Turning Things Around: How to Handle Upset Donors24 Feb 202300:07:40

At some point in your fundraising career, you are going to have an upset donor who is angry with the organization, leadership, or the direction that the organization is going. It’s not a pleasant experience, but with some grace and skills, you will make it though it. You will experience upset donors. It’s part of having a relationship – there are ups and downs. If a prospect is really upset and threatening to pull their giving or something drastic, engage your manager. It might take more than just you to smooth things over. That’s okay, just remember, they are upset because they care. If they didn’t care about your organization, they wouldn’t get upset. It’s hard to remember that when you’re being yelled at or lectured, but try to center yourself in the comfort that they care.

  • If they didn’t care about your organization, they wouldn’t get upset. It’s hard to remember that when you’re being yelled at or lectured, but try to center yourself in the comfort that they care.
  • When donors or prospects have strong feelings, listen, and try not to get defensive.
  • Sometimes people just need to be heard and acknowledged.

5 KPIs for Major Gift Officers10 Feb 202300:18:40

KPIs are the measurements of success for your major gift officers. That's why choosing the right KPIs is critical. Peter Drucker wisely said, "what gets measured, matters." And he's right! Whatever metrics you put into place for your major gift officers will become their focus. If you are measuring the wrong things, your major gift officers will begin focusing on the wrong activities. Make sure your KPIs are donor-facing, include solicitations, and that most of the portfolio is being cultivated. They should be easy to measure and not tie your major gift officers to their desks. Major gift officers should spend minimal time on data entry but just enough to measure the KPIs.

Learn:

  • What are KPIs
  • Why are KPIs for your Major Gift Officers important
  • How to track KPIs in your database
  • The best 5 KPIs for your Major Gift Officers
  • How often you should review your KPIs

Transform Your Board Into Storytelling Fundraisers02 Aug 202400:43:30

In this episode, Mary dives into transforming board members into effective storytelling fundraisers. She highlights the significance of board members feeling comfortable and skilled in connecting with donors through the organization's stories. Mary categorizes board members into four types: connectors, storytellers, visionaries, and closers. Raise your hand if you’ve ever walked out of a donor meeting thinking, “Oh my gosh, I totally messed that up.” 🙋‍♀️ We've all been there! Asking for a major gift can feel stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. In this episode, I break down the five biggest solicitation mistakes I see fundraisers make every single day—and how to avoid them.

Whether you’re struggling with when to ask, what to say, or how to handle donor objections, this episode is packed with real-life strategies to help you make stronger asks and close bigger gifts.

In This Episode, You’ll Learn:
✅ Why asking too soon can cost you the gift (and how to fix it)
✅ How to make your donor meetings feel like a conversation—not a monologue
✅ The #1 mistake that leads to vague, unconvincing asks (and how to make yours clear & compelling)
✅ What to say when a donor hesitates or pushes back
✅ Why following up is a must—even if the answer is “I need to think about it”

Mistakes Covered in This Episode:
🚨 Mistake #1: Asking Too Soon – Why 90% cultivation, 10% ask is the magic ratio
🚨 Mistake #2: Talking Too Much – How to get the donor to do most of the talking (and why silence after the ask is golden)
🚨 Mistake #3: Not Being Clear About the Ask – How to structure your ask so the donor knows exactly what you’re requesting
🚨 Mistake #4: Not Handling Objections Well – Why objections are NOT rejections (and how to turn a no into a maybe, and a maybe into a yes)
🚨 Mistake #5: Failing to Follow Up – The easiest way to leave money on the table

How to Close Your First $100,000 Gift21 Feb 202500:32:36

Fundraiser, this is a BIG one! 🎉 Closing your first six-figure gift is a milestone moment in your career—and today, I’m walking you through exactly how to make it happen.

Whether you’re brand new to major gifts or just haven’t hit that $100K mark yet, this episode will give you the step-by-step framework to find the right donor, cultivate the relationship, make a powerful ask, and steward the gift for future giving.

And hey—if you’ve already closed a six-figure gift, stick around! You’ll relive the glory of your first “YES” and pick up tips to help you land your next one even faster. 🚀

In This Episode, You’ll Learn:

✅ How to find the right donor—no more chasing whales!
✅ Why high affinity + high capacity = your ideal six-figure prospect
✅ The #1 mistake that keeps fundraisers from making big asks
✅ How to cultivate with purpose (so you’re always moving toward the ask)
✅ The permission-based fundraising strategy that guarantees you’re asking at the right time
✅ What to do after the donor says YES to keep them engaged for future gifts

Key Takeaways:

🛠 Step 1: Find the Right Prospect

  • No more guessing! You need both high affinity & high capacity
  • Look at past giving trends—who is already engaged and increasing their gifts?

