"He took the first step on this perpetual journey as a kid obsessed with music back in Germany. During 2020, he introduced his sound with the single “Mountain,” eclipsing 10.9 million Spotify streams and paving the way for the Orion EP. The latter boasted another fan favorite “Morning Sun,” which gathered 6.2 million Spotify streams. 2023 saw him serve up his first full-length LP, The Seed. Along the way, he incited tastemaker applause from EUPHORIA., 1883 Magazine, OnesToWatch, and more."

"Around the same time, the onset of fatherhood turned his world upside down in the best way. It effectively divided the writing process of A Better Place into two halves—physically represented by his young family’s move from Hamburg to Denmark."

“There are all of these songs before the birth and all of these songs after the birth,” he affirms. “I was able to reflect on myself and what was happening. I said, ‘Goodbye’, to a lot of friends in Hamburg and started a new life in Denmark. All of these changes happened, and I was really trying to put them into songs, so I would have them with me forever.”

Through my personal music journey a band popped up early in my life that I fell in love with, that band was called SICKO. Ean was an integral part of Sicko and a huge part of my musical life. Now I have another band later in life to fall in love with, The Subjunctives. Along with Hernandez on guitar and vocals,  THE SUBJUNCTIVES include Wendell Howell on drums (also of Desolate Coast) and Jeff Mangalin (Four Lights) on bass.  The sum of their parts has created a pop punk masterpiece with their latest album "Let's Try This Again."  Ean and I talk about the formation of the band, his time away from music and what brought him back. For the past two decades, Go Betty Go have emphatically established themselves as one of punk rock’s most exciting forces. A gloriously rough-and-tumble sound with melodic aggression, they bring a rich and engaging energy, loaded with lush atmosphere and, at times, an underlying sense of foreboding.

Formed in 2000, in the suburbs of Glendale, California, they entered the LA scene when they were all teens. Go Betty Go is driven by Betty Cisneros’ big, roaring guitar, singer Nicolette Vilar’s soulful, siren call and the momentous urgency of Michelle Rangel’s bass and Aixa Vilar’s tumultuous drumming.

The Latina Punk Quartet swiftly ascended from local shows to a standing-room-only weeknight residency at Los Angeles dive Mr. T’s Bowl, to a national reputation via reams of critical acclaim and non-stop gigging.

Go Betty Go surged through several Warped tours, frequent cross-country tours, an attention-getting invasion of South by Southwest and seemingly had it made. With the release of 2005’s "Nothing is More", their first full-length album on Side One Dummy Records, they set out to tour yet again. They never finished it—Nicolette, exhausted, unhappy and burned out, suddenly quit. She walked away and the band's remaining members found themselves at a crossroads.

Miraculously and reunited, after a friend suggested a one-off 2012 gig, all four original members found themselves back together on stage. As if the band had a life of its own, Go Betty Go was back as suddenly as they had split years earlier.

After requests from fans and venues alike to play one last show together, the ladies of GBG gave in to what they thought was their final farewell show, but once they hit the stage, the chemistry that had once brought them together was restored and they were officially back. That renewal and excitement crackled through their last release “Reboot”, like a high-voltage jolt of electricity, reclaiming their rightful prominence as some of the brightest, boldest women in punk rock.

They continued to plow in full force, playing cross-country festivals and venues alike. But like the rest of the world, the band halted and canceled all touring in 2020 due to the pandemic. In 2022, Go Betty Go was hit yet again with their most difficult challenge to date. As the band prepared to enter the studio and record their next album, Betty was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. The news was hard, but it brought them closer than ever.

They worked around Betty’s grueling doctor visits, chemotherapy, and surgeries, and when she was having her better days, they managed to squeeze out their latest studio recording “Black and Blue”. The name refers to the difficult and bruised circumstances that the band has dealt with. With the help and support of GBG fans and the music community alike, they all have helped support Betty with her GoFundMe page and through messages of love and support. The band sees no other road, but the one to recovery, as Betty continues her treatment towards being cancer-free. They are optimistically hopeful, supporting Betty as she works on beating her cancer.

Go Betty Go’s upcoming album “Black and Blue” will be out in early 2024 via LA-based indie label Wiretap Records.

