Claremont seems the reasonable space to start, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Hickman’s X-men ended up being the model for Snyder. It’s more recent and the tree of plots probably fit better for a younger audience that’s now…well not as young – it’s been over a decade since Avengers.

What is the X-Men Inferno Saga About?

In this episode, we're talking about the X-Men Inferno Saga and how we've worked to adapt a version of Chris Claremont's work into a Cosplay tribute trailer video.
In short, it’s not going to be cannon. But it will tell the story and we want to be true to the story itself.
Characters – We omitted quite a few – because there are so many in Inferno. It’s a crossover event, so there are X-men, X-Factor, New Mutants, and the X-terminators, which…I’m ok leaving out. I also will talk through some of the highlights of the saga in coming episodes, but I left the characters in the hands of the cosplayers creating them – we’ve got voice overs and it’s what we thought would be true to the project, not necessarily what the writers had in mind – this is all not for profit – we just wanted to do it – I get nothing for it – they get nothing for it – and it’s all copywrite material – we’re showcasing it to applaud the work, not copy it and say it’s an original work – it’s not – the cosplays are creations, but the story and everything about it is not – it’s inspired work.

When it Seems Like a Cosplayer is Everywhere

I’ve run into this before a few times. Maybe more than a few. Certain Cosplayers seem to drop enormous amounts of content on many platforms, be at premieres, on lives, and seemingly never busy…they’re everywhere and nowhere at the same time. Weird.
I can attest – creating content takes up a lot of free time. Maybe photosets do not if you’re set up at home – then it’s really just motivation.
But I don’t understand how you can be on lives in the middle of the week, and on Twitch, and rolling out content on 10 platforms if you’re working full-time.
So when a Cosplayer is literally everywhere – collabing with everyone – showing up at Cons with everyone – premieres, responding to every DM – you begin to wonder…are they doing this on their own?

Convention Roomates

I don’t really have roommates at Cons, and I’ll tell you why in this episode.
Roommates can help with expenses, help if makeup, costumes, and make your time at the con go really fast, but when you get to a certain age, you may be less inclined to A – stay at a Con that long and B – room with anyone because you’ve gotten set in your ways.
If you’re used to having a roommate, like you did in college – you might not be as bothered. College – at least for the first two years – wasn’t a place where I got much sleep. My roommate liked to be up until 3am, which only gave me 3 hours of sleep, while he slept until noon. That’s great, but there was no respect for my space at all and I was after-all paying for half the ridiculous room rate at college.
It does reduce cost, but it can also lead to drama, so make sure you know well the people that you’re staying with. If you’ve only met them online, that could be an issue. Especially with the 20 somethings. Make sure you have payments arranged and divided and that there’s open communication about who’s sleeping where, who’s paying what and when and many other details that need to be sorted.

Selling at a Con

I’ve noticed, going through Artists alley that there’s a lot of pressure to sell at a Con – actually the whole Con floor. Some are more into it than others – and maybe not the comic book booths – they seem more interested in showcasing than selling. BUT – there’s pressure to sell and it’s an art in and of itself.
So – what are you selling, why, and who are you selling to? Are you giving away a lot, are you available and are you just the right balance between friend and pushy sales person?

I'm Not a Cosplay Look-Alike...Now What?

What do we do when we don’t look like anyone? And by anyone, I mean no one currently playing a super hero part in a series or movie.
It’s become such a thing that we’re beginning to alter our appearances – photoshop or otherwise – in order to promote a ‘look-alike’ platform and gain attention. Gain the attention of the actor, or the Industry and get things for doing that.
But I’m not, nor will I ever be a look-alike. If I look like a video game character, it’s interpretive. If I try out a character from a book, it’s interpretive. If I go with any character – I’m never going to look like any male actor out there in the slightest. You might be in that same boat.
What do we do? What do I do? I talk about people who are look-alikes, and really the community at large and how it reacts to look-alikes.

