179 | Stay Weird: Why Distinctive Brands Win Premium Clients24 Sep 202600:14:01

Being polished, professional, and perfectly buttoned-up might actually be making your brand easier to ignore.

In this episode, I’m talking about why weirdness, distinctiveness, and being unmistakably YOU can be a powerful business advantage, especially when you’re selling premium offers.

I share what an unforgettable night at an Angine de Poitrine concert taught me about standing out, the research showing that distinctive brands are worth paying more for, and examples from Dolly Parton, Liquid Death, Duolingo, and a few of my own clients.

Because weird only works when there’s mastery underneath it.

If you’ve been toning down your personality, your point of view, your interests, or your unique way of doing things because you think you need to look more “professional,” this episode is your permission slip to stop blending in.

Let your freak flag fly, deliver exceptional work, and stay weird, my friend.

178 | The inner work needed to sell high-ticket offers, featuring business coach Becky Keen24 Sep 202600:40:31

If you've ever talked yourself out of raising your prices or let that little voice say "who do I think I am to charge that much", this episode is for you.

I'm sitting down with my longtime friend and business mentor Becky Keen, who built two successful companies before coming online, and she is dropping serious truth bombs about what's really keeping women from charging what they're worth.

We're getting into the mindset blocks, the feelings you're avoiding, and the identity shifts that need to happen before the strategy even matters. Plus Becky shares her framework for doing the inner work so you can finally charge high-ticket and mean it.

177 | I stopped podcasting. Here’s why and what’s next.24 Sep 202600:10:26

388,800 minutes. That's how long it had been since I last took to my microphone, and in this episode I'm telling you exactly what happened.

Back in December 2025, I was in a real funk. I'd just turned 50, I was eight years into my business, sales were down, AI copywriting was everywhere, and I was watching freelancers and coaches around me close up shop and go get "real jobs." I applied for a couple of copywriter positions myself. Instead of making a rash decision, I looked for the one thing I could pause without my whole business falling apart. It was this podcast. So I stopped. I didn't announce it. I just disappeared.

Here's what that nine-month pause made room for: a webinar I'd wanted to launch for three years, a paid ads funnel to cold audiences, tripled enrollment in Pivot to Premium, a dance class, and 10 hikes.

I'm also sharing why my original value proposition stopped being relevant, and what this show is about now that it's been renamed and rebranded: High Ticket Marketing and Sales Strategies for Gen X Women in Business.

If you're happy to hear my dulcet tones in your ear holes again, a rating and review makes a big difference to my reach.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the new direction for the ill communication podcast!

Self-proclaimed "world's biggest procrastinator" Kim Kiel gets real about how perfectionism and all-or-nothing thinking can paralyze your marketing.

She shares the exact mindset shifts and practical strategies that helped her build momentum and consistency, including how hosting monthly marketing moments boosts revenue, why accountability containers work, and how prompts and formulas can spark creativity instead of stifling it.

How women are building the new economy12 Nov 202500:09:05

If you're tired of hearing from the same gurus shouting each other out and talking about the same things over and over again, this episode is for you. Kim shares why she's excited about Regeneration 2025, a free virtual summit that's bringing together diverse voices who are reimagining business as a force for good.

You'll discover why the online coaching world often feels like a pyramid scheme (spoiler: it's not just you), and how events like this summit are creating something more regenerative, collaborative, and human. Kim talks about her experience with the Prosper Network and why this community feels so different from the typical online business echo chamber.

She introduces you to some of the incredible speakers you'll hear from, including Tina Wells (the millennial whisperer), Sam Horn (communication expert who's worked with NASA and National Geographic), and Amina AlTai (who teaches career, body, and mind balance after her own burnout journey).

This isn't about celebrity or sameness - it's about perspective, generosity, and expansion. If you're craving new ways of doing business that emphasize cooperation over competition and circulation over hoarding, you'll want to hear about this summit happening November 17-19.

Why I’m retiring my signature program (and what’s coming next)15 Oct 202500:14:24

After seven years in business and 165 episodes, I'm retiring my signature program, The Joy of Copy Club. This past year felt heavy. I lost my spark. I even applied for a job (spoiler: didn't get it). But the universe had other plans. New clients reached out. Podcast downloads doubled. My newsletter is growing like never before.