This week we welcome Jordan Sokel of PRESSING STRINGS. Pressings Strings lends credence to my feeling of never missing opening bands. I saw the band take an audience to a place they were not expecting to go, right to the merch table to purchase everything they could from the band.  Pressing Strings first formed in 2006 while Sokel was still in college. The band officially debuted in 2008 with their album, Where We Are, and now has a deep catalog that includes the albums Episodes (2010), Pressing Strings (2012), Life of a Tree (2013), Owe the Source (2015), and Settle In (2020) as well as two EPs, Most of Us (2016) and Morning Takes (2021). As Pressing Strings built up their impressive live show and paid their dues gigging, their fame was spreading throughout the entire Eastern Seaboard, leading to headlining venues across Maryland and Washington, DC and frequent festival appearances at Peach Music Festival, Firefly, Sweetwater 420 Fest, Floydfest, and more. Over the last decade, Pressing Strings has also toured and opened for the likes of The Beach Boys, Gov’t Mule, Toad the Wet Sprocket, JJ Grey & Mofro, Rachael Yamagata, Neal Francis, The Toadies, Jerry Douglas, Sam Roberts Band, Michael Glabicki (Rusted Root), Rayland Baxter, and Junior Marvin of the Wailers. In addition to their touring success and amassing over 6 million streams, radio has also taken notice, with national AAA and public broadcasters across the U.S. eagerly embracing Pressing Strings and taking them to the top of their charts.

St. Terrible is a musician, story-teller and artist based out of Boise, ID. HAUNTER is a new force in alt-pop, born from sleepless nights, a desire for growth, and the connective power of music. 

The band traces its roots back to late 2016 when Enoma Asowata (guitars/synths) met producer/songwriter Tyler Smyth while pursuing DIY projects. The duo clicked musically and after several months of talks, Enoma sent Tyler some rough demos of songs he had written, wanting to do something different, challenging, and brutally honest. Lucy LeNoir (vocals) and Mark Schroeder (guitar) joined the group shortly after and the trio began writing and demoing new material reminiscent of their old emo and metalhead groups…and just as quickly scrapped it. The false start didn’t hinder the band’s momentum and the addition of Mike Ray (guitar/keys) solidified the group’s musical dynamic. While writing and recording their debut single with Smyth at his LA studio, the band found their sound stemmed directly from their collective belief that music is akin to its ability to connect and heal people through shared experience – and from that, HAUNTER was born.

Garry Peterson is a Canadian and American drummer who over the course of a iconic career spanning more then six decades is best known for: being a founding member and co-owner of the legendary Canadian rock band The Guess Who; performing with former Guess Who member Burton Cummings; and performing with Bachman Turner Overdrive during their support of Van Halen’s 5150 Tour. For Garry, being a child prodigy meant success came at a very young age with his first professional gig by the age of four and by six he had already performed with Peggy Lee at the Chicago Theater in Chicago, IL. Similar gigs would following with the likes of Lionel Hampton, The Four Lands, and The Andrew Sisters to name a few.

By sixteen, Garry had joined the Winnipeg band Al & The Silvertones; which over the next couple of years would transform itself into The Guess Who. As a member of The Guess Who, Garry has to his credit: fifteen albums that have charted on Billboard 200; fourteen singles that have charted on Billboard’s Top 40, including two #1’s; and three Gold Singles and three Gold Albums as certified by RIAA. Through The Guess Who, Garry has also been inducted in The Canadian Music Hall of Fame and received the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement for contribution to popular music in Canada. Garry is also the only current or former member of The Guess Who that has performed on every single album and participated in every single tour over the course of the band’s lengthy history.

The Iron Roses are a passionate, unique, and beautiful group of people making music that we hope will change the world. Fueled by the injustices of our current times - their songs are the kind of protest anthems that only a group of seasoned musicians could make. Still angry, still driven, and still screaming – this is a band that will never give up the fight.

It takes serious talent to write and sing songs that sound angry while the music lifts your spirits. So much of political punk is abrasive and unpleasant. No hooks. No melodies. But other times the words sound incongruent with emotionless and insipid music. The Iron Roses manage something rare and commanding with music that lifts the heart coupled powerfully with lyrics that express fury and resentment of the current world. Punk as a genre has been so commodified and diluted over the last decades that it seems to be ever increasingly hard to find bands that resonate this way. That sing and play with such intensity that their authenticity cannot be questioned. That prove that true punk is alive and well and can have you dancing around your kitchen singing along at the top of your voice.