Circulate or Fade Out

We circulate, or we fade away. The real issue for me with social media. Yes – media is constant. Pushing a new season or series of a show is just as much content as the show itself – sometimes more. How many previews and commercials do you see everywhere for Disney shows like Hawkeye and Loki? They have their run and then the communications giant moves on to the next thing.
Are we at all surprised that there isn’t a Disney social platform? I am. Will there be a version of Meta that Disney will put out? And will it win with Cosplayers because it will have everything by then – Marvel, Star Wars, and possibly even DC?
So you have to circulate – which means continuing to pursue a hobby and share it in the hopes that your accounts continue to attract more followers for the work that you do with your Cosplay. The events, the photos, videos, lives, streaming – it’s a full time job you don’t get paid for.

Cosplayers Shift to Video

Will cosplayers be able to keep up with platform shifts to short video clips?
Because it wants to be more like YouTube and TikTok and soon you’ll be seeing recommended videos in your feed in addition to ads every 4 posts.
Organic on social is nearly dead. Posts are very difficult to see, and even difficult to see when you pay.
Now you have to create videos and be very clever with how to distribute and market them to reach a new potential audience.
What do you do?
Are there newer platforms coming out that are less crappy in terms of the investment to the user? Content creating isn’t what it once was – we’re going to see the rise of the videographer which means anyone in the photography space is going to have to pivot if they’re mainstay is content creators on one of these platforms.
Are we closing in on Virtual everything with Meta – which is the larger overarch to Instagram – will everything be Meta in a few years and, if so – what happens to cosplay creators?

Avoid the Main Cosplay Traps

There are a few Cosplay traps that we haven't talked about yet - more to do with cosplayers supporting cosplayers or those outside of the community who think they're doing the right thing by over-extending themselves to buy other people Cosplays.
Do not become a “Fan” and carry a torch – have friends, collabs, but do not de-value yourself into having someone be above you because they can model, or act, or are designers. There are many skills – you need to put yourself first in your own life and believe you have value – being a fan and interacting as a fan will devalue you.

Competing in Media

Can I tell you how to compete in media when I do not myself compete?
I can tell you that the game changes a lot, and that online interests, algorithms or just regular people are fickle minded. You can do the exact same thing as someone else and get nothing from it. Often, the easiest result to see if no responses or low responses which can be due to a lot of reasons
What does it mean to compete in a space where there aren’t really any rules? This is where it gets philosophical and when I start to talk about the Infinite Game tactics that I tend to keep
Playing Finite will burn you out and ultimately you will not feel fulfilled in the long-term (maybe you will – but most do not feel too good or that they’ve accomplished much unless they’re making millions)
Money is always the benchmark and it should not be – your skills, what you’re doing to become an authority in your space – that matters – it works towards something, and possibly something that you never achieve – but it’s less fleeting than money.
Make a million dollars and what happens? Did you win at Cosplay? Media? Is there a leaderboard?

Do I Have to Sell as a Cosplayer?

Is it important that Cosplay is a hustle that I receive things to do?
Yes, it’s expensive and often people in this space will say that contributing to them keeps things going
But it’s not your audience’s responsibility to pay for your hobbies and interests nor in gaining attention should you become the interest that they subscribe to – a fan club (buy things and obsess over me)
You’re not a celebrity – most of you are not anyway – I don’t know many celebrities that cosplay. There are well-known names in the community, but the guests at a con come in 2 distinct categories
So, the short answer is NO, you don’t have to sell as a cosplayer.
And what do we have to talk about after that? What’s the point of sharing if you’re not selling? Gaining attention? Isn’t that still selling?

What Do Cosplayers Sell?

It’s a lot of the ‘so what’ and ‘why’ that you need to answer and then also figure out who it is that you want to join your journey – because having Patrons is great, but what’s in it for them? Eventually you fade away from your account and can’t engage because the audience gets too big – it just exists like it does for many celebrities.
The trap that I see the most is that it becomes a form of modeling – unregulated modeling that borrows intellectual property from a lot of different spaces and shows it off. Sometimes everything is purchased, sometimes everything is made, but what’s actually being sold is your ability to model and be an online personality of a kind.
Know yourself – know your audience – and have a goal for what you want to create for them (not for you)

Attention or Marketing?