⏳ Step 2: Make Time to Fundraise

  • Major gifts don’t happen by accident! Protect your time & focus on deep relationships
  • What you focus on = what gets results

📣 Step 3: Have a Strong Case for Support

  • What are your fundable impact areas? Don’t just build new programs—fund what’s already making a difference
  • Create clear, compelling cases for why this gift matters

💡 Step 4: Cultivate with Purpose

  • Every interaction should move the donor closer to the ask
  • Use personalized, high-touch engagement (events, site tours, board meetings, peer-to-peer connections)

🤝 Step 5: Get Permission to Ask

  • Before you end any donor meeting, secure the next step
  • Example: “Next time we meet, I’d love to talk to you about a significant financial commitment. Would that be okay?”

💰 Step 6: Make the Ask

  • Be specific: “Would you consider a leadership gift of $100,000 to make X program possible?”
  • Then, STOP TALKING. Let the donor think & respond—don’t rush to fill the silence!

🎉 Step 7: Steward the Gift Like a Pro

  • Call the donor the next day to celebrate their commitment
  • Keep them updated as their gift makes an impact (this sets up their next big gift!)

Permission-Based Fundraising: The Secret to Better Donor Relationships and Bigger Gifts05 Jun 202500:22:39

Hey fundraiser! In this episode, I’m sharing a major mindset (and strategy) shift that changed everything for me in major gifts: Permission-Based Fundraising.

Years ago, I blew a solicitation—not because I asked for the wrong amount, but because I asked without permission. That moment reshaped how I approach every donor conversation, and today, I’m walking you through exactly how you can use this strategy to:

  • Build deeper trust with your donors
  • Create donor-led momentum through every stage of Moves Management
  • Eliminate awkward asks and surprise solicitations
  • Get more joyful, generous YESes (and fewer no-shows, ghostings, or "let me think about it"s)

This episode is packed with permission-based scripts, psychology-backed strategies, and real examples you can use right away. If you’ve ever felt unsure about when to ask or struggled to move relationships forward—this one’s for you.

💡 What You’ll Learn:

  • What permission-based fundraising is—and why it’s more powerful than pitch-based approaches
  • The difference between “making the ask” and inviting a gift
  • My favorite permission-based phrases you can use in donor meetings right now
  • Why asking permission actually speeds up your major gift results
  • How to keep the ball in your court while honoring the donor's autonomy
  • The #1 question to ask before you ever solicit a gift

🔗 Resources & Links:

10 Permission-Based Ask Examples for Fundraisers:

  • “Would it be okay if I shared an idea that I think really aligns with your passion for [X]?”
  • “When the timing feels right for you, I’d love to explore ways you could make a meaningful impact.”
  • “Can I show you what your support could unlock — just to get your thoughts?”
  • “Would you be open to hearing a vision we’re excited about — no pressure, just a conversation?”
  • “If you're curious, I could walk you through a few giving opportunities that match what you've told me matters to you.”
  • “Would it feel good to explore how you might be part of this — or would you rather stay in learning mode a bit longer?”
  • “Can I keep you in the loop as we move this forward, in case the timing feels right down the road?”
  • “Would you be willing to help us shape what this looks like? Your input would mean a lot.”
  • “I’ve got something I think you’d enjoy seeing — would it be okay if I sent it your way?”
  • “Are you open to a conversation about what meaningful support could look like, even if it’s not now?”

3 Mindsets Holding You Back in Your Major Gift Work (and What to Do About Them)28 May 202500:19:18

Description:

Ever feel like you're stuck in your major gift work — second-guessing your proposals, over-preparing for donor meetings, or trying to sound more “professional” than you feel?

You’re not alone — and you’re not broken. You’re just operating with some mindsets that a lot of fundraisers are carrying around.

In this episode, Mary unpacks the three most common mindset traps holding fundraisers back from raising transformational gifts — and gives you the tools to flip each one into confidence, connection, and action.

🎯 Mindset #1: “I Have to Be Perfect to Be Taken Seriously”

  • Why donors don’t want a polished pitch — they want you.
  • How to shift from performance to presence.
  • The #1 reframe that turns pressure into connection.

🚀 Mindset #2: “I’ll Send the Proposal Once It’s Perfect”

  • How perfectionism delays gifts (and drains your energy).
  • Why done is better than perfect — especially in proposals.
  • A new way to think about proposals that frees you up to just send it.

💥 Mindset #3: “I Need to Be Someone Else to Connect with Donors”

  • Why being your real, sometimes awkward self is your secret weapon.
  • How “sticky trust” gets built in donor conversations.
  • A story about how humor (yep, even that) can unlock major gifts.

🎉 Wrap-Up:
Pick ONE mindset to shift today. Then check out Major Donor Meeting Mastery — Mary’s game-changing training for fundraisers who are ready to land the meeting, build trust, and close big gifts (without feeling fake or salesy).

