This Isn’t Goodbye… Just a Little Pause.”05 oct. 202600:04:12

Hi everyone, and welcome to Home Design Chat with Nancy. I’m Nancy.

Today’s episode is going to be a little different because, instead of talking about kitchens, bathrooms, remodeling, design trends or all the other things we normally talk about, I have a little announcement to make.

I’ve decided to put Home Design Chat with Nancy on hiatus.  It’s time for me to take a little pause.

I’ve been doing this show for quite a while now, and when I started Home Design Chat with Nancy, I never imagined how many conversations we would have or how many people would eventually listen. And I have to tell you — I have loved doing it.

I’ve loved talking about design. I’ve loved having guests join me. I’ve loved discussing everything from kitchens and bathrooms to flooring, windows, outdoor spaces, remodeling mistakes, design trends and all those little things homeowners don't always think about until it’s too late. But sometimes, even when you love something, you need to step back and take a breath.

This is not goodbye. It’s a pause. I want to take some time to think about what I want the next chapter of Home Design Chat with Nancy to be.

Maybe it will come back exactly as it has been. Maybe it will come back a little differently. Maybe there will be some new ideas, new conversations and some subjects I haven’t tackled yet.

I’m not going to make any promises about exactly when I’ll be back — because I’ve learned that sometimes the best things happen when you don't put yourself on a deadline. But I do want you to know that I’m not disappearing.

There are still plenty of ways to find me and my design ideas. And if you’re new to the show, this is actually a great time to go back and listen to some of the previous episodes. There are a lot of them!

You can find Home Design Chat with Nancy and my other design information through NancyHugo.com and Designers Circle. You can also find my list of podcasts on Spotify, iHeart radio and apple to name a few.  And to all of you who have listened over the years — thank you.

Thank you for spending part of your day with me. Thank you for listening to my opinions, even when you didn't necessarily agree with me. And thank you for trusting me to talk about something I have been passionate about for a very long time — making homes beautiful, functional and, most importantly, right for the people who live in them.

I've always said that good design isn't just about what looks good. It's about how you live. And I hope I’ve helped you look at your home a little differently.

So, for now, I’m going to take a little break. I’m going to step away from the microphone, give myself some time to think, and see where this next chapter takes me. And who knows? I may surprise you. So this isn't goodbye to Home Design Chat with Nancy. It’s simply… “See you later.”

Until then, keep designing, keep asking questions, and remember — your home should work for you, not the other way around.

Thank you for listening. And when I’m ready to start talking design with you again…

Window Treatment Mistakes Homeowners Make — And How to Get Them Right27 sept. 202600:30:02

Hi everyone, and welcome to Home Design Chat with Nancy and I’m Nancy! today we're continuing our conversation about something every homeowner has to deal with at some point—window treatments.

If you listened to Part 1 of our conversation, you already know there is a lot more to choosing window coverings than simply picking something that looks pretty.

We talked about the different types of window treatments, materials, custom versus ready-made, privacy, light control, and some of the choices homeowners need to think about before they make a purchase.

Today, we're continuing that conversation with Jack Kim with Arizona Blinds Company, about something I think every homeowner needs to hear about: the mistakes people make when choosing window treatments.

Because you can spend a lot of money on beautiful shades, shutters, blinds or draperies—and still end up with something that doesn't work for the room.

Maybe the curtains are hung too low. Maybe the rods are too short. Maybe the fabric isn't right for the amount of sunlight coming through the window. Or perhaps nobody thought about privacy, furniture placement, or even how the window treatment is going to look when it's completely open.

And then we're going to get into some of the things homeowners are asking for right now—including motorized window treatments, natural materials, new styles and what's beginning to look dated.

So if you're thinking about replacing your window coverings, remodeling a room, or building a new home, you're going to want to hear this part.

Our topics today are:

  • Top 5 design mistakes homeowners make
  • What's Trending for window treatments in 2027
  • Best choice for a tight budget
  • Dated window treatments

I hope you enjoyed today’s topic. If you have any questions, email me at Nancy@nancyhugo.com.  And please share these podcasts with your friends.  Everyone can you a little education in design.

Home Design Mistakes You Don’t Notice Until You Live in Your Home21 sept. 202600:25:03

Hi everyone, and welcome to Home Design Chat with Nancy..   and I’m Nancy!

A our subject today is something that I think every homeowner can relate to.   It’s those little design mistakes that you don't necessarily notice when you're looking at your plans, when you're shopping for your house, or even when your remodel is brand new.

But then you start living in the space. And suddenly you think:  “Why did we do that?” What were we thinking?  Have you ever had that happen?

But before we begin please subscribe on the platform you are using to listen to my podcasts.

As I chat about design mistakes you don't notice until you live in your home,  I want you to think about your own house as we're going through these. You may hear something and say, “Oh my gosh. I have that problem."