Is gaining attention marketing? Are you, in trying to create viral content actually marketing?
Sometimes.
The intentions drive the answer – what does that mean?
Marketing yourself, your brand, products/services means that the attention is a means to an end – you want people to pay attention because you believe that what you’re telling them leads to them wanting something you have to offer them – goods and services
You produce something other than content.
Very important to understand – marketing for the sake of creating an audience to leverage for things you want or to get in front of things you want to notice you isn’t really marketing.
It can be if you’re goal is to create strategic partnerships, but what I see mostly is “hey look at me” and every post needs to have x number of clicks and interactions for the sake of the click or interaction, but there’s noting being pointed to – there’s no sell, really – just “look what I did”

But theater does play into Cosplay – it’s where many of us go after being theater geeks in high school and college and where we meet people with similar interests – or at least…try to meet people with similar interests – we can at least follow people with similar interests, like their photos, and wish we were as good – oh…wait that’s exactly what we’re not supposed to do.
Anyway – theatrics have always been something I’ve enjoyed. I like having an audience, and putting on a show. Having done a dozen or so performances over time – it’s demanding, but I always felt comfortable on stage – it was an ultimate escape, even if it was lonely and isolating, and there were always a litany of catty / salty people who wanted your role and thought you were terrible in it. That aside – I liked doing it.

Being a beginner at a hobby can be a terrible experience – in fact, I’ve never successfully stuck with a hobby for more than a couple of years because I generally run out of money and patience.
There’s a ton of gatekeeping in Cosplay and I’ve yet to go to a panel where I actually learn how to make something from what’s being explained at the panel. It takes DOING
And unfortunately, there aren’t too many classes for crafting and making costumes – because…you’d need to bring a lot of things to that in order to start-to-finish create something
There are so many different little things you need in order to create anything in Cosplay – also no wonder people just buy finished products. It’s not cheaper…but it can be for a beginner.

Learning How to Paint Cosplays

Why is painting hard? It’s not art – it’s more like paint by number because you already have the piece – you just need to make sure that it works and looks ok and is consistent and the colors are right.
Once you paint something, it’s kind of hard to go back and do it. You can’t really un-paint it. You can paint over it, but if it’s foam, this may not work well – you create layers and it can get too thick…there’s a lot of room for error in painting
Again – be prepared to mess up – if you’re painting anything, have several of the same thing to paint so you can practice – or just practice painting foam. It’s all about figuring out what works and what does not.
There are any number of spaces that will tell you how to prime foam or other materials, what kinds of paint to use, and methods for weathering
What they won’t tell you is how – how exactly to you find a brush and paint something – how much paint to use on the surface – how to mix paint so that it doesn’t get uneven or if you mix it – that you have enough and can consistently re-create the color.
Let's get into all the basics and where I am with painting my Cosplays, because I know I have a long way to to go, but it's fun learning and moving through all the beginner pieces of creating cosplays.

Learning to Use Foam for Cosplay

Foaming is also hard to do. It requires a lot of planning on how small pieces are going to fit together.
Being an engineer helps as you have the ability to see how things fit together – should you be creating your own patterns.
Following patterns and cutting foam is easier compared to sewing. It’s a matter of sizing correctly and then finding an adhesive that keeps everything together.
Let's get into the basics of foam building, and all the parts that I currently struggle with, and those things that I find are better outsources to the experts.

Diminishing the community, your value, and only seeing others for what they make and how many followers they have reduces you. I suck at sewing. I just started, so I thought I would have an episode where I talk about why so many people buy Cosplays instead of building them.
Sewing takes a lot of time – setting up the machine, threading it, picking fabrics, pinning patterns, finding anything that works, and then…sewing a straight line – which I so far haven’t been able to do.
Go too slow – it doesn’t come out right. Too fast – it also doesn’t come out right
It’s a ton of maintenance and hard to see what you’re doing...