How to Break Through Donor Silence (Without Feeling Desperate)26 Sep 202500:15:59

Ready to pour rocket fuel on your major gift efforts? Major Gift Momentum is the solution. Check it out here!

Welcome back, fundraiser! In this episode, we're tackling one of the most head-scratching (and heart-sinking) experiences in major gift fundraising: donor silence.

Ever had a warm, engaged prospect suddenly vanish into the abyss of unread emails and unreturned voicemails? You're not alone—and you're definitely not doing anything wrong.

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • Why donors really go silent (hint: it’s usually not personal)
  • What not to say when following up (no guilt trips allowed)
  •  What to say instead—4 proven re-engagement templates
  • How to restart the conversation with confidence (even after 6 months)
  • When to “bless and release” a prospect and protect your energy

Plus, I’m sharing my 3-touch outreach method and what to do when a donor ghosts you again after reconnecting.

🎯 Key Takeaway: Donor silence isn’t a door closing—it’s a pause. And you get to decide when (and how) to press play again.

Stop Low-balling Your Donors: How to Confidently Ask for the Right Amount04 Oct 202500:18:59

Ready to pour rocket fuel on your major gift efforts? Major Gift Momentum is the solution. Check it out here!

Today we’re tackling one of the most common (and costly) mistakes I see major gift officers make: lowballing the ask.

If you’ve ever walked out of a donor meeting wondering if you should’ve asked for more—or felt afraid to offend a donor by going too big—this episode is your wake-up call. Because here’s the truth: donors aren’t offended by bold asks… they’re confused by vague ones.

We’ll unpack why fundraisers undershoot, how to calculate the right amount with confidence, and how to deliver your ask in a way that feels natural, strategic, and unapologetically bold.

In This Episode, You’ll Learn:

  • Why “playing it safe” with smaller asks is actually hurting your organization (and your donors).
  • The four biggest reasons fundraisers lowball their asks — and how to fix them.
  • The real cost of under-soliciting (hint: it’s not just lost revenue).
  • The confidence formula for determining the right ask amount using capacity, affinity, and readiness.
  • How to deliver your ask with precision — using specific numbers, clear impact, and confident tone.
  • What to say (and what not to say) when presenting different giving options.
  • The four-question Confidence Checklist to know you’re ready to make the right ask.

What to Do When a Major Donor Gives Before You Ask11 Oct 202500:16:24

Ready to pour rocket fuel on your major gift efforts? Major Gift Momentum is the solution. Check it out here!

In this episode of Hey Fundraiser!, Mary Petersen dives into a surprisingly common (and often confusing) fundraising moment — when a donor sends in an unsolicited major gift that’s much smaller than what you were preparing to ask for. Should you celebrate it, be worried, or assume your cultivation failed? Mary breaks down exactly what to do next, why it happens, and how to respond strategically so you don’t lose momentum or confidence.

This episode will help you turn that “surprise gift” moment into an opportunity to requalify, re-engage, and deepen the relationship — instead of second-guessing your process.

You’ll Learn:

  • 💡 Why unsolicited gifts happen — from “testing the waters” to avoiding a pitch.
  • 🧭 The 4-step framework for responding to unexpected major gifts.
  • 🗣️ How to thank donors thoughtfully and signal a bigger vision.
  • 🤝 What to say (and not say) when you follow up.
  • 🧩 When to “bless and release” vs. when to double down on cultivation.

Key Takeaways:

  1. You didn’t blow it — unsolicited gifts are often a door opener, not a door closer.
  2. Respond fast — thank within 24–48 hours and make it personal.
  3. Signal there’s more — let donors know you have a bigger vision to share.
  4. Re-engage with curiosity — ask discovery questions to uncover motivation.
  5. Don’t chase endlessly — use Mary’s “three tries in three ways” rule before blessing and releasing.

The 5 Habits and Mindsets of High-Performing Major Gift Officers18 Oct 202500:16:47

In this episode, Mary Petersen pulls back the curtain on the habits, mindsets, and metrics that consistently drive 5-, 6-, and 7-figure gifts. Whether you’re new to major gifts or ready to elevate your game, this episode breaks down what the best MGOs do differently — and how you can model their success starting today.

You’ll learn:
✨ The five daily habits every top MGO swears by
📆 Why time-blocking and prioritizing the right donors changes everything
📊 The key metrics high performers track (and which ones to ditch)
🧠 How to shift your mindset from “petitioner” to “partner”
🔥 Why energy management is a fundraising superpower

By the end, you’ll know exactly what to focus on, how to measure the right work, and how to reframe your day-to-day to bring in bigger gifts — without burning out.

