We couldn't picture watching all 3 of these bad Home Alone sequels, and we couldn't imagine making you listen to 3 episodes worth of that. So we each watched one of them, and sum them up for you in our own way in this one compact ep. You don't have to watch these movies, unless you're some sort of masochist who hates spoilers for irrelevant movies.

 

Mike watched 2012's Home Alone: The Holiday Heist. It has a haunted house/mobster subplot, a hidden speakeasy, and made Mike wanna drink.

  

Jake watched what legitimately sounds like the worst idea for a Home Alone movie ever, with 2002's Home Alone 4. 

 

Adam watched 1997's Home Alone 3, and, though I forgot to mention it in the episode, one of the biggest letdowns was that the kid never used the yellow Sega Game Gear he had hanging from his utility belt on the movie poster. False advertising. Deal Breaker. Game over.

Welcome to December, welcome to our new Rewind miniseries! We are covering the Home Alone franchise of Christmas movies, as only we do: in reverse! This is 199? Presents Home Alone Rewind.

 

In this, the first ep of the series, we are discussing 2021's direct-to-streaming-on-Disney-Plus "legacy sequel," Home Sweet Home Alone. 

 

Ellie Kemper and Rob DeLaney are trying to get their hands on a $200,000 ugly little boy to sell to an old lady to save their house. Of course, they know they're talking about a porcelain doll, but the kid, Max, thinks they want to kidnap him. So he creates a plan to defend himself and his McMansion.

This week, we leave Michael Myers behind to discuss Halloween III. Audiences at the time weren't properly prepared for a "Halloween" movie without Michael Myers, and it got a terrible reputation. Time has been kind to it though, and taken for what it is, it is finding its audience. Its definitely a fun one to watch with friends at a Halloween party!

The original idea for an anthology series of unrelated Halloween films is a free idea that’s just sitting out there. We still think this needs to happen!

Sure Michael is back, but there’s no Laurie. There’s no involvement from John Carpenter. No JLC. But set your worries aside! This is still a pretty great Halloween movie! Michael is revealed to have survived the events of Halloween 1 & 2, and has been catatonic in a mental hospital for the intervening 10 years. And, fools that they are, they are transferring him somewhere else on the day before Halloween. Donald Pleasance is back as Loomis and he is trying to protect Laurie’s recently orphaned daughter, Jamie, from her maniacal murder Uncle Michael.

Jamie Lloyd is back, and this time she’s played by Danielle Harris, a great actress. But she’s a mute for the first half of the movie. And they do nothing with and then kill off her “sister,” Rachel, who we will get to know better next week in Halloween 4. Rachel’s friend Tina leads a group of crazy Haddonfield teens looking to get their Hallofreek on. Loomis rages around town scaring more people than The Shape himself. Production problems and a tight budget might just doom this one! Judge for yourself, but be reasonable!

Theatrical Cut, Producer's Cut, whatever. Halloween 6 has PROBLEMS. But at least the mask looks good in this one. And there are some great kills. However, you have to have some interest in the power of Runes to influence evil to truly enjoy The Curse of Michael Myers. Paul Rudd stars in this one, though, and it was his first movie! 

 

So listen as we discuss the film that wraps up the Jamie Lloyd trilogy, despite recasting her with a complete zero, and totally ruining the character's life.

You may not know it from listening to our podcast, since she's appeared in every movie we've covered so far, but H20 was Jamie Lee Curtis' return to the franchise after 17 years. With the resurrection of Laurie Strode, H20 became the first—but not the last—soft reboot in the franchise, discarding Halloween 4-6. This movie has its issues (what is up with that MASK?!), but overall, it is a scary and fun slasher movie that doesn't go over-the-top. There are gratuitous jump scares along the way, but the final showdown between Laurie and Michael Myers is worth the watch!

Tonight Mike and Adam explore the second Smashing Pumpkins album, 1993’s Siamese Dream. We go track-by-track and talk about the creation of one of the greatest records of the 90s. How do Billy Corgan and Butch Vig achieve balance and harmony when this album is, at one moment, monstrous chaotic warfare, and, at the next, a warm evening at a luxurious spa? We attempt to answer that question as we hear Disarm, Cherub Rock, Today, Soma, Spaceboy, Geek USA, and all of the stellar tracks on this seminal sophomore release. Life’s a bummer when you’re a hummer.

