Lanada Chanel Duncan wants to influence the way people live and experience wellbeing in their homes. She believes interior design is meant to do that.
When she put her design skills and business savvy to good use and founded b.e. decors Interiors (beachy earthtones) after an unexpected health scare in 2015, one of the first projects her design firm did was transform a spare bedroom in her home into a tranquil lounge and workspace which Lanada calls her She-Cave.
For the past 7 years, she has helped others achieve their definition of wellness using color psychology and biophilic design to style peaceful, cozy rooms that foster a sense of comfort and refuge and evoke feelings of rejuvenation.
Through collaborations with select craftsmen, Lanada uses interior design techniques to create comfortable, modernized spaces that are holistically and aesthetically pleasing to her clients.
From design conception to completion, her firm works intentionally to ensure finished spaces not only reflect the style and personality of the homeowner but also support the idea and feeling of home and what it means to dwell in peace.

Universal Design (UD) is a holistic approach aimed at creating spaces and products that are accessible, understandable, and usable by everyone, irrespective of age, size, or physical capability. The objective extends beyond mere accessibility to encompass usability, comprehension, and enjoyment. For the hospitality sector, especially in catering to Baby Boomers, this translates to designs that are both aesthetically appealing and functional for all guests. Key principles of UD include:
1. Equitable Use: Designs should cater to people with varied abilities, like ensuring wheelchair accessibility for entrances and providing elevators.
2. Flexibility in Use: Accommodate diverse preferences, such as adjustable bed heights and both walk-in showers and bathtubs.
3. Simple and Intuitive Use: Designs should be straightforward, exemplified by clear signage and user-friendly fixtures.
4. Perceptible Information: Effective communication of essential information, using visual, tactile, and auditory cues.
5. Tolerance for Error: Minimize risks of unintended actions, like using non-slip flooring in bathrooms.
6. Low Physical Effort: Ensure designs require minimal effort, such as using lever door handles over traditional ones.
7. Size and Space for Approach and Use: Ensure ample space for everyone, like wide corridors for wheelchair users.
By adhering to these principles, the hospitality industry can provide an inclusive environment that meets the needs, preferences, and abilities of Baby Boomers, enhancing customer satisfaction and fostering brand loyalty, leading to business growth.

In this episode of our podcast, we delve into the inspiring story of Hope Renovations - an organization that stands at the intersection of women's empowerment, senior care, and the booming construction industry.
Kat Reach, the Director of Construction Operations tells us their story. The journey began ten years ago when the founder and CEO of Hope Renovations, Nora Spencer, MSW, then working in HR at Lowe's corporate headquarters, found a passion for DIY home repairs and renovations.
Yet, she noticed a distinct lack of women in the trades, which sparked her curiosity. However, as she expanded her hobby and began working on small renovations alongside contractors and tradespeople she began to wonder... where were all the women?
She decided to leave the corporate world 10 years later to pursue a Master of Social Work from UNC, Nora encountered many capable women during her internship at a local homeless shelter.
Many expressed that they had never been taught trade skills or considered it as a viable career path, viewing it as a man's job. This insight planted the seed for Hope Renovations.
The organization truly took shape when Nora Spencer learned about the Aging-in-Place trend - the fastest-growing segment in the construction industry yet one struggling with capacity issues.
In response, Hope Renovations was born with a mission to empower women by equipping them with construction skills, thus breaking them free from low-wage jobs and narrowing the gender pay gap.
Simultaneously, the organization caters to seniors needing repairs and renovations to stay in their homes comfortably, thereby creating a dedicated workforce for this burgeoning market.
This insightful episode explores how Hope Renovations is not only reshaping perceptions about women in the construction industry but also addressing a critical need in our aging society.
As our guest, Kat Reach shares, it's a win-win-win situation - benefitting women, seniors, and the economy at large.

Remodeling a home for aging in place is an important decision that requires careful planning and budgeting.
Home renovation costs for aging in place can vary greatly depending on the size of the project, materials used, and labor costs.
There are many factors to consider when estimating how much it will cost to remodel your home for aging in place, and it is important to do your research before making any final decisions.
This article will provide an overview of the costs associated with remodeling a home for aging in place and helpful tips to get you started on your project.
When planning a remodel for aging in place, there are several factors that can affect the overall cost of the project.
These include the size and scope of the remodel, materials needed for the project, labor costs associated with hiring a general contractor or other professionals to help with the work, and any additional accessories such as ramps or grab bars that may be required.
The location of your home and the local cost of materials and labor can also have an impact on the total project cost.
Most people are interested in a kitchen renovation and a bathroom renovation. The national average cost of a major renovation can vary widely depending on the home modifications you are looking for.
For example a kitchen remodel is usually more expensive than a bathroom remodel. Using high-end materials will obviously increase the cost further.
However, a whole house renovation is still often cheaper than moving to an assisted living facility.
"The good news is that the price tag on most remodeling projects is under $10,000, which is far less than what you might spend on a nursing home. The average cost for a semi-private room in a nursing home is $7,900 per month, while a private room costs more than $9,000 per month. A one-bedroom unit in an assisted living facility runs about $4,500 per month."
Universal Design For Bathrooms is an idea that has been gaining traction in recent years. Its aim is to make bathrooms more accessible for people with physical disabilities, as well as making them safer and more comfortable for everyone who uses them.
This concept applies to a variety of design elements, such as layout, fixtures and fittings, safety considerations, and more.
As an occupational therapist working in the home health sector for over 10 years, I experienced first hand how the bathroom can greatly limit a persons independence, quality of life, and jeopardize their health.
Universal Design for kitchens is a concept that is becoming increasingly popular, especially with baby boomers. It takes into account the physical and cognitive abilities of people of all ages and abilities, and creates an environment where everyone can be comfortable and safe in their kitchen. As an Occupational therapist working in the home health sector, I came across clients that were forced to move in with a relative or an assisted living because they could no longer prepare meals for themselves safely. Incorporating aging in place design and Universal Design features in your kitchen design, will allow you to remain independent and safe in your home, for a longer period of time or for the rest of your life.