I realized something big: The Joy of Copy Club evolved into something far beyond copy. The real magic was watching women discover themselves, unearth their voice, and transform how they show up in business. It was never just about the copy. It was always about strategy, leadership, and selling with confidence.

In this episode, I'm announcing a new incubator and mentorship experience called Pivot to Premium. I built my business selling premium services to premium clients. I never had a $49 course or $97 membership. Instead, I made consistent, sustainable income through high-value, high-trust relationships with clients willing to pay for transformation.

The market is different now. Buyers are more discerning. They don't want low-ticket quick fixes or endless freebies. They're seeking mastery and results. When trust is low, people turn to their communities for reliable referrals. This is your opportunity to become the go-to choice.

I'm sharing what's inside Pivot to Premium and why now is the ideal time to elevate your offers, command the fees you deserve, and reclaim the spaciousness and ease you've been craving in your business.

How to attract and win premium clients02 Oct 202500:09:31

In this episode, Kim invites you to her brand-new live workshop, Master Your High-Ticket Message: How to Attract and Win Premium Clients.

If you've been struggling to raise your rates, exhausting yourself with lower-ticket offers, or wondering how to position yourself as THE go-to expert, this episode is your wake-up call.

Kim walks you through exactly what she'll in the workshop—from premium buyer psychology to crafting your own Premium Positioning Statement (aka your Big Frigging Deal statement).

Plus, Kim shares details about the personalized mini audit you'll get when you join (typically $150, but included FREE with your ticket).

Selling high-ticket isn't about charging more. It's about creating more space, sustainability, and profitability in your business so you can work with fewer, better-fit clients.

7 beliefs that block women entrepreneurs from premium clients25 Sep 202500:20:32

We’re not just in an economic recession — we’re also in a trust recession. Consumers and businesses are being more choosy than ever about where they spend their money.

  • Why “trust recession” is really a market correction
  • What research shows about premium buyers during recessions
  • The 5 keys to attracting and selling to high-ticket clients

Dean Jackson’s 9-word email: dos, don’ts and why it still works in 2025 {Summer Remix}30 Jul 202500:12:13

This summer, I’m bringing back some of my most-loved podcast episodes, and today’s is a gem.

You’ve likely heard of the 9-word email, a magical little formula created by marketing legend Dean Jackson. It’s short, punchy, and still incredibly effective for re-engaging leads and booking new clients in 2025.

But here’s the problem. Most people are using it wrong.

A recent newsletter from a well-known marketing expert reminded me how often the most important parts of this strategy get left out. So I’m diving back into this episode to give you the full picture. What to do, what to avoid, and how I’ve personally used this email to book $10K in client work.

You’ll learn:

  • What the 9-word email actually is (and why it works)
  • The right time and audience to send it to
  • Mistakes that make you look out of touch (and how to avoid them)
  • Real-life examples you can swipe and test today

Whether you’re reviving cold leads or teasing a new offer, this email strategy can be gold when used properly.

Running a business doesn’t have to be all 5am wake-ups, endless social media posts, and high-pressure launches.

Over the past 6 years, I’ve quietly built a chill, service-based business that has brought in over one million dollars in lifetime revenue.

{Summer Remix} Write your elevator pitch or power statement to cut through the noise and call in your ideal buyer09 Jul 202500:11:16

If you tuned in to last week's episode, you know we discussed the importance of being bold and clear in your messaging and marketing.

Right now, one of the biggest trends is having a clear point of view.

Nothing helps you stand out more in your marketing than knowing how to articulate what you do and whom you help in a clear and compelling way.

Some call this the elevator pitch, some call it a power statement, but I like to call it a BFD or Big Frigging Deal statement.

If you want to attract your ideal buyers in the remainder of the year, you need to be bold and compelling with your BFD statement.

Listen in for the full details on how to create yours.

The 3 marketing essentials your small business needs to boost sales this year25 Jun 202500:19:27

The marketing landscape has changed big time, and today’s buyers are more cautious, more skeptical, and taking way longer to say yes.

In this episode of Ill Communication, I’m breaking down the three essentials your business needs to sell with more clarity and ease in 2025, especially in what many experts are calling a “trust recession.”

