| Astravoid Returns! | 27 Dec 2025 | 01:37:10 | |
Years since her first appearance, Astravoid returns to the Sanctuary—and this episode becomes a full-circle moment. We revisit her very first appearance back in 2019, when she joined the show as a beginner finding her footing, and trace the evolution that followed: learning the craft, building confidence, stepping into judging roles, becoming a contracted guest, and now launching a new chapter as a streamer. This isn’t just a catch-up episode—it’s a real-time case study in growth. We talk through how her mindset has changed, what she learned along the way, the challenges she didn’t expect, and how showing up consistently reshaped her place in the cosplay world. It’s an honest look at what long-term commitment actually looks like behind the highlight reels. “Astravoid Returns!” is about progress, not perfection. It’s proof that starting small doesn’t limit where you can go—and that evolution in cosplay happens over years, not posts. If you’ve ever wondered what staying in the game can lead to, this episode shows exactly what’s possible. Find the Sanctuary on Social: Follow Her On Instagram Subscribe to her YouTube Channel
| Letting Go of Thoughts on Cosplay is Not Consent | 26 Dec 2025 | 00:13:10 | |
“Cosplay Is Not Consent” is one of the most important statements in the community—but it’s also one that’s often repeated without deeper reflection. In this episode, we step back and look at how the message has evolved, where it succeeds, and where conversations around it sometimes break down. We talk about boundaries, respect, accountability, and how intent, communication, and context all matter. We also explore how slogans can lose clarity when they become reactive instead of educational—and why meaningful change requires more than repetition. This episode isn’t about diminishing the message; it’s about strengthening it by encouraging better understanding and healthier dialogue. By letting go of oversimplified thinking, we open the door to more nuanced conversations that actually protect people, reduce harm, and build trust at conventions and online. If you care about safety, respect, and the long-term health of the cosplay community, this episode invites thoughtful reflection rather than noise. | Cosplay Millionaire | 02 Dec 2025 | 00:13:18
This episode digs into the mindset, discipline, and strategy behind turning your creative passion into something sustainable—and why most people misunderstand what it actually means to “make it” in the cosplay scene. We break down the myths of overnight success, viral fame, and sponsorship riches, and replace them with the real pathways that creators use to build income, influence, and long-term opportunities. Instead of chasing clout, “Cosplay Millionaire” focuses on building value: your skills, your network, your consistency, and your brand. We talk about the difference between pretending to be successful online and actually building the habits that create stability off-camera. By the end, you’ll understand why the richest creators aren’t always the loudest—they’re the most intentional. This is less about money and more about power: claiming control over your craft, directing your energy, and treating your cosplay like the creative enterprise it is. If you’ve ever wondered what separates the hobbyist from the empire-builder, this episode gives you the blueprint. | Con Hopping is a Bad Idea | 18 Apr 2023 | 00:07:43
How many Conventions is too many? I’ve been to two and that’s been about as expensive of a vacation as any I’ve ever taken. I’m beginning to wonder if it’s worth it to attend several every year after my 2022 experiences and I certainly do not know how anyone goes to Con after Con – some 20 or more. In many cases, they’re not headlining or at a booth. They’re just going to see celebrities and wear their cosplays. This is great for the Cosplays, because they get to be circulated, but it is it good for you? Find the Sanctuary on Social: Follow Her On Instagram Subscribe to her YouTube Channel
| Barriers to Entry Are Too High in Cosplay | 16 Apr 2023 | 00:11:35 | |
There are some really high barriers to Cosplay. It’s expensive, it’s time-consuming, and it’s hard to break into it right now. There’s a feeling that you have to be a personality on the internet and circulating online in order to dress up and connect with your favorite characters. Have the barriers gotten too high, and is it hurting the community? Find the Sanctuary on Social: Follow Her On Instagram Subscribe to her YouTube Channel
| Why Obscure Cosplays Don't Work on Social | 14 Apr 2023 | 00:06:43 | |
