Visiting Switzerland? Discover 3 Off-The-Beaten Path Swiss Towns That Only The Locals Know About05 Nov 202500:27:16

If you're working on your Switzerland itinerary and want to go beyond the usual tourist stops, this episode is for you! I’m sharing three destinations I recently visited that completely charmed me, each one offering something a little different, a little quieter, and a lot more local.

First up is Savognin, a peaceful alpine village in Parc Ela that’s close to the Landwasser Viaduct, a must-see if you love scenic train views or hiking. It’s a great place to slow down and enjoy nature.

Next, I take you to Lenk Switzerland in the Bernese Oberland. It’s one of those Swiss ski towns that’s perfect for families, with wide open spaces and a relaxed vibe. I stayed at the beautiful Lenkerhof Gourmet Spa Resort and can’t wait to tell you all about it.

And finally, we head to Winterthur, just a short train ride from Zürich. It’s full of culture, cozy cafes, and some amazing Switzerland museums. I stayed at the lovely Park Hotel Winterthur, which I highly recommend.

If you're dreaming of authentic Swiss towns and villages, beautiful landscapes, or relaxing family ski resorts, these spots deserve a place in your Switzerland vacation.

Safe travels,

Carolyn

Berner Oberland Pass - the Swiss rail pass for the Bernese Oberland17 May 202200:35:27

One of the many wonderful things to do in Switzerland is to ride a cable car, funicular or mountain railway to the top of a mountain peak.  There are tons and tons of choices for mountain excursions right across the country, and nowhere more so than in the Jungfrau Region.

But having such a huge choice of excursions can also cause a bit of a dilemma.  Which ones do you choose and how will you afford them?

That’s where transport – or rail – passes come in.  With just one ticket, you can ride on mountain railways, cable cars and funiculars as well as the regular public transport system within a certain area.

On previous episodes of the podcast we’ve chatted about the Swiss Travel Pass and the Jungfrau Travel Pass and today it’s time to discover all the benefits of the Berner Oberland Pass with my special guest, Jana Amacher.

Discover all the benefits of the Berner Oberland Pass (previously called the Regional-Pass Berner Oberland) in this episode.

Decadent must-have Swiss chocolate experiences05 Apr 202200:39:47

Switzerland has a long chocolate-making history and is renowned for producing some of the best - if not THE best - chocolate in the world.

So it’s not surprising then, that eating Swiss chocolate is right up there at the top of most people’s must-do lists when they visit Switzerland.

Of course you can buy Swiss chocolate at the supermarket and at souvenir stores when you’re in Switzerland but for a really immersive experience and to learn more about Swiss chocolate, visiting a factory or taking part in a chocolate making workshop is a fun thing to do.

In today’s episode, we’re going on a virtual chocolate-tasting tour to three different places where you can learn more about the history of Swiss chocolate, watch it being made, make your own chocolate in a workshop, and eat chocolate to your heart’s content.

My guests today are Sandy Bolland from Funky Chocolate Club in Interlaken, Caroline Derungs from Chocolarium in Flawil and Kai Spehr from Lindt Home of Chocolate near Zurich.

After hearing about the fun chocolate experiences that are on offer at each of these establishments, you'll be planning your Swiss itinerary around a visit to one - if not all three - of these delicious destinations!

Swiss traditions and world class sites22 Mar 202200:27:36

Is it photos of the incredible scenic beauty that have enticed you to visit Switzerland? I’m not surprised.  Everywhere you turn in Switzerland you are rewarded with breathtaking views of mountains, lakes, rivers, glaciers, gorges and lush fields - it really is the most beautiful place on Earth.

But the magnificent scenery certainly isn’t the only thing that Switzerland has going for it.  The country is home to 13 UNESCO World Heritage Sites and some rather unique traditions and customs, both of which we are going to hear about today.

My guest today is Livio Goetz, Director of Switzerland Tourism Australia and New Zealand and Livio has some fascinating facts to share with us today.

In this episode, Livio talks about:

  • His background and his career in the travel industry
  • Swiss customs and traditions including unique events and sports
  • Switzerland's UNESCO World Heritage-listed sites
  • His top 3 'must do' experiences for first time visitors to Switzerland

Visiting Mt Rigi - The Queen of the Mountains05 Oct 202100:29:20

Switzerland is known for its snow capped mountain peaks and for every mountain - regardless of how high it is - there’s usually a mountain railway or a cable car to take you to the top.

In fact, Switzerland is home to Europe’s oldest mountain railway, the Rigibahn, and in 2021 the railway is celebrating its 150th anniversary.  It’s incredible to think how many tourists must have taken the journey to the top of Mt. Rigi in a century and a half.

A lot has changed in 150 years but one thing has remained the same - the breathtaking 360 degree views from the top of Mt. Rigi.

In today’s episode I’m joined by Frederich Fussenich, the CEO of Rigi Railways, who tells us about the history of the railway and shares all the reasons a visit to Mt. Rigi should be top of your list when you are in Central Switzerland.

Discovering the delights of Schaffhausen, Rhine Falls and Stein am Rhein24 Aug 202100:28:33

Although it is one of the smaller cantons of Switzerland, the canton of Schaffhausen is quite well known thanks to the Rhine Falls. Many visitors come to the area on a day trip from Zurich and I too am guilty of doing just that.

With so much more to see and do in the canton than just the Rhine Falls, I invited Patricia Seif from Schaffhauserland Tourism to tell me more about this northern part of Switzerland.

Patricia not only works at the Tourist Office, she also takes guided tours of Schaffhausen, so she knows the whole area intimately and her passion for her home town is evident.

As well as discovering all the highlights of the canton, there are lots of interesting and fun facts that you'll learn in this episode, too.

Did you know, for instance, that the canton of Schaffhausen shares 80% of its borders with Germany and only 20% with other Swiss cantons? Or that the city of Schaffhausen is home to 171 oriel windows - the most in any town in Switzerland?

These are just some of the interesting facts and tips you'll learn in this episode that will have you adding Schaffhausen to your Swiss itinerary.

Hotel Gloria, the Beatenberg hotel with fabulous views, friendly hosts and the finest food.10 Aug 202100:44:12

When Australian Jacky and Swiss Bernhard first met in Australia many years ago, they had no idea that they would eventually marry and move to Switzerland to operate a hotel and restaurant. But fate stepped in and they find themselves owning and operating Hotel Gloria in Beatenberg, a small village just 10 kilometres from Interlaken.

With the hotel perched on a sunny terrace overlooking Lake Thun and with panoramic views of the Bernese Alps, it's no wonder the couple love welcoming guests to their hotel and restaurant.

Bernhard is a chef who has worked in 5 star establishments around the world, and together with Jacky, who has a real passion for making her guests feel like family, they have created a hotel that guests return to again and again.  "Our guests are never just a name and room number," is their mantra.

After listening to Jacky and Bernhard's story in this episode, you'll get a real sense of their commitment to offering their guests a homely, welcoming base in the gorgeous village of Beatenberg.

And you'll be booking your stay at Hotel Gloria!