Common Mistakes:

  1. Not thinking about how you really live
  2. Not having enough storage
  3. Putting beauty before function
  4. Not thinking about lighting
  5. Not having enough outlets
  6. Doors that fight with each other
  7. Not thinking about where things go
  8. The wrong size furniture
  9. Forgetting about maintenance
  10. Designing for today and not tomorrow
  11. Not paying attention to the kitchen workflow
  12. Ignoring the little annoyances

Good design is about creating a home that works. It should support the way you live.

  • It should make everyday activities easier.
  • It should be comfortable.
  • It should be practical.
  • It should be beautiful, too.

But beauty and function don't have to compete. The best homes bring the two together.

Good design is about creating a home that works. It should support the way you live.

I hope you enjoyed today’s topic. If you have any questions, email me at Nancy@nancyhugo.com

And please share these podcasts with your friends.  Everyone can you a little education in design.

Kitchen Cabinets: The Details That Make All the Difference14 sept. 202600:32:17

Hi everyone, and welcome to Home Design Chat with Nancy, and I'm Nancy.

Before I get started on the topic of the day,  I would really appreciate it if you can you please subscribe to my podcast.

As I have said many times, I do podcasts to educate everyone about design & more.  Most people will look at models home, cabinet showrooms or pinterest and quickly notice the cabinet style and color.  The cabinet is more than a pretty door.  Construction is very important and so is the manufacturer who produced the cabinetry.

Jeff Hunt, co-owner of Hunt’s Kitchen & Design in Scottsdale, AZ.  is back with me because we have more to discuss about cabinets.

Just to summarize the first podcast we did on August 24th, we discussed wood species, face-frame cabinets vs frameless, Custom vs semi-custom vs stock cabinets.  I suggest you go back to listen to that one if you haven’t already.

At the end of this podcast, with Jeff’s help, you the homeowner should be able to open the cabinet door and drawer and decide the quality. And what to look for.

Topics of discussion:

  • The cabinet mistakes that are expensive to fix after installation
  • Cabinet Shelving - what to look for
  • Cabinet hardware finishes
  • Knobs vs handles
  • Is the Kitchen triangle dead?

A beautiful kitchen isn't necessarily a functional kitchen. You can have gorgeous cabinets, the perfect hardware, and every appliance you've ever wanted—but if you have to walk around an island three times to make a cup of coffee, something went wrong.

Good kitchen design isn't about following one rule or copying a kitchen you saw online. It's about understanding how you live, cook, entertain, and move through your kitchen.

Hope you enjoyed learning about cabinetry.  Please share these podcasts with your friends and subscribe on the platform that you use to listen to these podcasts.

Before You Buy Window Treatments: What Every Homeowner Needs to Know31 août 202600:32:38

Hi everyone and welcome back to Home Design Chat with Nancy where we talk about the things that make a home look great --but also make it work better.

Today we are talking about something that can completely change the look and feel of a room, yet is often one of the last things homeowners think about: window treatments.  And when I say window treatments, I'm talking about a lot more than curtains.

My guest today is Jack Kim, the owner of Arizona Blinds Company in Phoenix, Arizona. Jack knows window treatments inside and out.

We're going to take a close look at the choices homeowners have, the pros and cons of each, and what you really need to know before you buy.

We're also going to talk about something I think is especially important: window treatments aren't just about how a window looks. They can affect privacy, light, energy efficiency, comfort, and even how functional a room is.

I think we're going to discover that there is a lot more to choosing a window covering than walking into a store and saying, "I like that one!"

Our topics will include:

  • Common types of window coverings and the benefits of each.
  • Custom vs ready-made window treatments
  • Light and privacy
  • Layering window treatments
  • Motorization

There is so much more we wanted to talk about that time did not allow us to cover, so we are going to continue this subject in a few weeks.

Subscribe to Home Design Chat with Nancy so you don't miss everything about design especially if you are remodeling or building new.

Hi everyone and welcome back to Home Design Chat with Nancy.

Before I get started on the topic of the day, can you please subscribe to my podcast.  I would really appreciate it.

Today we're talking about an item that most of us probably don't think about very much. Cabinets.

There is more to cabinets then the pretty door.  There’s  construction, materials, hardware, finish, storage and much more that you will know  by the end of this podcast.

My guest today is Jeff Hunt, co-owner of Hunt’s Kitchen & Design in Scottsdale, AZ.  Jeff & his brother Josh prioritize their business in creativity, quality and personal connection.

Some of our talking points today:

  • Wood Species - does it really matter?
  • Is one wood better than the other
  • What is Rift Oak
  • Face-frame vs. Frameless - which one is better
  • Custom vs. semi-custom vs stock/box cabinets
  • Does custom cabinetry make your kitchen better?

