Olga was the wive of Igor, the Grand Prince of the Kievan Rus’, a federation of people whose capital was the city of Kyiv, now the capital of modern day Ukraine. When her husband was brutally murdered by a subsidiary tribe, Olga went on a legendary campaign of cunning and ruthless revenge. Once in control of her husband’s kingdom, she was an efficient and effective leader. She converted to Christianity in order to get out of an unwanted marriage proposal. She is credited with introducing Christianity to the Rus people. After her death, Olga was canonized as a saint and is regarded as “Equal to the Apostles” within the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. Jadwiga, Female King of Poland was crowned at the age of 10. She grew wise beyond her years and was forced to make a difficult decision about who to marry – a young man she liked or an old man who would Christianize his country for her. The royal and imperial courts of Asia had complex systems of female hierarchy. The ruler’s wives and female relatives were at the top, and a great many other ladies were there to serve them. Similar to the ladies in waiting of European royal courts, these women cared for the rooms and wardrobes of higher ranking women, assist them in hygiene and grooming; and entertain them, keep them company, act as their secretaries and pass on all the latest gossip, crucial to palace intrigue. In Islamic empires, these women were collectively known as the harem. Anglo-phonic historians also use the term Harem or Palace Women to refer to the ladies of the Imperial courts of East Asia. In Christian Europe, Kings were supposed to be faithful to their Queens, but they still got up to plenty of hanky-panky with the court ladies. But in Asia, where polygamy was common practice, all court ladies were available to the monarch for sexual services, and if they took the Emperor’s fancy, even the lowest born woman could be promoted to concubine, consort or even Empress. King George III of Great Britain and of Ireland and his German wife, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz had a close and loving relationship which resulted in an astonishing 15 Children! The couple preferred a quiet life at home to court social life. George was relatively down to earth and far more involved with his children than previous generations of royals. He enjoyed tumbling around on the floor with his brood and playing games with them in the garden. Charlotte loved her children dearly but was more strict and formal than her husband. Having so many royal children was at once a blessing and a curse. If you think Queen Elizabeth’s 4 children cause a lot of scandal and cost tax payers too much money, multiply that by 3.75! And while having an heir and so many spares should have secured the line of succession. But the King and Queen were over-protective of their daughters and resisted allowing them to marry. The called Kew palace the nunnery and had romances with palace staff. The sons were far to interested in their mistresses to contract legal royal marriages and produce legitimate children. Towards the end of King George’s life he didn’t have a single legitimate grandchild, and parliament had to bribe the middle aged princes to finally walk down the aisle. The result was Queen Victoria who had to deal with the bad reputations her many wicked aunts and uncles and some serious family drama. She and George III had a happy marriage and an astonishing 15 children. On the night of April 14, 1912, 2,224 people faced doom in the middle of the fridge north Atlantic. The luxury liner hailed as unsinkable was about to do just that and disappear beneath the waves. The tragedy has long captured the public imagination with heroic tales of millionaire John Jacob Astor going down with the ship like a gentleman and fictionalized romances about people who weren’t really on board. Today lets met a handful of the real women who were on board that terrible night. The coronation of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla is a once in a generation event which will go down in history. But will it go down for all the wrong reasons? The Palace has announced that it will “reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry”. The components of the ceremony, taking an oath, anointing, investing of regalia, crowning, enthronement and homage have not altered since King Edgar was crowned in 973. And since 1066 nearly every coronation has taken place in Westminster Abbey and been performed by the Archbishop of Canterbury. But over the 1000 years since, everything from the wording and prayers to the guest list and what they wore has been altered with each new monarch. I’ll use the last two coronations of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1937 as a guide. The United Kingdom is the only monarchy in Europe which still holds coronations. Secularism and revolutions from the enlightenment through the 20th century did away with Europe’s other crowning traditions. No one wanted a coronation when crowned head where getting chopped off. Charles II, King of England, Scotland & Ireland from 1660 to 1685 is one of the most notorious lotharios in history. He loved the ladies and took both noble women and commoner actresses to bed, sometimes multiple times a day. And the ladies were certainly up for it. In addition to enjoying the charming sovereign’s company, they also enjoyed the gifts, estates, and noble titles he lavished upon them and their children. Last week we met Charles’s 14 known mistresses. Today we’ll meet the results of all that sensual behavior, the King’s 13 recognized illegitimate children. Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom was known as the grandmother of Europe. She and her husband Prince Albert had 9 children, 42 grandchildren, 85 great-grandchildren and 142 great-great-grandchildren. Many of her majesty’s estimated 1,239 total descendants married into royal families across Europe, from Russia to Spain, Norway to Romania and all over Germany. In addition to their royal mama’s short stature, beady eyes and haughty temperament, many of them carried another, more dangerous genetic legacy, hemophilia. We’re familiar with the Christmas carol “The 12 days of Christmas” but in the middle ages, this extended holiday Christmas looked a bit different. There were plenty of lords-a-leaping and ladies dancing but the only partridge was trussed up on the King’s table next to the swans-a-swimming in gravy. And the gold rings were baked in the Christmas pudding! Medieval people dropped their plows, wrapped their spinning wheels in holly and ivy and took 12 days off, from Christmas day to Epiphany on January 6th. As the yule log crackled in the fire they feasted, played games and sports, attended mass, enjoyed subversive revelry and imbibed gallons of wassail. It all culminated into the most raucous party of the year on twelfth night!