Cons are a bunch of work for Cosplayers. Makeup alone can take hours – and you have to put it on every day you’re at Con. You have to have extra luggage, lug a bunch of costumes and props around, find a place for things, arrange shoots, and it’s more like a long work day than anything else.

I don’t have tips on how for it not to be work for a Cosplayer to go to a Con and circulate – mainly that’s what you’re doing at Con now – it’s not about friends or enjoying fandom – it’s about getting in front of other people’s phones – photo ops, networking, keeping up appearances…

The movie industry boosts actors and actresses to promote their product – it’s all about selling and making the people in the movie interesting – the more you want to be them, the more interested you are, the more you’re going to want to see what they do.
We all start somewhere, and though it’s possible to be “discovered” on social media, it does not make you a movie star.

The Attention We Get with Cosplay

If you haven’t noticed yet – Cosplayers seek a lot of attention for what they do. And it’s getting really competitive.
If you’re not a model or a designer, or you don’t have a workshop – the online space is getting very closed off.
But when you have people in a different space – the video clip sharing space say that the other content doesn’t matter OR even better – when they say it’s too hard or doesn’t have any return.
Is it just about gaining more attention, like so many in the online space say? You can make it about your target market – your IDEAL client, IDEAL person that you want to inspire, entertain, or influence to buy your product or service – not HBOs, not Netflix, not a shirt for the latest movie – but you gaining momentum for yourself and what you are building.

Why we Cosplay and not just Cosplay, but why do we have to share it at all?
We’re not just dressing up as the characters anymore – we’re imitating the look of the actors wearing the costumes and it’s getting to the “who are you wearing” phase where costume designers are finding accounts and sending suits out in order to get noticed.
It’s all about attention, but are there other reasons deeper or broader than that for the Cosplayer today?
Unfortunately – with social media the ‘fame flash’ is always a part of that. Climb a mountain, take a selfie. Run a race, take a selfie. Eat dinner…take a selfie.
Today we're talking about the other reasons why we Cosplay and also that it's ok to share, but maybe not healthy to always (or only) think about the metrics of posting our Cosplays online.

Cosplay Anxiety...Again.

I’ve never felt that I’m good enough for Cosplay. And it creates a lot of anxiety.
People can be downright awful. It’s not even about the Cosplay 99% of the time. Cosplayers are very forgiving about your Cosplay, but not really about you.
For some reason, Cosplayers believe that they have a level of celebrity status – at least some do, and they’re protective of who they come in contact with everywhere as a result. They like the attention, but if I’m being honest, the most unapproachable people at Cons – Cosplayers…not that I’m really approaching anyone at a Con.
Let's talk about those feelings we internalize when we compare our content and Cosplay-ability to everyone else and what works best to get out of that mindset.

This is one area that we don’t always think we’re failing at, but I’ve seen a variety of organization in Cosplay from throwing everything together at the last minute to planning things out meticulously.

How Cosplay Traps You

The fame monster is real and cosplayers chase it. Eventually it traps you and you're just as stuck in your online world and it's customer service as you were when you were answering the phones at work and getting yelled at by customers. You begin to feel trapped.
Staying relevant, getting validated, feeling the good and bad of it – dopamine either way and that rush is what got you into your scroll hole, your outreach loop, your constantly being attached to your phone.
We crave attention, we want to be social, we want companionship – but Cosplay isn’t that. Cosplay is expression, not a means for which to gain attention.

If you are promoting posts, you are not paying for followers. If that’s true, than every company on earth is cheating when it comes to you buying their stuff. Everyone with a business has spent money marketing their brand, product and services.
Purchasing followers is exactly that – you go to a site that “sells” followers and you pay money for them to add to your following. It’s really bad for your accounts, by the way.
And it is marketing, not just bribing people to follow you – that isn’t recommended and it’s borderline crazy. You’ve no contract to enforce trying to literally buy followers.