There are more topics about cabinets that time did not allow us to cover so we are going to continue this subject on September 14th when Jeff will be back with me.

Be sure to listen to learn more interesting things about cabinets you should know.  Especially if you are remodeling or building new.

Do You Really Need a Big Microwave? 7 Kitchen Microwave Mistakes Homeowners Make17 août 202600:31:13

Hi Everyone and welcome back to Home Design Chat with Nancy.

If you are new to this podcast, I am Nancy Hugo, a certified kitchen designer, with a passion for design.

Today we're talking about an appliance that most of us probably don't think about very much.

The microwave. It's one of those things that's just...there. You put something in it, push a button, and a couple of minutes later, you're eating.

But when you're designing or remodeling a kitchen, the microwave can actually create some pretty interesting design questions.

The common questions are how big should it be & where should it go.

Here are the thoughts you should have when purchasing a microwave:

  • Do you really need an enormous microwave
  • When did bigger become better
  • What do you use the microwave for
  • Can you get away with a smaller microwave
  • The different types of microwaves
  • Where should the microwave go?
  • Are Microwaves safe?
  • Is smaller better?
  • The microwave mistakes

I hope you learned things about microwaves you didn't know. If you have any questions, email me at Nancy@nancyhugo.com

Dangerous Home Design Trends: When Beautiful Becomes Unsafe03 août 202600:20:30

Hi everyone, and welcome to Home Design Chat with Nancy, where we talk about the ideas, trends, and practical choices that make our homes more beautiful, functional, and livable.

Today we're talking about a subject that almost nobody in the design industry wants to discuss. Some of today's most beautiful homes are also some of the most dangerous. I recently saw a bathroom in Veranda magazine featuring a gorgeous tub designed by Gabriela Eisenhart  The topic of the article was about trends for 2027 that improve everyday living, so I thought this would be great to share with you on this podcast.

I have described the picture in depth to create an image of this room in your mind's eye.  I came to the conclusion that this is a very dangerous tub design and may look great in a photo but is not safe or practical. The picture on my post is of the bathroom in question. I have to give credit to the photographer:  William Abranowicz.

Let me know if I accomplished my objective about this tub design by emailing me your comments.

Kitchens also have safety issues which I talk about. Cooktops and stoves with no landing space, over-the-range microwaves, not enough walkway between islands and perimeter countertops and lack of lighting in kitchens are also hazard points discussed in this podcast.

I have pointed out dangerous and bad designs in several podcasts, but it worth reminding people who are looking to remodel that safety and function are as important as aesthetics.

Today Gil and I will talk about a very important aspect of cooking on your outdoor kitchen.  The safety factor.

Before we begin I am going to ask you to subscribe on the platform you use to listen to my podcasts

Planning an Outdoor Kitchen? Important Things to Know Before you Build13 juil. 202600:25:39

Welcome to Home Design Chat with Nancy! I’m Nancy  Before we begin I am going to ask you to subscribe on the platform you use to listen to my podcasts.

Have you noticed that summer is moving quickly so we have the perfect subject – trends for outdoor living. It is not just about a stand-a-lone grill on a concrete slab and a picnic table.  Outdoor living has become a, luxurious extension of the indoor home.

To break down exactly what is trending, what materials actually survive the elements, and how to design a spectacular outdoor culinary space, I have the perfect guest today. Joining me is Gil Olachea from Ceramica, Scottsdale, Arizona.

The biggest shift we’re seeing in 2026 is the transition to multiple cooking zones and methods or appliances, heavily mimicking how indoor kitchens are designed – something you know a bit about! Instead of just one primary grill doing all the heavy lifting or cooking in a gazebo, pergola or patio, layouts now include distinct zones for prep, cooking, baking, storage and serving.

Replacing the traditional grill, utensil cart(s) and fold-up table has become very popular trend.  I’ve seen outdoor kitchens that are better equipped and laid-out than their indoor kitchen.

The main topic of discussion was the aesthetic and surface materials for the outdoor kitchen.

The materials of choice are, primarily, easy clean & maintenance.  Aesthetic is a close second.  And material manufactures are attune to this so they’re making products that address both of these key aspects!  Such as porcelain, large-format tiles for the floors and complimenting surfaces for island & cabinet fascia.  Regarding color palettes, it becomes personal preference but the trends are leaning toward the warm earth tones.

We talked about best, high-performance countertop materials for an outdoor kitchen that won’t fade, crack, or burn someone’s hand when the sun hits it. We broke down the best materials in various parts of the country and what to avoid in each area.

We talked in depth about the materials today and wanted to spend enough time on the outdoor kitchen layouts and also the very important safety factors when you are planning your outdoor project.  That is why this topic will be continued on July 20th.  This is so important if you are planning to create an outdoor kitchen area.

