Luminous Minds was founded and created by Chandra Roughton (Ms. Chandra), a passionate educator/teacher and lifelong learner for over 24 years. Ms. Chandra has been inspiring, educating, and effectively teaching children throughout her entire career. Many know her as being a change agent and advocate for what is best for kids. Chandra graduated from Fresno State with a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership and Administration. She continues to lead teacher development trainings and workshops to help other educators improve their practice and learn about evidence-based practices incorporating the elements and findings in the Science of Reading. She has worked tirelessly to close the existing achievement gaps in our educational system, all for the benefit of ensuring all children receive the high-quality education they deserve. Three days later, while I was in and out of plastic surgery to put my face back on in the hospital, Jazz was hit by lightning in her pasture and killed. I was devastated. Season 2- Episode 50 On this episode, teacher, Ruth, shares the importance of making learning fun, the need to be able to effectively communicate an idea, her catalog of books, the long-term effects of social media, the value in trusting your kids, some of the life skills we should focus on building up in our kids, and ensuring that kids put more focus on the solution than the problem. http://www.artbyruth.com/ Award-winning artist and author Ruth A. Douthitt has been drawing and writing since an early age. An Arizona native, she first was inspired by her fourth grade teacher to learn more about the fine arts and to make it her life's endeavor. Later, her high school English teacher entered her poetry into a contest that she won. Her art teacher gave her many challenging class assignments that helped her win two scholarships to study art in college. She has had a one-woman show in New Bern, North Carolina where she and her husband were stationed with the USMC. It was there that Ruth developed a love of wildlife art and drawing animals. She did "pet portraits" while working at Ballantyne Framing & Art. She also was able to sell her watercolors there as well. Back in Arizona, she began painting portraits of children. First she started painting friend's kids and pets, but that grew into a business. Her commissions increased thanks to positive "word of mouth" reviews from clients. Her clients range from Police officers, lawyers, and Superior court Judges to stay-at-home moms and grandmothers: all wanting realistic portraits of their beloved children or grandchildren. It was around this time that Ruth drafted a story she had in mind ever since her time in North Carolina...a story about dragons. She completed her B.A. in Visual Arts from ASU and a Masters degree in Education from University of Phoenix. Ruth has taught art at Glendale Community College and is a member of the Arizona Watercolor Association. She finally had her first book published in 2011, "The Dragon Forest." Since then, she has had several more books released, including the 2017 Moonbeam Children's Book Award Bronze Medal award-winning "The Children" series. As an award-winning author of books for middle grade readers, Ruth decided to blend her art and her writing. She has illustrated many books: "The White Wolf," "Dragon Games," "Dragon Riders," and "The Road to Home." In 2023, she released her first coloring book! She plans on releasing many more...And, finally after 34 years in the making, she released her first picture book, "Peter and the Dragon Forest," with illustrations by her husband. Later in life, I went back to school and received a second master’s degree in educational psychology. I have a passion for children, and I understand that setting children up for success later in life begins in the home. Working in home health and Greenville County Schools as a speech-language pathologist has taught me a lot about the impact a child’shome life can have on future success. Helping children see the possibilities in life has always been my passion. I was blessed to have a solid upbringing with lots of exposure to education, travel, and different cultures and experiences and wanted these opportunities to be available to all children. Though I graduated as a civil engineer, following in my father’s footsteps, my mother had a Master’s Degree in Social Work so I was always passionate about mentoring and sharing knowledge. The power of the mind fascinated me and I learned as much as I could about harnessing our innate power to create miracles in our lives. During the 2008 financial incident, I adopted my son Jonathan at birth. This incident also allowed me the time to be a mother while studying hypnosis as a tool to harness the power of the subconscious mind. I trained and became a Master Hypnotherapist and was soon transforming people’s lives. Having been raised in Jamaica, I saw that the American culture did not promote a lot of the core values with which I was raised, such as self-reliance, a determination to be happy and succeed, and an appreciation for the simple things in life which make life such a rich experience. This inspired me to share these values with my community, which I have been proactively been doing since 2010. The greatest gift which has come out of the 2020 incident is that humanity has returned to living in community. My son was home with me and we began homeschooling. I have always wanted to be the number one influence in my son’s life, so this was a dream come true. He is also the Special Advisor to the Provost on Diversity Initiatives and an Associate Professor of Sociology at McDaniel College in Westminster, MD who specializes in the Sociology of race, racism and religion. In addition to being a committed teacher of God’s word, he is an active speaker, writer, and consultant on Christian living, race/racism, social justice and Black culture and has led trainings, focus groups, and discussions about current racial and cultural issues. While he has many accomplishments, his most important ones, besides being a Christ follower, include being married to his beautiful and brilliant wife of twenty years, Camille, and having three amazing children. Season 2- Episode 29 On this episode, Black Students Fund's member, Leroy Nesbitt, shares the importance of 'parent choice', the definition and necessity of 'equity', the benefits of technology in education, the future of education, and the limitless possibilities of Afro-Futuristic thinking. https://www.blackstudentfund.org/ Leroy Nesbitt, Jr. is a social engineer and lawyer with more than thirty years experience in the education arena. Leroy Nesbitt, Jr. is a graduate of Middlebury College and Howard University School Of Law. Following his graduation from law school he clerked for the Honorable George W. Mitchell, Associate Judge Superior Court of the District of Columbia. He then returned to Howard University serving as associate general counsel and directing the Moot Court Team at the School of Law. His work in the education arena continued at his undergraduate alma mater Middlebury College as Special Assistant to the President. He presently serves as Executive Director of the Black Student Fund. During his more than thirty years in the education industry Leroy has worked as arbitrator, lawyer, professor, administrator, programmer and consultant. He has worked with colleges in nine states and high schools in more than forty cities. Leroy has served as the General Counsel for the DC Chapter of Concerned Black Men, Inc.; Treasurer, Dianne Princess of Wales Memorial Fund (US), Board member of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges; Education Transition committee of Mayor Sharon Pratt Kelly and Board Member Stride: The Wright Foundation for Female Athletes. Board member of the Daniel Alexander Payne Community Development Corporation; Program chair for the DC-Maryland -Virginia, Athletes in Action and a consultant for College For Every Student. During his thirty years in education Leroy has worked to address underrepresentation of people of color and women in STEM. Working in collaboration with the New England Board of Higher Education Leroy launched an effort to place students at Vermont colleges in graduate and doctoral programs in STEM. He advises the Percy Julian Institute Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Medicine program of the Daniel Alexander Payne Community Development Corporation working with middle school students. At the Black Student Fund he created BSF STEM and gaming develop program teaching kids how to code. He is married to Dr. Debony Hughes and has two daughters Nina and Malayna. Leroy has a Black Memorabilia collection with more than 500 items.
