Episode 64: Size Matters: 6+ Tips To Adjust Going Up or Down In Canvas Size23 Apr 202400:30:34

Size matters…with your art.

So many artists think that just because they have a little skin in the game, they also need to size up their work. But that's not true AT ALL.

Size doesn't necessarily equate to success. In fact, there's a lot to consider before you start creating bigger pieces of work, and it may not be right for you depending on what kind of business you want to run.

But if you're curious about working with bigger canvases, and getting them to sell, this episode is for you!

Episode 60: How to Become Your Future Self26 Mar 202400:17:53

On this episode, I'm challenging the notion that, in order to be happy, we have to have the things we want. Instead, what if we focused on being the person who made those things possible?

As artists, we're so often holding ourselves back from happiness because we don't "have" our goals yet. We don't have a gallery show, we don't have collectors, we don't have a daily creative practice. The reality is, though, that we have to work on ourselves to make sure we're the person who can make those goals a reality.

We can't find satisfaction with our art (or our lives!) until we settle the score with ourselves. We have to BE the person who can achieve those goals we set for ourselves.

Not sure what I mean or how you can flip the script from "having" to "being"? That's what we cover in this episode, along with challenging your goals (why have you set them?) and figuring out WHO you need to be to attain those goals.

This is a juicy one, so don't miss out!

Episode 58: My Best Tips for Creating Abstract Art12 Mar 202400:21:15

What does it mean when a piece of art "has it"? When you hear people say, "I get it"? To someone who doesn't understand abstract art, it can feel like everyone else is speaking a language you don't — but I'm here to break down what makes abstract art great.

The truth is, abstract art is about so much more than technique and skill. They're important, sure, but there's something much greater at play. It all comes down to doing the inside work before you get to work on the canvas. It's about sharing the message that only you can share!

That's what can make abstract art speak directly to people — even when there's nothing "physical" represented on the canvas.

But how can you, as an artist, tap into your most-important message and share it on a canvas? That's what I'll be talking about in this episode,

Episode 57: Do You Fear Failing With Your Art? Or Do You Fear Success?05 Mar 202400:13:28

What's keeping you stuck? Is it your fear of failure? Or your fear of success?

Or maybe — and hear me out on this one — it's the fear of something else entirely. Something we're using "fear" and "success" as a blanket term for when really it's a bigger, more personal, more important concern.

On this episode of the show, I'm talking about why the fear of success and the fear of failure as an artist stems from something so much deeper — and I'll be showing you how to discover what that means for YOU.

Episode 53: 10 Common Abstract Art Mistakes to Avoid06 Feb 202400:29:45

There's nothing quick and easy about abstract expressionist art.

We MUST avoid falling into the trap of thinking that our most honest art can come in "5 minutes or less." This isn't a hot and ready pizza — this is FINE art.

Still, staring at a blank canvas can get frustrating. But that rut may be because you're making one of the 10 mistakes I'm sharing in this episode.

Trust me, avoiding these abstract art mistakes can make all the difference in your art — and can help you get your groove back so you create your best work.

Episode 52: How to Find Your Unique Style as an Artist30 Jan 202400:21:16

What do you think makes your work unique as an artist? Is it the style you paint in, like abstract work or oil pastel paintings? Or is it something much deeper than that?

I'll spoil this one for you: It's so much deeper than your "style." What makes your artwork unique is your voice, the thing that is pulled through any type of art you create. From style to style and medium to medium, your voice is the commonality between it all.

But what IS your voice and how do you find it so you can create your most honest art? I'm digging into all of that in this episode.

Episode 44: Top Tips for Overcoming Rejection and Criticism as an Artist28 Nov 202300:22:56

Rejection: What can we learn from it?

THAT is the question we need to be asking, not "How can I avoid rejection?" Because we can't — failure and rejection are just parts of life. It's also a part of your journey as an artist.

Rejection doesn't mean you suck. Hell, even the greats faced failure and rejection. Any time you fall down, it simply means you're showing the eff up (and learning along the way). But to reap all the benefits and lessons that come from experiencing rejection, you have to first shift your mindset.

Failure can easily knock us down, but it's how we get up that counts. And in this episode, I'll show you a few ways to do that (as someone who has experienced rejection many, many times).

If you want to improve your skills and create your best art, if you want to take things to that next level, you HAVE to be consistent. You have to actively face down creative blocks and challenges that try to prevent you from picking up that brush, pen, clay, what have you.

And sometimes, that means exploring topics that are a little more "taboo." Because that y'all, is what makes honest art!

Which brings us to a question so many in the art world want answered: What happens to honest art when we add certain…substances (*wink wink*)…to the mix? Can substances really help us be more creative?

Episode 38: 5 Things to Do Today to Enhance Your Art Sales & Creativity17 Oct 202300:18:37

What's the one thing you need to create your best art — and sell more of it? Believe it or not, it's not the most advanced art techniques or a business school degree. It's… a spiritual practice. Before you roll your eyes, hear me out. A spiritual practice (or a self-care routine, if you prefer) is one the BEST ways to consistently hit your creative flow, and sell your best art.

I'll prove it to you, too. In this episode, I'm taking a look at five things that can help us build spiritual practices and boost creativity. Things like:

  • Meditation

  • Journaling

  • Nature

  • Affirmations

  • Abundance Meditation

Episode 36: How Music Impacts Creativity03 Oct 202300:17:05

Can music boost creativity? Absolutely! Can it help us as artists make our best, most honest art? Eh…not so fast.