Before You Remodel Your Kitchen… Listen to This First07 juil. 202600:33:36

Hi everyone, and welcome to Home Design Chat with Nancy. Before I start, I would like you to please subscribe on the platform you use to listen to my podcasts.

My subject today is one of the most exciting—and sometimes overwhelming—projects: a kitchen renovation.

Most homeowners who have ideas and plans to remodel their home don’t start the project in the middle of the summer when their kiddos are on summer break or when the family goes on vacation.

Instead, the remodel project starts in September right after summer vacation is over.

If you want your project to be completed for your Thanksgiving dinner or for the Christmas holidays, now is the time to start doing research.

The reality is that successful kitchen renovations begin long before demolition day, and definitely before you contract with a kitchen designer and a general contractor.

Today I'm going to walk you through the most important things to consider before you start your kitchen renovation so you can avoid costly mistakes, stay on budget, and end up with a kitchen you'll love for years to come.

These are questions you should ask yourself before you start your research:

  • Why do you want to remodel
  • What are your wants and needs
  • What is your realistic budget
  • Does your existing layout work for you
  • Do you have enough storage
  • Is your lighting adequate
  • Does your ventilation work
  • What appliances are on your wish list
  • Can you cope with disruption
  • Know what to look for in hiring professionals

Before you start your kitchen renovation, remember this: the best kitchens aren't necessarily the most expensive kitchens. They're the kitchens that work beautifully for the people who use them.

A successful kitchen renovation should improve your daily life every single day. That's what great design is all about.

Thank you for joining me today on Home Design Chat with Nancy.

5 Outdated Kitchen Design Trends We’re Glad Are Gone29 juin 202600:21:25

Hi everyone and welcome back to Home Design Chat with Nancy.  Can you believe that ½ the year is gone?

Please subscribe & comment on the platform you are using.  I would really appreciate it.

I was a little off schedule last week and didn’t get to do a podcast but I’ll make up for that by talking about a very interesting subject that every homeowner, designer, and remodeler has experienced at some point—and that is design regrets.

We’ve all had those moments where we look back and think:
“What was I thinking?”

But here’s the interesting thing about kitchen trends. Most trends aren’t actually bad when they first appear. In fact, many trends solve a problem happening at that specific time. They reflect what homeowners wanted emotionally, culturally, and even financially. The problem starts when trends become extreme.

And kitchens are especially vulnerable because they are expensive to remodel. Unlike paint colors or furniture, kitchens are long-term investments. So when a trend burns out quickly, homeowners are often stuck living with outdated choices for years.

Today I’m talking about five kitchen design fads we’re actually glad are gone—. Some of these trends completely dominated magazines, television shows, and model homes. Others were pushed heavily on social media. And while some still exist in smaller ways today, they’re no longer controlling kitchen design the way they once did.

Every era has trends. Twenty years from now, people may laugh at some of today’s kitchens too. What matters is understanding WHY these trends faded and what lessons we can learn before investing thousands into a remodel.

Here are the 5 trends to say good-bye to.  Listen to the entire podcast for my reason for each one:

  • Tiny Mosaic Tile Countertops
  • The Over-the-top Tuscan Kitchen Era
  • Appliances Garages
  • Extreme Open Shelving
  • All Gray Kitchens

The take-a-way from this podcast is that a beautiful kitchen is not just about appearance. It’s about how it functions for your life. Trends become dangerous when people stop asking practical questions, but the kitchens that survive trends the best are the ones designed around the homeowner—not around what’s currently viral online.

Maybe after this episode, you’ll look at old kitchen photos a little differently—and maybe even appreciate how much kitchen design continues to evolve.

If you are wondering if I had more technical problems because I didn’t publish my podcast last week.  No problems I just needed to take a time out, or as they say “I took a pause”  but I’m back. So lets get on with todays subject.

If you've been following home design for any length of time, you've probably noticed that trends come and go faster than ever.

One year everyone is painting everything gray. The next year gray is supposedly dead. Then we're told white kitchens are out, only to find thousands of beautiful white kitchens all over social media. My podcast on June 1st was on the white kitchen mystery.  I think in my opinion it was a very interesting podcast.

So today, we're going to talk about why trends return, why some disappear just as quickly as they arrive, and how homeowners can avoid spending a fortune chasing design fads.

  • Why Design Trends Repeat Themselves
  • Why Homeowners Get Excited About Old Ideas
  • The Social Media Effect
  • Remember When Gray Was Everything?
  • Farmhouse Style: The Rise and Fall
  • White Kitchens: Out of Style or Still Going Strong
  • The Danger of Chasing Every Trend
  • What Actually Makes Something Timeless
  • Trends That Have Survived Decades
  • Trends That Aged Quickly
  • Why Personal Style Matters More Than Trends
  • How Designers Balance Trends and Timelessness
  • Lessons Homeowners Can Learn

Design trends come and go. Good design stays. Build your home around quality, comfort, functionality, and personal style, and you'll never have to worry about whether you're in or out of fashion.

