Fr James Lawson - On Loving and Hating the World04 Apr 202300:51:30

Church of England priest Jamie Franklin and doctoral student of Divinity Clinton Collister sit down with author of Loving and Hating the World: Ambivalence and Discipleship James Lawson. Fr James' book makes the challenging claim that true Christian discipleship consists in neither wholly accepting nor in wholly rejecting the world but in maintaining a holy balance between those two extremes.
We examined this argument in the light of theological sensibilities such as the Radical Orthodoxy movement and that of Rowan Williams. We also explored the philosophy of Charles Taylor in the same light and considered the potential for a revived Christian Platonism that sees the material world not as a prison-house for the soul but as a conduit of transcendence. In the final section of the conversation, we spoke about Rod Dreher and The Benedict Option and ask why Dreher's thesis has been given short shrift in some Anglican circles.
This is a vital conversation for any Christian attempting to come to terms with our relationship to the prevailing culture and the call of God upon our lives as disciples.

Peter Webster on E.L. Mascall - Orthodoxy, Classical Theism and the Twentieth Century Challenge from Liberalism12 Aug 202200:48:58

For this special episode, regular host Clinton Collister was joined by independent researcher Dr. Peter Webster to talk about the legacy of Anglican systematic theologian E.L. Mascall. Peter Webster is a historian of contemporary British Christianity. Details of his work on Eric Mascall, including the article discussed in the podcast, may be found at:  https://peterwebster.me/mascall/
E.L.Mascall was a proponent of orthodox Anglican theology and classical theism in the middle of the twentieth century, a time during which orthodoxy increasingly came under pressure as liberal trends exerted an ever more powerful influence in the Church. Peter and Clinton help us to understand the significance of Mascall as a priestly theologian and why his work is so important to engage with today.

The Atonement Part 4: Theories of the Atonement - The Abelardian View and Penal Substitution23 Jul 202201:13:52

In this bumper episode, Jamie and Clinton round out this series with a thorough discussion of two significant theories of the atonement. The Abelardian view of the atonement sees the cross as an act of God's love which seeks to bring about shame for sin, repentance and reconciliation with God, whilst penal substitutionary atonement says that the death of Christ constitutes a propitiation of the wrath of God through the transference of our penalty on to Christ on the cross. We debate the merits and potential drawbacks of both of these positions.
We close with some final reflections on the way that we see the death of Christ by arguing that it must not be reduced to one specific theory but can be conceived of as a confluence of atonement for sin, exemplary obedience to God and victory over the cosmic powers of death and hell.

The Atonement Part 3: Theories of the Atonement - Christus Victor, The Ransom Theory and The Satisfaction Theory28 Jun 202201:00:55

In the third part of our series on the atonement, Clinton Collister and Jamie Franklin discuss three prominent theories concerning our understanding of this issue: Christ's death and resurrection as victory over the powers of sin and darkness, the theory that Christ's death was a ransom paid to Satan in order to free human beings from the penalty of sin and the theory that Christ's death was an offering made to God in order to liberate human beings from the price that they owed to God due to sin. We plan in our fourth episode in this series to discuss the Abelardian view of the atonement and the theory of penal substitutionary atonement.

The Atonement Part 2: The Incarnation and New Testament Witness12 May 202200:54:04

In the second part of our series on the atonement, we ask what Jesus said about his death and examine the theological witness of the New Testament, particularly the writing of Paul, looking specifically at Christ as the second Adam, the uniting of the believer with Christ in his death and the notion of Christ's righteousness imputed to us in exchange for sin.

The Atonement Part 1: Sin, Justice and The Old Testament05 Apr 202200:48:54

In this episode of Holy CofE, Jamie Franklin and Clinton Collister talk about the passion and death of Jesus Christ. We begin with a consider of the background presuppositions that underlie this conversation, namely, the problem of sin and the need for justice. Why could God not simply forgive us our sins out of love and mercy? Why does sin necessitate anything more, such as the death of Christ? What concepts of justice undergird our reactions against the notion of atonement?
We then move on to discuss the atonement in The Old Testament types, shadows and anticipations of a suffering Messiah.

In this week's special episode, Clinton and Jamie were joined by Bishop of Burnley Philip North who spoke to us about his vision for catholic evangelism in the Church of England. Bishop Philip also touched on the importance of personal discipleship and engaging preaching that seeks to affect not just the mind but also the heart. As always, he was also keen to stress the particular emphasis that the Anglo-Catholic movement has placed on ministry with and for deprived communities and the role of aesthetic beauty and liturgical worship in that context.

How does the contemporary practice differ from that of the ancient church? What is the difference between the effects of baptism and confirmation? Duns Scotus and Thomas Aquinas on the Relationship of the Fall to the Incarnation27 Aug 202100:43:13

In this week's episode, Clinton and Fr Jamie talk about Duns Scotus, his theological significance and legacy. Starting with a look at the metaphysical critique of Scotus inspired by the Radical Orthodoxy school, encompassing the topics of nominalism, voluntarism and the univocity of being (we will explain!), we move on to talk about the significant differences between a Thomistic view of the fall, sin and the Incarnation and that of Scotus. After all that we consider the different answers given by Thomas and Scotus to the question of whether or not the Incarnation would have happened had mankind not fallen in the beginning. Priesthood w/ Fr Robin Ward11 Aug 202100:57:09

In this special episode, Clinton and Fr Jamie sit down with principal of St Stephen's House Fr Robin Ward, talking on the nature of priesthood and the sacramental identity of the Church of England. Among other things, we discuss ideas arising from Fr Ward's book On Christian Priesthood, which seeks to recover the "cult" identity of the Church of England and of the priest as man of the Eucharist, intercessor, confessor and teacher. In it, Fr Ward "seeks to re-pristinate the doctrine of ministerial priesthood by setting it within the context of fundamental moral theology - to recall readers from all Christian traditions to the fundamental soundness of the concept of ministerial priesthood and its importance in contemporary ecumenical duologue, liturgical reform and pastoral planning."