Yes, we can discuss their pedigree, most notably their frontperson Nathan Gray (of Boysetsfire), and their relentless touring and political activism. But none of those things matter if the songs don’t connect with the listener. And this collection of songs are going to do just that. From the opening notes of the first song the cards are on the table. The objective is clear – The Iron Roses are putting to words and music all the thoughts you’ve had these last few dark years. With the worldwide political climate leaning further and further from the left. With rights for many being limited and destroyed. With no end in sight. We need bands like The Iron Roses giving us a soundtrack to fight. Songs to pour our anger and frustration into when we sing along - just as they did when they wrote and recorded them.

The beauty of seeing these six individuals singing their truth is astounding. Watching them grow from strength to strength in the last few years it is unsurprising that this record is the outcome. They, and their songs, represent such power, love, and passion – something that we need more than ever in this world today.

If you've been wondering what it might sound like when two alt-banjo giants join hands & strings and sell their souls at the crossroads, Ponder Machine is an essential listening experience.

In August of 2022, Kramer parachuted into Asheville, North Carolina to record a mysterious LP of collaborative banjo studies by JD Pinkus & Tall Tall Trees. Pinkus is best known as the bassist who replaced Kramer following his exit from the Butthole Surfers (and his years with The Melvins), and Joyful Noise Recordings artist Tall Tall Trees (aka Mike Savino) is a stunningly talented multi-instrumentalist, known for his work with Kishi Bashi, along with his pioneering excursions into the world of his Banjotron 5000.

Within hours of Kramer's arrival, things got entirely out of hand (in exactly the manner he had hoped), and the results are sure to rewrite the way people see, hear and THINK about the banjo. Ponder Machine proves in a thousand ways that the possibilities are limitless, and the extra 30 minutes of music you get when you buy the Cassette version (or download the digital-only tracks) just hammers the point home. There is method to their madness. Listen closely and you will hear it.

Think John Cage meets Bela Fleck meets Brian Eno. The banjo has never been chewed up and spit out so lovingly. JD Pinkus brought his mushrooms and effects pedals. Mike Savino brought his sourdough and his psychedelic street-smarts. Sweet dreams, y'all.

SEMAPHORE understands what you’re going through, and they want you to know it. Comprised of singer and guitarist Siddhu Anandalingam, drummer Emmett Ceglia, guitarist Jay Kohler, and bassist Niko Hasapopoulos, the Brooklyn-based quartet has been busy over the past few years navigating the lonesome loudness of modern life. 

On the surface, Semaphore seems much like any other shoegaze band: they’re loud, atmospheric, and very, very moody. “We know we’re a bunch of sad boys singing for sad boys,” acknowledges Anandalingam, “but there’s a disaffectedness to a lot of shoegaze, an instinct to contribute to a collective droning, that Semaphore resists. We’re not trying to glorify numbness. We want to actually reach our audience.” This longing to connect underpins Semaphore’s work, lending an urgency to the band’s perspective, sound, and approach. 

Founded in 2013 by Anandalingam, Semaphore released its first album, All Too Robot, in 2016, establishing the band’s scene-bending fusion of shoegaze, post-hardcore, and impressionist classical music. “It’s somewhere between My Bloody Valentine, Glassjaw, and Debussy, with a top note of angry teenage boy.” Their latest release, 2023’s I Need a Reason to Stay, develops and complicates that premise: “so much of the music made for young people is very blunt and on-its-face. Our mission is to take the music that was foundational to us as both people and artists and evolve it into something sophisticated and inviting.” Semaphore’s unique sound luxuriates in the shifting tonalities, airy melodies, and lush orchestration of their greatest musical influences, incorporating songcraft and vocals in a decidedly un-shoegazey way. “It’s the music I would have wanted to listen to in high school.”

With their unique brand of infectiously catchy indie meets post-pop punk, LONE WOLF have been building a name for themselves and recruiting fans everywhere they go in Europe and further afield ever since forming back in 2016.