Remember that the best-designed home isn't the trendiest home—it's the home that works beautifully for the people who live there.

Why Aging Parents are Choosing Family Over Care Centers20 mai 202600:25:12

Welcome back to Home Design chat with Nancy where we tell you the truth about what happening in the design world.

If you have been enjoying my podcasts please subscribe on the platform you use to listen to my podcasts.

Today is May 20th.  For years I have been publishing this podcast on Mondays but I have been having  Technical problems.  No fun especially since I’m a designer not a computer techy.  I’m crossing my fingers . I hope the problem is solved.

This podcast is about something more families are facing than ever before — aging in place and how homeowners are adapting their homes for elderly parents, relatives, and even planning ahead for themselves. Time moves fast and we will all be in situations that we don’t really think about until we’re there. We are seeing people aging and we can remember just yesterday how we were all younger.

Families are turning spare bedrooms, first-floor guest suites, converted garages, and mother-in-law suites into comfortable living spaces for aging loved ones. The goal is simple: keep family close while allowing older adults to maintain as much independence, dignity, and safety as possible.

  75% to 90% of older adults want to stay in their current homes as they age. They actively want to avoid assisted living.

But  90% of U.S. homes are not physically ready to accommodate independent aging.

Listen to this podcast to get ideas and suggestions about making your loved ones feel independent and part of the family.

KBIS 2026 Kitchen Trends: What’s Worth It, What’s Overhyped & What to Skip28 avr. 202600:26:19

Welcome to Home Design Chat with Nancy, where we tell you the truth about what’s happening in the design world—what’s worth your money… and what’s just taking up space.

Today, I’m going talk about some of the biggest product trends from the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show 2026—in Orlando, Florida.

This kitchen show is not open to the public but there are several ways to actually see the products without going. Or you could just listen to me. I am going to give you my honest opinion of some items.

Let’s get into it.

  • Workstation Sinks
  • Rev-a-shelf cabinet accessories
  • Open Shelving in kitchens
  • Charging Countertops
  • Kohler Dekoda monitoring device
  • Free standing tubs

While innovation is exciting…The smartest designs are still the simplest ones.

So before you jump on any of these trends, ask yourself:

  • Will I use this every day?   Workstation sinks, large cooktops and ranges
  • Does it simplify my life—or complicate it? Are you confused with technology
  • And most importantly… is it worth the cost?  We have talked about the ROI before.  Do your homework

Because good design isn’t about having more. It’s about having what actually works.

If you’re planning on a renovation, I would definitely be happy to work with you. You can email me anytime at Nancy@NancyHugo.com—I’d love to hear from you.

We also talked about:

  • What problems the original had
  • What was on her wish list
  • How the new kitchen design fits her lifestyle
  • What features are her favorite
  • The total remodel experience

Kitchen Upgrades wit the Worst ROI (Don't't Waste Your Money)14 avr. 202600:22:39

Hi everyone, and welcome back to Home Design Chat with Nancy, where we talk about what’s really happening in today’s homes—and more importantly, how to make smart decisions before you spend a dollar.

Today’s episode is one that every homeowner needs to hear before starting a kitchen remodel…

kitchen upgrades with the WORST return on investment.  Those things that look amazing, cost a fortune… and don’t give you your money back.

Too many times homeowners spend thousands, sometimes tens of thousands, on features that either:

  • don’t add value to your home
  • don’t function well
  • or worse… actually hurt resale

Some of the topics I will cover:

  • The over the top luxury appliances
  • Fully custom cabinet
  • Too much open shelving
  • Backsplashes that take over
  • ...and much more

The best kitchens balance:

  • function
  • longevity
  • and thoughtful design

Before you spend money… ask yourself: “Is this going to improve how I live in my kitchen… or just how it looks?”

Because the kitchens that truly hold their value…Are the ones that work beautifully.

If you’re planning on a renovation, I would definitely be happy to work with you. You can email me anytime at Nancy@NancyHugo.com—I’d love to hear from you.

Today we are diving into a trend that is absolutely everywhere right now—and that is Zellige-style tile.

You’ve probably seen it all over Instagram, in kitchens, bathrooms, even entire shower walls… that glossy, slightly uneven tile that just glows.

But here’s the question— Is it really as great as it looks?

And more importantly… is it right for your home?

So today, Gil Olachea, owner of Ceramica in Scottsdale, Arizona, is back with me to help break it all down—because this is one of those products that looks simple… but is definitely not simple when it comes to installation.