Here to talk about his new book, Cosplay : A History – The Builders, Fans and Makers Who Bring Your Favorite Stories to Life, is author Andrew Liptak. Andrew has an amazing book out in stores now and we're here to talk all about his writings, how he came to create this fantastic book, and his observations on Cosplay as a long time member of the 501st Legion.
You may have seen him at conventions like DragonCon, and his extensive works extend beyond Cosplay, having his work published in Armchair General Magazine, Clarkesworld Magazine, Gizmodo, Slate, The Verge and others. His short fiction has appeared in Galaxy’s Edge Magazine and Curious Fictions.
We cover many topics, including several of those included in his book. Reenactments, masquerades, the evolution of cosplay, the current state of cosplay, and the importance that it has right now (and has historically), and it's impact on our cultures.

We're here friends! The final and 100th Podcast episode of Season 3 : United. And the 250th Podcast! I'm very happy to say that we'll be back for Season 4 next year, and there's a lot to to between now and then. Many updates, large projects, and so much going on.
Also - I wanted to take this episode to talk about the wear and tear that Cons have on us. A few tips for you on how to navigate the highs and lows of going to Con and then coming back to "reality" - at least for those of us who are not full-time convention creators in Cosplay, Art, or Entertainment.
Thanks for everything this season - I never expected it to go on this long or get to this point, but here we are. From here, I really want to continue to add a lot of value. It's about time that I talked about Cosplays at C2E2 this year. Today I'm talking to you about what I observed in the Cosplay space, at the competition and in general with Cosplays this year.
There was a lot going on, and congratulations to all of the competitors, it was fantastic and wow - really wonderful work everyone!

This week, we're re-capping a little bit on C2E2, which happened just this weekend. Sad that it's over, but it was such a great time. This week, I'm going to give you a bit of an overview, and talk about the event and those pieces that I was able to get to this weekend. There's always too much, even for 3 days, but I'll do my best to tell you what went on.
If you're thinking about going to a Con, this is one that I can recommend. Looking forward to next August and being there in full Cosplay (should everything stay open - let's hope so!)

Friends, we made it! We've reached the end of the Season on YouTube and we'll have one more week of re-cap episodes here on the Podcast to talk about C2E2 and what's going on there this weekend.
They say that you make 100 crappy YouTube videos before you start to get the hang of it. Though my guests have been the greatest and I appreciate them all, one thing that I know is that I have come a long way over the last 3 seasons as a host.
We're wrapping up the season today and talking about how we got where we are now, the origins of HoCS, and where we'll be going next season.
It'll be a little while before Season 4 content comes out, so stay tuned, but we'll have more for you in 2022 as we work on bringing more value, more quality, and more of what you need in this safe space for Cosplayers.

Authentically Fake

Avoid the authentically fake influencer, cosplayer, or person. Also, don't become this person. Selling and promoting the "fake" life on Instagram just leads to so many issues with yourself, with your following, and eventually - unless you have a PR department - it comes back to find you. You can't sustain a "fake" persona unless it's all you do and that is your life. Being a persona or a public figure who shares nothing of themselves online might be what you want to be or do, and that's your choice - but know the truth of it. Know the dangers of warping what authentic really is, and yes - you'll gain and gain and grow, but will you ever achieve the fulfilment you were looking for when you do go down this road?

Circulating at a Convention

Promotion at a Con can be tough. There are seas of people, and a lot of options. Whether you have a booth, or it’s just you going – if you want to get noticed and network here are a couple of tips from a Marketing perspective.
Promote as early as possible – many Cosplayers put ‘next Con’ info in their bios, but few have too many pre-posts about going to a Con. It’s just the weekend of and you see a story with them in a car or arriving, etc. Get the word out – if you have a website and you circulate – keep that schedule on your website.
Networking can be easy – be approachable and approach others – conversation should be easy in Cosplay – or at least it gets easier. Compliments and photo requests – nothing too pushy, nothing too lengthy – you might see people you recognize – make a point to say hello. Ask people for their handles and follow them.
Wear your brand shamelessly, even if you don’t have a booth. Not that you need to be a walking billboard, but if you have something you’re proud of, wear it – people will see it.