From the first notes of the album’s opening track there’s that instantly recognizable and unique sound that Lone Wolf have honed for themselves over the years. Since the release of their debut full length in 2015, ACTOR OBSERVER from Boston, MA have become a well-respected musical force throughout New England. Their dynamic sound and electric live performance are charged with a visceral sincerity and vulnerability that audience members find refreshing in the current age of post-hardcore. On 2022’s ‘Songs For The Newly Reclusive’ the quintet explored a broad range of emotional and musical depth, confronting topics of gentrification, toxic masculinity, generational trauma, and isolation amidst a clamoring world in distress. The resulting sound was their most focused and impactful album yet, garnering them a spot on the 2023 Boston Calling Music Festival (alongside legacy acts such as Foo Fighters, Paramore and Queens of the Stone Age) and a tour with metalcore heavyweights He Is Legend. After kicking off 2025 opening for The Used at House of Blues in Boston, AO signed with Dynamic Talent International for booking. Since then they have toured all over the eastern half of the US, northeast Canada with Kaonashi, and released two new singles, with a third on the way.

A punk rock unit from Santa Barbara, California featuring members of Lagwagon and Good Riddance, Versus the World issued their eponymous debut album in 2005 on Kung Fu Records.

Drawing from their dense pedigree the band blends elements of pop-punk, melodic post-hardcore and troubadour-style vocals by founding frontman Donald Spence. Versus the World has toured extensively worldwide on subsequent releases Drink.Sing.Live.Love (2012) and Homesick/Roadsick (2015) in support of bands such as No Use for a Name, The Ataris, Lagwagon and MxPx.

In 2021 the band teamed up with producer Cameron Webb (Motörhead, Megadeth) to make "The Bastards Live Forever" which is out now on SBÄM Records.

The band says, “‘The Bastards Live Forever’ was written during the height of the pandemic in 2020. It’s a disparate collection of songs about divorce, shame, love and growth.

From the suburbs of East Los Angeles, CA, four Mexican American kids came together in 2001 to form the band Audio Karate. Audio Karate developed a unique sound that drew from their many influences such as Descendents and Jawbreaker. Their unique mix of melodic and emotional punk rock helped them develop a big fan base and quickly caught the attention of Kung Fu records, who signed them in 2001 alongside bands like Blink-182 and Tsunami Bomb. Audio Karate were far from being just another “punk” band, and their blend of melodies and hooks set them apart, making it difficult to place them in any one genre. The band has mastered the art of writing infectiously catchy songs with deeply personal lyrics, while still remaining upbeat and fun.

One of Taking Meds’ greatest strengths is musical friction—Their ability to insulate instantly hummable hooks with their signature brand of disjunct, off-kilter energy and atmosphere. Tired Radio is the brainchild of Brooklyn-based musician Anthony Truzzolino. 

Started as a solo project in 2017, Truzzolino released two independent singles before taking a hiatus to pursue other interests. During that break, Truzzolino continued to write songs that would eventually lead him to revisit the project in 2019 with the addition of drummer Kevin Daly. 

Truzzolino’s endearing rasp, catchy hooks, and anthemic choruses combined with Daly’s driving rhythms and distinctive fills led the band to Gradwell House Recording in New Jersey to start work on a full-length debut.

Formed in 2018, ‘glock-rock’ stalwarts Lakes have turned plenty of heads since emerging from the depths of Watford’s DIY. 

The band are settling into 2023 with their sights set on a metamorphosis, driven by a desire to forge themselves into something bigger and brighter than ever before. Step forth new album Elysian Skies. Recorded with Tom Peters at Trapdoor Studios in Liverpool, Lakes took to the studio to make their sound enormous, leaning into their penchant for positivity, charm and twinkling catharsis all while wrapping their themes in echoing guitar effects and soaring vocal harmonies. 

Where their last album Start Again saw Lakes take their darkest moments and come out of the other side, Elysian Skies is an evolution of that woe and emerging into a realm that is full of colour, brightness and hope. It’s the band forging their own path and signalling a new phase in 2023, not quite the re-birth of their previous record, but a phase that contains the very essence of what the band have grown into — and what they do best.