Our topics today are:

  • What is Zellige Tile?
  • Why everyone loves it
  • The Reality check
  • Cost & expectations
  • Maintenance & function
  • Where to use it & where not to use it

Aging in Place Kitchen Design: Smart Renovation Ideas to Stay in Your Home Longer23 mars 202600:24:29

Hi everyone, and welcome back to Home Design Chat with Nancy, where we talk about what’s trending, what’s timeless, and what actually works in your home.

If you are new to this podcast, I am Nancy Hugo, a certified kitchen designer, with a passion for design. Hence the podcast which I have been doing for 12 yrs.

My subject today is kitchen renovations for aging in place.

Whether you’re in your 40s, 50s, 60s, or beyond, designing a kitchen that works for you long-term is one of the smartest things you can do. And the worse thing is to not have a kitchen that is hard to work around because you didn’t make these easy alterations.  Have you noticed that no one is getting younger.

Aging in place isn’t about getting older… it’s about getting smarter with your design.

Here are my talking points:

  • What does Aging in Place really mean?
  • Why are homeowners prioritizing renovations for aging in place now?
  • Floor Plan
  • Work Zones
  • Cabinetry that works for you
  • Appliances that make life easier
  • Safety features
  • Small Changes making a big impact

Design your kitchen for the life you want to live—not just the one you’re living today. When you plan ahead, you’re not limiting your future

Paint Like a Pro - Color Trends & Expert Painting Tips16 mars 202600:31:55

Hi everyone and welcome to Home Design Chat with Nancy, where we talk about everything that makes your home more beautiful, functional, and fun.

Today we’re diving into one of the most talked-about topics in home design right now — paint.

If you’ve spent even five minutes scrolling online lately, you’ve probably seen conversations about color trends, color drenching, color capping, and bold new ways to use paint in your home. Paint may be one of the least expensive design changes you can make, but when it’s done right, it can completely transform a space.

And when it’s done wrong… well… let’s just say we’ve all seen those DIY disasters.

That’s why today I invited an expert. My guest is Jaron Cook, owner of Painting Butler, and if that name sounds familiar, it should. In February, his partner Nick Elg owner of the Flooring Butler joined me to talk about flooring trends.

Here are the topics we cover in this podcast:

Why Paint is Trending Right Now
Painting Mistakes Homeowners Make
Paint Finishes Explained
Should You Paint Cabinets
How to Pick the Right Color
How Long Should a Paint Job Last?
Professional vs DIY
Quick Painting Tips

Independent Living with Style, Safety & Dignity: Smart Home Design That Works26 janv. 202600:33:11

Welcome back to Home Design Chat with Nancy. Today we’re talking about something that affects every homeowner—whether they realize it or not—and that’s accessible home design.

This isn’t about creating a home that looks clinical or institutional. It’s about designing spaces that are safer, smarter, and honestly… just better designed.

I’m so excited to have Erica Sell, owner of Harmony Home Medical Supply in San Diego,  with me today.

Accessibility is one of the most misunderstood areas of home design—and one of the most important.

It's about preparing for the worst. It’s about creating a home that supports you—beautifully—through every stage of life.

When it’s done right, you don’t notice it. You just feel how well the space works.

Smart design, timeless design, accessible design—they’re all the same thing.

These are our topics in this podcast:

  •  What accessibility really means today.
  • The European wet room influence.
  • Off-the-shelf products that work.
  • Specialized tubs vs roll-in showers.
  • Cost, funding & realistic planning.

If you’re planning on a renovation, I would definitely be happy to work with you.

Are You Still Using the Kitchen Work Triangle—and Should You Be?13 janv. 202600:24:06

Welcome back to Home Design Chat with Nancy—the podcast where we talk about smart, functional, and beautiful design for your home.

Today is January 12th. Last week, my guest was Kirk Bianchi, a landscape design expert. He’ll be joining me again in a few weeks to answer your backyard design questions, so feel free to send those in.

Today’s topic is one that continues to spark debate in the design world: the kitchen work triangle. Some designers are quick to say that the work triangle is outdated and no longer relevant for 2026 and beyond. This conversation has been ongoing for years, and it’s one I’ve been part of for a long time as kitchens—and the way we use them—have evolved.

Before talking about what may replace the work triangle, I want to step back and talk about where it came from. Most people I speak with have heard of the kitchen work triangle, but few know when, why, and how it originated. That curiosity sent me down a bit of a research rabbit hole.

In this episode, you’ll learn when and where the kitchen work triangle began, whose idea it was, and why it became such a foundational concept in kitchen design—as well as how it’s being reinterpreted today.

During the podcast, I mentioned that I would share a link about Lillian Gilbreth, whose work had a profound influence on modern kitchen design.   I was truly impressed by her accomplishments and her life, which is why I spent some time discussing her contributions.