🧩 Key Takeaways:

  1. Time-block donor work — Protect 90–120 minutes every day for strategy, outreach, and follow-up.
  2. Prioritize by relationship stage, not recency. Responding to the latest email isn’t the same as advancing a relationship.
  3. Know your top 25 cold. Keep them visible — whiteboard, sticky note, or list.
  4. Track actions, not just dollars. Celebrate meaningful moves that build momentum.
  5. Always plan the next step. Never leave a meeting without a clear follow-up.

💡 Bonus Metrics:

  • 15–20 meaningful donor interactions per month
  • 12–16 major gift asks per year
  • 80% portfolio coverage every 6 months
  • Track average gift size per officer

And remember — top MGOs think like partners, not petitioners. They don’t take “no” personally, and they know that rest and reflection fuel long-term success.

Mastering the Major Gift Ask: 5 Solicitation Scripts To Set You Up for Success27 Oct 202500:29:41

In this episode, Mary Petersen tackles one of the most-asked questions in fundraising: “What exact words do I use to close a major gift?” Mary breaks down the anatomy of an effective ask—clarity, confidence, and connection—and shares five solicitation styles with real-world language, when to use each, and why they work. You’ll learn how to time the ask using permission-based fundraising, avoid common pitfalls (like being vague or asking too soon), and tailor your approach to each donor’s style so you walk into every meeting poised, prepared, and confident.

Key Takeaways

  • Tailor your ask to the donor’s style, motivations, and relationship stage.
  • Lead with confidence—never apologize for your ask.
  • Don’t ask too soon; use permission-based fundraising to confirm readiness.
  • Always include a specific dollar amount and what it funds.
  • Acknowledge past giving to build momentum for the next gift.
  • Silence after the ask is strategic—let it do the heavy lifting.
  • Different donors respond to different ask styles—match the method to the person.
  • Personalize by naming the program/outcome your donor cares about.
  • The “What would it take?” ask unlocks collaboration and negotiation with strategic donors.

Chapters

  • 00:00 — Transforming Panic into Poise
  • 02:49 — The Art of the Ask
  • 06:12 — Common Mistakes in Fundraising
  • 09:05 — Five Powerful Solicitation Styles
  • 26:29 — Tailoring Your Approach for Success

The Five Solicitation Styles (with sample language)

  1. Direct Ask — best for decisive, well-briefed donors
“Sarah, we’re looking for partners to fund the new Food Pharmacy. Would you consider a gift of $100,000?”
    • Why it works: clear, concise, confident.
  2. Gratitude Ask — ideal for loyal donors stepping up
“Lisa, your generosity has changed lives. We’d love to invite you to deepen your impact with a $500,000 gift for the new animal shelter.”
    • Why it works: honors history, creates momentum.
  3. Partnership Ask — perfect for lead/anchor gifts & insiders
“Tom, you’re a champion of our mission. Would you consider investing $1 million to help us scale our food bank?”
    • Why it works: elevates the donor as a co-creator.
  4. Storytelling Ask — for heart-driven, first-time major donors
“Mark, let me tell you about Maria… With $75,000, we can help 10 more families like hers in the next six months.”
    • Why it works: connects dollars to human outcomes.
  5. “What Would It Take?” Ask — for negotiators & strategic thinkers
“Tim, what would it take for you to consider a $1 million investment in our domestic violence hotline?”
    • Why it works: opens collaboration and deal-shaping.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Asking too soon—skip the pitch until you’ve secured permission for an ask.
  • Being vague—never ask for a “major gift” without a specific amount and purpose.
  • Apologizing or filling silence—state the ask, pause, and let the donor process.
  • One-size-fits-all scripting—match your ask style to the donor.

The Momentum Method: How to Run Major Gifts Like a System (Not a Mood)07 Jan 202600:21:48

If your major gifts work is running on vibes—if you only do outreach when you feel confident, or you avoid the ask until you feel “100% ready”—this episode is your intervention (said with love).

In this conversation, Mary breaks down the Momentum Method, a simple system that helps you build steady progress in major gifts without relying on motivation, a perfect week, or a magical burst of confidence. You’ll learn the 4 core elements that create momentum—and a weekly rhythm to keep them moving.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • What “mood-based major gifts” looks like (and why it’s so common)
  • The 4 elements of the Momentum Method:
    • Portfolio
    • Major Gift Materials (Outcomes + Offers)
    • Cultivation
    • Solicitation
  • A simple weekly operating rhythm to build real major gift momentum
  • The biggest reasons you feel stuck—and how to fix them with structure, not willpower
  • How to stop “prepping” forever and start moving donors forward with confidence

Your simple challenge for this week:

Pick 5 donors you’re moving this week.
Write one clear next step for each.
Schedule two outreach blocks on your calendar.
That’s it. That’s the system.