We love obscure cosplays, but we know that social media does not. If you’re not a major player in the community, and even if you are, the likelihood of choosing something that isn’t mainstream is slim to none. In the podcast today, I want to talk about why you don’t, but also why you should look at what you consider an obscure cosplay as your next passion project. | Thank You Very Mutchie! | 17 Mar 2023 | 00:47:32
We're very excited to have FanX Cosplay Hall of Famer Shandra Mutchie with us on the show. We're talking about her many accomplishments in Cosplay, her origins, the many competitions, charities, and events that she's organized and been a part of, and we're very happy to again talk about the phenomenal group that she has co-founded to enact characters from A Court of Thorns and Roses. We talk about her processes in Cosplay and go deep into her part in A Court of Salt and Snow. Find the Sanctuary on Social: Follow Her On Instagram Subscribe to her YouTube Channel
| Why Cosplay Content? | 08 Mar 2023 | 00:08:27 | |
I got into the Cosplay world in 2019 and was almost immediately scammed. After that, it got better, but I finally found a space that I like to be in and it’s helped me grow a lot in skills and even made my regular career grow. In this episode, I want to tell you why I choose the content I choose to share, what my method is, and the format for the programs and eventual products that I will offer. | Gatekeeping 2.0 | 03 Mar 2023 | 00:08:49
We’ve talked about gatekeeping more than once. It’s a real thing in a lot of spaces. Creating content online in general does not have many barriers, but you’d be surprised (or maybe you wouldn’t be) at how much permission you have to ask in the Cosplay community to do things. There’s a lot of going behind backs, there’s a lot of “cliques” and there are groups and factions that actively prevent online creators from trying to get into the same space. | Did Marvel Ruin Cosplay? | 01 Mar 2023 | 00:08:11

| Good Content vs Constant Content | 26 Feb 2023 | 00:14:26 | |
There’s a big difference between creating quality content for the masses, and quality Cosplays than there is just making as much as you possibly can just to try to stay in the “game” of cosplay. Good is really defined by you, but if the only reason you’re making cosplay after cosplay is to keep it constant for the gods of social media, you might be in it for the wrong reasons. | Can I Cosplay Something from a Book? | 19 Feb 2023 | 00:06:31
Have you thought about using a character from a book for your next Cosplay? Some of my recent guests have done amazing work with Cosplays adapted from Novels. It's not for the beginner, but if you're looking for something to challenge your Cosplay creating skills and really appreciate the fandoms in a different mainstream media with books from any genre or era, this might be a new set of creations for you. | Not a Costume Designer? Start Here with Cosplay | 15 Feb 2023 | 00:07:35
What skills do you need to Cosplay? None, you build them as you go. Today I want to talk to you about why this is a good space to learn if your lifelong dream wasn’t to be a designer or videographer. You may not have the skills in these areas but that doesn’t mean you can’t share what you’re building in Cosplay with an online community. | The Brightest Side of Cosplay | 01 Dec 2025 | 00:10:34
In this uplifting episode, we step away from the noise and focus entirely on what makes cosplay worth doing in the first place. From the creativity and craftsmanship to the friendships, growth, and pure joy of stepping into a character you love—this is the side of cosplay that gets overshadowed but never truly disappears. We highlight the makers who create for the love of it, the communities that build each other up, the small moments at conventions that stay with you, and the breakthroughs that happen when you stop chasing approval and start creating with intention. This is an honest reminder that even in a scene filled with pressure and competition, there’s still light—real connections, shared passion, and the spark that keeps artists coming back year after year. If you need a reset, a reminder, or just a reason to smile again about this hobby, this episode brings you back to center. With the inflation and economic issues that have come up in the last year, have we given up on Cosplay? I see more and more cosplayers selling their cosplays, reducing content, and moving away from the cosplay scene. Even I’m scaling way back this year, not attending any cons and re-thinking my long term plans in light of the recent downturns looming over our heads. | Level Up Your Hobby | 23 Aug 2022 | 00:07:07