I also revisit zone-based kitchen layouts. I’ve talked about kitchen zones in previous episodes, but these concepts are worth repeating, especially as they continue to shape how we design kitchens today.

I hope you enjoyed today’s podcast. If you did, please subscribe on your preferred listening platform so you never miss an episode.

Outdoor Living Design Trends Every Homeowner Should Know05 janv. 202600:28:06

Today is Jan 5th, my first podcast for 2026.  We are enjoying the winter weather of Phoenix.. Don’t laugh we do get some cold weather but if we want to see snow we would go to Flagstaff.  We have that option, but no thank you. That’s the reason I live in Phoenix.

If you have snow on the ground, and in checking the weather, I know many places are being hit with cold, snowy weather, you are probably not thinking of landscaping.

But just think when the warm weather hits,  you will have great ideas about what to do from my next guest.

Kirk Bianchi, owner of BianchiDesign.com, a custom luxury watershape and landscape design firm based in Scottsdale, Arizona,  has been an outdoor living designer since 1991 after attending Az State University for architectural design.

Rather than becoming a contractor, he started his own design consulting business in 2000 where he has been sought out to create extraordinarily beautiful outdoor living spaces for both his discerning clients as well as architects to shape their work at the highest level.

Kirk received Master of the Southwest honorary in 2005 as his early debut in Phoenix home and garden magazine. Since 2021, Kirk has been sought out for being a design instructor and faculty advisor through Genesis, founded in '98 as an industry education platform that sets the bar in exterior design, from construction methods to design principles.

In this podcast Kirk will talk about the take-a-ways from the classes he teaches and what his goals are for the industry.

Also Kirk will explain the subjects of the outdoor design process and how he goes about to achieve them.

Listen for more incites Kirk talks about in this podcast.

Season’s Greetings from Nancy: A Holiday Hello & Thank You15 déc. 202500:05:56

Hi everyone, and welcome to Home Design Chat with Nancy.  As we get close to Christmas and the end of the year, I wanted to take a moment to thank you all for listening to my podcasts.

This year marks the end of 10 years of Home Design Chat with Nancy,

When I started this podcast, I was worried about having enough information to share with you but It seems that I never run out of topics to talk about with you.

Over the past decade, we’ve talked about everything from kitchen and bath design to tile trends, safety, wellness, and how homes really function in everyday life.

These  podcasts have always been about education — helping you make informed decisions, not just follow trends.

Last January I started to focus more on homeowners and do -it -yourselfers, educating on every aspect of design and how-to’s. We did a series on installing tile yourself.  That was interesting.  I learned alot although I would not install myself.

Gil Olachea became my co-host squeezing in time to podcast once or twice a month.

I’m really excited about what’s coming up in 2026.

  • Gil and I will have more honest conversations about products
  • The  pros and cons — or as I call the good, the bad and the ugly.
  • Biophilic designs, wellness and technology are definitely on everyone’s radar

My goal in 2026 is to keep this podcast useful, practical, and grounded in how people actually live.”

I’ll be sharing a few ‘Best of Home Design Chat with Nancy’ episodes over the next few weeks — some of the conversations you’ve loved most and that are still incredibly relevant today.

I’ll be taking a short holiday break, and I’ll be back with great new guests starting January 5th, 2026. I already have some interesting guests lined up, and I can’t wait to share them with you.

Happy Holiday

Is the New Cooktop Concept Worth It? My Honest Opinion08 déc. 202500:17:47

Hi everyone, and welcome back to Home Design Chat with Nancy!

Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa are going to be here before you know it.  Whatever you celebrate, I am sure you have a lot to do before the big day or big week.. Decorating, gift shopping, planning the menu for family holiday dinners, and added to this, enough stress for 10 people.  I think stress naturally goes with holidays.

I was actually thinking of sharing some of my traditional Italian cookies and pastry recipes but…this is not a cooking show, so I will stick with my subjects for your home.

If you are remodeling any part of your home, or building a new home, or are in the middle of planning a remodel project, now is not the time to think about this.  Just relax. Watch Christmas movies, make ornaments & cookies with your kids and have fun.

Several weeks ago I reviewed the walk in tub.  I shared my honest opinion on the pros and cons.

Today I am reviewing  an interesting product for the kitchen.  I really like induction cooktops but this one by Invisacook goes a step further.

  • How does it work
  • Pros & Cons
  • Ventilation
  • Cost

I hope today’s episode on the pros and cons of a new product.

Free-standing Tubs vs Showers: Pros, Cons & Safety Tips Every Homeowner Should Know17 nov. 202500:26:24

Hi everyone, welcome to Home Design Chat with Nancy. My podcasts are  all about your home…how to plan, design and execute your remodel and much more.