On this week’s episode we travel around the world to meet up with multitalented Australian artist HAYDEN CALNIN. From early beginnings Hayden has carved out a path refusing to adhere to convention and genre. By the time the self-taught, multi-instrumentalist had graduated from film school, a major in sound design had set the scene for Hayden to take an interest in music production. On his first two self-produced EPs, Hayden explored the realms of everything from folk through to downbeat, drawing comparisons to artists such as M83, Bon Iver, James Blake and Dawn Golden. Hayden not only creates music for himself he helps others realize their own visions by producing and writing with other artists as well as composing film scores for local Australian filmmakers. Hayden has also had syncs in popular television shows like Suits, The Good Doctor, The Vampire Diaries, Teen Wolf, The 100, and So You Think You Can Dance USA as well as the UK trailer for Academy® Award-nominated favorite Room.

BLAKE MORGAN is an American musician, singer, music producer, record label owner, and activist based in New York City. After releasing the alternative rock solo album Anger's Candy (1997) on Phil Ramone's N2K Sony/Red label,he began producing music independently and founded the label Engine Company Records in 2002, which in 2012 became ECR Music Group.

Morgan was born and raised in Manhattan. He began playing the piano and going to music school at age five, with the aim of becoming a professional pianist. At age six his interest began to switch from classical composers to The Beatles, after his mother introduced him to Meet The Beatles. In first grade he began attending the United Nations International School in New York City. He stayed there for 12 years, and graduated with an International Baccalaureate. He concurrently continued his piano studies at Greenwich House Music School in Manhattan. Morgan's first gig was at CBGB's in New York, when older students from his school recruited him to play keyboards in their band. Since he was legally too young for the venue, they used his then short stature to smuggle him inside the club in a bass drum case. As the show began, Morgan came out of the case to jump on stage and play the synths. Morgan's political activism on behalf of artists began in May 2013, when a pointed email exchange between him and the founder of Pandora, Tim Westergren, regarding lowered royalties, was published in the Huffington Post. The article was met with much enthusiasm in the artist community, and Pandora lost $130 million in the stock market the following morning.

Names Without Numbers is a four-piece rock and roll band from Omaha, NE. The

band was originally formed by a group of longtime friends and musicians trying to

transition away from their pop-punk roots to a grittier, emotional style of rock.

Previous releases by the band have seen a growth from experimental emo and

punk to a more polished pop-rock sound. The band has played and/or toured

throughout the midwest with the likes of Jimmy Eat World, Dashboard

Confessional, Hot Rod Circuit, Copeland, Plain White T’s, and dozens of other acts.

Stylistically, Names Without Numbers plays a blend of guitar-driven, indie-power-

Today I had the distinct pleasure to speak with an artist I have admired and adored throughout his illustrious career, JEFF CAUDILL. Jeff has been a part of some of my favorite projects through the years, GAMEFACE, MARCH, YOUR FAVORITE TRAIN WRECK and now he is back with his new band LOW COAST. Jeff was very open and honest about his life in the music business and what led him to what he described as “the band he was looking for.” Jeff went on to tell the story of a father meeting another cool father and talking about their love of music and BOOM, LOW COAST came into our lives. The Last Second Save was created by songwriter Jesse Procaccini to channel his creative vision and inner-most thoughts. Jesse brings us into his world of creation and collaboration throughout his career.  The 2-song single "Baltimore," produced by Will Beasley and Paul Leavitt (All Time Low, The Dangerous Summer), has elevated his music and opened the door to a new era in his expression. In the single “Baltimore,” Jesse teams up with fellow Maryland songwriter Ben DeHan to pen verses worthy of that city’s literary history. This song illuminates the possible by imagining what’s right around the corner and a new future that starts with a first step.

On this week’s episode we meet up with the Brooklyn based band WAKELEE. Wakelee consists of identical twins Alex (vocals/guitar) and David Bulmer (drums) and Elliot Shiang (vocals/bass). They met at a friend's show in New York and immediately bonded over Halal food and music. They have since released an EP, a healthy batch of emo-tinged singles, and recently released their self-titled debut album, produced by Brian DiMeglio (Bartees Strange, Superbloom, Grandad) in April 2023. Join Alex, David, Elliot and I as we throw on some “Mood Rings” while we go on a “Nighttime Car Ride” to the life “Arcade.”