On this episode of Nineteen Ninety What, we are back to basics! The year in question is 1998, and we are looking at the Alternative Songs Chart. And, yeah. There are a lot of forgotten one "hit" wonders tonight. But before we get to those, the sorting hat has it's way with us. 

We pull two movies and one video game from '98. Small Soldiers and Half Baked are 2 very different movies, and we talk about the things that made them great. Also, we vaguely remember Metal Gear Solid. They can't all be winners, and at least this proves that we don't pad the sorting hat, right? Right?!?

When we get to the chart, We do hear from some familiar voices, like Oasis, Pearl Jam and Bush, but there are also a ton of no-name artists that we've never heard from before and will probably never hear again: Big Wreck, Finley Quaye, Huffamoose, God Lives Underwater, and Cornershop. Plus we get to talk about the ska and swing revivals that brought horns to 1998 in a big way.

In October 1994, Dave Grohl was in need of a fresh start. He took a handful of songs he'd written into the studio. Alone. Solo. A one-man effort. He single-handedly turned these into the platinum-selling, self-titled debut album for today's preeminent rock band, Foo Fighters. Adam has a surprise for an unsuspecting Mike, who foolishly believes this will be a standard episode, where we discuss the Billboard charts for 1991. Instead, we are going to listen through Nirvana's landmark album from that year, Nevermind. With the Drumming Power of David Grohl, the growling bass of Krist Novoselic, and the genius of Kurt Cobain, Nevermind changed things in music and in culture, in new and unexpected ways. The record label was capping their expectations for its performance at Gold, but the thing eventually went Diamond. Mike and Adam overcame sickness, car troubles, missing equipment and technical issues to bring you the conclusion to the Mainstream Rock Chart from 19 years ago. And boy did they ever regret it. Come back to a time when Kid Rock and Limp Bizkit were battling it out on the airwaves. The infectiously Smooth sound of Santana--featuring Rob Thomas-- was quite literally everywhere. The Offspring, Tonic, Creed, Bush, LIVE, and Filter all make their return, and we hear from one of the best Red Hot Chili Peppers' albums. Also, almost inexplicably, Def Leppard, Great White and Lynyrd Skynyrd all show up on this chart. In 1999.

To honor one of the great American Songwriters, at this, the first anniversary of his passing, Adam takes Mike through one of Tom Petty's most significant decades. If you thought of Tom as a 70's classic rocker or as a splash from the 80's new wave, you may be surprised at the growth and transitions made before the end of the century. There are Heartbreakers albums, solo records, important guest spots, supergroups and side projects. As a 90's rock podcast, we could think of no better way to pay tribute and our respects to one of the most legit artists ever to rock a Rickenbacker. Rock in Peace, Thomas Earl Petty.

Many surprises lay in wait for you in this, the final year of the nineties—not the least of which is one of the most popular hair bands of the eighties breaking back onto the charts. The bearded bad boys of blues-rock, ZZ top, make an appearance. Foo Fighters, Lenny Kravitz, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, NIN and STP return. Mike and Adam return to the Alternative charts to show you just how weird the radio got in 1998. We have some major stylistic shifts from one song to the next in this episode, and there is more variety than you may be able to tolerate. You'll hear the the techno-tinged, dance sample master Fatboy Slim, the slick, commercial alt-rock of Lenny Kravitz, the emotive talk-singing of a Shawn Mullins ballad, and even the nü-metal freakout of Korn. After a stunning first half, with an explosion of great pop and great alternative, the Adult Top 40 chart from 21 years ago gets even better this week, if you can even believe that. Nearly every one of these songs were memorable, huge hits of 1997. There are some eternally fresh sounding pop-rock bands like the Wallflowers, Matchbox 20, Third Eye Blind, Sister Hazel, and Tonic. You'll also get your fix of great, female singer songwriters! Meredith Brooks, Paula Cole, Jewel, Sheryl Crow, Shawn Colvin, and Sarah McLachlan each make at least one appearance. Crack open a cold one (club soda, of course) and listen to some Adult Top 40 from September 6, 1997! It was a crazy-diverse week on this chart, and there's a lot to unpack, even though we're only going through the top half this week. From the record-setting longevity of LeAnn Rimes, to a pre-problematic R. Kelly slow jam for the ages, to the resurgence of major boy bands and girl bands, 1997 was a wild ride. We also have our fair share of rock and alternative groups, with further hits from Better Than Ezra and Live, and the ska punk of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Coincidentally, in this episode, Mike and Adam each hear what was their favorite song, back at the time that those songs were getting the airplay that landed them on this chart.