When we talk about bathroom design, two themes always seem to show up: safety and luxury.

Homeowners want a space that feels spa-worthy, but they also want it to function comfortably and safely for everyday life.

And right in the middle of that conversation sits the ever-popular freestanding tub. People love it—but is the appeal really about luxury, or is there something deeper going on?

In today’s episode, we’re looking at how they fit into a safe and well-planned layout, and whether they’re the right choice for your next remodel.

Topics of discussion:

  • The risks of free-standing tubs
  • How risks can be mitigated
  • Free-standing tubs might work with design adjustments
  • More design ideas for a safe bathroom

The Colors of 2026: Sherwin-Williams’ Top Palettes and How to Use Them10 nov. 202500:31:36

Hi everyone, I’m Nancy Hugo, and you’re listening to Home Design Chat with Nancy., I am a certified kitchen designer and love remodeling kitchens and bathrooms.

Home Design Chat with Nancy is all about your home…how to plan, design and execute your remodel and much more.

The most common question everyone has when they are planning a remodel is "what is the color of the year?"

We know every year there are new colors introduced for fashion, cars and home design, and of course, you don't have to follow that, but it is fun to know what the new colors are.

Laurie Clark with Sherwin-Williams is back with me, as she is every year, to explain the Anthology of color and how it relates the the color forecast for 2026.

2026 Anthology Volume 2” is comprised of  48 hand-selected hues grouped into four palettes.

  • The four palettes are:

    1. Frosted Tints — airy pastels, milky lavenders, soft greens/blues.

    2. Sunbaked Hues — warm, sun-drenched earthy tones: terracotta, saffron yellow, clay-inspired reds.

    3. Restorative Darks — deep, enveloping tones (plum, burgundy, inky blues) designed for comfort and cocooning.

    4. Foundational Neutrals — modern neutrals with subtle undertones, warm and layered instead of flat.

  • The 2026 Color of the Year is Universal Khaki SW 6150 — a mid-tone neutral with slight yellow/khaki undertone, described as “warm, grounded, versatile

Home Design Chat with Nancy is all about your home…how to plan, design and execute your remodel and much more.

You use the bathroom several times a day and don’t really look at it with a critical eye, but then you look at magazines and realize your bathroom could use an update.  That’s our subject for today.

Main reasons why your bathroom looks outdated:

  • Color schemes
  • Builder grade tiles
  • Lighting
  • Plumbing fixtures/finishes
  • Countertops
  • Vanity cabinet height
  • Over accessorizing
  • Glass block
  • Tubs set in decks

How to Realize you Hired the Wrong Designer20 oct. 202500:33:23

Welcome back to Home Design Chat with Nancy. If you are new to my show, I am Nancy Hugo, a certified kitchen designer.

My podcasts are all about your home…how to plan, design and execute your remodel and much more.

Over the 16 years that I have done podcasting I have had many guests and have covered many subjects. Most of them are educational...actually all of them have been interesting and educational.

Gil Olachea, owner of Ceramica, a wholesale tile showroom in Scottsdale is my monthly guest co-host and back today to talk about a very interesting subject.

Gil and I have talked many times about how the design process is changing.  So that's our subject for today!

Remodeling your home should be exciting but if you hire the wrong designer, that dream project can quickly turn into a stressful, expensive, and disappointing experience. The relationship between homeowner and designer is like a partnership — built on trust, communication, and shared vision.

Here’s how to spot the red flags, avoid costly mistakes, and make sure your next project runs smoothly from start to finish.

  • Communication is a struggle
  • Designer is not accompanying client to showrooms
  • The chemistry just isn't there
  • The budget keeps shifting
  • Project management falls apart
  • The design doesn't reflect the client (homeowner)
  • The cost of the wrong designer

How 2026 Is Redefining Kitchen Style and Function06 oct. 202500:21:47

Welcome back to Home Design Chat with Nancy I am your host Nancy Hugo.

One of the most popular questions I hear as a kitchen designer is “What are the trends for the new year?”

Kitchens are especially prone to new trends and homeowners typically want the latest and greatest gadgets and to increase their resale value.

We know that generally speaking the kitchen sells the home. I do want to point out that not only are homeowners interested in the resale factor but also they are interested in designing for their forever home.  They want to stay in their home longer and feel safe and secure and happy.

The National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) and Kitchen & Bath Industry Show just released the 2026 Kitchen Trends Report based on a survey conducted among the NKBA community including the US and Canada. Did this survey agree with independent designers?

The topics I covered

  • Style
  • Cabinet Colors
  • Kitchen layouts
  • Induction Cooking
  • Task zones
  • Decorative Lighting
  • Kitchen islands

Did you agree with the surveys?  What is your opinion on these topics?