If you fish, eventually you go to contests if you’re looking for a way to get competitive with fishing, but still happen to have a job as an executive. I rarely hear about executives joining up with the PGA, but I do hear about how they get better at fishing. So…fishing analogy. In reality, if you like what you do, then getting better at it shouldn’t be too much of an ask, but how do you measure getting better at something that’s “for everyone”? Kind of like Netflix or Pokemon. So level it up – that doesn’t mean you have to have X followers, or make a business. You can simply improve and dedicate more effort to making a larger splash – for yourself, not really your audience. Not doing things for your audience can backfire – if you’re picking projects no one else is interested in (pop cosplay), then there may not be a huge return. However if you’re getting good at all the components that go into playing around with costumes, then potentially your audience will appreciate your work more and more. And it’s all about attention and acknowledgement…right? And possibly brand deals. Find the Sanctuary on Social: Follow Her On Instagram Subscribe to her YouTube Channel

| Dark Deals, Smoked Mirrors, & Sunshine | 30 Nov 2025 | 00:13:01 | |
In this behind-the-scenes breakdown, we peel back the layers of the cosplay world that most people never talk about. From the quiet back-room deals and unspoken political games to the curated illusions that dominate social media, this episode exposes the difference between what the community projects and what actually happens off-camera. We talk about the “dark deals”—the subtle manipulations, favoritism, and transactional relationships that shape competitions, collaborations, and clout. Then we dive into the “smoked mirrors”—the filters, staging, and polished personas that create unrealistic standards and pressure for creators at every level. Finally, we look at the “sunshine”—the real joy and passion that still exist when you strip away the noise and return to why we started cosplaying in the first place. This episode is equal parts reality check and encouragement, reminding creators that authenticity still matters, the game isn’t as clean as it looks, and you can choose to build something real without selling your soul to the algorithm. If you want the truth about the culture behind the costumes, this one hits home. Find the Sanctuary on Social: Follow Her On Instagram Subscribe to her YouTube Channel
| Minimizing Your Time on Any Platform | 21 Aug 2022 | 00:08:14 | |
We’re just on the phone too much. Do you remember when this was an issue because we ultimately ran up our phone bills on long distance calls? Does anyone remember long distance calls? Once upon a time, there was very little chance of connecting with people from everywhere. You were more or less stuck in whatever town you were growing up in. No Facebook, no Instagram, no world wide web, and computers were good for things like Number Munchers and Oregon Trail. But there was not much to get us addicted to the flexibility of an all-in-one device that does nearly everything from starting our car to turning on our lights to watching our home, streaming from our basements, buying stocks…it’s the coolest thing ever – and we use it to primarily scroll through endless amounts of entertainment. | Do Cosplayers Have Clients? | 20 Aug 2022 | 00:07:33
If you accept money from someone, is that someone your client? Are they a patron? Supporter? Good Samaritan? Creeper? Sponsor? How do you define support and how is it different than providing a good or service – which is the standard way of conducting business. In the cosplay world, when cosplayers create businesses, do they really want clients? If you’re selling a product of any kind, you probably do – I’m surprised I have not seen cosplayers yet with NFT offers in the mix, especially with the mix and Art and Conventions. | Can We Really Maintain 1000s of Online Relationships? | 19 Aug 2022 | 00:11:27
The time we spend with people online, isn’t really spending time with them – it’s more the time we spend dwelling on their content. This actually sounds a lot like the kinds of unhealthy relationships that we tend to find in high school or middle school when you ‘crush’ on someone. You don’t know them, talk to them, or really interact with them at any level, but you think you know them, and you WANT them to like you. So why do we try to do it? Because we’re told by the online gurus that if we want to gain attention – which apparently is the most important thing in web 2.0 and on earth right now…or at least that’s the thought process – if we want the attention, we need to interact. | Are You Building an Image with Cosplay? | 15 Aug 2022 | 00:12:39