We cover:

  • How to clarify your core message so your dream clients immediately know you’re talking to them
  • Why your brand voice and personality are more important than ever (and how to show up like you across every touchpoint)
  • What it really means to have a strategic sales plan so you’re not scrambling last minute or repeating the same rushed copy every launch

This episode is your permission slip to pause, recalibrate, and rework the way you market and sell with a strategy that’s thoughtful, flexible, and designed for real results.

Plus, I’ll introduce you to Copy Camp, my summer sales and messaging accelerator built for high-touch founders who want to finish the year strong without the hustle.

How to handle the emotional and mental health challenges of entrepreneurship with Rebecca Vigelius28 May 202500:29:36

This episode is different—and deeply personal. I'm stepping away from the usual copywriting tips to talk about something many of us avoid: mental health, burnout, and the hidden toll of holding it all together. The past year left me mentally and emotionally tapped out, and I didn’t even fully realize it until I was on the other side. So in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, I’m opening up about the behind-the-scenes struggles I’ve faced as a business owner—and the quiet moments of dissociation, disconnection, and doing the bare minimum just to keep going.

To help make sense of it all, I’m joined by Rebecca Vigelius, a neuro-somatic intelligence practitioner and stress coach who helps high-performing women feel human again without sacrificing their success. Rebecca shares practical, physiological tools to help you come back to yourself when life (or business) gets heavy—and why rest and nervous system regulation aren’t luxuries, they’re survival skills.

Topics Covered in This Episode:

  • The hidden behaviors that might be signs of burnout or dissociation
  • Why “just think positive” might actually be making things worse
  • A three-word tool to reconnect with yourself in under a minute

This episode is a love letter to every entrepreneur who’s ever kept smiling while quietly unraveling. You are not alone. Whether you’re in the thick of it or feeling strong right now, this episode offers a new lens—and a few powerful shifts—to help you navigate the harder seasons with more clarity and capacity.

Making tough decisions in business and life12 Mar 202500:10:07

Have you ever held onto something—whether in life or business—longer than you should, simply because you’d already invested so much into it? In this deeply personal episode, I open up about a bittersweet decision my husband and I recently made and dive into the emotional rollercoaster of letting go, the fear of feeling like a failure, and the powerful lesson in recognizing when it’s time to pivot.

Counterintuitive strategies to market and sell high-ticket offers to premium clients (part 2)19 Feb 202500:30:48

Why do some high-ticket offers sell effortlessly while others struggle to gain traction? The secret isn’t just in what you’re selling—it’s how you’re selling it.

In this episode, I’m covering what strategies actually work when marketing and selling premium offers in 2025. I’ll reveal where your high-ticket buyers are really hanging out (hint: it’s not where you think), how to craft messaging that positions you as the expert they need, and why less is often more when it comes to selling high-end services. Plus, I’ll share four of my favorite copywriting frameworks to help you write faster, sell more, and attract your dream clients with confidence.

If you feel like your premium offers aren’t getting the attention they deserve, this episode will change the way you approach your marketing and sales strategy.

What You’ll Learn:

  • The truth about where high-ticket buyers really hang out
  • Why trying to “hack the algorithm” won’t help you sell premium offers
  • The one thing high-ticket buyers always look for before making a purchase

You don’t have to write your high-ticket message by yourself. I'll guide you step-by-step through developing and perfecting your high-ticket message inside The Joy of Copy Club. Or, if you’d rather have someone handle all the research, strategy, and writing for you, I can take it off your plate. How to market and sell high-ticket offers (part 1)12 Feb 202500:20:48

Selling high-ticket offers ($5K+) isn’t just about slapping on a premium price tag—it’s about speaking directly to the right buyers in the right way. High-ticket clients think, research, and invest differently, which means your messaging must reflect that.

In this two-part series, I’m unpacking what makes a high-ticket offer irresistible and the strategic shifts that help you attract, convert, and serve premium clients with confidence. We’ll dive into what works, what doesn’t, and how to position yourself as the go-to expert in your industry.

Topics We Cover in This Episode:

  • The key differences between high-ticket and low-ticket messaging
  • What high-ticket buyers really look for before making an investment
  • The biggest mistakes that repel premium clients

There’s a lot to cover, so I’m breaking it into two episodes—tune in now for part one! And if you have questions about marketing and selling high-ticket offers, reach out to me on social media—I’d love to hear from you!
