip, that's also possible, I guess) . Now, back to Prison on Fire. A harrowing movie featuring our idol, the one and only, Chow Yun-fat and the nonetheless excellent Tony Ka Fei Lung. This classic might not be as well known internationally as its predecessor, City on Fire, but its an unforgettable piece of cinema history and a prime example of Ringo Lam's talent as a director. We hope you enjoy. We aimed to record and release this new episode before the end of the new year but instead we are kicking off 2025 with our episode about James Wong's The One, featuring Jet Li. The movie about travelling through different dimensions before travelling through dimensions was cool! Take that Michelle Yeoh and Marvel movies! But, as its now customary, you will also hear us talk about loosely related movies we watched too, like its the 1963 american comedy Its a mad mad mad mad world featuring Spencer Tracy, Mickey Rooney or Ethel Merman and some of the most impressive real stunts imagineable at the time, and a forgotten gem, Broken path (also known as Attack of the yakuza), an action film from 2008 featuring Johnny Yong Bosch (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and tons of voice acting). | Episode Twenty two - Chungking Express (1994) | 24 Apr 2025 | 02:11:51
You might not have guessed it from looking at the movies we talked about for the last two seasons but we actually always intended to cover other sort of Hong Kong movies than the action or genre ones. The timing was never right, there were always ideas, or maybe we didn't feel ready yet? Well, guess what? We are now, and we are covering Chungking Express from the beloved, and equally criticized, Wong Kar-Wai. Released in 1994 and shot while editing Dung che sai duk/Ashes of Time, Chungking Express is an incredible movie about two love stories. You might also notice the lack of introduction about other random subjects in this episode, but fear not dear listener, as we kept those for the end simply because... we forgot? We know, we are late once again but we have come back with an episode jam packed with movies for your listening pleasure. Plus, you might notice we have created chapters for this episode so you will have an easier time navigating through the hour and a half conversation. To start off, we cover a few movies such as Drew Hancock's Companion (2025), Steven SoderberghThe Presence (2024) and the J-Horror phenomenon around the characters featured in Sadako and Kayako (2016). Then, we move to a quick conversation around Marvel's Captain America - Brave New World before recommending two books, Film Korea by Michael Leader and Jake Cunningham (published in english by Wellbeck Publishing and in french by Ynnis Edition) and Wrath of the Dragon - Real life fights of Bruce Lee by John Little (published in english by ECW Press). Finally, we move to our main conversation of the episode around Brandy Yuen's The Champions featuring a young Yuen Biao, Moon Lee and Dick Wei. This early contender to the title of martial art soccer comedy leads us to talk about various other things including Captain Tsubasa, the more obscure Moreo Top Striker (aka L'ecole des champions in France), and Bernard Tapi's duet with the rapper Doc Gyneco.