Why are you building an image and are you? You’re in Cosplay – there are rules – unwritten or otherwise on conduct, on what you shouldn’t cosplay, on collabs, on shoutouts – there are many rules. We’ve stayed in the center and been as neutral as possible on many occasions – there are things that we stand for – but what I see often is Cosplayers standing for things just to trend – they don’t actually care at all – there’s just people online who jump on a bandwagon because it will positively affect their image. | No Secret Sauce in Cosplay | 13 Aug 2022 | 00:09:44
There’s no sauce. Everyone is looking for this secret kernel of information related to making money online or success or popularity, but the reality is – there’s no sauce And that’s not because I haven’t looked or I’m taking an easy way out or that it just isn’t working for me – there really is no fast / standard way to do anything that just gets you rich quick that people are hiding from you. In fact – being rich and popular are 2 of the most boring things on earth, and honestly – once most people get into it – they look at how things were and really don’t want it. You want what you think money and fame bring – not what they actually do bring. It kills your time, your energy, and you stop having any control over what you do – it’s being controlled by trends, or by where you need to go in order to keep making money or stay relevant. | Doing Only What's Popular | 12 Aug 2022 | 00:08:26
If you only do what’s popular – wait…isn’t everything with Cosplay more or less something that was or is popular? Aren’t all the characters and costumes well known to some extent? What I mean is – and what I kind of talked about yesterday, is that you don’t need to limit yourself to doing only what’s trending in entertainment to be relevant in what you create. Possibly the cosplay doesn’t resonate with you, but it’s whatever’s on streaming so you do it – and that leads to…what exactly? You being upset about not getting enough action on your posts? Popularity doesn’t have much to do with the platform you’re on – things trend and randoms look for certain things depending on what media is telling them to search for. | Lie, Cheat, Steal, Manipulate | 24 Oct 2025 | 00:12:22
In this raw and uncompromising episode, Scotty B addresses the darker behaviors that sometimes lurk beneath the surface of cosplay and creative circles—lying, cheating, stealing, and manipulation. From clout-chasing to backstabbing collaborations, he unpacks how these patterns emerge when ego and insecurity take the wheel. Scotty explores the psychological roots of why people deceive or exploit others in creative spaces and how the culture of competition and validation quietly rewards bad behavior. He contrasts this with what real integrity looks like in an industry built on image and perception. This episode challenges listeners to rise above toxic tactics, to lead with honesty and respect, and to remember that character—not popularity—is what truly defines a creator. | Pop Cosplay | 11 Aug 2022 | 00:09:31
Pop Cosplay is a term that I use to describe a growing population of Cosplayers that only cosplay whatever’s coming out next in movies, or on streaming. It’s whatever’s popular that week, or day, or month – they ride trends. Do you as a Cosplayer need to get into Pop Cosplay? Are you feeling pressure to create new cosplays at a breakneck pace and only those that are popular based on the release dates of movies and series? This is probably not a great place to start and an even worse place for you to compare yourself to others. I blame TicTok and Instagram for Pop Cosplay as it stands today. How do you navigate asking someone in the Cosplay space to do something with you? Asking for things in Cosplay isn’t as daunting as it sounds. | YouTube is the Way - But It's a lot of Work | 09 Aug 2022 | 00:10:11
We link YouTube here at Heroes, but wow is it a lot of work for nothing. Will YouTube make you rich? Not likely – unless you were already. Or were a celebrity, journalist, or had a notable career prior learning something connected to media or entertainment – that sells on YouTube. There’s also the crazy stuff – which gets a lot of views and often does not require much production. You just do crazy stuff for 10 – 30 seconds and people watch it. Short attention span theater. But YouTube can work – tutorials, how to, DIY – Cosplay…this is a space for Cosplay and collectibles – vlog format or otherwise. It’s why I interview people – I enjoy it and I like to promote what other people are doing on my show. Is it going to break out and be a major channel? Probably not. Could it be? We’ll see. Changes ahead. Find the Sanctuary on Social: Follow Her On Instagram Subscribe to her YouTube Channel