I'm a HUGE music lover, but I have guidelines I like to abide by when adding music to the creative process.

No, it's not about pressing play on one genre over the other. It's about making sure your music is in alignment with your mood. You can't bypass the emotional process (aka putting on happy music when you're in a funk) if you want to make your most honest work.

So in this episode, we're taking a deeper look into WHY music helps us create, and how to use music (and dancing!) to create our best art yet.

Do you know when to walk away from your art?

No matter how long you've been painting or how much natural talent you have, there WILL come a time when you don't know what that next right move is. But instead of forcing the creativity out of you, you need to know when to put down the paintbrush and walk away.

In this episode, I talk about how to know when it's time to do that, plus:

  • Why playing it safe is keeping you stuck

  • How to know when it's time to get back to the canvas

  • Why understanding the creative process, start to finish, can help you decide the next right thing to do

For years, getting my art into a gallery was how I defined success as an artist. It was all I wanted to do. It was my number one priority and I hustled hard to make it happen.

But to my surprise, it didn't happen overnight like I WANTED it to. It actually took an entire DECADE after I started my art career.

Because I know gallery shows are probably a goal you have too, I wanted to share my best tips for staying patient and making it happen. If you want your work to be noticed, this episode will show you how to get your art into a gallery.

Episode 32: Artwork Archive: The Business Tool I Can't Live Without05 Sep 202300:33:45

Software is an important part of any business. But does it have a place in YOUR art biz? Absolutely. Full disclosure, I use a ton of different softwares to help me out — from podcast management to team calls, accounting, and more.

There is one software/tool, however, that stands above the crowd. It's the ONE thing I can't live without in my art biz. Why? Because it makes it easy for us artists to track our artwork, showcase our portfolios, and grow our business.

What am I talking about? Artwork Archive!

And for this special episode, I brought on Katie Carey, Head of Content and Growth at Artwork Archive, to show y'all how helpful this tool can be for ANY artist!

Think it's too early to think about your holiday art sales?

It's never too early. Even as an artist, you need plenty of time to plan a collection, give yourself space to create, and promote it to potential buyers. All of that takes time and will slide by faster than you think.

So in this episode, I'm covering what exactly you should be doing NOW to prepare for selling your art during the holidays.

Even if you're not selling a holiday collection (or are listening to this post-holiday season), these strategies and tips can help you whenever you launch!

Episode 29: Art Critiques: It's More Than Just Being Told You Suck15 Aug 202300:15:13

What's better as an artist; positive feedback or criticism? BOTH! You need positive feedback to feel supported and find the motivation to continue on with your work. But you also need "negative" (aka constructive) criticism to learn how to grow as an artist.

But that doesn't mean it doesn't hurt! After all, you pour your heart and soul into your work. You can't help but feel that type of critique is personal, right?

That's why in this episode, I'm going to talk about how we can learn to embrace seemingly "negative" feedback, how to hold onto positive feedback, and why you should hold neither in too high of regard!

Episode 73: The Importance of Connecting With Other Artists, Ft. Studio Elite Members25 Jun 202400:28:04

Being an artist is vulnerable work. Slinging paint away in the studio for hours on end, trying to pull what's in your mind out onto the canvas… It can become heavy after a while.

That's why we need a community of fellow artists to support us, which is part of why I created my Studio Elite artist mastermind. We aren't meant to walk this artist's path alone.

Wondering how an artist mastermind could change your approach to your art (or your art biz)? Not sure a mastermind is right for you? Listen to what current Studio Elite members have to say about the community they've built and what else they've taken away from the program. They've had some truly amazing transformations — and they've built artist connections that will last for years to come.

Episode 27: B.S. Creative Myths We Tell Ourselves01 Aug 202300:19:33

Welcome to season two of the Honest Art Podcast! Let's get right into it with a deep one — myths about creativity. Really, I'd call them lies, because they're straight-up NOT true.

But it's something every artist and creative will experience at one point or another, so in this episode, I talk about things like:

  • Why we believe these lies in the first place

  • How fear plays a role in the propagation of these myths

  • Creating time to show up and stand tall in front of that canvas

Episode 26: Screw Work/Life Balance — Do THIS Instead27 Jun 202300:24:29

I'm going to go bold here and say as artists, there's no such thing as balance. The lines between work and play are constantly getting blurred because our work IS play.

And when you're trying to juggle creating the best work you possibly can, work you're PROUD of, with all the responsibilities that come with running a business…you really need something besides balance. You need ALIGNMENT.

That's why in this episode I talk about:

  • Why all things do not contribute equal amounts to our lives

  • Determining priorities as an artist

  • Creating whitespace to keep the creative energy alive

Episode 25: The Imperative of Freedom and Flexibility with Keren Toledano20 Jun 202300:47:59

As artists (and creatives) we tend to feel like our work is an extension of ourselves. But my guest on this episode, Keren Toledano, makes a really good point…not to hold on to your work too tight. You need to hold onto it with open hands if you want to experience the much-needed freedom and flexibility to be an artist!

Why? That's what we'll get into on the show, plus…

  • How your style as an artist evolves as you do

  • Why your work is not your identity (I.E. it's okay if it changes!)

  • Getting vulnerable and selling your work
