This week's episode, we're taking a bit of a left turn from our usual topics to take a close look at the history of the art critic. Art critics have been highly influential on how societies think about art since the Renaissance, and they still matter today! The critics of the 19th century, however, were much different from those who came after them in terms of their own social power, as well as their emphasis on social moralizing through art criticism. Such critics also arguably had more intense relationships (good or bad) with their contemporary artists. In "Battle Royale...", we'll be diving into what their impacts and relationships looked like then, and how they shaped the art of that century.

Once highly scandalous and widely considered ugly, she stands today as an emblem of fashion and of women's self-possession: the one and only Madame X. Her partnership with #johnsingersargent to create the work was full of contention, but the two were proud the results of her portrait... until the Paris Salon of 1884. On this one-painting spotlight episode, we will be discussing women's self-presentation then and now, and what hasn't changed: how much reception of one's "look" matters.

To finish out our series with the diciest and darkest of all art history myths, we'll be covering the myth of the tortured/suffering artist this week. Pop culture and art history alike are full of examples of artists who suffer from mental illness; the conflation of the two is so common that it almost seems that one must be tortured in some way in order to make significant art. "The Myths of Art History Part 3: Dark & Depressed" will cover the origins and most famous examples, as well as some perpetuators, of this myth, and hopefully inspire you to look a little more critically at popular associations between creativity and mental health.

Coming to you from your host doing the most this holiday, "The Myths of Art History Part 2: The Starving Artist"! Originating with the Romantics and their bohemian lifestyles in the late 18th century and carrying on as an iconic pop culture figure through today, this stereotype is seen, at times, as a standard for perceived dedication to one’s craft. But it is also perceived as a romantic pursuit of art for art's sake, and a guaranteed result of the financial instability of arts careers. Of course, we would have nothing to debunk if these beliefs weren't so persistent. So tune in to hear all about some famous, and some surprising, true examples of starving artists, how this myth started, and how we can stop perpetuating it in the present.

We’re finally dropping our long-awaited episode on Edward Curtis’ photography and issues of “authenticity” in art and art history! Though Curtis’ own life story—and that very loaded term—are tales worthy of their own episodes, we’re going to be talking about them together in order to highlight how things are not always as they seem in some of the most iconic images of Native Americans, their lives, and their cultures. Tune in to learn about the struggle between truth and accuracy at the heart of Curtis’ photographic legacy, and how to rethink “authenticity” to be a more conscientious art consumer.

Call it an accidental theme, since November typically is election month, but we're diving into another well-known clash between politics and art: the destruction of Diego Rivera's mural for the Rockefeller Center in NYC the year after it was finished, in 1934. The destruction centered on the sharp divide between each side's econo=political stances; Rivera was a strong socialist and Marxism advocate, whereas Rockefeller was very happy with the American capitalism that had served his family well. But there's more than meets the eye to this story, so be sure to tune in to our sixth episode!

New episode alert! Today's story is taking us back to the 19th century, but this time we're getting inside the institutions rather than critiquing from the outside. We will be talking about the history of "Charges" or forms of hazing, in the acadamies and ateliers, and how in many ways, these artists were the OGs of the frat-boy stereotype.