| Who Promotes You and Who Do You Promote? | 08 Aug 2022 | 00:10:07 | |
This is going to be a strange episode. It’s not really about shout outs and being shouted, it’s not about making side deals and having people talk you up for money or something else that you’re trading. It’s about how people feel about you and how you feel about them in the online space. I say online, because it’s very different in real life – if you meet someone at a Con, you may or may not even recognize them – you might even thing their really closed off compared to the person you know from the online space. You’re probably expecting something else. The answer here is you. You promote you. You need to rely on yourself, your ability, and not look or ask for others to share you out and spend their time and resources making you great. What about them? Are you only sharing someone so they will share you? What is that? Find the Sanctuary on Social: Follow Her On Instagram Subscribe to her YouTube Channel
| The Bad Math of Selling Yourself for a Cosplay Hobby | 07 Aug 2022 | 00:10:53 | |
Linktrees are more and more often including a link to space that isn’t really Cosplay related – it is however money related – and what you’re selling, well…it’s probably the oldest profession out there. Is this what you wanted? You built a following to coerce people into buying YOU? Your time, your opinions, your…”art” so to speak? We’re not here to bash, but you could have easily done all of that without Cosplay. Does it give Cosplay a bad name? It can – but ASMR is banned in certain countries and it’s not inherently evil or seductive. It is what it is – and many call themselves ASMR Artists. I follow a few too, and I can honestly say I don’t know why people think it’s evil. Find the Sanctuary on Social: Follow Her On Instagram Subscribe to her YouTube Channel

| Fandom of Fandoms: Being a Fan of Cosplayers | 04 Aug 2022 | 00:09:01 | |
Another issue with Cosplay – we begin to obsess not just over the actors and characters, but over the people portraying them – we spend more time congratulating and paying compliments to total strangers – for YEARS – on the internet, than we do our own friends and loved ones. We spend more time trying to gain access to a total stranger, whom we know almost nothing about (because let’s face it…IG and TikTok tell us nothing about people besides they have quite a bit of free time or extra energy) than we do focusing on what we need to do to make ourselves successful and help others around us Would you pay to see (or maybe you do) a self-created non-celebrity because you follow them and that somehow makes them famous? Social media is very dangerous from this standpoint – it’s hard to tell who is out there actually in Entertainment, and who is stealing reach from entertainers to make themselves look like they’re entertainers, but they do not have the background. | Drawing the Line in Cosplay | 03 Aug 2022 | 00:12:06
There’s a line we need to discuss in Cosplay – and it’s when we begin to harm ourselves in order to remain relevant in the Cosplay space – financial, physical, social hurt. It can burn us out. It can make us broke. It can become an obsession, and we can dwell on what the trolls are telling us about ourselves that isn’t true. Draw a line. Do not kill your relationships for Cosplay. Do not alienate people and destroy lives in the name of Cosplay. Don’t be that Karen that has to circulate rumors and talk about people behind their back in the DMs and advocate positivity on the surface and then break people down behind the scenes. Pieces will go for hundreds if not thousands of dollars – THOUSANDS of dollars on a costume you wear in your home for Instagram, and take to places that have you spend EVEN MORE money in order to show off the cosplay. From emotional burnout to exploitative collaborations, he explores how individuals, events, and even communities often benefit from a cosplayer’s time, image, and energy without giving much in return. Scotty reflects on how ambition and visibility can be used against creators, turning passion into a transaction. He breaks down the quiet ways the system drains artists under the banner of “opportunity,” and how to recognize when growth isn’t actually mutual. This episode urges listeners to reclaim their boundaries, value their work, and understand that real growth doesn’t require self-sacrifice—it requires self-respect. Lifelong creator and Cosplayer, putting the Play in Cosplay, in this episode we're talking to the talented creator of the Cosparlor, a fun and helpful space for Cosplayers to visit, share, and learn inside of the Community.
